Worst hotel ever! Run!!! After waiting one hour to check in (check in time 3pm and I was there at 10pm), they tell me my room is not ready yet ! How come?! If the check in is at 3, how at 10 is not ready yet?! Then when finally they said it s ready, I got to the bedroom and it s a huge mess, towels everywhere, bed sheets on the floor, clearly dirty and used even Condons in the floor!!!! Disgusting place! Rude staff. Never in my life I ve been to a worst place. Oooh don t forget the mouses, they are everywhere!!!!

The hotel pictures on the website are deceiving: the rooms are VERY old and rundown, even the so-called "renovated" rooms. The room entry doors are original to the building: thin as paper, and you will easily hear people talking/children screaming in the hallway. The location and housekeeping staff are great, though. This is a good place if you have low expectations, don't need a lot of frills, and only need a place to stay for a few days.

I have mixed feelings about this hotel. The lobby is grand with tons of marble although they cheapen it with a Disney like feel by adding in check in screens and a news stand window behind a glass. The room was much worse. The walls need a paint job asap. The mattress was old and the toilet was miniature. The room overall was significantly worse than a Holiday Inn. I chose this hotel because I had 6 hours of sleep before my train leaving from Penn Station and in that regard it didn't disappoint as its right across the street. But I'll be looking for another hotel next time.

This place was dirty and gross and there was a homeless man sleeping in the closet of our room!! We ran out of the room and told the man at the desk and he said "oops I'll get you another room, I didn't know he was still there." This is the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. The paint was falling off the wall, the shower was tinted green and the sink wasn't functional. This was a terrible experience with no refund

The location is perfect! The metro is around the corner. Don t take the taxi, thats expensive. Take the metro, for 33,- dollar you can travel unlimited for 7 days! From the hotel you can walk to: Madison Square, Macy s, The Empire state building, several restaurants and Time Square.

The rest of the hotel is negative!
The people behind the service desk are terrible! They are rude and irritating. Like they don t like there job! If you do so, just find a other job, please! So that we don t feel bad, when we check in the hotel!

The room is very loud, you can hear everything from outside. Its clean, but the matras is very hard. Several things are brooken in the room. Its all very old.

If you check out and you will store your luggage with them, to pick up later that day, it will cost you 5 dollar a bag!
We had 4 bags, so it cost us 20 dollar.
Very expensive! Normally, it belongs to the service of a hotel, but this hotel knows no service at all!

Perhaps the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. You're paying for location which is great. Horrible rooms and service is disgustingly slow. I've stayed in cheap motels that respond with more courtesy and quickness. My room's bathroom light was out and two of the sockets. It took nearly 3 calls before anyone came to come up to fix it. If you're staying just for a weekend show then sure go for it. Long stay? Look else where.

If you go on a weekend when many people are in the city in hotels, you'll pay more. If you go when occupancy is less, you'll pay less. It's an older hotel. For what it is, it is very nice. You will see a sort of cabinet, in the doors, which formerly allowed one to put coats/clothing in, so they would be washed. Hey, if you want to spend $2k/night on a hotel, go do that. That's not what this place is for. I enjoy visiting it, their staff are nice, and for what it is- a 1919 hotel still in operation- it is 5 stars, or has been for my family.

I love this hotel!!! I had a great time there. I updated the free breakfast and it was only 10 dollars. The breakfast was so good. The hotel room was clean the stuff was so nice to my son and I. I love the information desk stuff they was so helpful. I really do not understand why this hotel have so many bad reviews. The hotel upgraded me to a king size bed free of charge I will be going to this hotel again.

Its a cross between the hotel from The Shining and the hotel where Tom Hanks stays early on in the film Big. The place needs a COMPLETE refurb. It is dated and falling apart. The cleanliness of the room also left a lot to be desired. The lobby is like grand central station with a roped off section where you have to queue to get service. The location is good if you like staying in a place where 99.99% of the population are tourists. It was also shockingly expensive. This was probably a nice hotel once, not anymore.

