This place has a great atmosphere. BUT when the fire alarms go off at 4:50am, and the entire hotel is evacuated, it would be appropriate for anyone on the hotel staff to let the guests know what happened. Not expecting an apology, but some kind of explanation on the situation. Disappointed with the staff here..
Went to attend a wedding. The staff was very nice and friendly.
Definitely a great vibe and atmosphere. Great customer service and amenities. I highly recommend that you come and experience.
Want to feel like Hunter S Thompson or Johnny Depp? This is the spot. You can't help but feel awesome in this hotel.
Still have not received my deposit back! I been calling and can't get a call back to get it back. I would not recommend this hotel; looks can be deceiving.
The shower was fantastic, and the bed was comfy. The in room fridge was full of stuff for sale (making it hard to fit my morning caffeine), but I can't fault them too much for that.
The worst hospitality I've every encountered across the country. Eric was rude, nasty, and very argumentative. He tried to charge my card almost 800.00 dollars when my booking charge was 358.00. I finalized the 1 night stay just to have to go to another hotel for work and they still have pending transactions on my business account. They get a zero for the service and the room was small and the tub was dirty and not up to my standards. Eric or Derrick should be fired for his argumentative behavior bc the customer is always right.. I'm filing a BBB complaint bc their reputation is a lie based on Eric's behavior.
Nice, beautiful, kid people working, but for the price I would expect at least the water in the room to be free. Even in the slums of Asia they give you free bottled water at a cheap 5 dollar hotel. 200 a night and anything you touch you pay for. They don't even have a complimentary breakfast, in that fact no complimentary anything!
Location is convenient to the galleria, about a 2 block walk. The property was once a big brand, you can tell that they tried to rebrand and make trendy but some of the space feels odd. It feels dark and aged inside, needs a face-lift. The bar has a great selection of beers on tap. The rooms are what I'd expect to pay for the rate, nothing special though. There are a bunch of hidden fees at check in, a $15 a night fee for the gym, pool, Internet and $25 a night for self parking. While the property is nice I doubt id stay again
Cool and eclectic. We got a great deal on the room and the concierge upgraded us for free. Not much by way of views but for a one night stay very enjoyable exerience. Nice bar downstairs and interesting decor
The conference room would play unexpected background music in certain parts of the room during our business meeting.
I would not even give one star to this hotel .I do not have any words for this hotel. No proper service and the smell of marijuana throughout the hallway also neither a good description about the rate. They charge prices for various stuffs on your bill at the end before checking out. I would never visit this hotel in my entire life back again. Totally disappointing.
Very disappointing water leaked all night from the sink shower was terrible room not satisfactory at all weirdest point
AVOID AVOID! PREJUDICE HOTEL!
I sent an email enquiry for a group booking.
2 Days later I followed up the booking and was initially offered a contract booking but it was ADVISED and it was CONFIRMED by the hotel that I should go with a 'courtesy' hotel reservation instead
The reason for wanting to book HOTEL DEREK was because we were looking to hold a conference August 2018 and we were building a package for those travelling so they could begin to budget especially those from other countries.
We waited the 24 hours as stated by the hotel only to be told it wasn't ready (fair enough) however, this continued for a FURTHER 3 DAYS!!! With constant promises, it got to the weekend and I very much needed the code to pass onto our guests so I called the hotel for over 6 HOURS!! Trying to get something sorted Rahule the Ops Manager was kind enough to even call Stephanie who originally signed this off for which she decided not to respond to me. Later that evening I received an email from Aiesha who sold me the package say she would follow up on Monday.
As I'm sure you can image I wasn't please to say the least as the 1-3 days from the original request had ALREADY PAST! .... But I waited till Monday.
On Monday I spent ANOTHER 2 HOURS trying to speak to someone at the hotel to then finally receive a phone call from Stephanie who open with: " Hello and how are you today?" I replied, " I good but I could be better if we can get this code as I really do need it." I then received the following reply from Stephanie:
" Errr I'm sorry to have to tell you but we can no longer help you with your enquiry or booking, we are not going to be able to help you any further!"
I was shocked as you can imagine and I immediately said "Why?!" Stephanie's response was, " I have read your emails that you have sent to Aiesha and I don't think we can help your group.... and we are not taking bookings outside of 365 days. we can't help you any further...."
