Three star review because the beds seem short (I'm six foot tall), my feet touch the end. And this place can be very crowded. People come in and out of the room in all hours. One kid came in at 1:30 a.m. and proceeded to throw the lights on which is very rude imo.
Clean, friendly service, plenty of places to hang out inside. Lockers, locks at desk if you need one. Was nice to have a little changing spot inside the shower stalls.
A clean and safe place, for when you travel alone, the perfect bathrooms, there are rooms for up to 8 people, with heating and a cafeteria in the food area.
The receptionist was nice and had no trouble checking in but If you re looking for relaxation, this is not it.. People come in the room and turn on lights in middle of night making noise and have no consideration for others. The bathroom is not in room and it is located in hallway on other side shared with everyone on the floor. There s only two showers and two stalls. People constantly using it and there s no privacy obviously it is a hostel but it s not worth the price. It is far from main locations like Times Square, mid town, port authority etc... The lobby is full all of the time... a lot of people in big groups traveling with schools etc... If you really want to stay at a hostel to save some money I recommend the JAZZ HOSTEL on Colombus which is about the same price and it s is crentrally located in the city close to everything like restaurants, bars ,24hour shops, Times Square etc... It also includes free breakfast.,, it is never crowded and there is some privacy. You can lounge without having to be bother.. people seem more considerate and there are bathrooms inside of rooms. It might be a little more in terms of price but it is extremely worth it compared to this hostel and others in town... overall I must say this is okay compared to explore hostel in Jersey who has bedbugs. Thankfully there s no bed bugs in his location and it can work if you re on a tight budget.....
Excellent attention, we played in the mixed room with super nice people, rich and rich breakfast, if they are going to stay the breakfast is an excellent option to include, they give you bathing flip flops, and towels every day, has a hair dryer and a very large kitchen
The staff and events along with the volunteers are very friendly!!
Great hostel, direct and interesting guided tours for a low price. Relatively centrally located, it depends on which parts of New York you want to visit, a prime location for the island of Manhattan at an affordable price. Showers and toilets well cared for, amount of water from the shower could be better. Restaurant in the hostel offers a good and extensive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For the self "cookers" there is a large kitchen with all the trimmings available. There are also various hangout places and a computer room where you can print documents. The ATM at the hostel requires a lower PIN charge than the banks of New York.
Too few bathrooms, the ones they do have are like swamps, smelly and humid. The bins were emptied way no where near enough. They are renovating the lift, but didn't tell me, I picked it because it said it had a lift and I had a huge suitcase, no one offered to help either.
They were also renovating other areas of the place, the common areas, which meant they were not available to use. This wasn't disclosed beforehand either.
They also provide you with a direct way to contact the front desk, I was traveling alone and got really ill and couldn't contact anyone for assistance.
It is one of the best in the city. Very complete. An incredibly equipped kitchen. Amazing bathrooms and showers, many common areas. The WiFi is very good throughout the building. In addition, it has a cafeteria where they sell everything. And laundry for little money. Activities every day The only negative is that it is somewhat removed from the center of Manhattan (upper west side), but it is one of the best!
The staff was nice and helpful, the rooms, restrooms and showers clean and working! Good location 5-10min walk from Central park. The bar was good, too.
Nice clean hostel. I felt very comfortable here. Attractive offer of activities.
Highly recommended is Jerry's Grand Tour.
This Hostel isn't big, is huge! Close to subway, clean, safe and very helpful staff.
Location is fantastic and near multiple subway stops. Rooms were clean and big enough. Our ac was broken and they fixed it immediately when we brought up the complaint. Everyone is friendly and hospitable.
Decent hostel with plugs and lights at every bed and super close to the metro. If the price difference between the normal dorms and deluxe is minimal then pay the little extra as it will include breakfast and a slightly nicer dorm (including two pillows, and in some cases a small wooden return which gives some privacy). The only downfall of this place is that there are two many common rooms which are awkwardly laid out making it a bit harder to meet people. Also beware that there is a VERY wide range of ages staying here.
