Excellent place for a Ruben! Came here with my parents and will be coming back!
Enormous sandwiches. Really lovely meats/fillings and a great menu selection. But it's basically an endurance test for eating. If you get diabetes afterwards, that's on you. The service is fantastic, particularly Jiiamah.
They got a little lazy with cleaning the dishes, but let's be honest, with food this good nothing else they do matters. 5 Stars easy
Great pastrami and good bagels (not as good as Kettleman's) especially with their house made lox. Super huge sandwhiches are their thing.
Good foods, good service and good environment to have a brunch with friends and family.
First the positives:
The staff was friendly, and the restaurant was clean.
Now the negatives:
The food is terribly overpriced - $16 to $19 for a deli sandwich and a side is not what I would call a value.
The roast beef sandwich was mediocre at best. It wasn't very flavorful, with very basic dressings. It had chunks of very tough meat that couldn't be chewed. It also wasn't very big. When you spend a lot on a deli sandwich you expect more then a few ounces of meat.
Our daughter had some chicken soup that was probably the worst chicken noodle soup I have ever had. The broth was just water. It was like they didn't have any more soup and when we ordered it, they simply cut up some chicken chunks and dropped them in some microwaved water.
The fries were pretty good though, so there's that.
As a caveat we did arrive late, about 6:45, and they close at 8, so maybe it is better during lunch?
We would not recommend Kenny and Zuke's.
Delicious deli! Their menu is a bit on the pricey side but the food is always good and we never leave hungry
It's hard to do 3 stars because the first 1 hour was a 5 stars!!! And then the last hour was like a 1 star. I think my glass sat empty for 20 plus mins while other new patrons got served. Not really busy I'd say. So this is why. I'm at the Portland airport and had a server by the name of Erica. Everything was quick with food and she helped me pick out the right beer. (Good pick btw!!!) 5 star. I thought she was just going on break and some older gentleman was covering. She never came back. And as you can see the above took place. It takes a lot for me to give a bad review. And I dislike giving them. But someone's gotta know.
Stopped in while visiting Portland for lunch. This was probably one of the worst meals I've had in memory. I order the turkey sandwich and it was nothing more than turkey with a limp leaf of lettuce and a tiny smearing of Russian sauce. It was dry and no flavor. For the price I would have expected something a bit more elevated. My wife order a bagel breakfast sandwich. She ordered it with fried egg and it came scrambled. Again the price for what it was didn't match. The scramble was horrible, it kinda looked like a greasy soup of egg with cheese that had solidified. Very unappetizing. My daughter ordered the kids breakfast sandwich which had the same horrible egg scramble that again the waitress even asked if we wanted it fried or scrambled and both came scrambled.
We either went on a bad day or the place is going down in quality based on the other reviews but again one of the worst meals I've had in recent memory.
Nice jewish deli with a great menu and lots of options.
pricy. deep fried greasy overcooked latkes. and the poor taste to bill itself as a jewish deli while serving bacon
Comfy, friendly, yummy,, clean, courteous, welcoming.
lgbTq friendly.
Nice casual place. Great Rueben and really good fries. Nothing fancy just good food and good service.
Food is always great. But wait staff lacks any personality and seems like they are burdened to serve guests. I'm a long time loyal customer, who may not come back, just for service issues.
We had five people and the pastrami sandwiches were awful. Stale bread and quite fatty padtrami. I've been here before and didn't like it, but my family wanted to go here. This will be the last time. Kornblatts is much better. I was concerned when, while we waited for our order, I looked behind us and a man was eating just the meat from his sandwich. When we got our order I knew why he was doing that. My son had a reuben and later he said, "I just realized there hardly any sauerkraut on that reuben" What the heck is their reputation based on?
Good pastrami sandwich and good Ruben (when ordered in detail, i.e. well toasted, extra swiss, substitute horseradish for Russian dressing). Good NY waitress agreed that Rubens require horseradish, not some crappy sauce that most of PDX puts on... salad dressing is for salads not sandwiches. FYI best Ruben in the PDX area is the original Ruben at Rose's Deli. Two sandwiches, bottle of wine, one dessert was a bit dear at $80 with tip.
Once the waitress warmed up the service was good. At first it seemed like she didn't care.
When the place only has three tables occupied, why do I need to wait to be seated?
Rickety tables and chairs are an absolute no-go! Just a liability lawyers wet dream. If you are going to use wooden furniture you must have an upkeep plan for glides, tightening screws, re-gluing loose dowels, finishing, etc.
Google won't me let leave Zero stars, painfully slow, 30+ minutes for 2 waters and two breakfast sandwiches to go. Apparently they only care about you if eat in the restaurant.
I visited around 11 am, and found no wait at all. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was positive, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. My food was absolutely amazing! I would totally recommend this to anyone, and it is perfect to stop at after visiting Powell s books.
Good service, atmosphere, and amazing food. Had the Ruben with corned beef, huge, hot, and delicious. My party also ordered: pastrami fries, pastrami sandwich, and breakfast platter (actual name escapes me, was eggs etc) Everything had a large portion and was cooked perfectly. Will definitely be back.
