I've stayed at this Hostel many times now, and my most recent 6 night stay was bloody brilliant. The staff are always helpful and smiling, the food in the cafe area is fantastic (no need to eat out) and the dormitories nice and clean (apart from other students leaving their stuff in the middle of the floor).
I for one will always use this Hostel whenever i have the pleasure of visiting New York.

I was on a tour of the entire East coast and this was the worst hostel of all the places and the most expensive one as well. Heater was broken and the temperature dropped down to -8 C. Management couldn't care less. I told them for 3days and the problem wasn't solved .

Great value for money and a nice walk thought Central Park each morning into the city

Massive hostel. Helpful staff. Free tours and evenrs. Beds have curtains for privacy. Close to metro.

Facilities are good overall but my room is quite stuffy, since there is no way to open the windows.

Really nice rooms, close to subway stations, security is alright. However, the slow elevator is frequently occupied, so if your room is in the 3rd floor have fun running up and down the stairs every time!

A pretty good hostel in New York. There is a subway station close by, less than 5 mins walk. The locations good enough. There is a Starbucks close the subway station. The staff are very friendly, and they offer a good service. The rooms are clean enough and its affordable option for New York.

Was there with my language travel group, and there you feel really good. The atmosphere is pleasant and cozy, you can meet a lot of people there and the beds are also very comfortable. Everything was very clean, the 5 star has earned.

Could be better. Free tours of Central Park. Slow elevator. Needs improvement!

Update: Returned this Spring, same old Hostel. Problems are, super slow elevator. Desperately need upgrade to elevator service. Suggest adding another elevator. Current elevator is a "service" elevator as well as a "passenger" elevator. Many times one must share elevator with huge baskets of bedding, towels, etc. And elevator is slow! Stairs are not convenient to Central Hostel area.
This is not a great Hostel, but it is good. Met many nice folks here. Definitely worth a try!

The place is very near to central park. There are cheap eating places right outside the hostels. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and the staff are very friendly. It is not the same as the HI in Boston though. The vibe here was different but still, it's a great place!

Excellent location. And the attention of those at the reception is very nice. I had a problem with my reservation and a hotel reservation platform that I use and those of the hotel, they communicated with the platform and they solved it. I was going to pay double if they didn't help me.

It's a friendly place, well located, near to a Subway station, the rooms and the restrooms are clean. The staff is very kind and willing to help you in whatever you need and the price is affordable

Stayed in a multi bunk male dorm style room. Very reasonable for the price. Bring a lock to keep your belongings in the locker provided. Bathrooms are shared on a by floor basis. If you just need a place to crash at the end of the day this is a great option in the city. Location is great and staff are friendly.

Amazing hostel! I stayed 7 days in NYC and that place had become a sort of home. The building has plenty of space inside and outside. Perfectly organized with the kitchen and the bathrooms. Also at least 3 or 4 more common areas. Including a pool table room and a cinema room with the big TV and all couches. They organize a lot of events which I haven't been part of unfortunately. Everything is new and perfectly clean. They provide you with a bath towel and there's no time limit on the showers (although it would be nice not to waste water).
Very nice garden which I couldn't enjoy as it was winter and snowing but I've seen a BBQ other than all the picnic tables.
Inside there's a cafeteria that makes AMAZING pastries. Muffins, cinnamon swirl, cupcakes, pancakes, you name it.. And a lot of more not expensive stuff for lunch you can pack for your exploring journeys. Health choices and less health choices.
If I have to find a flaw that's the beds, mattresses and pillows not a great quality (although according to my fitbit I ain't slept that good in a long time), and the breakfast not included. Not because of the breakfast itself but because it's a moment for the guests to socialize. Without a specific time for them to be altogether in the same place people tend to spread up. And so it becomes harder to know new people, which is what I love the most about hostels.
Besides that, highly recommended. Few minutes from the subway, few more minutes from another line, and I guess less than 10 from Central Park.

The lobby can be quite noisy, but when you climb to the floors to get to your room everything is very tidy and quiet. The staff felt stressed out but still very friendly and managed to get us a room even when there was some mix-up in the files.