I was horrified that I had spent a good amount of time with this hotel, made an agreement which STEPHANIE signed off on and suddenly without explanation they wanted NOTHING to do with as Stephanie described 'Our Group'. I expressed to Stephanie that I wasn't sure what had suddenly changed that if Aiesha had sold something she shouldn't have that was an internal issue but an agreement was made and I accepted it. She continued to reply " We can't help your group anymore!"... I was angry and said the only thing that I could conceive was that she had picked up that we were a 'Foreign group, Christians with people of colour'(due to my name) and was this the real issue and they did not want us in the hotel? I said if this were the cause this was PREJUDICE!! ... Stephanie then said, " Err well if you want to stay you would have to pay a 25% deposit, if not we cannot help you any further you will have to go somewherelse." ( SHOCK SHOCK SHOCK).
I asked her to ask for Mark Noise the General Manager to call me. I waited OVER 12 HOURS!! With no callback NOBODY CALLED! I periodically called and I was advised I would have to go through a PROCESS TO GET TO MARK! I first had to speak to Rahule and he would pass a message onto Mark. For OVER 12 HOURS I kept getting messages that Rahule was in a meeting and he WAS aware and WOULD call me back.... NEVER RECEIVED A CALL BACK!
I genuinely believed that we lived in 2016 and this type of PREJUDICE had long gone with abolishen of the Jim Crow Law, but evidently it still alive and well. THINK TWICE if you are a:
GROUP
NOT FROM THE LOCAL AREA
A GROUP WHO HOLDS A FAITH
TRAVEL WITH PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD.
The sad part was that I also wanted to update them that we would have had over 300 guests, plus wanted to secure a Friday, Saturday and Sunday Conference at the hotel to help give them extra revenue so could we update the agreement, but I think in this instance Stephanie did me a favour but letting me know that really our 'Kind' of Group was NOT WELCOME HERE!
Great place to stay. Everything in the city is at the tip of your fingers. The area and the location makes it a " BIG TEXAS " stay. Plus they have a fast check in process with outstanding front desk service.
Very,Very professional staff, awesome service, comfortable beds, easy parking and less than 5 minutes from the galleria mall definitely a 5 star hotel.
I was staying for new year's and from the valet all the way to check out was an amazing experience. I had drinks at the bar which were made perfectly to my request.
Hotel Derek is a fancy place. BUT it does more in appearance than in functionality.
I was in the double queen room for 4 nights and the beds were actually full size. My feet hung off the end of the bed!
The bathroom has only 1 light on the side of the mirror so don't expect very good visibility inside the bathroom.
The TV is a LARGE flat screen. Very impressive.
Parking was $20 and added to your room incidentals card. Not cool.
Breakfast in the Valentino Bar is delicious but also expensive. $17 for breakfast. There was a ton of fresh fruit and hot items. It really was quite tasty, but $4.50 for orange juice? WOW.
Location is great. You are in the most accessible area for Galleria and freeway access. This is the third Galleria hotel I've stayed in, and I would still recommend this hotel but I would recommend you find this hotel on Orbits or Expedia or somewhere other than central reservations.
I love this place it's pretty it's elegant valet parking Nash Restaurant and Bar
Nice upbeat hotel. They kept those floors shining I would see them waxing every night. Didn't get to enjoy the pool because of the rain but it looked like it was a nice spot to relax.
Great hotel the only issue I had was that you are able to self park but the hotel charges you $20+ the catch is they are not liable for theft or damage etc. If you are going to charge parking the least you can do is be liable for the vehicle.
Overall I wouldn t say it s a 4-Diamond hotel the decorations in the rooms are definitely attractive (red couch, fun chandelier ball, bathroom sink) and the staff is kind. However, the actual frame work of the hotel is deteriorating(water damage to bathroom door frame and carpet is lifting, caulk on wall from remodel, discoloring of paint, damaged walls.) it s also pretty dirty when you get into looking at the room(bobby pins from previous guests, air vents full of dust, ceilings have dirt streaks on them) I also feel the designers didn t get into the mind of a guest when they brought this hotel together (towel racks located in shower and nothing by sink, really no complimetnary amenities available except a free cocktail.) I would be pleased with this hotel as a 3-star hotel but it didn t meet a 4 star rating for me.
I made a reservation and went all the way down there to find out my reservation didn t mean nothing. Their excuse was that it was a busy weekend if it was a busy weekend they should have never took my reservation Marriott has never done this to me so much for my first stay couldn t even stay and couldn t compensate me never staying here
The stay was good. The only reason I m rating it so low was because I left an item in my room, and just a few days after checking out they claimed to have lost it or not logged it in the inventory
Sketch.
Loved the ambiance. Free beer and wine at check in was a great touch to start off the night.
reasonably priced in a good location with a friendly staff. the garage in the parking lot was not working so getting in and out was a bit of an inconvenience but there was a golf cart that'd come by and scoop you up and also valet parking available.
