This hotel is a straight joke. Not only as it as expensive as the other hotels the lady at the front counter was rude as hell. I am very discussed. A hotel that has two stars should have better customer service.

The customer service is appalling, the queue time for your hotel room depends when you check in, I checked in at about 7pm and it was a 45 minute queue, the staff at the check in desk barely look at you and they aren t very polite. We had two doubles booked and the first room we got had two singles, we had to change, then the second room we got the door for the bathroom wouldn t close and it was really damp without towels, so then finally they gave us a clean working room, despite the room changes not being our fault the woman at the desk rudely told us it would be the last time that we could change acting like it was our fault. You have to pay 7 dollars pp for breakfast and you only get 1 pastry and a hot and cold drink, you could get this breakfast cheaper at a deli or even by buying the food for breakfast at target which is opposite the hotel. The house keeping staff were much more better and accommodating than the customer service staff, I nearly left the hotel at how blunt they were being. The only good thing about the hotel is the location, however if I could next time I would go to a different hotel, I really got put of by the rudeness of the staff. Also the bathrooms need renovations, they are damp and plaster is peeling of, it looks like something from a $50 a night hotel not a $300 a night hotel.

Great location right across from Madison Square Garden. I was able to easily backpack around to everywhere in the city on foot each day without spending a massive amount on the room. Also it's right across from Penn station and has a shuttle that runs to and from the the airport (I flew from LGA) for 16$ a trip, a lot cheaper than Uber or a taxi.

Luce in housekeeping on the 8th floor helped make our stay a positive one. She personalized our stay by calling us her guest and ensuring that all issues in our room was take care of. My friend and I share these comments. If there is an employee of the week, month etc. Luce is the lady. Go Luce, Go Luce, Good job, Good job. We gave her a 5 square rating but this should be higher.

My friend handled everyone's accommodation booking...

My friend handled everyone's accommodation booking on this trip - I shouldn't have gone looking at the reviews, because they kinda freaked me out beforehand! So I promised myself if it was a nice experience I'd leave a nice review to counteract all the scary ones.
We came to New York for New Japan Pro Wrestling / Ring of Honor's G1 Supercard show & all the related events, so since it was at MSG this place was right across the street. It also by total coincidence ended up being where all the NJPW wrestlers were actually staying, which was the absolute definition of surreal.
We checked our bags around eleven and were gone over at Matsuri in Brooklyn til around 9 - my friends left a little earlier and so were probably back for actual check in time, we definitely were not - by the time mum & I got back there were no two double bed rooms left of the tier we paid for, so we got nudged up a little to a one-king-sized bed room which I gather was one of the newly renovated ones that just opened, with the option to switch the next day. We never did, though, because it was quite a nice room on the 10th floor. New carpets, nice clean bed, freshly touched up bathroom, new furniture. Mattress was a little hard for my tastes but mum likes hers firmer and loved it, so different strokes I guess lol. Top tip - when shutting the shower off, turn off the hot water nozzle before the cold! I'm glad my foot wasn't further forward when my idiot self did it the other way.
I think it must be the very early riser indeed who gets a full breakfast on the vouchers - our earliest visit to the little cafe was around seven thirty, I think, and we got danishes / juice & tea. But they were really nice apple danishes (the cherry ones the next day were even nicer) and kept us going until nearly ten that night 'cos we didn't have time to eat in the interval.
Staff were always very nice to us - in fact one of the guys working on the ongoing renovations was the one who showed us how to work the keycard when we couldn't get the door open on Friday morning lol.
There's a little shop that had stamps, one that sold postcards, and a postbox just near the cafe, so I could mail my friend her promised NYC post card, too...thankfully without too much more walking lol.
Granted my positive view might be a lil coloured by the fact that there's only one place in the world I can say I hugged Hiroshi Tanahashi, and that was at this hotel...but overall it was a wonderful stay :)

I booked the classic room. Room is very nice. Got upgraded to a king bed for free, which also included a killer view of the empire state building. I was hesitant to book here after reading some of the reviews but since I've been here everything has been great. Valet service was fast, and front desk checkin was fast considering the line was pretty long. So far so good.