It's a good hostel cheap for New York. Really close to the metro and central park. I stayed in female dorm room for privacy reasons and was perfect for me. Locks in the room you can bring your own or buy from the front desk. Breakfast was Included in my stay good variety of choices. The bathroom was clean also have laundry room to wash, dry and iron your stuff.

At 3 in the morning, they were efficient and helpful. I was very pleased

I don't have too much experience with hostels, but this one was great. Only bad thing that happened to me is on check out day, I went to bathroom early in the morning while I was packing and when I wanted to enter back in room, my key didn't work (probably because of check out day, but anyway, if checkout is like on 10am, I have right to use my room till that time). So I was left in hallway in my pajamas...

Nice hostel, clean rooms. Very young guests, some of them came to the room during the night (3-4 am) waking up the entire room.

Great hostel in the middle of the upper west side, just a few blocks from central park. It was super clean, the staff was friendly and helpful, and it was incredibly reasonable in price for the area. Definitely stay here!

Uncomfortable beds. Rooms were vaguely clean. Showers were the best part but you can't sleep in them.

Not too bad for a hostel. The internet speed wasn't great but that's to be expected with the number of people staying there. It is a short walk from the subway and there are plenty of food places nearby, including Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Papa John's, and many others. It has an ATM in it (but I wouldn't recommend using it if you are able to use a bank's one for a smaller fee). There is a room with a few dozen chargers so you can charge your phone/laptop. The hostel also has its one reasonably priced cafe but you can also have an breakfast buffet which has hot food, cereal, fruit, and hot and cold drinks. There is a nice outside area at the back with a few tables and lighting. The bathrooms had a few showers with a body wash/shampoo dispenser so you won't need to bring your own if you don't want to. There is normally a line for the showers/toilets in the morning and at night. The washing machines and dryers only cost a few quarters to use. There was also a few vending machines downstairs which had food and drinks.

The only problem I had with this place is the front desk service. It was often slow and the people didn't seem overly friendly. The window in my room wouldn't open and the air conditioning stopped working but no one did anything about it after asking for assistance. It wasn't until the cleaner came into our room that he managed to open our window.

Overall, the place was great. My only problems came down to a few unhelpful employees, but everything else was good.

Best Hostel in the world. The quality makes the highest price worth.

Great first experience. So cozy, respectful society. Everything you might need they got it; a garden, cafe, business room, reading room,etc.

Brilliant hostel, huge range of facilities including a TV room. Staff are really friendly and knowledgeable.

There's also plenty of social events too

The most important about that place is location! There's a subway one block down. Nice and clean. They have lockers for 5$ night. There's a patio and garden. Some rooms come with free breakfast. Staff is nice.

I've been staying at HI New York City Hostel for two nights. I was very well taken care of by the staffs and I really liked the security and cleanliness of the place. The breakfast was very tasty and made me woke up early every day. My only criticism is about the installations of the hostel. The bed was a little bit uncomfortable and the air conditioning system of the room was irritatingly loudly (hotel room: 431). My conclusion is, in general, was an excellent experience and for sure I recommend this Hostel for your staying in New York

Great hostel, not to expensive and located right next to central park. The subway station is also around the corner, so the location is great.

The hostel itself is clean and the staff is friendly. There are big lockers for your luggage available; and small lockers in the rooms. The breakfast that you can get here is also decent.

I definitely recommend this place.

I loved. Excellent rooms, bathrooms and sanitary facilities, warm atmosphere and entertainment alternatives inside and outside their facilities, organize several guided tours to different sites of interest on a regular basis at various times. Located in Manhattan near subway stations and bus stops which facilitates travel to different parts of the city.

It was an excellent experience. I recommend that you stay at this place.

Great value. Easy access to transit. Decent staff and helpful. Clean. Entertaining. Only complaint is staying with 8 other guys in a room is stinky. Lol

I used HI from all over the United States, but the facilities are the best. Quadruple rooms have USB and power taps in bed and locker respectively. There are many showers and there is also a cafe, so it's convenient.

