Construction and Chaos.
We planned this trip well in advance hoping to make it a new family tradition.
When we arrived, it was like an amusement park on its busiest day... shoulder to shoulder people. We walked through the crowds to check in. The clerk was friendly, and told us we were in a building "over there." She pointed in a direction that we started toward, and we soon realized we needed more specific directions. We asked a few employees, and they all said "just follow the path." (There were many paths.) It took over an hour in darkness through a construction site to find our building. We also found it difficult to find our room, due to a numbering system we weren't told about. We were starving and waited in line to sit and eat at a restaurant before we finally asked a waitress and she told us it's self seating. After a long wait and mediocre over priced food, we wandered in the dim light back to our room. This was the theme of our entire stay. Every restaurant had long lines of people and slow service. Even ice skating or the ice cream parlor was jam packed and impossible. The path to our hotel room was blocked off the next night with no explanation. When we asked, we were advised to walk along the boardwalk, a dark and windy route, to our building. Everything went wrong... the tv didn't work, the exit at the parking garage didn't work, our sink leaked, a fire drill woke us several times, and there was loud construction starting at 6am.
This hotel was too crowded and the staff snd facilities were unable to accommodate everyone. I heard other people complaining while I waited to check out, and realized I was not alone with my displeasure.
If you are planning to visit this hotel around Christmas, be prepared for crowds and chaos.
By far the worst experience ever. First night here was a band playing music below our room so loud no one in my family could sleep. Second the walls are paper thin so we could hear everything our neighbors were doing. And if you have children it s definitely not something you want them hearing. Third night we got to wake up at 7am sharp by roof repair directly above us this lasted for over two hours until we had to leave the room. So loud it was vibrating our room. Called the front desk to just get excuses. So that along with no water early morning on the day we checked out (no showers, going to bathroom, or brushing our teeth), our key cards not working 3 night, our remote not working, the bathroom tub not holding water, oh and not getting the confirmed items we asked for when booking. I would STRONGLY not recommend this hotel. Horrible!
I worked there for 2weeks is okay. The only thing I like about it is that there's beautiful women that work there
Unbeatable views at an historic and well cared for venue, always an excellent experience to visit the "Hotel Del"
Location great. Historic Hotel with much beauty and character. Hotel employee service NOT up to what was expected from this type of a hotel.
Heritage hotel, old-fashioned style, excellent location on the beach, nice sitting and restaurants area on the beach
Great hotel with good views and a nice beach, but the service was not good. We stayed for 3 nights and only got our room cleaned once which was at 10:30pm. In addition to this, the front desk was not helpful and I had to wait 45 minutes to check into a room that wasn t ready.
Great beach to walk on and for getting on the water.
Just visiting, had to leave to find good food options. Beautiful though. Right by a great beach with some great plants, not to mention the old architecture.
Wonderful fun place to relax by the beach and eat yummy food.
I'm so very sorry to write this review. I am a well-seasoned Canadian traveler and very much was looking forward to my stay here. Positives: the hotel grounds are impressive, well-manicured and beautiful
Con: oh my, where to start. First off: the hotel is located near a naval base (sorry if this is incorrect I am not 100% familiar with the particulars of the US army) and helicopters fly over every 10-15 minutes causing a very loud noise. Obviously this is NOT the hotels fault, but something to be aware of. Second: our check-in time was between 2pm and 4pm and sadly our room wasn't ready until 4pm despite the fact that we had called earlier to say we would be arriving around noon. I realize as well, this may be the fault of the previous guests, but noted regardless. Our room was on the "first floor" and about 10 ft away from the main walkway in the area. People would stare at us on our deck and we would wave back. If you are comfortable with this, it is not necessarily a con. We are shy Canadians so this was quite awkward and really took away from the gorgeous view. Our room didn't have a corkscrew, strange for a 5-star hotel, nor wine glasses, or kettle. Also our room was directly located underneath the main restaurant and the children were playing, well, 3 ft from our room. Again, not the hotels fault but really took away from the experience. We dined at the patio grill of the hotel and paid $60.00 for a sandwich, a salad and a margarita which is almost a crime considering the margarita came in a plastic cup. We should have done our research beforehand, but I'm sorry, I really don't care how fancy a restaurant is, this is simply poor value.