Absolute fleabag of a hotel. The entire hotel looks like it hasn't been renovated in 50 years. Everything is old, dingy and tired-looking. Had a seminar there and unlike other, nicer hotels, they didn't even provide any coffee. My friend used the card key to her room and somebody was already in the room taking a shower.

Ridiculous check in line, check in kiosks did not work.

Water came out of the tap brown. No option to have water delivered to the room. Some employees will tell you there are vending machines by the elevators (others don t know). Vending machines don t work anyway. The store that sells water only takes cash.

The hotel tries to make the fact that it s desperately in need of renovation charming by using doors from 1910.

Not worth it at $206, but that s ok, the resort and other fees push it up to $300, at a discounted price. I can t imagine paying full price for this place.

Floors have gum on them, everything feels dirty. Gross gross gross.

Would be a nice place to stay if you like horror movies.

Edit: also the bathroom door won t close and the sheets don t go all the way down the bed. What is with this place?

The staff was amazing. However the hotel is definitely in need of new ownership and management. Our room was given away, check-in took 2-3 hours almost every night, there is no laundry facility, and there were definite signs that our room wasn't cleaned up to standard before we checked in.

They advertise "continental breakfast included", but prisons give out better breakfasts. You go through a line where you can pick out ONE juice OR water and ONE piece of fruit OR ONE pastry. My kids basically ended up with orange juice and a banana for breakfast.

WiFi is also available if you want to pay $20 A DAY for two devices to have very slow and choppy internet. You can get "business class" level internet, but that is going to cost you $30 A DAY and for only one device.

Also, shocker when we talked about our final bill. There is a fee called a "proximity fee". Basically your paying extra fees because the hotel is close to downtown.

My advise, save the money and headache, book a hotel further out and ride the subway into Manhattan.

Would not recommend this hotel to ANYBODY!! Checking in took over an hour and a half only two staff at desk, staff were very rude and unhelpful, rooms not fit for human accommodation absolutely disgusting and dilapidated, hotel does not take any feedback into consideration seems to be just an automated reply, hidden charges for services that were not used whatsoever, over 300 euro charged to card after check out, staff also tried take payment for room at desk even though was already paid before arrival, pictures of rooms on website are false, DO NOT STAY HERE!!

Very disappointed, the lobby looks decent but when we came off the elevator to our floor, the carpet was dirty, the halls are dark, the room doors are very old. When we entered the room it was nasty, dirty towels, a horrible smell, small room, mold on the ceiling, the shower was very dirty, paint coming off the walls. It made my skin crawl. Only needed a place to change my clothes for an event but I would never go back here, I didn't even sit on the bed. Hotel prices with really bad motel representation. I wanted to give no stars but it wouldn't allow me

I read reviews on this hotel and they were a mixed bag. Now that I'm here, I have to say that I have no idea what people are complaining about. Prime location. Great price. Check-in took me less than 5 mins. Our suite was spacious and clean. Beds are comfy and fresh. It's an older hotel. That was true. That's the only downside.

Cheap daily rental rate.

Cheap daily rental rate.
Took over an hour to check in around midnight because of the long line.
But random people were sleeping in the common area on the 12th floor around 2 am. I sat down near them and hoped they would move. Man did. Woman did not. So I went down to security on the ground floor and asked for the sleepers to be elected. Security at base of elevators called roving security to throw them out. Rover did come up and escort them out. Sleepers were a man and woman. Not smelly. 20s maybe.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!!
I regret not reading the reviews.
As I was coming out the restroom in the middle of the night I seen two rats coming out of the ac unit. I tried calling front desk but no answer. So had to go down stairs l and talked to manager, all he was able to do is change rooms and refunded me the $40 hotel fee since I had booked my stay thru Priceline. Customer service is -10. The only night I stayed at this hotel and it gave me numerous reasons not to ever stay here again.

We anticipated a room like the one on the website ...