My first time here . Super clean and various things to do always . Crew is very attentive and no just that, amazing prices. Im staying 7 days and everything is close by too, taxi, train, shops pizza , supermarkets etc. Another thing I almost missed was the huge kitchen. I didn't get to use it but is pretty convenient. I'll definitely book here again.
Beds are clean, mattresses somehow ok. Considering it's a hostel I guess I should say it's fine. But I slept 3 nights and my back is killing me. The aircon is terrible loud and direct next to my bunk bed.
The showers are for my understanding not really clean when I look in the corners. Someone killed a mosquito in the shower on day one ... It's still there.
The smell in the rooms and the corridors are also a bit on the downside.
Receptionist were still kind of friendly but they need more staff. I waited almost an hour for check in. Not there fault but if management reads this, give them a bonus they do work hard and still stay friendly but their tiredness is recognizable.
The common areas are widely open, clean and inviting. There's also a pattio which is inviting to sit and chill.
Very friendly neighborhood and well connected.
Overall it's ok considering I paid something like 35 euro per night.
But for sure it wasn't a good enough experience to let me return.
A giant and modern Hostel. My best experience was here!
Great atmosphere and loads of activities which are actually good.
Perfect for visiting NYC for a single person, everything in perfect condition and the location is excellent
The bad thing is bed no comfortable at all you cannot even move
Bath was nice with hot water
Clean toilet
Average breakfast
Best hostels in NYC. Nice staff and beautiful place.
Great kitchen and dining area. Nice coffee bar, comparable to Starbucks' pricing system.
Amazing hostel. Though I had the unfortunate experience of being surrounded by guys who REALLY needed to wear deodorant. You could tell the hostel was otherwise clean, but whoever's BO that was really drunk up the place.
Everything is awesome, as hostel not hotel the room was little smelly
One of the cheapest hostels in NYC, the rooms are clean and the staff is helpful. The large mixed dorm I was in didn't have curtains though so I wasn't sure if that was just that room or what, but I have stayed and would stay here again.
It's a nice place
I went to NYC last weekend and I was a little worried about a good location and I found this Hostel. I booked a shared female room and the experiences was good!.
- Good price.
- The beds, sheets, pillow, blanket look and are clean as the bathrooms.
- The lockers are next to your bed, looks safe leave your stuff there but I recommend you bring your personal padlock.
- Great location (two blocks away from central park and 10 minutes away walking from subway).
- The cafeteria has a good menu, fresh products fair price. (I bought a real orange juice! the best choice for a breakfast)
- They have a pool table, comfortable couches and the customer service was very kind, attentive and cordial.
- The guest are respectful.
Thanks guys for made part of my first experience in NYC the best!
Good hostel, room were a little smelly but the bathrooms were clean. They have a cafe in the hostel that looks really nice.
I stayed here for a couple nights before begining my trip to India and my stay was nice and pleasant. The hostel is located in one of the best neighbors in NYC, upper west side and the subway is just 5 mins away by walking. The staff is friendly, the place is clean and the , is a litle bit expensive for a regular hostel if you had been traveling for a while, however is NYC, here everything is more costly... Indeed is a good place to stay...enjoy NYC!
I have spent several summers in this place that I love, and I have taken numerous pictures for people to see. In the past, my pictures had a lot of views, but now it does not happen. Not that I think "my pictures" are the best, but when the organization like the HI New York City Hostel plasters the area with pictures that are all amazing Photoshop pictures, it shows that something is going on....a sense of insecurity, that institution needs to tell the story because as the guest, we are not doing correctly...which is wrong.
This platform is here for us the user to give honest review, so when I see a very Photoshop pictures of a place, I have the opposite reaction.
Yes, I know that Airbnb has eaten some of the number of guests coming to NYC, but the better policy will be to embrace us not to push us away, putting all the real pictures at the begining ..
Fear and consulting marketing comes with this tricks and manipulations, but the real truth is the opposite, let your customers tell the story, and then, you will have more customers.
