Big, busy hostel with a positive, social vibe. The beds are comfortable enough, and the restrooms are kept pretty clean. My dorm room had a sanitation issue that wasn't addressed for several hours; but to be fair, I didn't bring the issue to the attention of the staff, assuming it was already noticed in a "clean" room. I was disappointed that NO breakfast was included, when most (all?) other HI hostels include at least simple breakfast foods.

Great First hostel experience;

Great First hostel experience;
The location is A+. Adding to what people mentioned, is just 3 blocks away from the M60 bus stop which takes you directly to LGA airport for 3$ in about 45 minutes. The activities they have daily are great to discover a lot of places for first timers in Nyc. The little cafeteria offers a lot of different options for breakfast or lunch. (I loved their coffee).
Bathrooms are bright and clean(they will also give you flip flops to use in the showers, if you ask)Beds are comfortable. Elevator takes forever (is understandable for and old building). Still they have everything well painted and decorated.

About staff..
They have a lot of great people doing their best and thats what I chose to remember. I will definitely recommend this place.

-But I also want to offer some constructive feedback-
I experienced three different situations that made me feel quite uncomfortable; the first one was two front desk agents not being polite (like if they didn t want to be there). The second, one of the custodians talking about how nasty guys are in the bathrooms.(in Spanish, my first language). And the third, some of the people who clean the rooms didn t even say hi , excuse me or good morning .

I work in the hospitality industry as well, so I Completely understand how upsetting it could be. But as professionals we have to deal with all the different situations and learn how or when to talk about it if necessary. Theres not a bigger pleasure than to serve and enjoy what we do.

I attended a social event at their Ballroom location. The staff were extremely accommodating of my grandmother who had accessibility issues and made sure that we got to the venue we needed to be without any hassle. Thanks!

First time in a hostel. I read the reviews of all the locals and HI new york had the best reviews and for good reasons.

Hotel staff was awesome, building was creative and really cool. They had everything I could ever need. Located close to the subway.

Seriously don't go anywhere else.

I liked the place itself, nice lounge & chill out spots, bathrooms, kitchens and rooms are clean. The guest there though are very stand offish and constantly staring at their phone; in other words, the general social atmosphere is weak. NYC is huge, with lots to do so it's kind of mute point, just would have been nice to meet more travelers.

Excellent hostel! Spacious and comfortable rooms, everything very clean. Many activities are organized that allow to know the city from a local perspective and at very good prices. Very good place to socialize with people from all over the world. While it is not close to the main attractions of NY, is a couple of blocks from subway stations of 3 different lines and is reached in 20-30 minutes to Times Square.

Very large hostel. Everything is organized and clean. There is a full dining room. Large rooms. Cool place. Not far from Central Park. At New York rates, the hostel is not expensive. I recommend.

My stay at HI Hostel has been great, I ve booked a bed in female premium dorm and was quite satisfied with the privacy for which it allowed. Another pleasant surprise were the breakfasts, which were great and can be tailored to any taste. They also have a lot of extra experiences such as comedy nights and tours offered everyday, there is even yoga every morning at 8. Overall, very clean property with great staff. Recommend staying here as it s great value for money.

+ Great location in a historic building, close to Central Park, big room, kind of budget friendly, good breakfast, very close to the number 1 subway and just 20 minutes to Times Square, helpful staff, restroom is beyond my expectation - very clean and equipped with showering system, overall it was a nice experience.
- The ventilation machine/AC is too loud, mattress was uncomfortable (is was a bit old), checkin took an hour and my room was not ready at 5 pm even the checkin is at 4 pm.

You can meet various people, and the cafe on the first floor is open until late and it is delicious (it can be eaten for around $ 5-7). The hostel's original events (welcome party etc.) will also be held, so if you move independently you will become more and more friendly with people!

The Hostel is well organized and clean. The people who work there are well educated and I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. However I had problems with regard to orders that were refused receipt without an informed reason.

I ve stayed in several others hostels in Manhattan and I think this is absolutely the best. Excellent location. Subway line 1 is just one block away, 2 min walk. You can get to the Times Square in around 25 minutes. Many nice restaurants and a fruit shop nearby. They also have many activities including cooking lessons, although I wonder who come to New York City to spend 5 hours on how to make cookies. But they also have tours and bar crawls.
10 people or 12 people rooms may be stuffen in the evenings but that is unavoidable. 4 or 6 people rooms are excellent because they have curtains around the beds.
They have a cafe which is quite convenient. The food there are all huge in quantity so you are guaranteed for a full stomach.
I found that bathrooms on the first floor are cleaner than those on the other floors.