We anticipated a room like the one on the website but upon arriving at our room we got something that fell far below our expectations. The suite was bigger than we thought so that was good but at some points, the carpets were held together by electrical tape. The worst thing by far was the bathrooms. The water temperature was so hard to control that we ended up being unable to use one of the showers. This was mostly because the knobs on the bathtub faucet were incredibly difficult to turn. Also, if you started the warm water you'd get water hot enough to potentially burn you. For reference it was hot enough to be coming out of a kettle. The showers also don t let out a good flow of water. The flow is so insufficient that you end up having more success with a cup and the bathtub tap. There s also this small metal door/ flap that s right below the towel rack and is covered in rust if you hang up your towel it tends to keep hitting the rusty flap. One of the bathroom doors had a broken handle that made it tricky to open. And finally one of the doors refused to stay open. None of the other doors closed automatically so we had no reason to expect that this one would be. As a result, our five-year-old sister ended up getting hit by the door.

If I could give it 0 stars I would. I can't believe they had the guts to put someone in this room. First of all, there was no lock on my door, the bed was torn up and covered in ROACHES, the bathtub HAD NO TUB...it was a rusted bottom with no floor, the walls were covered in scuff marks PLUS A BULLET HOLE, the windows were filthy and no light could make it through---on top of which, they had the nerve to say "Free Wifi" when they charge $30.00 a day for it, make you pay a mandatory fee for the facilities, and have just the worst customer service ever. I walked to the front desk and instead of a "Welcome to Hotel Pennsylvania," I got "What's Up?"

The WORST hotel I've ever been to in my life. I didn't even bother to unpack before I grabbed my things, demanded a refund (which I still haven't received yet) and ran for the nearest exit. TERRIBLE HOTEL!

The room I stayed at looked disgusting. There was a cockroach on the lamp, the room looked like it had not been cleaned in a decade. The A/C didn t work. Lights flickered like it was a haunted room from a movie. The shower tiles looked unscrubbed. At least there were toiletries and the water shower was warm.

Totally tourist! Okay. 5 thousand guests. Fine.
My friends arrived from Europe.
I telephoned their room 4 times.
I left msgs. The "house phones" have NO SIGNS designating them.
Two days later I requested the telephone in the room be checked. Maybe there was no message light working.

I went to the hotel and spoke with 8 lobby personnel.... Robotic responses from 5: bell captain, several concierge types, etc. - 3 others offered shrugs and condolent suggestions.

On my smart phone i could show my friends' names and a photograph of their actual trip reservations... airline flights and paid nights for Hotel Pennsylvania.
Nada.... No Way to get a room number.
And...
There is NO WAY to leave a written note or have a pkg or flowers delivered to a Hotel Pennsylvania guest UNLESS the delivery item shows THE ROOM NUMBER.
An American Catch 22!
NO WONDER IT'S CHEAP.

A motel 6 is nicer than this place! The place is just embarrassing and filthy doesn't even start to describe it. They had furniture in there that I wouldn't even donate to the homeless. The website says it is air conditioned? No! Oh the continental breakfast is a joke! They give you a ticket and you have to stand in a mile long line to get it exchanged with another ticket just to get breakfast. The staff needs to be educated in customer service they had the personality of a statue. I was so unhappy with my poor decision to stay in this dump. The ONLY thing it has going for itself is location.

My family and I stayed at the Pennsylvania Hotel mid September of 2013. We reserved 3 rooms, and had a very nice experience. The front desk clerk, Sheela, was one of the friendliest and most helpful I have dealt with. She had one room available early and let us check into it, and the other two rooms were ready by 1 PM. The rooms were small, but clean. The location could not be beat, the subway was across the street. I know the stories about this hotel, I am a flight attendant and we stay here on our overnights. For this vacation with my family, nothing went wrong and because of Sheela, the stay was wonderful.