To continue, the entire hotel is a maze and has very poor signage which means you may wander around a little bit. If this doesn't bother you, again its not a con, but something to note. We were extremely frustrated trying to find our room, but made it eventually.
The town is beautiful, but I have to give this a very poor star rating because for $600.00 a night CAD, I expect WAY more. At home in a Fairmont resort we would have an incredible room, large bathroom, gorgeous view, complimentary food and beverages as well as early check-in, comp upgrades etc. We have stayed at many many hotels internationally, in Mexico and US, as well as abroad and sadly felt this one did not provide value or good experience for the price. I would not recommend this hotel and am glad we are only staying 1 night.
This deserves to be a 5 star hotel. I ve made so many memories here and I espically love the s mores on the beach. The exquisite view puts the hotel over the top along with the beautiful view of the sunset. Also the cabana room are the best hotel rooms in the world. I m addition, the shower is incredible on your back and they have such great personal care in the shower that have an amazing scent that you can but at the gift shop. My brother and I especially love the new cafe that they just opened. We love the beautiful environment and food. Overall it s the best place to stay and be.
Love the Donahue family
The Del is by far the best hotel I've ever stayed at. The service is kind, and generous. My wife and I mentioned that we were on our honeymoon and they upgraded us for free to an ocean view bedroom. The view was incredible. We loved exploring the 28 Acres of land the del is built on. Including shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment. The best part of our experience was at the 1500 Club (restaurant) where our waiter John did a marvelous job pairing wines to a 3 course meal. Everything was delicious. I can't wait to return to the Del, best experience in San Diego!
Pretty Victorian hotel with rich historical background
We had such a great time on the day beds on the beach. The whole staff was incredibly accommodating, especially our host Corey!
Very pretty location and elaborate hotel/shop. I didn't stay, just visited but it was nice to see it.
Great location and beautiful architecture. Worth experiencing once. Old building and it shows. Slow elevators, limited WiFi, in need of some updates. Nice friendly staff.
Very well maintained, very charming, very overpriced, very busy. Location is everything - both in good ways and bad. In the Towers, avoid rooms on the lower 3 floors. The rooms are fine, but you have high odds of bad or obstructed views. If you're price or quality conscious, choose nearby restaurants and bars over the hotel. Picture below shows view from 2nd floor north facing. For transportation... 25 minute walk to Ferry to Midway. Or a constant stream of Ubers. I wouldn't bother with a rental car unless you are planning ongoing fast afield.
The hotel is beautiful and clean, but bathrooms seem to be scarce without a line and the employees seem harried to attend all their duties (pleasant and polite, but brisk and quick to move on, feels a little like being on a manufacturing line). Not that I blame them, they do a LOT, but is an observation.
Great historic hotel
Safety is 5*
Amazing views.
And great place to swim &look for treasures
Totally under construction. The under ground parking cost $30. For 2 hours!!!
Didn't stayed there, but I did visited this Hotel once and it is very nice, has lots of story behind it and a beautiful spot in Coronado "island" just in front of the Marina and near the beach. It also has some stores within the area and it is next to the main avenue. you can take a walk around and find many local stores with great food and items.
Quaint, scenic even iconic. Grossly overpriced. Indistinguishable from other Resort-style hotels, strings of shops full of things you don't need at prices you don't want to pay. We skipped Brunch at $100/head - clearly designed to keep the riff-raff out. This isn't like it's Barcelona or San Sebastian. I cannnot sanction this sort of money wasting.
Wow this hotel has so much history. So beautiful. Just stunning.
In short, this place is ancient and while it s nice in places, it also looks run down in other places, but since it s historic they can get away with it.
They ll also charge you $600+ per night for their lowest crappiest room, while treating you like dirt while you wait hours for your room.
You don t have diamond status? Good luck.
And enjoy paying the $50 per day parking, $30 resort fee, a sandwich costs $20. Oh and most lawns are sectioned off for private parties.
What a waste of money.
Beautiful, important, lovingly maintained this hotel is truly one of a kind...
Positioned on the pristine Coronado beach, it's celebrating its 130 years. If this is how legacy looks like, many would definitely want to be part of it, me included.
Wish there could be proper sand shower stations as is the norm in other renowned beaches. Would hate to see sand piled on wooden planks, though had to admit despite this glitch, everything was looking quite dazzling.
