located just uptown Manhattan, I loved the atmos6at this place. it is well kept and very clean. staff is friendly and if you book it in advance, you can get a better price. they have a range of rooms from dorms to private. away from the noisy downtown area you can relax here. food offered at the cafe is pretty good too, breakfast sandwiches from $5.50 onwards and many other food items+ beverages. the elevator was out of service on all 3 days out of there which was annoying, and the bed I slept on wasnt comfortable. But it's a very spacious lovely space

I do not give 5 for reasons of an employee called Ester who works in very unprofessional recess bad character when working with the public personal problems you can not interfere during work hours so your appearance is in a wrong position not sociable not gentle negative and little communicative and what he receives in return is a gesture of rudeness

It's very very clean. Quiet hours are respected for the most part and the staff have been a class act all around. Location is more than decent for the price, having two metro lines within walking distance.

It doesn't even include breakfast with how expensive it is. Any tourist faints upon arrival after the treatment of immigration authorities.

A pity that a country with such rigor used it so insensitively.

The building is a tenement house.

It's a very good place to stay in Manhattan.
Everything is walkable, and that matters when you are a tourist. Food is good, awesome cleaning, great service. I stayed here for a couple of days and enjoyed the stay.

The rooms were nice but the staff were extremely lazy, rude, and unprofessional. I was probably one of the only Americans staying there during my stay and I'm honestly embarrassed that that is how they behave around all of the international guest. Its unfortunate that the staff have the ability to make a positive impact and help there guest out but instead they choose to live up to every negative image that foreigners think of Americans and probably much worse. They don't answer their phone, return voicemails, they don't help their guest, or make any effort to be productive at work. I even witnessed one of the staff yelling and cussing at one of the guest. Although some of the staff was nice I encountered many more that were so rude. If you are thinking of staying here DON'T Business that operate as terribly as this one does needs to be shut down! I don't know how this is a non profit to help people when they care so little for others.

You should book it through internet. And also if you have more plans to visit this hostel next time, go sign up for membership. Best hostel in NYC! I always stay at this place while visiting the city. The position is very convenient-- near Central Park, lots of great restaurants, near metro station, etc. Also, the hostel itself provides lots of fun activities such as Beer night, pizza night, grand tour for the city, bar tour. People stay at this place are also very nice. I made lots of good friends here! The room is clean and cozy too.

This is probably the best bang for your buck hostel in NYC. Rooms are very nice and clean. The in-room lockers are huge and unless you have some sort of massive luggage your stuff will definitely fit. Really awesome common rooms and theater room. Great location 1 block from the subway. Food in the cafe downstairs is just OK though. Nothing special.

Since they have a lot of brunch in different cities and countries and they are mostly top rated in most of the cities you can say they know what they are doing. You wouldn t have trouble if you are staying in a HI hostel.

I really truly love this hotel! Their front desk was super friendly and enthusiastic! Their interior design felt very welcome and great vibe. Every morning they have a good breakfast menu you can eat and drink before you begin your adventure.
I do like their room they provide because you can pick either coed or single gender. Plus the room have 4,6.8,10, or 12 people. Of course the fewer the people the more money to pay compare to tons of people. I m absolutely glad they offer a locker for your stuff to be storage. You need to remember to bring your own TOWER and a small lock to lock your locker (or buy it from them). The locker will only fit for Carry-on suitcase.
Hi New York offer some small activity at night time so you can have fun and meet people from all over the world. Other activities to do is pool table, watch tv downstairs and use computer. You will need to pay for computer and make sure you bring CASH.
They do offer s Subway Map.
I truly love this place and will come back if I ever visit NY again!

Great hostel! It is much better than I expected. Bathrooms are clean and big, dorms as well. There is a super duper kitchen with 4 fridges, 6 cookers, microwave ovens, plates and everything you need. There is a restaurant too with nice food at very reasonable prices. And a laundry room! They organise activities - tours, some are for free, parties, comedy nights.... Staff and guests are very friendly too!

Excellent hostel. Short walk from subway line 1, b and c. Short walk from central park too. Room was clean and tidy. Bathrooms are clean, there is enough of them as well as showers. Beds are behind curtains for privacy, a locker is provided but a lock is not. They are available at reception for $3.27. Communal spaces are nice - both indoors and out. Customer service was nice most of the time, with the occasional moment where it lapsed slightly.

I stayed twice. This last time I felt that the facilities are already a little old. My room smelled horrible and my roommates were not the most friendly. However, I would go back many times, it is an excellent option for little budget. The neighborhood where it is is safe.