I always, when suggesting corrections, bring the Starbuck Cafe organization because they are not only excellent at customer service, but they have also created a loyal follow up that like me buy their products all around the world.
By the way, I do not come to the HI New York City Hostel because it has favoulous rooms, or restaurants, I come because as a woman of certain age, when I drop my children in Summer Intensives in NYC, I like a place where people sit together to work in their computers with no special agenda.
If I want to be alone and have superb services, I will go to any hotel in town.
And as a matter of fact, this summer, I will go to an Airbnb with my family that comes from Argentina to visit.
So my question to HINYCH is what can you learn from Airbnb that is so attractive to people, and what can you apply to your organization? Because to move up, you do not need to push everybody down. What you need to do is bring everybody up with you. I am just saying...
It's a fantastic place to stay at. Warm hip and inviting vibe, several great amenities,
Very good facilities, several social spaces. I just point out that the shower is bad, with very little water, no pressure and it heats very little so the baths are of warm water. I would like the staff to be more friendly and close to the customers.
Everything has gone excellent. The included breakfast is a bread with cheese and a juice, I do not recommend it; It is better to get the room without breakfast and your paying for the other breakfast options they offer. Of all the hostels in which I have stayed, this is one of the best and by far. Everything is very clean and very comfortable, I would easily stay a week.
The best way is the cafeteria. The hostel is expensive it is a hostel it should be cheap. Also at second floor some of the baths are not working. They should fix them . In rooms ,people don't have enough space to put their baggages. They can make a baggage drop room. It is a clean hostel. Maybe you can find cheaper one with less luxury.
Went with a group of 15. They were very helpful getting it set up, as well as during our stay.
A clean, safe, and cheap place to stay on the Upper West Side Of Manhattan. A block away from a subway station (103 & Broadway). Make sure to bring your own lock for the lockers in your room.
Good value for money. Very clean restrooms and bathrooms))) only when check-in the girl at the reception was very rude = (But in general - everything is super!
It is the best hostel I stay at. The price is good. The attention is first class the location is very good, if you prefer to be a little quieter than in the center of NYC. Very close to Central Park. And of the subway
The facilities are fine, but somewhat costly. The hostel is too big, hence there's not much scope for meeting new people.
The lighting wasn't great and the elevator wasn't great either, but overall it was a nice stay.
Went for a concert event. I didn't see any of the rooms, but the common areas are nice and clean, and the patio is a very chill space.
Great and economic lively place in heart of New York! Staff was very nice and helpful. Escalator was very slow though! Air condition was old style but manageable. Huge groups of students were there all the time for traveling in groups. Comedy shows are organized once a week and lots of stuff to do!
If you are looking for quality-price it is the right place! Good atmosphere, clean and a great location!
Been there twice and absolutely love it. Would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Just because you're on a budget, doesn't mean you have give up on safety or cleanliness. Since the accommodations are dorm-style, it's a more attractive option for those of us in the millennial generation.
Wonderful hostel, ok location, spacious, clean and very good customer service!
Honestly had one of the nicest and most helpful staff. Great place with heaps to do, would definitely recommend for all the aussies out there
Excellent experience. Clean, great attention, comfortable, well located. I never had to wait for a bath or a shower. The common spaces very good. The beautiful patio. The best, organized activities, outings, barbecues, excursions, etc.
Had the best experience here. A bunch of free activities, they made me fall in love with the city, very nice crew. Lots of people around the world traveling alone. Great vibe!!!
Very nice modern hostel with the most friendly staff and welcoming
Good facilities [Toilets: Good sanitary condition {Partition toilets: 3 / Wash basin: 3 / Shower booth (enough to wait for shower): 6} / Rooms: Tidy {Bunk beds: 4, total 8 / Each bed has a light, a wall socket and a More
For the price, it's perfect. Clean, great location. Has a made bed plus pillow, sheet and a blanket. The ac worked great, it was clean, friendly staff. The bathroom was never too busy and there was enough space in the shower. I was very surprised how cleaned the bathrooms were. The bed has a curtain for privacy. Also has a ledge above the pillow to store things, there was a light for your bunk so you don't disturb others with the light. Also appreciated all the plugin available above the bed and in the locker. Will definitely stay here when I come back to NYC
Great place to stay. I had the 4 bed premium door room. People there are friendly, travelers, and has a good social atmosphere. Washroom are clean and the room is clean too. Air conditioning is good. Location is good too. Lots of free tours and events.