Historic, beautiful, nice beach, great food at the bar area, drinks!!! Our go to place in San Diego!!!
Such a beautiful hotel and beautiful scenery. Of course everything there is three times as expensive so plan for that, overall a great experience.
Such a gorgeous hotel ! Delicious food and snacks too :)
Nice place very historic we did not stay there but visited would consider it next time we are in San Diego ! Many in house restaurants & shops to choose from, well maintained, nice beach, nice walkways
We just walked through and got ice cream at moo creamery but it was stunning. Very rich in history as well as classy and elegant.
This is where we always took our out of town guests and were never disappointed. WE went to the Sunday Buffet just ourselves many times. One thing know one mentioned in the comments is the Ghost
that walks the hall that goes out to the beach. She never lets us down.
Always enjoy stopping by Hotel Del Coronado. An icon in San Diego and very beautiful at night. I love the shops and the view of the ocean. The beach walk is always a must. You get to walk by these fabulous Cabanas and check out the lucky few who get to stay there. My favorite hotel on the West Coast and now it is a Hilton property so you can add to your points.
Venue was wonderful and the meetig room very beautiful. They could have provided more service for faster food delivery. But this is a definetly hotel to see. Lots of small shops and restaurants. Hotel right on the beach with beautiful walkway and front yard.
Always pleasant to go to, but now they charge 20 bucks to park even if your handicapped.
Overall service should be better for a hotel this class and price range.
I did not stay at the hotel, but I was visiting from Minnesota and really wanted to see it. The hotel from the outside looks absolutely gorgeous. It has a great pool with an awesome view of the ocean. The beach right outside of the hotel is also one of the best beaches I have seen. It wasn't too crowded, had really soft sand, and had a rental service for a lot of things like surf boards, bikes, swinsuits, boby board, etc. Overall the hotel is really beautiful and is a cool place to visit even if you don't stay at the hotel.
A must see while in San diego. Ideally located on conorado Island. Beach facing facility has lot of things to do and great dining options.
We stayed at the hotel Del numerous times and every time it has been magnificent. The staff here are some of the best you ll find anywhere. Friendly knowledgeable and always willing to help. Our kids love going to the Del and playing on the beach and swimming in the pool s. Everything has always been top notch and super clean.
They charge $200 if you want to sit and watch the ice skaters. The place is a total rip off. Don't waste your time or money. Christmas greed is all they are in to.
It is a very nice hotel! We like to walk around in the little shops when we visit Coronado. It is right next to the beach also! :)
Disappointing for $800, the bathroom was small. The view was not the full ocean view we were up charged for. Me and my family were also met with a lot of skepticism by the staff, we don't come from money, but we paid didn't we? Overall very disappointed, and expected more for $800.
1st class views. Absolutely nothing to complain about.
This is one of the most famous landmarks in San Diego. Enjoy the history and the greatness of this amazing hotel.
One of the most beautiful hotels in San Diego if not the entire country. Wonderful restaurants and amenities with beautiful views as well.
Historical and cultural one of the best getaways in san diego
Great place for a walk. Tends to get a bit crowded, yet pleasant enough for a nice walk.
Beautiful place to walk, see the historic buildings. Ice skating during Christmas time! Love the views of the beach. Very open feeling, clean air.
Hotel del is always an amazing experience if you haven't visited make sure you add it to your list of things to do while in San Diego
Bar and restaurant is very nice but very very expensive. Opted for a $15 sandwich at the nearby bakery instead of the $28 burger at the bar.
Amazing and historic beachfront hotel with more than its share of character. My only issue is the beds. The mattresses are as hard as boards. It's literally like laying on the floor. I had to lay on extra pillows to keep my shoulders and hips from hurting (side sleeper). It was really interesting to see the Navy training on the beach. Puts everything in perspective.
Nice old historic place to vicit. But to crowdy, small botique and shops over priced
We just walked around and sat on the grass to catch some sun. Beautiful grounds.
I took a picture of it. It was beautiful. I always love seeing it.
Wow!!! It is amazing place. Love to visit every time when I can. Love the building, the architecture, the atmosphere and the beach access. Must to visit, no regrets.
Hotel was very nice. I was there for a work conference. Nice experience overall. Food at the restaurant was a bit pricey for what you got, but the service was awesome. Beautiful beach and surroundings!
West Coast old world charm and history. The place to stay in San Diego.