Being "historic" is not an excuse for not renovating or updating your rooms and accommodations. Although it is conveniently located, the quality of the room was abysmal and did not reflect the pictures they show online. I've paid comparable rates for rooms that are orders of magnitude nicer, in NYC. The paint was chipping, the AC leaked onto the floor, art had ben removed from the wall, the bed was old and uncomfortable, and the carpet needed cleaning.

This place is old it smell. Upon check in they gave us a dirty room. Then the next room had black mold. Worst place ever. They need to do some update to the building . we slept with lights on felt like bugs crawling on me when I was sleeping. Dont not stay will be calling for refund.

First, the monitors in the lobby to check-in didn't work. Then the lobby was like Grand Central Terminal--noisy, crowded. Then the line to check-in was nearly an hour wait. Then there's a surprise fee you must pay to check-in for free wifi (which we didn't trust, didn't use), for a free continental breakfast (where you are limited to one pastry, 1 coffee, 1 juice--and didn't use), a coupon for discounted meal at a restaurant (didn't use) and use of the gym/pool (which we also we didn't use). The line for breakfast, if we even wanted to use it, was over an hour long as it wrapped around the lobby! We're in NYC--why would we limit ourselves to a very limited menu when options are abound right outside?? All of those, which we didn't use, cost ~ $34. Then the room was old, dated and dirty--with stained towels with holes! I wore flip flops to shower in the grey (used to be white) tub. So, needless to say, spend the same (including the check-in fee), or a little more for better accommodations.

It's always busy here. In front and in the lobby are filled with people. Guest and those selling to guest. It was raining when I went so the front was filled with tourist and those selling umbrellas. As you go up in floors the traffic and noise dies down tremendously. I was there for a conference. The AC was to high and froze many of us out. I had the right mind to ask if the AC could be turned down, then Wala, it was. No more cold. Conference space was good and spacious, very accommodating.

this hotel is the worst hotel I've stayed at in the world. I guess it must have been very inexpesnive , it certainly is now. There is no other hotel that even comes close to this price. Had AC break during summer, changed rooms, AC only went to 78 in the next room. Changed rooms third time and the pillow had dirt all over it!!!! WOW. Took the pillow, went to the lobby and threw it on the reception counter. Security walked me out and my friends had to go into the room to get my stuff.

No complaints from me! The first room I had was a dump but I expected that...I booked through expedia so I expected a low end room. So I upgraded and my room was great! I left today and the next time I go back to New York I will book my own room at the Pennsylvanian and not through expedia. No bugs and no mice. Great location!

A hotel that ABSOLUTELY you should NEVER choose to spend your vacation. They have little staff to check in, the photos on the internet looks good what is really a LIE, the walls are DIRTY, the bathrooms are not remodeled, the room is dirty with spiders and cockroaches, the A/C it wasn't worked, we asked to open the windows and the dust from the window got inside the room. We buy flip flops to be able to bathe, the doors are of the 1900, we stayed there only for a couple hours, totally unacceptable. PLEASE NEVEEEEER choose this hotel to spend even one night ...

The room was absolutely huge and relatively expensive. But that was just because they didn't clean to other the rooms and we got upgraded. I really really cool I don't like how heavy very heavy the atmosphere is. mean the lobbies great it's a very historic building and its even before they had like ventilation shaft but I mean the decor could use a little update and maybe the female Ghostbusters could stop by and like get rid of the creepy feeling shining ghost

The rooms are very poorly maintained. There was a hole in our wall and the floors are covered with dirt and grime. The shower was broken so you couldn t really shower. We tried to call guest services to get a pillow sent up to the room and we let the phone ring for 20 minutes before we just got up and went down there to get them ourselves. We still waited 20 minutes for that as well. This was not a good experience for its price point. The location is nice but I highly recommend staying elsewhere.

Overall frustrated with my stay at Hotel Pennsylvania for the following reasons.

- One hour waiting time to check in at 8:30pm
- One and a half hour waiting time to leave luggage at hotel post checkout at 11:00am
- Extra charges for Internet
- Extra charges for luggage storage for a few hours

Positives:
- Location
- Cleaning lady is really pleasant

Save your money, get an Air B&B.

This hotel is one of the most expensive places I've ever stayed in and it is a complete dump.

