If you have to get somewhere on the LIRR or Amtrak, this is pretty much your only choice! But seriously, Penn Station is a dump, but there's a certain charm in that. If you grew up outside NYC in the '70s and '80s, this is the New York you saw on TV. Grimy, seedy, dirty...

This place is Manhattan NYC history.

This place is Manhattan NYC history.

Very fancy as you can tell in its heyday they catered to the rich & famous. The marble everywhere, the amazing details in design and architecture.

Rooms vary to your budget, which is awesome to be in the heart of NYC and it be affordable.

Location is walking distance to Empire State Bldg, Madison Square Garden, just so much. This is where Manhattan started and it has everything

Highly recommend

Avoid this property! The line to check in was very long and only 3 staff member working. This hotel was disgusting. The room was dirty, the bathroom was completely outdated and the pits. There were flying insects in the bathroom so I needed to keep the bathroom door closed to avoid them flying into my room. Fortunately, there was a Target across the street where I could buy myself a twin set of sheets and I used those to create a cocoon for sleeping.

Spent a week here. Bad hotel. Stay away. No hot tub or sauna, they do have a deal with a gym you have to walk a block outside the hotel to get to. Hot tub and sauna are broken in said gym but feel free to lift weights on your vacation. The hotel smells like urine and marijuana. Since we were staying a week, we (the wife and I) paid extra for a room with a fridge so we could save money on meals. We got groceries but forgot forks and spoons, no problem right, surely the hotel will give us a couple but no. They directed us to K-mart. That picture the web sight shows of your room, ahhhh ha ha ha. Picture that but in a crack house, that's your room. We paid extra for a room with a larger bed too but it barely fit us. If one of you rolls over you'll push the other off the bed. Not happy. Spend a few bucks extra and get a place that doesn't suck.

Appropriately priced hotel near Times Square. Clean and cozy rooms in historic building. Complimentary breakfast that hits the spot. Our thermostat was broken, so our room was rather warm for sleeping. Would stay again!

What unbelievably terrible service. My girlfriend was treated so rudely we wanted to move hotels. Unfortunately the staff made such little effort to even carry our bags, I was forced to drag three suitcases with a broken leg. Overly emotional staff with an inability to help others unless compensated for tips. I will never stay at this hotel again. ATT: Management - the staff need some basic training.

I will report them to Bussiness Better Bureau and try contact the city of NY code enforce.
This hotel is unhygienic there are mice in the rooms and mold in the ceilings bathrooms and walls. the attention at the front desk was very bad there were other very angry guests claiming the room change for the same problems. They do not take into account the complaints due to the large volume guest daily for them we are just one more number.

Words cannot describe the horrid experience I had here. My first room had black mold along with live and dead mice in it. The second room's shower was broken. After I checked out I realized that I had to use the restroom. They directed me to the restroom downstairs. Ok whatever I can walk. What they didn't tell me was that it needed a room key to enter. So I waited for someone to go in. The restroom itself smelled like there was a 4 year old festering water leak, combined with stale urine, and feces. It also looked like a drug den, though only slightly more than the rooms I stayed in. I'm generally pretty lenient but do not stay here. Don't. Unless you hate comfort. If you hate comfort you appear to be their target demographic. Oh wait I forgot to mention. Someone vomited on the buttons in the elevator and they didn't clean it for two days. I had to say something to someone and I only assume they cleaned it as I didn't witness it myself. Yup. Classy.

This is the worst hotel that I have ever stayed at. I am someone who travels frequently and I have visited a number of countries but I have never stayed in a hotel as bad as Hotel Pennsylvania.

The staff personnel are extremely rude, unhelpful and unfriendly. They are completely unapproachable. I dreaded having to go to them for any queries or assistance.

The rooms are not in good condition and they do not even have common toilets at reception. I had to use the toilet in the basement near the luggage storage room and the condition was appalling.

I would not stay at this hotel even if I was offered free accommodation.

The only redeeming quality was the location. It is within blocks of so many great attractions. I booked through a third party site and nothing went as it should have. At check in i was told they had to place a mandatory 100$ hold on my card. That of course took away from my spending cash and limited my experiences. And the upscale class and atmosphere stopped at the elevator. Dirty, dimly lit hallways. Bleach spotted carpets. The smell of marijuana. Then the room.... Spacious, well lit, but not well kept. Stained carpets, dust, old furniture. The bathroom seemed to be cleaner than the room. The tub, however, wouldn't stop running and was cracked and peeling. At least the bed was clean. Hard, and worn, but clean. It did have tv, and wifi. The tv remote barely worked. We had, what amounted to a lovely view, out of a dirty, very dirty window, at a brick wall. The staff, at least was very pleasant after my initial problem at check in. The young lady at the travel and sightseeing info desk was especially helpful. With a bit more housekeeping, and a few upgrades, this hotel could be amazing. But otherwise, ill be booking somewhere else on my next trip.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL.