Great staff, helpful and friendly. It's a nice place to be.
My bed was incredibly uncomfortable, with a person in my room that snored like a tractor. The staff was yelling outside and inside the room while I was there. The internet stopped working all the time. One of the outlets in my bed didn't work.
In a pretty good location. Met some nice people. Not too far from the 1. Close to central park.
Great staff, very organized and clean rooms and bathrooms, they have lots of activities, simple but good breakfast, great location!
Clean and fully equipped. Lacks the charm a smaller hostel could have. Not really suited for single travelers, as it feels more like a hotel.
Really nice patio for convivial outdoor discussions
It's a great location, right by 103rd and Amsterdam. It's also right by many subway accesses, making it extremely convenient to get downtown in less than 30min. The staff, the facilities and the cleanliness of the facilities is top notch. Always great activities happening during the week
One of the best Hostel I like in Manhattan. Easily located by Subway. Nice staff with nice facilities.
Convenient location, great staff, better than expected bathrooms and the best is that they assign locked and beds per person in the dorms. What more can you need from a hostel?
If you're after a simple, clean base in NYC this hostel is a great option. The facilities are excellent, and with the exception of the bathrooms at the end of the day, the cleanliness is great. The atmosphere is different to a youth hostel though as there are people of all ages including floods of school children and their teachers. That said, efforts are made to accomodate those used to a typical hostel atmosphere. ie: pub crawls, communal areas etc. Overall the balance actually seems to work well as everybody seems well behaved.
I found that the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay, although, one or two seemed as though they were the ones who were checking out. Of most concern, however, was their expectations on solo travellers to constantly change rooms. I found it very frustrating that they seemed to think this was reasonable without offering additional discounts or even apologies. Perhaps once in a week would be fair but I was told to check out and in again on four of my six days, similar to other soll travellers. This means leaving luggage behind their counter and not having a room again until late afternoon. At least it means fresh sheets again but it is a pain if you want to sleep in, nap in the day, or get in at night and go straight to bed.
The rooms are spacious and clean, everything is well organized. The shared spaces are very functional and well maintained, the wifi is regular, but not bad. The showers are comfortable, there is a floor for men and a floor for women and bathrooms in each, not per room. The lockers in the rooms are a bit small, there is a charger near the bed and individual light. The kitchen is super complete, you can prepare your meals comfortably and store it in the refrigerator. There are things that are to share (like oil, salt, pepper, etc.). The location is not very good since it is far from the main centers, but one can walk through the Central Park that is a few blocks away or take the subway. The schedules are very strict (regarding noise and light), but have better coexistence. I recommend it to travel alone or with friends and meet people from other countries.
Great structure, does not offer breakfast, but has excellent structure with snacks, fruits and very good breakfast in relation to NYC
Easy, clean, and friendly hostel. I just needed a place to crash and shower that was inexpensive and safe. Other travelers were interesting and friendly; overall an excellent experience.
Hostel itself is excellent in both location and basic facilities.
I selected 6-bed room type which more private but some guests may disturb you and lack of consideration and thoghtfulness .
Very accommodating, clean, and up-to-date. There are a plethora of entertainment options and lounges.
Not the most comfortable but good service and location
Very good hostel. Full of spaces in common and very well taken care of. Something far from time square but close to two metro lines that take you everywhere.
Excellent place, atmosphere, location and cleanliness.
Great location and affordable prices for wonderful amenities
Good place to stay , very good prices secure and near attractions
Went for a wedding, not disappointed with the space inside.
Huge, nice quiet and 3 minutes from a metro station. And for the runners you are really not far from Central Park!