Retro 70s funky style with interesting up sides but also annoying hidden extra costs. The end of the room has a huge 6 person couch and the TV can swing out to be viewed from it. (See photos) But $25 a DAY parking plus $40 for the privilege of a microwave and frig is a bit ridiculous. Also the entire hotel has but ONE handi-capped parking spot. Pool was nice but small. All in all a solid 3 star hotel that's trying really hard to be trendy.
If I was able to give zero stars I would. This was the worst hotel stay of my life. I mean, you couldn t pay ME to stay there again! Screwed up our reservations, gave us less beds than we had originally paid for and over charged us. Our entire floor smelled of marijuana and the rooms were just gross! Outdated and dirty! Both nights that we stayed, the persons in the surrounding rooms were having a party into all hours of the night. Very thin walls. So much more that I could complain about honestly, but I ll stop there. DON T stay here!
Terrible experience. Self serve is 27.00 but the problem the front desk requires a license plate number. Even though you can tell them make, model, color, location, and first 3 letters of license plate. Front desk said this is not good enough because your car will be booted starting at 9 pm. Then ate dinner at hotel restaurant and asked to out in a breakfast delivered to our room. The waiter said they could not do this and we must wait till in the morning
I visited my friend there. The parking for visitors is expensive.
Worst hotel ever seen. There is no single positive thing to write about. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Had to leave hotel at 11pm deciding staying home is more comfortable.
I've had much better stays at marginally cheaper hotels. Atmosphere is neat though and the pool was fun.
Fair at best. Pricey for a hotel that needs a major update. Staff very pleasant and eager to please.
THE STAY WAS COOL EVERYTHING WAS GREAT HAD SUTCH A FUN WEEKEND EXCEPT SUNDAY MORNING! THE BREAKFAST PANCAKES TASTED REALLY BAD! OTHER THAN THAT THE PEOPLE WERE SO GREAT AND WELCOMING LOVED IT.
Service is great, food,my room was excellent, staff professional. Outside the hotel, lots of construction, but it was still ok.
Love this place, rooms are great, staff is very friendly and attentive. I only dislike the prices of the minibar.
Loved it! Best date night! Very clean and on point!!
I purchased a voucher on living social for a stay at the hotel Derek in hopes of enjoying my anniversary weekend. There were so many issues encountered that made the stay not enjoyable. My first issue was the cleanliness. The entrance to the building from three parking garage had a strong smell of urine when we arrived. we noticed the room had not been cleaned well after the previous guest, it really looked like they made the bed and removed the trash but not much else. there were only a few clean towels (3 total: 1 big towel and 2 face towels) and half used toiletries (there was even the leftover half used bar of soap still on the sink).
My wife called the front desk to request fresh towels and toiletries and was told there is a CVS across the street if we need toiletries and towels would be on the way. The towels never came. We had reservations so we left and upon return there still was no towels. Being that it was late we decided to just call the desk again in the morning. We called at 7 am request towels again. They never came. Another call was placed away 10, they never came. Once again we called at 2 pm, they never came. Finally we called at 4 PM, no one came to clean the room and bring towels until 5 30 pm after my wife called again at 5. Our anniversary dinner was reserved for 645 pm and we needed to get ready but were told we needed to leave the room before they would clean or even give us towels to shower. Once we returned to get ready were noticed the towels requested we placed on three shower floor and were wet. Since we were in a rush to get to our dinner we used the wet towels and rushed out. Now upon our return to the hotel there was a guy just leaving our door and walking up to random doors with a card trying to get into rooms. At this point we were just ready to sleep and get out of there as soon as possible. We could not even do that, at 630 am the fire alarm begins to go off so we had to rush out of the building half dressed and half asleep worrying about our safety. Once it was over we could not sleep and were just ready to go. I went to make some coffee for a little energy while we packed our things. The coffee maker still had an old wet coffee pod from the previous guest inside it, so that was not an option. Even if it had been clean, there was no cream sugar or anything to add to coffee, just 3 decaf pods and some tea bags. This experience was really a continuous nightmare. I can say the only positive experience we had was at the bar. The bartender was friendly, nice and made some outstanding drinks for us. Other than that im not sure how this was supposed to be a 4 star hotel. This place has sanitary concerns, safety issues, poor customer service. We tried to make the best of it, but the entire stay was just a continuous mess. Im not sure I can even Express how disappointed I am with the entire stay. I was really intent on giving my wife a wonderful experience and this did not come close.
Financial I felt it was getting a great deal but reality was completely different.