I can't even believe I have to write this review. But this place is so bad I'm sitting up at 2am in my hotel room at this horrible hotel, typing this review up.

Where to begin: I checked into this hotel after a long flight from California around 11:30pm. I had booked a King size room in advance, in the "newly renovated rooms".

When I get here to check in, there's a line full of patrons waiting to talk to someone at the service desk, and the lady behind the desk is fiddling around with something on the desk completely ignoring the growing line of people waiting to check-in/talk to someone.

I'm standing there for about 10 minutes, and she doesn't look up a single time.

Finally, I ask the guy in the front of the line to just go talk to her, and as he approaches her she looks up and says "next" as if we had all just showed up.

OK, that's annoying, but whatever. Maybe she's having a bad day.

When it's finally my turn to check in, the lady takes about 15 minutes to scan my credit card and ID. Probably the slowest check-in process I've experienced in my entire life.

I finally get my key card, head up to my room: and as soon as the elevator doors open I know I've made a horrible mistake. The hallways here reek. The building is absolutely disgusting. The rooms haven't been touched in probably 100 years.

There's the smell of mold EVERYWHERE. My "renovated" room has a shower head that's literally detached on the floor, and the oldest possible bathroom you can image.

Everything in the room looks like it came out of an antique store, one that hasn't seen human life in 100 years.

The bed sheets were covered in black stains, as was the chair. If this is their renovation... I literally can't even.

And to top it all off, this wasn't even a King bed... It's a single.

So I go back downstairs, and talk to another lady who's now at the desk (after waiting forever in line again).

I tell her about the situation, and she argues with me and tells me that I AM in a King room that's newly renovated. I just sort of stare at her shocked.... I told her that it isn't a King (maybe the computer has the wrong info?) nor is it renovated. Then she tells me well, there are no rooms left anyway, so I should just check back tomorrow. No apologies, no nothing.

So I go back up to this awful room, and call down to the operator to request pillows. The time is now 12:30am.

I have sleep apnea, and can only sleep with my head elevated, so pillows are mandatory.

The operator tells me she can't send more than 3 pillows up because it's against the rules, then hangs up.

So I'm sitting in my room waiting... And waiting... And waiting for pillows. Nothing comes.

30 minutes later I call back and ask about it, and she tells me they are on the way. So I wait again...

Another hour has passed. It is now 1:30am. This time I call back, and she tells me to hold and she'll transfer me to a manager. So I'm waiting on hold for 5 minutes, and nothing.

At this point I'm totally fed up, so I just walk downstairs. I wait in line AGAIN and finally talk to the manager. He calls someone and tells them to bring me pillows.

So guess where I'm writing this review from right now? Hopefully it's obvious by now... But that's right... I'm writing this review in my room, still waiting for pillows, at 2:30am... It's been 2 full hours trying to get pillows.

So, the only thing I can tell you is this: it doesn't matter what you read about this place online, or how much you can get a room for. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT *EVER* STAY HERE!

MY EXPERIENCE WAS AWFUL! NEVER GO THERE! Staff stealing and touch your personal belongings do not leave anything in your rooms you want to keep, the rooms were outdated, there was mold on wall of the hotel room, hairs in bed covers, cockroaches and bedbugs, spooky Corridors surroundings make you feel unsafe. A cleaner also walked into our room as we was getting changed and asked us if we wanted a cat.

Moving on, the hotel lobby was full of dogs; dog food, dog wee, dog poo scattered all over the floor and wasn't cleaned up for an hour (we were waiting in the lobby as the hotel had not got the rooms ready at the right booking in time.)

I guess this would be a better hotel for animals rather humans.

In addition to the above points one of the Corridors smelt heavily with weed and the lobby had a scent of it to at times.

We stayed in a group of 51 with various room and all were Shockley awful and ruined are experience in New York, as we was worried about going back after a day out. Staff were rude pushed you out the way but on the up side my bathroom was clean but the hotel provides insufficient quality cleaning to each room as most of the groups bathrooms were horrific.

I hope anyone that goes to this hotel has the time of there life as you can tell you couldn't get a better experience than this!