It is a hostel from another world. Total luxury and excellent service.

Love this place, stay everytime I'm in the city. Always clean, staff is great. The building and facilities offered are better than some hotels.

I give this place 4 stars because, it is a fashionable and fun place to stay. However, the bathrooms are not very clean. The staff are a bit reluctant to respond. They organize stand-up comedy which is very cool.

It is written that breakfast is included but it is not included. There is a cafe in front of the reception.
After checkout, you can leave your luggage in the basement locker for $ 5 on the day. Credit card compatible Japanese also available.

Really nice installations and workers. They dont have a casual backpacker vibe that is sometimes nice, but they make up for it with the activities they organize constantly

This place was great! I went here on a trip and had no clue what a hostel was but was pleasantly surprised! Had the atmosphere of a fancier, better version of a college dorm. Everything was clean and the people were nice. Would come again.

Great hostel. facilities are great. cafe is great. kitchen is AMAZING.

Only issue is expensive luggage holding. And additional charges per nights if you aren't part of Hostels International (that aren't always clear before booking depending on how you book)

So I'll preface this with the fact that I've never stayed in a hostel before anywhere. It was a great experience, even with the annoying things that happened. (Someone else took my bunk and then they ended up forgetting to change the sheets.) It's in a great location, very affordable, and the staff are excellent. There was never an issue of not having a shower available or anything like that.

Stayed here last fall. Good place. Lots of rooms. As it IS in NYC it is REALLY busy all hours of the night. Bring earplugs to catch some sleep. Good part of town, not SOHO or Chelsea but not unsafe in anyway. Great connections via bus or subway to all points in the city. Prices werent cheap, but hey, this place is worth it in my opinion. I would definately stay here again.

Staff are very friendly. Bedrooms are shared much like having roommates in college or university. Bathrooms seem new and very clean.

The location is fine, the rooms are fine but my wall plug does not work, excellent service.

Very accessible and can host lots of people. Can be used when organising events including children and even adults. Has lots of facilities.

I stayed in hotel last year in March but this year I'm staying in the hostel. Its amazing! Fast WiFi, clean bathrooms, spacious common rooms and many more. I'll definitely visit this place again. It has accommodated us a team of over 70 delegates! Awesome.

It is a very good and well structured hostel, the only shortcoming is the mattresses, which are not comfortable at all. Otherwise it is a good place to stay in Manhattan.

I stayed in a 10-shared room for a night. It's an affordable hostel in New York City. I was given two bed covers in the extreme cold winter. It's fabulous. The bathroom is nice and clean. The toilet is good too. The small restaurant is very cozy and they provide delicious foods. I love their fruit, choco-chip cakes, and sandwich. The employees are friendly. Sometimes the elevator is not working well. I pushed the button to go downstairs but it took me upstairs for several times without any reason.

The hostel is very close to the Central Park and Columbia University.
I do recommend this hostel for backpackers!

For the price it is a very good place. Well located, cleanliness in general good, sometimes if they did not happen to clean the showers they are a little dirty but normal. The activities they propose are a good way to meet people and the price is minimal

Clean rooms, amazing service, a block a way from the red line.

Absolutely the best hostel I've ever visited until now. Very friendly and helpful staff, possibility of breakfast at the bar downstairs. Optionally, there is a large kitchen which can be used for free. The common areas are 10 and praise, with a billiard room (always free) and a lounge with armchairs and sofas. To this, to add, a computer room and the various mobile phone charging stations. Super Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Possibility of laundry. The rooms are very large and spacious, the bathrooms shared with lots of Phon (which is not regular in Europe). Possibility to change the tablecloths daily asking kindly at the reception. The corridors are equipped with drinking water fountains. And then again, "knowledge" activities with free parties and drinks (including beer). Several excursions organized daily. The hostel is located in the Upper Manhattan very well connected with several metro lines. There is also the possibility to rent the lockers where you can leave your luggage after check-out (5 dollars up to 24h). What else to add? Should I return to NY, this would be my first certainty.
