Wish I could leave zero stars. customer service supervisor was rude, unprofessional and disrespectful. Not to mention miscommunication between 4 different members of their staff. I got 4 different stories from 4 different people.

Just like any other electric company. To all the people whining about your bills skyrocketing during winter its probably because you have an ELECTRIC furnace. And to all the people complaining about their pwer being shut off due to lack of payment are you serious? What else did you expect. Plus theres alot of assistance for you out there.

Do not go based off the information on their web site I paid the full amount showing on my account last month and got disconnected today for some random leftover amount that never showed on my account. The last time this happened it was also Thursday. I'm sure they're doing it on purpose because a lot of people get paid on Fridays and this way they can charge disconnect and reconnect fees. The groceries I just bought for my kids are about to go bad on my fridge because of this awful company and it's ridiculous that we don't have a choice who to use. I have always disliked IPL and they continue to be terrible.

Their payment options are suck. To sign up for automatic payment you can't just enter your banking info online. Nope, that's too advanced, & this century, for the only electric provider in Indy. They send you a form letter in the mail that requests you to send a voided check (or voided deposit slip for savings accts). Like many people under the age of 60, I don't use checks. I don't have even 1 to use this once.
All other utility & services providers in the 21st Century allow their customers to fill all this out online, you don't even have to ask anyone about the option, it's right there on the website to make it convenient. They want your money. I don't know why IPL doesn't want to make it easier to get paid.
As my mail isn't always delivered (thanks USPS), waiting for something to come in the mail was a risky move.....but it's also why I NEED automatic pay for my bills. This was explained when I asked a rep if they had automatic pay options.
They are outdated & lack any competition.
I long for AEP &/or Duke. Never an issue......

If I could give 0 stars I would this company setup auto payment on my account and claims I set it up. My power usage was on average 930 kw/h and in June it jumped to 2300 kw/h claiming that I am using all this energy. When I complained about it all they did was replace the meter. It dropped from 2900 kw/h back down to 2300 kw/h. They have now begun double charging my account and when I called them out on it they were claiming that I was making extra payments on top of the autopay which I did not do. This company is a bunch of thieves who punish people that actually pay their bill. I am tempted to leave this city because of things like this.

They lie nonstop. Then jack up their bill by about 50 bucks a month every other month. Their website refreshes twice when you pay them online causeing you to pay twice then they claim they can't do anything about it.
These people are as crooked as they come.
I will never go with them again.

Seriously need to get their sh*t together and send someone out to fix everyone's power that we pay so much money for. I'll be damned. I'm usually not one to complain but I am kinda salty no lie. Our power and several others went out over 12 hours ago and still have yet to get an emergency response team out. People had ambulances out here picking them up because they had no power and needed the sh*t. Seriously pay for this but won't do anything to acknowledge the fact that this is very important and needs to get handled.

I ve had reliable service from IPL for the 5 years...

I ve had reliable service from IPL for the 5 years I ve lived in Indianapolis. That shouldn t go unsaid and it s why I will continue to be a customer. However, when a customer (me) requests to transfer services from one address to another, the customer service rep s only requirement is to add the new address not disconnect the old one. Instead of relaying their unique take on the definition of transfer during the transfer request, the customer has to learn about it a month and half later after automatic payments have occurred. Fortunately, IPL will remedy the situation by getting the property manager to accept the charges, but still, what a hassle. Please review your service transfer process.

I just hung up from IPL customer service department. I have been paying my bill via the Mycheckfree website for some time. I did not have a bill on the site and I called IPL to find out why. I spoke to a customer service rep Mary who was very nice but could not provide the answers I needed so I asked to speak to a supervisor. My great luck I got Kathy. I told Kathy my dilemma about a past experience with double payments debited out of my checking account. She researched and found two of the payments and explained away what happened, marginalizing my experience. Then tells me she pays hers online with no problem. I told her, "I am happy for you that you have had a good experience but that is not the case for me." I am very computer literate. I expressed to her that I did not think she was hearing me or my concerns. She stated to me, "I don't think you are hearing me." WOW!!! I knew that the conversation was going downhill. I said to her, "Kathy I hope this is not how you train your staff to be customer service reps..." Needless to say, IPL's customer service leaves much to be desired and apparently they do not value their customers. Perhaps it is due to them having no competition in this market. Maybe the citizens of Indianapolis should petition the state to allow another power company to provide electric service to this great city and even at a lower rate. Hmmm... Maybe Duke Energy?

Kudos to IPL for responding so quickly this aftern...

Kudos to IPL for responding so quickly this afternoon after a tree brought down a power line on Dandy Trail. We heard the loud humming and saw the fire behind our yard! Then there was an explosion and the entire subdivision had no power. But a few hours later, it was all fixed. Scary stuff, but they were all over it. By the time I called to make sure they had been notified, they were aware of the issue and had crews on the way. Thank you!

I ve always had a pleasant service. don t get me wrong I don t agree with all of the way they do things. But they came routinely to trim the trees. They did come once unannounced to trim trees.. I ve never seen a little person jump a fence SOOO fast it s on video too!