Hostel highly recommended, good location, near the subway and if you want to walk you can do it by central park that has it close too.
As for the facilities, the room I was in was spacious, the bed was not bad, the bathrooms nearby and several, which is a plus point, you do not have one to wait. There are many resting areas, a room with sofas, another with sofas and a table, where they usually hold events, there is a room where you can find information about NY and computers, another with TV, if you fancy a film session, a great kitchen, which has everything, you have stickers to put your name and so can keep it in the fridge, there is also an outdoor patio for smokers. I had breakfast so I had as a menu with several alternatives, quite complete, you have a choice of sweet or salty, tea or coffee and a piece of fruit, for me it was perfect, if you do not have the option of breakfast included, they have a lot of variety of food to choose from, the staff is super nice.
Cleaning by the employees was great, if there was something out of place it was quite obvious that it was for a guest who did not respect the common areas.
It does not get the five stars because I had a problem with the heater of the room and failed every two for three, it was a bit uncomfortable to be sleeping at home and at dawn wake up because you're freezing, one day nothing happens, but I was a week hosted and in the end I opted to put 3 blankets. Another thing is that they only have an elevator, if you go without large suitcases there is no problem because stairs have everywhere but otherwise, you get bored waiting for the only lift they have.
For everything else, it's perfect! I would go back! That if, if you go in winter attentive with the heater!

Great hostel very clean and modern, long waits for counter service (checking in etc.) and breakfast not included you must pay $4.99 also had to wait 4.5 hours for my bed to be made available when checking in at my scheduled time at 2pm. They told me this is normal as cleaning staff runs behind all the time :S

Ya know what? I would have never in a million years though about the option of staying at a hostel. NEVER!! But after the few night saying in NYC. To have a facility better than some hotels that have stars and diamonds for the person just stopping through the city just for a few days open to the world and the people of the world. I met so many people from everywhere and even made some friends along the way . The customer service the facility and the accommodation are great especially for the price you pay in the city .

It's great, awesome. Very clean, excellent price. Just need to take care of someone at the reception that does not have the best of attitudes, but otherwise everything is fine. Even the food is great and at unbeatable prices.

Staff here are really helpful and friendly, the space in the room isn't bad, I stayed in the hi Boston and it was more space and less money. It is located close to the metro but will take you about 45 minutes to walk to the bottom. Of central park. Breakfast in the morning is great!

The location and facilities within this hostel are brilliant- one street away from the subway. The only downside was they mixed up my booking and I had to stay in a coed dorm rather then single gender as booked. Still rating it 5 stars for price, included breakfast and facilities- best hostel I've been to in a long time - I will 100% only stay here when in NYC from now on!

For singel travelers the hostel is not to recommend. It is so big that its really hard to meet new people. The atmosphere is like in a hotel. The hostel is really expensive and the worst: w-lan is not working, because too many people are useing it at the same time.

Like all HI hostels very good. Here they have managed to fix a good hostel in an older building. The staff is nice and knowledgeable. There is a cafeteria and a dining room. The hostel does not serve breakfast. Prices are a bit higher in the cafeteria, but good when you consider the price level of NY. They have open doors for staff from the tourism information. These work for free. There are also "free tours" guides, but they charge $ 10 for each tour - before the tour starts. There are different tours (full, half day). Time spent depends on the tour itself. There is a tour for Manhattan and Middleton, one for Brooklyn and one for Black Harlem. From the last, I was very disappointed because Harlem is no longer any different than "regular" areas. The Brookline tour is best for sports enthusiasts.

It's a hostel. What can I say that hasn't been said. A lot of people raved about the location. It's just ok. Proximity to the 1 line is literally one block over so that's the plus if you hate walking. It's not necessarily a bad area but not a great one either. It's the West side, just short of Harlem. I actually have stayed in Harlem east and felt safer there. Also if this is your first time in NYC just a heads up Central Park is 2.5 miles long. From this hostel, you will enter on the far northwest side, which is a long walk to Manhattan. Not that that's a terrible thing, but don't think you're just going to pop on over to 5th Avenue. I'm actually not a fan of 5th Ave. and I despise Times Square (which is even further south) so this worked out just fine for me.
The hostel itself, was very busy at checkin. It would've been nice to have a little more instruction, like which door to enter. But I get it, there was a long line of tired backpackers.
The dorms weren't at all ventilated. A humid New York July makes for a sweaty feet smell in the room. Also breakfast is not included which makes the price seem a little steep for dorm style lodging. But they do have fair priced options in the cafe downstairs. I didn't try anything. It all looked fine, but it's NYC, there are lots of choices. Other than that it was ok. The mattress isn't the best. Each bed has a small lamp and a charging outlet. There were people coming in and throughout the night but this is to be expected. Bathrooms were cleaned on the hour. The co-working space and patio are nice, but don't come to New York just for that please. They hostel does have some local hook-ups like inexpensive walking tours and $12.50. Yankee tickets. If you want to see the city, this is not a bad place to crash. Self checkout is nice, just drop your key in the box and be on your way. Go to Brooklyn for pizza. Make sure know if you want to go uptown or downtown BEFORE you enter the subway. And again, don't spend too much time in Times Square. Enjoy!
