Update 2/2018: I got to give this place another go, and it was much improved the second time around. Way to go Hotel Monaco!

2/2016: Modern decor and it seemed nice but the mattress was less comfortable than I was expecting and that being the main purpose of a hotel earns this place 2 stars. I would advise the management to get back to the basics because I'd have had a better sleep at a holiday inn.

And apparently my buddy's Wife's car got side-swiped between when they dropped it off and picked it up at the valet.

We got a smack on the hand because our puppy was barking while we were out. Sergio, the manager was extremely nice about it. The staff went above and beyond. Valet, bellmen, front desk staff, everyone!! The room was smaller than we expected but very lovely. We ll definitely be visiting again!

Nice studio size room. Vaulted ceilings. Clean. Friendly staff. Great location for just about everything DC has to offer. They do not do karma rewards anymore. TV goes out during rain. You can hear everything in the hallways. Wish they had a water fountain, filtered water should be free.

I am a Kimpton Karma member since 2012 and I highly recommend this route, it is free to join. Kimpton is truly service oriented and aims to give personalized service in their boutique style hotels.

Hotel Monaco is an amazing property.

The ambiance is the best. You are greeted by valet on F between 7th and 8th streets, a sprawling street in DC full of tourists, cyclists, runners, and cars. The location is by far one of the highlights of this hotel. Within a 1 mile walk or run you can be at the National Mall and amazing restaurants. I did have to call into the lobby for valet-- we arrived Friday around a busy afternoon with nice weather. Once valet did come outside they were very helpful. You're greeted by 4 staff members manning the concierge booth to the right and main lobby desk directly ahead of you. This building's historical beauty can take your breath away if you have time to notice it! They wished me a happy birthday and asked about my Nats game. (These are the personal service things you can expect to happen at Kimpton, if you tweet them or make a note on a reservation they do their utmost to personalize your stay)

Room:
When we got up to the queen room you may be disappointed. While the hallways are grand like the rest of the building the rooms are quaint. Much like when the building was built in 1839 individual rooms were not the highlight of buildings. (This was the first all-marble building and used as a post office) The room is SMALL. Enough room for a nook with a desk and SMALL bathroom. The bathroom was just too small, no vanity area here! I absolutely adore this hotel, but I now stay in spa rooms or suites to get that added 200 sq ft.

Kimpton amenities:
Kimpton as always has the best amenities. I was greeted by complimentary champagne, ice bucket, two glasses, and a birthday card on the desk! Kimpton really is my favorite :) Combined with their complimentary wine hour at 5 PM they never fail to impress me.

Above and beyond:
I forgot to pack an under tank... I looked up the closest Ann Taylor, and then called down to the conceirege to ask if they can go buy me the shirt! They agreed! Kimpton is amazing.

Brunch:
The brunch here has the most amazing outdoor patio, and indoor seating arrangements. It is very normal to see people in suits with shirts untucked, or a smattering of boat shoes and pastel colors lounging around outside, accompanied by a fully stocked bloody mary bar. I really enjoy brunch here. The Resturant has a cool separate entrance off of 7th street, but it is accessible via the lobby too.

This really could be a great place for a long-term stay. It's not the kind of place that needs Google reviews to attract guests. It's a huge property with plenty of interesting history that exudes an opulence of a past era due to it's large, well-appointed foyer, extravagant finishes, and old-style lounge and restaurant. The doors are opened for you, the staff are attentive, and the rooms are large and welcoming.

Stayed on a quick trip to DC after getting a very reasonable deal on Hot Wire. Allowed early check-in at 9am. Room was spacious, clean and in a very art deco design. Bathroom had a sunken tub and stand alone shower. Bed was very comfortable. Added bonus of a happy hour at 4pm. Silly that complimentary coffee was only offered during certain times of the day.

I love hotel Monaco. Stayed here when the Four Season could not accommodate an extended stay. Very quiet rooms that are well appointed. Friendly staff and very fast service. Thank you for making me so welcomed.

Stayed in the monte carlo room - small oddly shaped room on the first floor in a busy hallway. Location is run down - the main entrance is the size of a kitchen back door. Tiny lobby. Staff is very nice. Good location. The hotel restaurant is nicely done with a great outside area . Just nothing special. Do not pay full price for this hotel - a discounted price might be worth it.

The location is perfect if you are going to an event at the Capital One Arena. It is also close to the metro and an amazing restaurant called Hen Quarter. The hotel has a uniqueness. The rooms are a little small, but fine if just staying 1-2 nights.

I spent 4 nights here over the New Year's Eve holiday. The staff here are the best - from reception, housekeeping, at the restaurant and bar, and the bellhops. I can't say enough good about all of them, and how welcome they made me feel. The building itself is beautiful and historic. Rooms are comfortable and well done. The location is absolutely perfect. Metro stop is just across the street, as is the National Portrait Gallery. The National Mall is only a 10 minute walk away. The hotel has a nightly happy hour in the lobby, which is awesome, and a great way to meet other guests. I ate at the restaurant, Dirty Habit, for both breakfast and dinner and highly recommend it for both. If you get dinner, don't pass up the homemade corn bread muffins - best I have ever had!