Customer Service is only amazing IF YOU ARE WILLIN...

Customer Service is only amazing IF YOU ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT THEIR NOT HELPING YOU AS THE CUSTOMER! I had one supervisor that only wanted to say sorry when I was lied to when told I had to wait 24-48 hours to talk to a supervisor by having one call me back only to have no one still having had called 5 DAYS LATER! She did not want to answer WHY no supervisor had called. Only saying sorry goes back to IPL HAVING NO REAL CARE FOR ITS CUSTOMERS! When transferred to an even higher supervisor (supposedly, who really knows) she hung up on me because I refused to let her hide behind IPL as a corporate identity (meaning machines and computers don t make company decisions, PEOPLE DO). Her name is KATHY and she personally refused to answer questions I asked her pertaining to IPL s not answer questions directly instead by vague statements. I asked leading questions that walked her in a corner with her COMPANY ANSWERS that finally left her with a final either yes or no answer that would acknowledge how IPL SERVES ONLY THEMSELVES AND NOT US THE CUSTOMERS! That s when she hung up on me!
My initial call (5 days previous) was about CUSTOMER SERVICE as my service was disconnected, the bill paid and service reconnected (all by the push of a computer key stroke in their offices as I have a special electronic system hooked up to my meter that disconnects the meter electronically) all within one hour. The problem arose when they sent a tech to my house to put a note on the door telling me my power was disconnected; AFTER I HAD ALREADY PAID THE BILL AND POWER RESTORED. The note said I was being CHARGED a fee for this SERVICE . IPL actually had an option listed on the paper to tell me it s GOING to be disconnected if I don t pay (a listed amount) in the next 24hrs. So my question was why didn t IPL use that option thusly saving me all the disconnecting issues including an additional deposit and $60 fee for the tech coming out for the disconnect! She did slip and say IPL has to pay for that service (meaning they can t charge me). They seem to care about themselves paying for something. Though they don t care that WE pay when a tech is sent out for the disconnect notice even after the fact and they ve been paid so I PAID FOR HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!
But according to all the 1 star (because they don t allow 0 star) reviews IPL doesn t care and will do nothing for a better image. Because it s all about making money and being profitable so they can continue to earn their oversized paycheck.

Horrible billing process. Had some issues with my bank and some payments were returned. However, I always paid and paid their returned fee charges. Now my account only allows me to pay by cash. If I did not pay that would be one thing. If they did not charge for the returned payments that would explain their action. However, there was no loss on their part, but now this makes it inconvenient as hell. Nice to be the only game in town and can set any arbitrary rule you want.

The Power Is Out Again !
I have lived in Indianapolis my entire life and NEVER experienced a power outage until I moved to Speedway. The power has been out 20-30 times in the 3 1/2 years that I've lived here. I'm sure that's what has ruined so many of my appliances...but I have no proof of it...
The lady who lived here before me said that she had to buy extra oxygen tanks for her oxygen machine because of the power issues.
I called IPL to complain and the lady said "maybe you're too sensitive". !!!
JULY 14 at 5:28 PM the power went out again.
AUGUST 10 7:27 PM the lights have flickered 3 times and the power out once again.
OCTOBER 13 8:57 PM The power went out again...
OCTOBER 15 11:57 AM The power went out again.

Everyone be very careful about a scam going on. They pretend to be IPL Threatening to cancel your services unless you pay a minimum before a certain time. The real ipl is doing their best to prevent and warn people.

The real IPL was very kind to me and they ll never call and give you 1 hour to pay.

Meter base burned up and they came out on a Friday night 20 min after we called to disconnect the power. Then after the election fixed it, they came and hooked us up again...on a Saturday night! I was sure we wouldn't have electricity all weekend. Super impressed!

I've been a customer for my entire adult life and ...

I've been a customer for my entire adult life and never received a disconnect notice or warning prior to them shutting my electric off. My service was disconnected..no one came to the door or provided any option to pay prior to disconnect. I paid the bill immediately and the Wonderful customer service rep (that's a joke) and the supervisor Judy told me it could be up to 9p. The following day that it would be turned on. THEY COULDVE CARED LESS about the fact that its winter and were not willing in the least to contact anyone to see if the service would be cut on so that I could make arrangements for the animals and kids staying in my house to be in a warm environment. It's sad companies like this have a monopoly and we have no other services to choose from because I definitely wouldnt use their service.

Horrible my service has never been cut off until yesterday! My extension was for 1/30/20 however they still cut my service off and i had to pay $650 to get it bk on.. Last month my bill was $150 this month $300 there is no way ! I keep my heat dwn when im home and off when im gone... Fraud!!!!!

Increase our bills by $20 to pay for the new gas facilities?? That ll go over well when you have folks barely able to pay their expensive bill now!! They need to go ahead and cut Jackson s and Miller s multimillion-dollar yearly compensation instead!! That ll be a great start.
I really hope folks go to their office, website, and social media to voice their concerns over this. I did!

I'll echo what many have said about the power freq...