Very busy place with lots of people coming and going. Friendly staff, overall clean, but the rooms are super tiny is all. No chairs, nor desks to put anything on in the rooms, at least there are lockers. Overall you can't beat the price and location.

I was VERY pleased with the help I received after forgetting my jacket in my room after I left to go work in Norwalk, CT. Not only was my jacket found in my room after I contacted them, but they even packaged it for me so I could have a shipping company come pick it up, and the next day I had my jacket.

Thanks again everybody for the help!

The staff were super lovely and helpful, the welcome bbq was also a nice touch to get to interact with other hostel members. The location was also great, Central Park less than 10 minutes away, several metro stations and a nice shopping street with lots of food places just a block away. I personally didnt but there were also many activities you could sign up for with local guides showing you around or pub crawls, sometimes these had a slight cost but they were always very popular.

Out of all the hostels I stayed during my trip across America, this was my least favourite. There was no breakfast and you had to pay to leave bags after you checked out (unlike both Chicago & San Francisco HI). The lady who was also checking me out was very rude about the baggage storage/payment. The beds were also fairly uncomfortable and squeaked a lot. Other than that, it was a decent stay.

Nice rooms well insulated, but the heater kept playing up and we had to get someone to come fix it each night, they were quick about it though. Good layout in communal areas and a lot of interesting activities to sign up for.
A dry bench with mirror and electrical sockets in bathrooms would be a good idea, as girls taking up the sink space is a little awkward.l when you just want to wash your hands or brush teeth.

Went here on a school trip, stayed for a week and it was the loveliest place. The people were not only nice, but kind and caring. They would ask with genuine interest where I'd been all day when I got back from whatever the school had arranged that day and we would chat about nothing and everything. I genuinely miss those guys and this place

Probably the worst hostel I've stayed in. Really weird smell throughout the building, like feet mixed with dust?! There's an extra charge per night when you arrive that's not mentioned when booking. Beds very uncomfortable with terrible air-con. Not really much of a social presence, no bar or anything. The extra star is for the great food and coffee at the on-site cafe.

It has been one of the best hostels I've been to, huge, clean, friendly staff, and with many amenities. Do not get carried away by the location, it is really worth it, and if you did not wear your sandals, they sell you there for 1 dollar. Also nearby there is a jazz club and across the street, some delicious Mexican pizzas !!
I highly recommend a walking tour of NY, which is free and is guided by a man. It was magnificent and unmatched!

Our family loved staying here on two occasions. Affordable and modern and spacious family room, walking distance to Central Pk, subway, shops. Fantastic listed building that's been funkily renovated while retaining its old world charm. Friendly and accommodating staff with great food available at their kiosk. Definitely returning next time we're in NYC.

I was indebted to my poor days. When I traveled to NYC, I tried staying in New Jersey and trying to go to the bus, but I learned that there is something that can not be substituted for the convenience of location, whether it is a dormitory or shared bathroom.

I came here basically for the less expensive tours and activities they organise. It was good, fun filled and inexpensive. TBH, I would strongly recommend this hostel especially great if you're traveling alone, as I was. Great price, good range of useful facilities (including laundry room and kitchen), clean, and in a safe and accessible location. The staff is very friendly, bathrooms are big and has enough baths and toilets. They have a lot of interesting events and the WiFi worked perfectly. I'll visit again soon.

I think it is one of the best in New York and Manhattan that is tough for the budget traveler.
The rooms are spacious and clean compared to common dorms.
I think that there are no common kitchen facilities and equipment and you have no trouble with self-cooking.
The shower and toilet did not feel uncomfortable.
The staff will respond like this, and should not expect something like a typical hotel, as do all the facilities.

I think that there were a lot of "Japanese accommodation" about 30 to 50 dollars a night until a few years ago, but it seems to have been an outlaw and it has almost disappeared in recent years.

In Manhattan, it's not difficult to find a hotel that is clean enough for an average Japanese person to spend for less than $ 200 a night, or if you're traveling with two or three people, you have a choice.

We use several times in around 10 years, but the price is rising year by year, it depends on the exchange, but I am worried that it will exceed 10,000 yen in the near future.

This is the best hostel I've ever stayed at, and I've been at a lot of hostels. Tons of shower stalls. Has hair dryers on the walls. Rooms are clean and modern, complete with plugs at your bed. You even get a towel; I shouldn't have brought my own. Do bring shampoo and conditioner. Otherwise, the dorm felt like a communal hotel!