Location: The location was right in the heart of everything! next to Macy and Penn Station and a 10 min. walk to Time Square and Rockefeller Center.
Hotel: Old and lots of character. Room is decent and clean enough for the age of the hotel (definitely nothing fancy). Lots of Elevators but slow getting on and off during check out time with no stairs leading to lobby (had to take creepy fire exit to outside and around to front of hotel just to get to lobby to check out).
Staff: Friendly
Valet: Very helpful and car was fine when returned. However, found a parking violation ticket in my cup holder after I had left, and Hotel managers do not return calls and are hard to get in contact with to address this issue!

The rooms look worse than the pictures. They are very old and dated. You're better off saving money and going to a budget hotel like econolodge, this place is not worth the money. 2 stars for the view and location. But, the operator had subpar customer service the many times I had to call. Bathrooms were not very clean at all. I will never stay here again or recommend.

Stay away from this hotel.
They will make you pay one extra night if you arrive before 3pm. So, basically you pay 2 nights for 1 night.
The city should look into their deceiving policies and stop it.
Their manager Jean is just there to enforce this and take advantage of tired travelers.

Again. I do NOT recommend staying in this hotel. There are better hotels in the city.
Stay away! Stay away! Stay away!

The line to check in moved so slowly! It took us half an hour to get to the front desk. When we finally got there it only took a few minutes to do everything. So why did the line take so long?! Because this hotel is in the heart of the City of New York I went there with great expectations and disappointment hit me right in the face, that place should be purchased by the state and turned it into a homeless shelter, and the sad thing is that for a place of such history there is not one thing like a mini museum to let visitors know the history of this place, not a cafe of it's own for guest to feel comfortable in the morning to sit and read a paper over a coffee, You get a coupon every morning to ho on the outside of the hotel to a buffet and you are not getting what the place is serving or prepared for its customers, You have a separate table at the place with two people with screwed up face serving you some hard bagels or a half of a muffin, a choice of a glass of juice, a coffee, or a bottle of water, and a plastic container with a few grapes and small slices (chunks) of pineapple. Lol Smh! I embarrassed myself and my guest.

Where do I start?! I d give 0 stars if I could... we booked this hotel last minute because it was he cheapest.. As soon as we walked in the room, we were greeted with the stench of cigarette smell and humidity...Gross

The marron carpet is from 1800 and Looked dirty.. I dared not take my shoes off.

The bedsheets looked dirty and old. No way I was gonna sleep on there!!

2 minutes after getting to our room, we were on google trying to find another hotel
to sleep. We left 10 mn later!! This hotel looks like management just gave up and it s unfortunate since the location is central!

Save your money and time and book a different hotel.

Hotel Penn is one of the very few cheapest hotels in midtown Manhattan. The quality of breakfast is poor. You get juice, lukewarm coffee and a very sweet pastry. The line is long for breakfast. Third world countries provide excellent breakfast but Penn does not care about good service because of their low cost and location. Room is cleaned daily.
You are close to subway; bed was comfortable. Bathroom is cleaned daily. You get a TV no microwave. The door is built like a dungeon to hell which gave us the creeps.

This is the worst hotel I have stayed in and I have stayed in hotels all around the world. The staff is absolutely rude, I came in the morning and waited, it was very crowded so I lined up for the check in at 12. After a long wait I was told checkin is at 3 and then the person called for the next person without me even replying. The normal thing to do is saying that our room will be ready at 3 or blah blah ... customer service stuff, not even the key to the lobby's washroom. I walked away and went back to the waiting area, I was just too tired waiting since 8 am and then the long line. I later on used the kiosk for self check in. In the morning I went down for the breakfast and they needed a voucher so I went to the front desk to inquire, as soon as I said excuse me... the lady screamed at me WAIT! I told her I need to ask about the breakfast she just pointed at the loooong check-in line. I just left! I tried to speak to a staff member or a manager but that was also frustrating, when I finally got to the manager with boiling blood I was told to wait in another line. To add to that, no minifridge in the room, no kettle to make tea, breakfast is a nightmare as you wait in line for a cafe, a scene that is so humiliating, internet is 20$ a day, furniture is broken and the rudest staff you will encounter and many more. I recommend pay a little more and stay in a better place, somewhere they understand even slightly the meaning of hospitality and treat you like a human being. I am checking out tomorrow and never coming back, whatever extra money I would have spent elsewhere brings in more value than I thought. One more thing, don't buy sightseeing tickets from there, go from the ppl outside, not because of price but what you will get from them requires you to travel to the office to get the paper tickets and not the digital card.

I booked 3 nights with Hotel Penn. The charges were not clear even though I read over them several times. I was forced to agree to the charged before I could see what they were or enter my CC. When I arrived, the room was small but ok. The TV was an old tube TV that only got local stations. I called the front desk and was told to try pushing the channel buttons. I was able to convince her that didn't work and they brought and new TV that was nice. The shower did not drain and had a crack in the side that leaked as the shower filled with water. I called about that the first day and no one ever came. I had left for a meeting the first day and my traveling companion left the room. When he returned he found his key didn't work. The front desk lady seemed very put out that he wanted a new one. Instead of just verifying the information on file she made him provide another credit card. We will be watching closely for unauthorized charges.