Old but clean hotel that is walking distance to Time Square and right across the road from Madison Square Garden and lots of shopping! Loved the location and the staff was friendly and accommodating to our every need. (Extra blankets, pillows, etc.) If you are just looking for a bed to sleep in like us, this will do it. Nothing fancy, but CLEANLINESS is my number one priority when staying at hotels and although it wasn t the Hilton, it suited me and I m a hard person to please! Lol Who stays in their room in New York anyway?! There s so much to see and this was an excellent place to rest at night and just get out and walk around and sight see during the day. You can take a quick walk to a Broadway show from your hotel or easily catch a taxi or CityPass bus right outside the door OR, if you re brave, ride the subway with a few short steps down the block. I d def stay there again!

Worst hotel I have ever been to! Every part of this hotel besides the lobby is filthy and the service was horrendous! We waited over an hour just to get checked in and it seemed that many guests were also frustrated due to lack of service. Though the hotel is really old, the price is reasonable and the location is very accesible to a lot of tourist spots in New York. They also offer a free breakfast (a choice of pastry, fresh orange juice, coffee or tea). The room we got may not be too large, but is enough for our family of three. We had a queen size bed, 1 bathroom with shower, 1 side table with lampshade, a television (that has a weird channel listing, video hanging and sometime turning off and on by itself) and a small cabinet/closet with enough hangers good for wardrobes of 3 people for 2 days. Also inside the closet is a hair dryer and a small plastic container. The bathroom has basic toiletries like bath towels, hand towels, 2 shampoos, toilet paper and facial tissue. It would've been better if there was a conditioner and disposable slippers. Overall, our stay (3 days, 2 nights) is good as we were able to get a good sleep which is most important since most of the time, we were out of the hotel exploring.

I recently stayed here on a trip with my class. It was bad. The bed was comfortable but quite narrow, the heater was old and dirty with dust collecting inside, the bath had a leak so water would flow on the floor whilst I was having my bath, the metal pipes were rusty there were no main lights- just old, dim lamps and there was even a hole in the desk drawer. The location of the hotel is great- right in the heart of Manhattan, just accross the road from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden, a few minutes walk from the Empire State Building and Times Square as well as the view from the rooms. You have to pay $20 a day for internet, which is totally not worth it if you're staying in a room like mine. There was a TV but with limited channels- just Lifetime, Fox and BET. I was never expecting a five star hotel room, but I was expecting slightly more than this. Even the room I stayed in at the Holiday Inn was nicer than this. I didn't HATE the room- but I didn't like it either. Luckily I spent minimal time in it anyway. The whole hotel (excluding the lobby) looks like it hasn't been updated in decades- it needs a makeover.

WORST HOTEL EVER!!!! let me get straight to the point, the hotel staff were sooo rude to my family and I, we got a king sized bed for us and it ended being a full sized and we went to the hotel manager and he didn't do anything about it. we ended up having to get an extra bed and it was $100 for three nights, they don't have free wifi, it looks and smells dirty, and the lady that served free 'breakfast' (only a coffee, bread or muffin, and a water or juice) had the audacity to hit my mothers hand because my mom wanted to grab the piece of bread she wanted and they said only they could give her the bread. thats understandable but no need to hit peoples hand. bottom line, DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL !!!! definitely not worth it.

This was one of the of the worst hotel experiences I've had! Check in took more than an hour as there were only two people working check in even though there were counters for at least 3 more attendants (they had people in the back so you would have thought they'd use some common sense and bring them out front). The corridors are extremely dirty and the rooms themselves equally so. The lifts sound like they are breaking and it is clear to see the owners have not paid any attention to the maintenance of the interior/decor and don't intend to do so any time soon. Stay Away!