Tasty pastrami and exceptional service. Been here a few times always a special treat! Thank you all.
In addition to the usual they have a large seliction of nonalcolic drinks. Ivbeen drinking copius ammounts of red wine and after my six shots of espresso this morning, I will enjoy a drink and a pastramy sandwich with saurkraut.
This rating strictly pertains to the pastrami reuben: it was excellent. Not exactly an inexpensive lunch. $25 for a Reuben, coke, and tip. I would give it 5 stars if the price was a few bucks less, but this is a little pricey for what it is, even though portion size is respectable.
For fans of New York style Deli's, this is a great place in Portland that has an excellent selection of foods and drink. I definitely recommend trying the Portland Soda Works Root beer. Even if you don't even like soda, its amazing.
Incredible food. Good sized servings. Overall a good place to eat in Portland. The customer service is decent. But after you get your food you are all but forgotten about.
1st time there. Not crowded, just before lunc time, but filled up quickly. Wait staff friendly and excellent. Had pastrami on rye with mustard (should have asked on side), fries and cole slaw. Slaw nice, not mayo type. Fries skinny and hot and crunchy good. Rye bread was rye, not marble. Good texture and flavor. Pastrami was cut thick layer out on slices, lean, perhaps too lean, was a little dry. Mustard was already on, but not overloaded. A little on the spicy side perhaps taking somewhat away from the pastrami. Altogether a deli sandwich as opposed to what other deli's put on a roll or white bread.
Location and staff were pleasant but the food not so much. Maybe it was an off day but in particular I did not enjoy the Reuben which was a bit burnt and very dry.
I've been here about 4 times or so. I really want to give them a chance, but I'm originally from the East Coast. I found the pastrami to be dry and over salted. To the point where I couldn't even finish my meal. Everything else I've has been 'meh' at best. Also, I've never had good service there.
My lunch special today was a half pastrami sandwich with a side of potato salad. The sandwich was NOT made from slices of pastrami but from left over pastrami crumbs. If you think pastrami crumbs taste the same as moist, flavorful pastrami slices, you are mistaken. They are hard and dry. What an insult to be served such a sub-standard sandwich and to be charged a premium. The potato salad was inedible. Top it off with a disinterested service person and you have a terrible dining experience and all the reasons to never go back. This used to be a dependable deli but they've lost their edge. Too bad.
Awesome.. first time having latkes and applesauce.very good..great servers and atmosphere.
My favorite deli in Portland even as a vegetarian! There will be a wait depending on when you come, but I think it is worth the wait. Great choices for breakfast or lunch. Try the pastrami fries and an egg creme (my Mom is obsessed!) So great!
The food is generally pretty awesome. There has been one time where I went and the fries were clearly the "bottom of the fryer" fries that were pretty stale. Many great sandwiches and delicious pastrami. I've only had the one mediocre experience, but I would still recommend giving this place a try.
Food is good but be prepared for long waits and pretty poor service. Recently went for lunch on a day that the restaurant should have planned to have more staff. Appeared they were short staffed and a line. We were seated fairly quickly outside and then waited for more than 25 minutes for the server to even bring water after having gone in to the hostess twice to ask when we'd be able to order. People seated before us were ordering. It was a huge cluster. We finally ordered and it began to rain, so we saw empty tables inside and asked to move. They promptly cleaned up one and sat us inside as our food was coming out (finally). Food was good, but jacked up pricing. The burger my son ordered wound up costing more than $17. And is was not Waygu. Every item you add like cheese, bacon, etc. is all extra. For a $12 burger there was more than $5 cost for extras. Then for my order I asked to swap toast for a bialy which I knew was an additional cost. Server asked if I wanted cream cheese, and I said yes. She didn't say it was an extra $2.50 for a small little amount of cream cheese. I could buy a tub of cream cheese at the store for $2.50. The nickel and diming at Kenny & Zuke's was ridiculous, so much so I won't go back. To the server's credit, when I asked about the upcharge for cream cheese and that it was ridiculously priced AND she never told me of the extra cost, she wound up removing the entire cost of my lunch ($20). So, at least she knew that the situation was pretty bad. My LEO was solid. Bialy was good, with the super-spendy side of cream cheese. My son ate his burger and it was good - not the best burger he's had and likely not worth the $17 price tag. Most Portland brew pubs don't charge that much for burgers and their's are better and come with fries. This $17 burger only had tasteless chips. So beware. Long wait times for good food, but with all the great restaurants in Portland, why settle for crappy service and the ridiculous upcharging?
Not only does the owner have the tempermant of a man sized baby, he is so cowardly that he is removing and banning anyone who makes a negative comment or review on his facebook page. Avoid hipster chic garbage restaurants. I was fully planning on eating here but now I never will.