Walked around the outside and the lobby. Looked very nice while we did a Pokemon raid nearby later on.
Spectacular views and an old world charm! Great cocktails and appetizers at the sun deck. Friendly staff! We really enjoyed our visit here!
One of my favorite places to visit in San Diego even though ive lived there my whole life. It's so beautiful.
A true classic. Excellent service, and the property is wonderful for sitting out at night and having a drink.
The cafe workers are very amiable, and the place has a great positive vibe.
Another must see if your going to Coronado Island. A very beautiful and very old hotel with lots of history and charm.
The hotel is simply stunning. I love the vintage vibe that you get when you walk through the doors of the Hotel Del. One my favorite things to do is to come and sit at the bar and listen to the great live music. Full of history and glamour, the Hotel Del is a San Diego staple. Parking can be expensive, but if you arrive early enough you might get lucky and nab a spot on the street.
Disneyland for adults and a childhood memory creator for the kids. Amazing Place being taken back in time when you stay here.
This is a very nice hotel. It is an older hotel but very well maintained. My room was near the beach. It was a joy watching the sunrise and set. The are plenty of shops and food places on the grounds if you do not want to venture out for food. The staff here was very nice. I stayed here for a conference and the conference food supplied by the hotel was good as well.
The place is gorgeous and you are treated like a v.I.p.
Stayed in Ocean Towers 1st floor facing ocean with a beautiful patio. Technically not an ocean view but we didn t pay for one so we were totally pleased with the large space with tall shrubs separating patio from beach walkway. Still could hear sound of waves from patio. Bonfire and s more experience was wonderful. Staff very attentive and quick to remedy any issues. Overall, an excellent experience.
We loved our stay there. The facilities are gorgeous, the staff couldn t be more helpful, and we enjoyed sitting on the deck with our favorite beverage and reading our books. What peace.
Have you ever been in a situation where you ve booked a room, paid for it in full, traveled for hours to your destination & were told there are no rooms available while checking in? This is what we faced as a family of two on vacation. Most unprofessional & beyond inconsiderate!! Instead of rectifying the situation with utmost satisfaction, the reception desk manager simply told us there was a miscommunication with bookings & referred us to a 3 star motel-like hotel. Disgusted by the entire situation, but mostly by the manager s indifference & careless attitude.
Fantastic beach and coastal area to spend the day. Rentals are reasonably priced and the beach is not over crowded.
Outstanding Staff, comfy bed, and big room for cheap price
Beautiful hotel, beautiful views, friendly and knowledgeable staff but really expensive coffee and snacks
4* because expensive. Other than that, it's amazing. If you don't stay there, it's at least a must visit while in San Diego.
Very nice resort. Main house is old, so i assume that's why the lobby is a little musty. I stayed in the Ocean Tower which was very clean, very nice. Food here was good, although I only dined in room and at large meeting functions.
Breathtaking in size, beautifully kept up, right on the beach, and it has lots of awesome history. I recommend a visit here even if you don't stay.
Absolutely lovely hotel right in the beach front. We had a work event here and the location is too notch.
I enjoyed the hotel very much. The staff was friendly and very accommodating.
Nice gift shop. Souvenirs a little on the pricey side. T-shirts for $28. Great staff and beautiful hotel.
Classic hotel, rooms are old and dated but the lobby is gorgeous and the outdoor bars and dining areas are awesome.
Iconic hotel in San Diego. It can get crowded during tourist season. The beach is wonderful. Worth the visit. The other side of Coronado has the best views of the San Diego skyline.
Beautiful historical hotel!:-) Nice beach! And so many bar, ristorants, shops!
This is a beautiful place! Historical, kept up, lovely details. Can't say enough about how gorgeous it is. My only reason for a 4 star instead of 5 is the inability to see the majority of the hotel. You are free to visit the shops, restaurants, bars and truly beautiful beach, but see very little of the actual hotel it's self. None the less do not miss seeing this wonderful jewel.
I really love the hotel: nothing can beat this location and views. The staff was uniformly attentive and excellent. There is enough to do and see on the grounds that you shouldn't have to leave. That said, we were surprised at the mediocrity of all the food we ate on site. I would recommend walking off-site for food, there are many places off of Orange street that are excellent. It's not just that the resort food had resort prices, it's that it was not as good as I expected, especially considering the price.
