This is the best hotel I've stayed at. My fiancee and I got engaged while staying here and all of the staff remembered us and said congrats as we were around the hotel. All of the staff is super friendly and we couldn't have asked for a better stay.

Nice hotel close to the Smithsonian museum campus. We had one night where house keeping did not refresh our towels and just took the ones we left on the floor and put it back. I noticed this because we had a towel that was a bit stained with blood. They offer complementary toiletries if you forget something and their restaurant has disposable utensils if you have leftovers. Their coffee maker is clean and does not Brew tainted water from old coffee like other hotels which is nice cause I drink tea.
Amazing hotel. Has the museum feel from the exterior and the interior design is very nice. Offered free wine from 6 to 7 and staff was very friendly. Literally in the center of DC I don't think as far as location it can't get any better. A++
Comfortable, clean hotel in a great location. The room (king size) was spacious and well maintained. We did hear a bit of noise from the street, but it wasn't a big deal. The free wine bar was a nice treat. The staff was courteous. And we were close to the Mall, Capitol, and other attractions.

Beautiful hotel in perfect location. The restaurant is excellent. That said, the bathroom in my room had obviously not been cleaned properly before my arrival. I m hoping this was a one off as I ve stayed at most of the D.C. area Kimptons and never had something like this occur before. That said, this may very well be my favorite hotel now that the Monaco Alexandria has been rebranded.
We were looking to spend our anniversary there with our child and were really interested in watching a DVD of our special day. However, things did not go according to plan.
1) When I arrived, I was told that they upgraded my room for me (because of the anniversary). Unfortunately, this was not true. I was given the same room I had booked.
2) I called multiple times to request a DVD player. After waiting 30 minutes I asked if I still had to wait or if it was ok to go and get dinner while someone delivered it to the room. They apologized and said they would put it in the bed. To this day, I'm still waiting for the DVD player. It never came. And it was the number one thing we wanted to do during this anniversary stay.
3) After filling out a breakfast room service request and leaving it outside, it was picked up and we thought it would be delivered with no problems. However, we were called in the morning and asked what we wanted as if we had written nothing on the card. They asked us about EVERY single item we put on there. It made not sense. Second, they delivered the food late, 20 minutes late after the appointed delivery time. Third, they delivered the wrong food and messed up the order. Fourth, they blamed us as if we had ordered incorrectly or left a blank card--both not true. Finally, we asked to speak to a manager. And this person removed the charge for the breakfast. Unfortunately, this was the only compensation for all the problems.
4) We asked for a late checkout through a 1-hour extension (checking out at 1 PM instead of 12 PM). Housekeeping tried to clean our room TWICE before the normal checkout time (12 PM). There is a lack of communication in this hotel.
5) The hotel deactivated my card before checkout time.
6) Maintenance came to our door and asked if we had a small tv. I said the tv is large. He asked if there was a small tv in the bedroom. I said yes. He peered in. Then he realized that either the tv was not small or that there was nothing wrong. He apologized and left.
It was a really bad experience and we were not compensated in any way besides the breakfast.
On a mini vacation booked room for 2 nights, leaving the next morning not staying for the second night. Place is amazing with history hated that the upgrades wasn't taken more serious. Painting on top of painting on top of painting kinda killed the beautiful look of this place tile worke was shabby shame they didn't take time to bring it back to life.. Service was 10 star's for sure and I would definitely come back just for the absolute awesome service.. But the reason I left was when on vacation you do Alot of walking sight seeing and the bed should the best!!!! It was NOT. it was a king size spring mattress that was worn out!!! So disappointed if only the mattress was comfortable I would have stayed. Nothing worse the a bad mattress
Can't speak for the hotel rooms experience, but the happy hour and restaurant is amazing. Beautiful chic setting. The food is delicious, the drinks are blah, and bland. You would think with the name and layout that the drink menus would have a little more flavor. However, worth the visit overall. Really loved the setting. Very pricey for happy hour, but pretty yummy.
Beautiful building, great amenities, and very distinct room decorations. Loved this hotel, the staff were great, and the restaurant in the building was fantastic!
My friend and I stayed here for 5 nights during the inauguration--one crazy week! The lobby was gorgeous, our room was beautiful, and love the hotel's history as a former post office. Service was overall very good, including room service several times. A few relatively minor complaints: the bills should be easy to read but we found them confusing (i.e. credits are always in parentheses and vice versa--or so I thought). The rooms desperately need more storage... even some brass hooks on the wall would help. Sonali Patel is in the wrong profession. She didn't even smile when we checked in, come on. She has zero personality, but even worse, she seemed inconvenienced on two different occasions during our stay. The hotel's location is exceptional including being directly across from the National Portrait Gallery. Its fun and unexpected design is hip but sophisticated. Jonathan, Nick and Chris Parker were wonderful--all went the extra mile also. Bellmen, valets and housekeeping were excellent.