You have seen the last of my business. My husband and I regularly (twice per month) ate at this establishment. Recently I was alone for lunch, there was a line of about 10 people WAITING FOR TABLES! I know this because I asked every one of them! I told the rather sullen and bothered "Hostess?" I would sit at the counter, there were 2 other people eating at the counter, she told me I would have to wait my turn. I explained everyone else was waiting for a table, she told me to get back in line and so I left and went elsewhere where my business is appreciated. Last week I went to the deli for a to go sandwich and a LOVELY woman made me a tuna on an everything bagel with red onion, tomato and cucumber, charged me $7.00. Today the same sandwich cost me $10.95.
You won't see me back there again!
Would prefer to give it a 0 star review. Arrived at 10:35 and sat outside as a table of 2. Waitress came by and gave the head nod and said she would be back but then took 10 mins to return, despite very few customers inside or out. Got the menus and decided quickly and ordered a very simple order of two egg/cheddar breakfast bagels, one with bacon, and two coffees. Mentioned how much we were looking fw to the coffee. 20 mins later, with two reminders on the coffee, she brings our breakfast and coffee together. The bagels both had swiss cheese (she did not write it down). With the drip coffees is one tiny milk, enough for one coffee and no sugar. After mentioning this comes when we are almost done with breakfast. Food was blah (of course with swiss), service was terrible (yes, she was friendly and smiled but it is fair to call-out a lack of attn to service) and prices of almost 12 bucks for a breakfast bagel sandwich. Get over yourself!
a delicious addition to portland's depraved deli scene. the corned beef & cheese french fries are a heart attack on a plate and an absolute must-have.
It's pretty good, maybe a little bland and definitely expensive. An omelette with potatoes and a side of bacon and coffee plus a tip will get you out of there for about $28.
I generally LOVE Whitefish salad on a bagel.
Did love this Whitefish salad.
Our second time here, for dinner this time, and it won't be the last. Pastrami and chopped liver on rye to die for. Great food and service with plenty of character.
Their food is mediocre at best, the atmosphere is off & not clean at all, and the prices are outrageous for what they give you. Stay away from all Kenny & Zukes, unfortunately each Kenny & Zukes brings the same, pathetic service & food. Even my husband agrees, and he's not one to hate any food lol
Best pastrami in the northwest. Darn good bagels, too.
The good - nice menu selections, most dishes are very good, one of the best delis in town. The bad - occasionally gruff service and no healthy menu selections
Lots to choose from, good food, friendly staff, and nice atmosphere.
best buy in downtown portland matzo ball soup loaded with chicken. good beer selection good service .
A great brunch spot. Authentic Jewish deli food. Rarely a long wait and very inexpensive.
Love their fresh lunch meat. Large portions decent price range. Excellent service bu be prepared for a wait for a table at lunch time
I wish I could like it, but the service is terrible. I come here a lot because of a running group, and every time I have to ask for a for here cup two or three times, ask for something to stir my coffee with, like a stir stick, ask for water cups, or raw sugar. You can stand there like an idiot thinking someone is helping you only to realize they have forgotten all about you. Just about every time.
Almost as good as a NYC deli. They do a very nice job here.
The pastrami is was the most delicious I ve ever had here, very low key joint with very nice people working here. Thank you for the great tasting food I won t soon forget. Wish you had a location out here in California.
The best pastrami sandwich that I've ever been served! So good! Great customer service!
Definitely the place to go for pastrami, in a convenient location near the Pearl.
No gloves ,hands on everything, small scabs on fingers, disgusting
Had the French toast while my wife had the latke. There was plenty of food, and it was all good. We expected more of a potato pancake, but the latkes were more like fritters. Lots of fried goodness. The French toast was also good, but what made it was the maple syrup. Well done, Kenny and Zukes!
Delicious, hearty sandwiches and more! Everything on the menu sounds amazing and what I got was fantastic!
Each time go here the pastrami couldn't be any better. I love this place!
The food was amazing, but the price was shocking. Especially for Portland.
Their pastrami is great, especially in their happy hour Reuben sliders and the Ken's Special!
Arguably the best Ruben that you will ever have can be found at this little spot in Portland.
Their pastrami and corned beef are amazing! The only downside is that they are pricey, but if that's not an issue then go nuts lol. They also have happy hour from 3-6.
As best a real delicatessen as exists in Portland. Everyone has their favorite Jewish cuisine recipes, and K&Z enters their own variations. Wish it was still open late!
K & Z is a solid diner. The menu has something for everyone and the food is well prepared. It's not fancy, it's comforting. I've tried most of the menu over the years and it's all good.
The pastrami here is legendary. Go hungry, and leave happy.
Best NY style deli food in the city as far as I know. I don't make it over much but if I want a good sandwich, I'll make it myself.
We ordered tuna melt and roast beef sandwich discs for lunch. Standard sandwich but the salad is not taste good
The pastrami and latkes here are to die for. I have never had such a good Ruben. A little on the pricey side, but worth it.
Brilliant veggie breakfast fast and friendly service and awesome people watching location.
Lots of places call themselves delis. This is the real thing from actual boiled bagels and whitefish to pastrami omelets and egg creams.
Food looked great, but the prices were way to high!!
I was not super impressed. The food was mediocre. The latkes were like hockey pucks :( The service was not great either. All of which, given the prices ($4 for two pieces of bacon) was very disappointing.