This was by far the most disgusting place I have ever stayed in. There was left over bags filled with illegal drugs underneath my matress and the sheets were ridden with bed bugs. When I approached the manager he was rude and threatened to give me none of my money back if I mentioned my experience. The manager and the staff were all extremely rude, unprofessional, and not willing to help in any way. They accused me of lying about the bed bugs that were crawling all over my mattress and sheets. I took pictures to confirm this. The worst place to stay. The placement may seem worth it but the management staff and the sanitation quality ARE NOT WORTH THE PRICE. Do not stay here spend the extra couple hundred dollars and get a clean hotel room with nicer staff. This place is atrocious.

I don't know what everyone's problem is with this place. This is the second time I've been here and it's been great.

If you're expecting a luxurious place with top notch fancy rooms then this is not your place. If you're looking for a place to rest your head and shower then this is your place.

Slightly dusty around the corners of the room and the AC was a little noisy but the bed was clean, the room didn't smell and the lady at check was extremely nice. She even gave my girlfriend and I two free drink passes for the bar that's connected to the hotel.

Would go back again most definitely, great price and location!

Service was great. Internet wasn't warking in our room. I think it was Madison Room (18th FL, out of elevator bank to the left and first room on the left, right next to a staircase). The staff was nice enough, the hotel is just dirty. Our bed was clean! But the carpet, mirrors etc. just were bad news. The main areas of the hotel are gross and stained.

My experience did not start off great. I paid almost $400 for a one bedroom suite. It looked like a motel the doors were old stains on the wall. Couch tore up. I was appalled. Since i was having a hotel party i thought i could make the most of it. Until my friend discovered a mouse. I had went to the front desk where multiple people were complaining about rodent problems or it having leaks. I complained got switch to another room that looked worse. So I went back down stairs after waiting 30 minutes for a front desk person that never came back i asked for the manager. The manager was a kind gentleman and hooked me up with a renovated room where the doors and room were new. Which is located on the 14th floor. But this hotel needs a makeover and an exterminator. I shouldn't have had to change my room which I've never done before let alone twice .Too many people were saying they saw rodents in their room. For the money it was just not worth it. I do not in good conscience recommend it to any

We only stayed for three nights. The day we checked in our room wasn't ready. We had to wait an hour for our room to get clean and be ready. Starting with the pictures they have online. They must have gone to a different hotel to take them. When we got there the room was definitely from the pictures we saw online. We were disappointed in the room. The heat/ac is super old fashion. I don't believe it work. You had to turn the knob counter clockwise for the heat and clockwise for the ac. We turned it counter clock wise and left it on for 30-45mins and still no heat in our room. We got a standard room. The bathroom door has cracks on the door. The lighting in the room is horrible. They are two lights and two lamps. Overall the staff was very friendly. Good: Great location in Midtown opposite Madison Square Garden and near public transportation.

Bad: Rooms are very old with no ceiling lighting, dated fittings and minimal ventilation. Real estate agents would call this turn-of-the-century.

Ugly: Worst ever check-in/check-out experience. It took one hour (timed it) to check-in late at night on a weekday as there were only two staff on duty to process 12-15 people. 2) No heat late April though it was very cold outside and inside the room.
3) Amenities for disabled in their adopted room were broken and poor.
4) Water leaked to the room in the floor below when we took a bath.
5) They charge 5$ per luggage to be kept after check out.
6) The carpets must have not been cleaned this century.

Location was great, directly across from Madison Square Garden. Within walking distance to Times Square, Rockefellar center and Bryant park. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. My only complaint was the bathroom was small with no counter space. Other than that it was a great place to stay!

This place is absolutely terrible. They had hookers walking around barely wearing anything, and we had to wait two hours to check in because the kiosk wouldnt work. There is absolutely no space to walk around in those rooms. It smells moldy and disgusting. I for one will never be coming back here.

Pretty strict with the early check ins, no wiggle room apparently but they did hold our bags for us while we wondered around central park until the room was ready. Room wasn't bad but the walls were a bit thin we could hear the people in the next room. Location was great

All I can say is stay away from this place. The manager even admitted that this place should be closed down. Rodents, bugs, mold and mildew. I checked out with no other reservation. I was on the street with two kids but I was willing to take my chances. The worst hotel in the world. Nasty rooms, nice staff and lobby