You will love this place! Old hotel that has been renovated to modern decor. Staff is very nice and helpful. Bartender are very knowledgeable about DC. Had a really great weekend here!
Get a Spa Suite and make sure you wander around the entire hotel. You might feel like you are in "Alice in Wonderland," then again you might feel like you are in an Old Post Office..... Good Bar and Restaurant
The valets hustled me into using there services. When I got to the hotel on Saturday around 7pm a valet approached my car and asked if I was staying there. I said yes but I planned on 'self-parking' my vehicle. I then asked him where the 'self-parking' lot was that most guests use. He told me that the self parking wasn't available. That people who stay at the hotel always get valeted. I then asked him were the nearest garage was. He told me a couple blocks down the road but it's will cost about the same and that it closed at 10pm. I'm thinking I know I read on one of the sites that self parking at Kimpton cost $20-22 and valet was $53 but rather then cause a scene and sound rude to the man who was about to take my $60,000 BMW I just said "Fine, if that's the only way to do it then I'll park with you".
So we got gouged for $53 per day plus tax and tips. This ended up being around $65 per day.
We come to learn two things while walking to dinner that evening night.
1.) We were lied to by the valets. There is a garage literally to the right next to the hotel across the street . It's not visible unless you cut the corner but it's right there literally across the street NOT a couple blocks away. Its about a 60 second walk from the front door. It's large and well lit. There is a bright digital sign that says well Open late till 3am and cost $20 per day.
2.) All parking is free from Saturday night through 7am Monday in Washington DC. Which was the whole time we were there and the valet knew this because it was the first question he asked.
When I asked about self parking his answer should of been this:: There is a garage next to the hotel and city parking is free till 7am Monday. But no he chose to outright lie. Therefore your hotel earns a well deserved 2 stars.
The hotel and the actual hotel staff inside was fine. It's nice to see an old historic building maintained this well but I don't like being lied to so your review is cut in half to 2 stars. People see an out of state tag on a nice car and think it's okay to hussle people. It's not right and it put a bad taste in my mouth for the Kimpton brand. This was the first one I stayed at and most likely the last one we'll stay at.
It's ashame because the location is great and the hotel is decent but those valets are the first and last people you see when arriving to the hotel. They are hired to provide a service and are representing your brand. If they lied to me I'm sure they're hussleing others as well. I'm not a cheap person I just hate being forced into services that I don't need nor want at a self described 4 star hotel.
Beautiful historical building, friendly staff (Thank you Agatha!) on-site bar/restaurant. Awesome location- walking distance to literally all the museums, the sports place across the street if that s your thing. Super bonus is they are PET FRIENDLY which we didn t take advantage of this time, but for hotels this is the best thing ever. Will stay here again!
My sister and I were on a girl's weekend and ended up at the Kimpton quite by accident when EXPEDIA messed up our booking, and put us in the WRONG hotel. The reservation was already paid for, so ever reluctant, we had no choice but to check in. Well...they say everything happens for a reason, and the manager (Jared Kolleh) showed us that while we may not have ended up where we intended, we ended up right where we should be. He was extra nice and took AWESOME care of us! In fact, the whole STAFF was awesome from the manager down. The valet guys Antwon and Marvin not only took good care of our car, but also told us about economical places to eat and things to do that were within walking distance. This hotel is in a GREAT location and I am glad EXPEDIA screwed up this time.
Location is extremely convenient for touring around the city. Service is great, and had a good time with their complementary drinks during happy hour. The walls are pretty thin and it's easy to hear folks casually walk through the hallways and chat.
Other than the high prices of the mini bar, I enjoyed my stay & the room was very nicely decorated. I felt comfortable & welcomed. I plan to come back again soon
Old but lovely building. Yes our room was showing it's age a bit but it was clean, open, large, nice bathroom. Hotel is very pet friendly. We stayed there with two dogs while at a dog show in MD. There are some areas with grass near-by to walk dogs. One is s park across the street. Kimpton is a few blocks from Inner Harbor. There are some dog friendly outdoor dining areas there. We would definitely stay here again!
This hotel is the best of best. The staff was kind, the interior was nice, but the most wonderful thing was the building. If I go to Washington D.C. again, I will visit again.
Very nice hotel,my room was spectacular even though it was in the basement .You would never know you were in the basement until you open the curtains.Room 129 needs a plumber, sink semi clogged and the hot water (which is very hot) is on the wrong side.Staff very good, check in was no prolem ,and fast.I give you 5 stars.