I'll echo what many have said about the power frequently going out for hours at a time. A couple of months ago it was out for four hours and on the Fourth of July for over eight. My wife dependent upon electricity to power her health equipment and if not for our generator she might not have survived.

Frequent outages have happened over the past thirty years, once for four days--and I'm definitely in the suburbs of Indy.

You expect service like this in a third world country but not in America!!!

IPL was very responsive to our outage knowing that several issues were in the area! Automated system could be more user friendly but getting us back up was efficient ... each operator I spoke to was friendly and helpful

They turn your service off the day before the week...

They turn your service off the day before the weekend so even if you do have the money you still are forced to have no power for a whole weekend if not longer depending when they want to turn your power back on. My deposit was 500 dollars and i wasnt sent a bill till they turned my power off 3 months after moving in like what in the actual hell man

If I could leave no stars I would. Due to covid our electricity bill racked up. We paid the bill in full and it has been 2 hours and still no electricity. I called and spoke to Darrel and he was very short and gave us no information except that he had 24 hours to reconnect. I have 2 small children in the house that have already had to sleep with no electricity for the night and I took out a loan to pay the bill. Darrel would not let me speak to anyone above him and said we had to wait it out. I am not happy with any of this. I ve never had to wait more then 10 minutes for my electricity to come back on.

I just have to give a shout out to the crew workin...

I just have to give a shout out to the crew working the East side last night. My power was knocked out by the electrical storm a few days ago, my realty company hired a shady electrician who didn't know his butt from a hole in the ground who didn't even anchor the power pole correctly or remove the tree from the power lines. He was at my house over 11 hours on a 2 hour job and did terrible. Anyways the ipl crew came and told me everything he did wrong and was going to leave without restoring power but I told them I'm pregnant, been without power 2 days my food is all going to have to be replaced. This all at 1am. I was on the verge of tears, the tech handed me the paper and went back to the truck. I went back in and laid on my couch with no air. A few minutes later i hear chainsaws and drills going full force. The guys who came were out there finishing the work themselves. I was so happy, my power was back on in less than 1/2 hour. There are some good people still in this world and a few of them work for ipl.

came here to ask a simply question about changing names on the contract since doing it at home was taking me nowhere since none of the options they gave were related to what i needed. when i get here the lady helping sends me straight to the phones where again nothing helps my questions i go back to her and she simply refused to help and kept saying i had to stay in line until i reached a human being to talk to and not just a machine I tried to explain to her that no matter what i was choosing from their menu it kept me talking to a machine. this lady didn t even bother to ask what was my question she just tried to say she was right because of the years she had been working there when i turned around to walk away she said she was only trying to help lol but the only thing she did was tell me to go talk on the phone and then proceeded to give me an attitude when i tried to explain. these people are getting paid for doing nothing.

If I could put no stars I DEFINITELY would. One of our lines was hit with a ball last year so it started hanging, we called IPL and they told us they couldn t do anything until we put a hook on the roof. We cannot put a hook on the roof because that would mean the line would be on the gutter. No help. Then today the other line fell down ON THE GROUND so we called again. They came out, did absolutely nothing for us again. I m so fed up with them. I have a 5 year old who plays outside in our yard, we cannot have lines hanging down and especially not on the ground. Thank you guys for doing absolutely NOTHING to help us out.

I paid my bill at 8am on Friday to have my service turned back on and they kept telling me that they would be out to turn it back on and they never showed up all day and now my wife and 3 kids have to wait in the cold in the middle of winter until Monday for them to come out and turn our heat back on. There is no way IPL should let anyone freeze in their home in the middle of winter like this! If our pipes burst they will be sued!

Today, during stay at home orders from the governor, a couple of people saying they work with IPL, came walking DOOR TO DOOR! The one young guy came right up to our door, with our screen open, knocked on the door, and started asking questions, wearing no mask.
How is this even allowed during a stay at home order? They are being reported tomorrow. It's b.s., and it puts people's lives and health at risk. My boyfriend and I are HIGH RISK!!! I don't need some young yahoo showing up at our doorstep in the middle of a PANDEMIC disobeying the governor's orders.
As I said, they are being reported, but in the meantime how many people have they infected?

They do not maintain their lines. If the trees are on my property they can cut them with my permission but refuse to do that. I didn't plant those trees around their line. No tree crew is going to cut them because of safety reasons. If I don't pay the bill they don't hesitate to come on private property to shut it off. If a tree drop on their line the come on private property to fix it. It would make more sense to maintain the lines before the trees overtake the lines.

Most ridiculous service. And the customer service representatives tend to have an attitude about simple questions. Also why there are outages at 4pm when it's sun shinny outside I'll never understand. Wish I could change, but power companies are the only legal monopolies.

NO POWER FOR TWO DAYS, LOOPING AUTOMATED CUSTOMER SERVICE, NO FOOD FROM DOWNED FRIDGE, NO HEAT AND GETTING SICK. WHERE IS IPL? WHO KNOWS! LEAVE A REPORT ON AUTOMATED SYSTEM EVERY FEW HOURS AND PRAY.