Great location and view, nice stuff ,clean but the bath tub wasn't clean
After being to this hotel, I don't think I'd want to stay anywhere else in Houston! The hotel is super modern, hosts a complimentary happy hour AND has a pool to boot! The rooms are super plush and the hotel provides turn down service with chocolates on your pillow. The pool doesn't get a lot of sun, but it is very trendy. Room service will deliver anything you want out to the pool! Something to note, bar closes at midnight. There is also a slightly more expensive Starbucks downstairs. I didn't get to try it, but I heard the breakfast buffet is well known here. In close proximity to the Galleria Mall.
I used priceline the negotiator to get a hotel close to the Galleria in Houston. Boy was I disappointed when hotel Derek came up. This unknown hotel had mandatory valet and small rooms walking in was uninviting because there was club people and loud music. If u like small Asian style rooms and a club atmosphere go to club/hotel Derek. Maybe u will like it because I did not
Great rooms and friendly customer service. Breakfast was nice and convenient, would definitely stay again.
I attended a company party in one of their main rooms. The cocktail area is roomy and classy, and the event room has a beautiful modern design. A/V was excellent throughout the night. My only complain was the quality of the steak over dinner, it seemed rushed and almost fake. Overall it was a fantastic night.
The hotel is ran down. Also when I showered the drain was clogged. Water was up to my shin while showering. Asked for another room and was granted it. Guess what? Same thing drain clogged. Also watch out for bed frame. My leg is bruised from hitting the corner of multiple times. You know what? Just find somewhere else to stay
The hotel was nice however the valet service is why I gave it 1 star. They need customer service training.
first off I'll start by saying I put one star as I was forced to at least select one. otherwise, zeroooo stars. I have had the very worst experience of my life at this hotel. I wouldnt have stayed here if i had the time to search for something else. or the energy... as i drove over night on zero sleep.
when i arrived at the this hotel i was attacked not only once, but twice by a man in their "valet" parking garage. not to mention it was in front of my four year old son. after mentioning it to the staff, getting a supervision, speaking with security and a manager... they still didn't ensure my safety. as I return to the lobby i see the man and come to find out, it's their valet driver!
i express how uncomfortable i am with the man there etc... they still do nothing! three hours later i run into the man again. i call the hotel after I leave to figure out why he is still there and they say, oh he's leaving now... yeah right.
i return to the hotel to nearly be hit by speeding valet drivers in the lot. then I look up and see a man is wavering a GUN around in the hotel. i inform the front desk and still! no hurry to compensate and secure anyone's safety.
this place is awful. as I close this out I should also mention the faucets drip, the beds are awful, what's featured in the photos do not match up well, oh! and! a man had his truck broken into and robbed in the valet garage the morning I stayed.
Nice place cool rooms kind of a mid-century modern type feel the plumbing fixtures in the shower could use some work.
So I'm writting this review from my bed. I just got in, the lady short blonde woman treated me like garbage on the front desk. The installations are ok eve though they need an update on details but customer service definitely needs a complete redo
At the last minute I decided to book a room at Hotel Derek. Although they had issues pulling up my reservation when they finally got it situated they upgraded my room and put me on a higher floor. The room size was great for just me or even if I were with one other person. Super comfortable bed. My room was clean, but I was most impressed by the front desk staff.
Tried to book a room at govt rate. Front desk didnt know how, or even what it meant put me on hold, told me to go to the website. No direction on how to navigate site.
Beautiful hotel and friendly staff. Drinks at the bar are great and, surprisingly, the food is delicious. Parking, however, is way overpriced ($54 for two days).
I attended a conference, so cannot speak to the rooms. Nice hotel, clean lobby, good staff. Parking is a little tricky.
Decor is outdated and dirty from chairs. The room was gross, bathroom walls had weird stains and marks. Very cheap looking hotel for something labeled Upscale. Was extremely disappointed by the appearance of the hotel especially with high hopes. The only saving grace was the customer service. I would honestly rather stay at a Hilton. Honestly, would prefer it. I ve stayed at many hotels & pretty much 99% of them trump this one.
Probably the #3 hotel in Houston behind
#1 Hotel ZaZa
#2 Houstonian Hotel
Nice hotel, some outdated rooms though, but very nice decor and ambience
It was a good experience at least. The entrance is too small
It was ok. Trendy hotel. I prefer shower only in the bathrooms. Also trucks out back at 6am waking you up.
Great hotel, excellent location, reasonable rates for the quality of service. Staff is friendly, accommodating, etc. the gym is serviceable but could be slightly bigger.