My first room had a mouse in it. Second room ("suite") had questionable stains and burns in carpet as well as shower that is either scalding hot or ice cold.

I was also unable to get a copy of my receipt after calling, emailing, and requesting assistance through their website.

The rooms are not clean. Check in took forever. It literally took me an hour and half just to get into my room. The manager was rude(African american working on 23rd May in evening shift). He handed us the key, we went to 8th floor to our room and found that the key was not working. He didnt even care to apologize and simply threw the same card(key) and said " Try it one more time". Are you serious? Is that the way Hotel Pennsylvania train their MANAGERS?
Its a big no from me to get into this junk again.

I hated my stay we got our money back the way they showed on the internet it is not the same. When we found our room there was a PERSON sleeping in our room and then they had bugs and smelled like marijuana. Also they would allow people to smoke where there is kids. Please do not book this hotel they are a rip of and if you want a decent hotel save you money and go somewhere else please.

Very good location! The price is the best around the area. The rooms were smaller than I thought. The beds were comfortable enough. The bathroom was very dirty with hair on the floor and the tub/shower, some red liquid around the toilet, and mold (very big and hairy one) by the mirror.

No updated rooms were available so I was stuck with a room that looks like it hasn t been touched since the 1970s. The a/c doesn t work and the room smells stuffy/odd, the carpet is old and stained and the bed linens are cheap and sketchy. While the sheets were clean, the bedspread was stained and ugly. If there had been any other room available in NYC (less than $400) I would have taken it, but there wasn t . The front staff was very nice (even though it took an hour to get checked in) but I will not be back.

WARNING!! DO NOT BOOK!! LOOK ELSE WHERE!!! The worst customer service ever, took over 2 hours to check us in, upgraded up to a new suite only to be chucked out a few hours later, over charged us $500 without asking, told there was a pool and sauna by their staff and later finding out there was none!! Plus the rooms are not as pictured!
Don't waste your money, the subway is easy to use, book elsewhere and commute!! At least you'll be happy!!

Worse hotel I've ever stayed in. Clerk nice. Said she gave us one of the newly renovated rooms. When we got in it, there is a desk but no chair to use to sit at it. There was no foot stool, but I guess it doesn't matter because there is no room. In the bathroom the toilet is so close to the wall that you can't comfortably sit on it because you leg is pushed up against the wall. The sink is a pedestal sink with no where to put your toiletries to clean up. There is no fan in the bathroom but I guess that's ok as there was no hot water or water pressure. When we went to go to bed, we tried to adjust the air conditioning, but no matter what we did it would not cool the room.

I had an old room on the 17th or 18th floor. It was big, with a large bed, and a bit shabby. But I absolutely loved it. It was on a corner, so I had a great view. The water pressure of the shower was astonishing. If one could point the shower head out of the window, I think it could spray two or three blocks away.

Decor and furniture is outdated but it was clean, affordable, it is right near a subway station and easily walking distance to Times Square. For a hotel in the City it was fairly spacious but it was very noisy. I was on the tenth floor and could still hear things happening on the street and you could hear the people around you/in the hall talking.

Other than that, I was very pleased with my stay.

I've been reading these reviews and honestly I'm shocked!! This hotel was horrible! The room felt damp, the carpets were damp, the heater in the room was not working, we had to get a maintenance person to come up to our room twice to fix it, not pleasant in the middle of winter. The ceiling paint was flaking and the bathroom was gross, honestly I would never stay there again. The hotel needs a major renovation and I'm shocked the City allows this place to operate in this sort of condition.Over all, horrible experience.!!

The room was very dirty and looked like it hasn t been worked on since the 80 s. Is the business model to charge people for location and completely forget quality standards, knowing that they have to stay anyway? The bed covers were also stained. Thin walls didn t help when a drunk neighbor started yelling in the middle of the night. Not a good experience.

WORST. PLACE. EVER! The wall paper was chipping, the air conditioner was pretty rusty, litterly. And the toilet was, no joke, the size of the one at my child s daycare. The carpet was brown and really...used. We had a great view... the back of another building. I was with my parents, and they where mad that it cost more then it should for what we got. My family complains too the manager VERY RARELY, but we did it twice. We complained about the room, and the fact that in the website, it looked really modern, unlike our room. We moved rooms twice, still not a little satisfied. We planned to stay for 3 nights, and that became 1. In the end, we packed our bags, and WALKED a couple blocks IN THE MIDDLE OF DECEMBER! We were not expecting this, so we didn t put on a lot of winter clothes. The place we stayed at in the end was SOOOO MUCH BETTER! This proves not to believe everything you see online.I WARN YOU NOT TO STAY HERE!!!