This was my first time staying at the Hotel Monaco and I was able to do so for four nights. Kimpton had a great deal for their Alexandria hotels so we were able to get a great rate on a king suite with... Wait for it... A hot tub! Needless to say, the day wasn't over until we took a dip before bed. The room was extremely comfortable, roomy, the tub rocked (they even have some scented salts ready for you to add to the water), and the staff was friendly the entire time we were there.

I didn't get to try the full sized pool but its on my list for next time. The hotel has both valet parking and a garage that you can self-park in. The hotel restaurant, Jackson 20, is fantastic and a good stop for cocktails. My friends and I have been going there for years and it never disappoints.

Honestly took me forever living in the Chinatown area before I noticed how huge this hotel is, and hope prominent in the neighborhood. It wasn't until going to Dirty Habit that I saw how classy it is inside. Full sized lion statue made of metal bits is seriously impressive. Anyway, great location and at least from the perspective of the lobby and bar/restaurant, an amazing place.

What a cute hotel with personality! So close to the Capital One Arena / metro. Loved all of the little details and that it was nothing like the standard cookie-cutter hotel aesthetic. Would definitely stay again

Excellent location in the heart of DC. A short walk to many museums and eateries. The hotel itself has excellent service and was once a post office. The large hotel is made of stone with marble stairs.

Omg this hotel is brilliant they really do look at the little things. Yes it is expensive but if you are going to the citi arena then there is no better location. But the pet friendly aspect is second to none. It starts with water and cookies in the lobby. The welcome amenities for both human and hound. With a really sweet welcome notes. As we were at the concert Dotty Dog was a little worried so they took time to comfort her and make sure she was settled. Couldn't ask for more.

What a fantastic time we had at the Kimpton. Rooms were decorated beautifully. Loved the mirrors in the lobby! Perfect location and we wish we had time to spend more of it in Dirty Habit. Great breakfast although the Diablo was pretty darn spicy.

Lovely hotel, nice staff, and seems to be a good location. However, it is unbelievably loud. Feels like I am poolside in Vegas. The hotel wraps a central courtyard- which tonight is host to a DJ and some sort of dance party. It is 11pm on a Wednesday and my room is shaking, There was no warning of the conditions on the hotel s website and I was not warned at check in.

I Attempted to change rooms- front desk said that this was not possible. They did inform me that the KISS concert, I mean dance party will end a little after Midnight.

For the price, I d stay somewhere else and avoid the risk. This hotel is set up like an amphitheater, and obviously not designed for this sort of event. Shame.

Ate at the bar during happy hour before the Caps game. Happy hour food/ bar food menu is pitiful and you cant get any other food at the bar. Otherwise it would have been great. They need to add a few more choices to that menu and it would have been much more enjoyable. A bit funny/ridiculous is that the "bbq sliders" have two sizes indicated by a small difference in price. If you dont specify you will get one sad slider and they dont warn you at all... they should absolutely add some more information about this on the menu item listing. It was impossible not to laugh when they presented that to me. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy this as a dinner venue. NOT happy hour.

Top tier hotel in every category...service excellent, quality of rooms, public areas, and overall class excellent (lobby "living room" perfect for meeting people, for example), not to mention that location is convenient to all kinds of business and commercial destinations. Will definitely stay on future trips!

Spacious room with modern appliances, very comfortable shower pressure and dimmable lighting for the most part. The bed was comfortable and big with a pretty cool ornament on the wall behind it as pictured! As their other hotels we've stayed at they are indeed dog FRIENDLY, as in they not just tolerate them but treat them like a guest as well. Loved it here, and we will keep staying at their locations whenever we can! :D

I was honestly looking forward to staying at the Monaco DC Kimpton after seeing the rave reviews - however, 1st night in and it is quite the disappointment. This is stuff you'd find at a one star motel. Dust has been accumulated for who knows how long; stain of what appears to be blood; and on top of that I find torn sheets on my bed. I'm here for a week due to work - I'll update as the week progresses.

Reservation was incorrect upon arriving. Upcharged me $60.00 more to change to the room I had thought I had reserved. For the price (450+) the rooms are pretty worn, the shower / tub combos are that of a very cheap hotel. and I have to say the front desk service was uncommonly slow and not all that friendly. I have been a Monaco customer for over 15 years and I think I am done with their chain. Too many unsatisfactory stays. - furthermore, see the response below. I have stayed at their properties at least 30 times and that is the response they muster??? It outlines the lackluster customer service!

Excellent decor and service. You'll need help with your luggage up the steps but don't worry there is plenty of guys to help you. As with all Kimpton properties there is complimentary beverages starting at 5 pm the nice thing with this location is that they have more than just wine - beer and even coffee with bourbon - nice! Depending on where your room is, you might need to spend some time walking the hallways. I would have given 5 stars but the room I got was in the basement level with really minimal/barely window light. Overall good stay.

Hotel is beautiful! Great location!! Front desk personnel that I interacted with, were not the most accommodating and after working at a hotel in the same position, I do understand that you can not accommodate EVERY need. BUT, you CAN present this information in a manner that is empathetic and apologetic. Not a brusque-tone and with a not-my-problem attitude. Housekeepers were Wonderful and very helpful! Bar scene was one of the best I've seen for a hotel, in a while. The bartender was very pleasant, knowledgeable in spirits and made me a Fantastic drink!! If you get past the 2 front desk personnel that were most likely having a bad day, the hotel is excellent!