Terrible, horrible, disgusting. Don't bring your kids here there were no more rooms available in any other hotel for the weekend my kids cried from disgust of having to shower in a place like this. The lobby should warn you but once you go upstairs to the rooms it's a terrible, smelly and creepy place. Hotel Pennsylvania proudly welcomed guests to New York City for nearly 100 years. Often chosen for its prime Midtown location, Hotel Penn, as the hotel is often known, is just across the street from the iconic Madison Square Garden venue. The hotel is also within a short walk to Penn Station, Empire State Building, and Times Square. The hotel is also known for having some of the most reasonable nightly rates in New York.
With over 1700 rooms, Hotel Pennsylvania is one of the largest hotels in Manhattan. Starting in January 2019, Hotel Pennsylvania is going through a series of refresh projects to make sure that all guests feel comfortable and welcome for years to come.

The room is a rundown mess had to pay another $50 per night to upgrade to a "newer" room that was smaller. Location is good. Room service was responsive when I found the AC was not working because the filter was not cleaned for seemingly a long period of time - the layer of dust on AC filter was really thick. I found this to be a very old and unclean hotel. Those 1916 (?) doors are no way antiques rather uninviting and gloomy. Also found rugged carpets with full of dust. The wash room doors in my room took two people to open. I was stuck inside the wash room and someone had to push from bedroom to open the doors. Frustrating experience indeed!
I would not recommend this hotel unless you are hell bent on location. And of course there is no or tiny value for money.

I was impressed with the service of the staff of this hotel. They were very warm to guests, always smiling, and offering services. The receptionists will greet you with a smile and quickly accommodate you as soon as they see you approaching the front desk. This place is a hole, don't go here. It hasn't had a bit of work done since it opened in 1919. It's falling apart. It's dark. Has a rodent problem. I felt like I was going to catch an STD just from having a shower. Room "service" was intermittent, sometimes we had towels, sometimes we didn't. Don't ask staff about it though, you'll get shouted at. "Breakfast" is a pastry dished out in a paper bag like at a shelter. Even just getting up and down in the lifts is a nightmare. We tried the stairs once, I wouldn't recommend that.

If you have read this far then you may be wondering why I gave 2 stars instead of 1. The place is significantly cheaper then other hotels (although we still paid $270 per room per night). If price is your only criteria, it MAY be of interest to you. With earplugs in, I actually slept reasonably comfy. Wanting to spend as little time at the "hotel" as possible meant we spent more time exploring the city, which is also a plus, I guess.

We got lucky when checking in & out. But we saw some horrendous queues during our time there. There are some sort of check-in machines, but nobody was using them so I am not sure if they work, I didn't dare to ask anyone.

Not recommended. You have to keep in mind the only thing worth it is the location since it's across Madison Square Garden and Penn station. The rooms are small and old. If you are interested in the location then it's ok. I have seen other reviews mentioning about rats and roaches, but I did not see anything. Our room was on the 10th floor. If you are traveling with family and small kids I would look for another place. If you are planning to be out all day and just have a place to stay at night then it's ok.

Worst hotel experience ever! If you like cuddling up to rats this place is for you. Room was gross, front desk staff ignorant and rude. We left at 4 am and got a room at the Hilton Times Square for $6 more. Pennsylvania Hotel should be condemned.

We have been for work to NY several times but never stayed in Manhattan even when every time our work was here. This was first time we stayed in Manhattan while working there too. This hotel is great price and great location. Golden location. Airport train comes to Pennsylvania State Station which is bang opposite this hotel.

There are plenty of taxis etc too. It is one stop by subway from Time Square and close to Empire State Building. It is few stops from site where world trade centre was.

There are plenty of restaurants etc around and lot to see and shop around this area.

Rooms are historic! All modern facilities with WiFi but doors are like really old and heavy. It is a very big hotel perhaps 1700+ rooms. Gym and pool are in adjoining sports complex and hotel guest get free access.

Lot of area to work on every floor lobby.

Breakfast is in a R Cafe which is a couple of minutes walk from the hotel. There are different coupons so be sure what you are entitled to get and enjoy.

R Cafe is also good place for food or grocery shopping. Next to R Cafe is Jacks where we found prices on Lower side.

Check in took 45 minutes almost as queue is long often. So be prepared.

Overall a great experience and we will return whenever working In Manhattan.