I've stayed here multiple times. It's centrally located and there's a major metro stop (penn station) right on the corner. Also, the price is always decent. The place is in major need of an overhaul, though. Last time I was there I saw black mould on the ceiling (main reason for the 3 stars). That being said, I'll stay there again.

I love the Hotel Pennsylvania. It's location can not be beat, especially if you travel to NYC by train as I often do. It is right across the street from Penn Station. It's a huge, older hotel with mostly smallish rooms but good for NYC. Shopping around can get you some really good rates here, too.

My room was great, but other rooms were shite. I shared with two others, and we had two super king size beds and a smaller portable bed, however two of us shared a king size bed and the other had one to themselves. The room was clean and tidy with a fab view of the city and the bathroom was great. We had a flat screen TV with various channels and were able to access wifi. I travelled to New York with my college so there were several of us with rooms there, other rooms were awful, for example they had ancient box TVs and, single beds, and rubbish views, as well as being quite creepy and eerie. Overall I would definitely recommend the hotel but if your room is shite make sure to ask for a room change!!

Wanted to say it s the worst hotel I have been to ...

Wanted to say it s the worst hotel I have been to at this price range, on second thought, it s actually the worst hotel I have ever been to ,period. Rude, low efficient staffs who clearly hate their jobs; ridiculously dirty and straight up depressing room and decoration that will sure rub off and lower the quality of your entire trip. Do not trust any good reviews, they are clearly bought. If you have seen the condition of this place, the fake good reviews sound sarcastic. Do not stay here for any reason they give you, by historical they mean ancient dungeon that was never cleaned and have rats running around , I guess the location is fine but the transit in NYC is way too good for you to stay in a dungeon like this and you are absolutely not going to enjoy your trip living in such terrible condition despite the location. I feel ashamed for my family to give money to this place so they can keep open another day and it feels morally wrong to not warn others to keep away from this place. I cannot stress how terrible a decision it is to stay here, if you are considering staying here, just know that the 30bucks you are saving is going to cost you the entire trip and traumatize you for weeks to come. Please take your money anywhere else and let this place die for the betterment of humanity.

This Hotel is a ruin for its perfect location Manhattan.
Broken bath tubs and furniture.
Decading rooms carpeting and beds.
And Bugs, rats and mice.
Staying here in New York was a great idea for a group of Exchange Students crowning their trip to the USA, until the mice problem started.
Having mice and/or rats which were eating stuff out of our luggage leaving fecies in our room we decided to change it.
The staff and in particular the Hotel manager on duty weren't helpful at all telling us that there was no rooms while checking more and more guests in without a prenotation leaving four of us at 3:AM with a room with mice and no place to stay.
So we had to sleep on the floor in one of our German girls on a extremely moldy humid and cold floor.

3 to 4 stars. I really can't decide. Say 3.5.

Fantastic location!
Great staff!
Awesome price for the location. It's directly across the street from Penn Station main entrance.
Very convenient.

However, this is an old hotel which has its cosmetic issues. The lobby looks great but the rooms and hallways are a bit run down and show their age.

There was no fridge or microwave in our room which was disappointing. I would at least like one of the 2. It WAS CLEAN but it was aged. When we arrived the smoke detector was making a chirp every 90 seconds or so. We told the front desk clerk (very pleasant) and went out exploring for a couple of hours. It was fixed when we returned.

The breakfast is sub let to a restaurant just a stone throw away. Very easy to get to. They offered a choice of bagel/muffin/Danish, fresh fruit cup, and a coffee or OJ. It was simple but good. You can also upgrade to the full buffet for an additional $10 per person. We chose not to.

The bed was comfortable. The towels/linens were economy but they were clean.

Overall, if you are looking for a reasonably priced place to sleep on your NY adventure I'd recommend this hotel.
If you are looking for a fancy place then you will have to fork out much more money.