We stayed for a concert, and were looking for a hotel within walking distance of the Capital One arena. So this hotel worked. Agatha at the front desk was great, extremely friendly and helpful with what to do in the area. The only down side, there is only valet parking, even though they have a daily parking listed on the website. For having my car parked for less then 24 hours, with no ins or outs on my part, I really don t think we should ve had to pay $52. I wouldn t have minded the valet price tag of $52 for one night if they had been quick or even moved at a decent speed when getting our car or helped with baggage etc. With waiting 40 minutes for my car even after texting them ahead of coming down, while spending $52 is ridiculous. Hotel and room was beautiful, but the experience starts and ends with valet/parking, so that could definitely be a lot better.
Great hotel, lovely rooms and a great historic feel. An absolutely beautiful building. Free wine happy hour and a great location close to a bunch of good restaurants.
Went here for a professional event in one of their event spaces. The hotel is in a great location, very close to metro, and in the middle of downtown DC. The event space was very nice, great decor and we'll setup for a networking event / presentation. The small bites were also tasty and staff were very professional. Great event space for small gatherings!
From the minute I walked in I received excellent customer service. I had left my phone in the Lyft car and Nicole C at the front desk was helpful, calm and kind as I frantically tried to contact the driver. She then delivered the phone personally to my room after the Lyft driver delivered it back to the hotel. From then on every time I saw Nicole she greeted me with a friendly smile and was extremely helpful. I had an issue with my assigned room and was transferred almost immediately. The hotel is in a perfect location for walking to sites and a metro stop is just out the front door. The staff are helpful and friendly, the hotel is beautiful and perfectly located, and the evening happy hour is not too shabby either. Would book here again!
Location is great but expected more after looking at reviews and photos. Room was very small with a basic bathroom with no tub. Had a better experience and much larger room with a great view at the Kimpton Donovan.
This is a great location. I had a minor hiccup when I checked in the room they put me in smelled like mold. I was moved to a different room and this was no longer an issue. I got charged a facility fee which is hard to understand given that this is not a spa or a resort this was $22 plus tax, a significant addition to an already expensive room. Gym was actually decent. I didn't try their restaurant but it is highly reviewed. Overall a good stay but I am still left wondering why I had to pay that facility fee!
My husband and I wanted to celebrate our 1st Year Anniversary with a local stay cation due to his recent deployment. From the recent reviews, I thought that Hotel Monaco would best fit our needs in the city. I made the hotel reservations with a request of an early check in. I called Saturday morning October 6th, (actual day of our anniversary) to see what time our room would be ready, and the front desk wasn t able to give me a specific time. We arrived at 2:45PM, since check in is at 3:00PM. I was greeted by Agatha (I think that s the spelling) she asked me about my day, again I told her we were celebrating our 1st Year Anniversary etc. She notified my husband and I that our room was NOT ready and to give house keeping 30 mins to clean the room. She suggested that we go have a drink at Dirty Habit and get the truffle fries. (I ve stayed at other Kimpton Hotels so I know usually they would give drink tickets out. We didn t receive anything) After waiting until 4:15PM I returned to the front desk and still then the bald head gentleman said our room was not available to check on because house cleaning has not cleaned it. He uses his radio to communicate on a time when the room would be available. Again, I mention it s our wedding anniversary and we really want to get to the room to rest before dinner. He mentions that our original room was on the 1st floor and he moved us to the 2nd floor. Room 223 needs some maintenance repairs. There is a gash on the ceiling and the wall paper has started to lift on the walls. I have attached the pics for review. Again, no card no champagne no chocolates something to enhance my experience and share in the anniversary with my husband. The TV is this room needs to be re wired as the signal continued to go out. We kept receiving an error message saying Weak Signal . We left for dinner and enjoyed a memorable meal at Charlie Palmer s who celebrated our Wedding Anniversary with a few surprises! I woke up this morning irritated with my experience. I cancelled our in room spa massages and just wanted to leave. I spoke with Sergio at the front desk and he was really nice and apologetic with the service we received from his staff. I mentioned again the fourth time, about our wedding anniversary and how I have stayed at other Kimpton hotels for memorable events and the level of service has been much more enjoyable. I do not recommend this hotel if you are celebrating anything. Hip hotel, love Dirty Habit but my experience and my Anniversary was not pleasurable at all.
This hotel was excellent during my stay for a wedding ceremony. The room was super comfortable and bathroom was cleaned properly. Overall the staff worked nicely to offer the best service and would stay again!
Agatha at the front desk was incredible! It was the first time my girlfriend and I had ever visited DC. She sent us a very well-written and informative email providing recommendations of restaurants, bars, tours, etc. and her assistance made our trip so memorable. Nicole at the front desk also assisted and was more than accommodating. The location of the hotel was perfect and close to so many tremendous restaurants and sites. We will definitely be back the next time we visit DC which will be much sooner than later based on our experience.
