The last time I was in India, visited Nepal thru this airport. On my way back, passed thru this airport. The staff here are always scheming to fleece passengers. For example, they will push a pax to buy 2 bottles of liquor, but withhold the free faux leather bag that comes with it as a free gift. I had to call a manager to get the bag that was due to me anyway, but which a young looking short guy tried to defraud me out of. BEWARE. And if possible make your purchases in other airports. Price is low here, granted, but the attitude is terrible.

This is the only airport in Kolkata. The check-in and check-out was smooth. You have get your luggage scanned at the scanner machine which are away from boarding pass counter. Its not like Delhi where you drop your check-in luggage at the counter and then issued boarding pass. You have to get your luggage scanned at different point and then drop the luggage at the counter. There are counters for Ola and Uber. The counter for pre-paid taxi was very crowded.

The facilities are good

An airport of standard with good arrangements, but it needs more attention for development from Airport Authority of India, and of course, from the local management and Govt of WBengal for keeping the surrounding places clean up to a few kilometers from the airport, which we don't find in VIP road or nearby other roads around.

But food, water and other beverages are very expensive.
GOI and AAI should make some arrangements for reasonable price.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport ...

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is located at Dumdum, kolkata, West Bengal, India. It is an international airport. One of the busiest airports and also one of the largest airports in India. This airport is very beautifully organised and well maintained, both domestic and international terminals under one room. The staffs are also very well behaved. The services provided in this airport is quite satisfying except the AIR INDIA(Whether it is ground staff's behaviour or services provided by them. Their services are very poor and also management is very disappointing of this airline).

Though the airport is spread over an area of 1641 acres (664 ha) also it is the largest hub for air traffic in Eastern part of India and one of two international airports operating in WestBengal, the other being in bagdogra.

Today my experience was pathetic.. I have to wait for 45 mins to get the luggage.. No supporting staff no where.. Coming from bengaluru to kolkata in SpiceJet(9.45 pm was scheduled arrival time but came 10.15 pm) No where I saw any staff at all... Outsie of the airport (car parking area) people parked their car middle of the road and doing loading and unloading... . Some people I saw parked at reserved place (divyanga) and picking normal passengers

This is one of the best airports I have ever seen in my life. There's enough space in the terminal area and it never felt crowded. Security check is located just behind airline counters, you don't need to wonder here and there. You can easily locate the gate. Good eating options are available inside. There are duty free shops both at departure as well as arrival of international terminal. The airport is very well connected with city's other points. I really loved to travel to this airport as this airport attracted me in such a way that I always wish to fly through this airport. This airport not only function well with wonder staff but also have all the ultra modern facilities.

This International airport in Kolkata provides all the required facilities and comforts as per International standard. The security check-in procedure is very smooth. There are many display boards showing the departure and arrival of the flights. But the change of gate numbers at the last moment after security check-in should be avoided to facilitate the passengers to remain tension free. There are many shops of international brands and adequate food parlours and restaurants for the waiting passengers. The cost of food and beverages are very high. There are plenty of well maintained rest rooms. The ambience of the airport is wonderful and the whole building is beautifully decorated with aesthetic sense. There are arrangements for wheelchairs and transportation cars inside the building

Poor service and connectivity. Don't take the prepaid taxi. Horrible vehicles and poor availability. Had to wait half an hour. If you are urgently going somewhere or need a comfortable ride pay more and hire a private taxi.

We were there in early jan'16. The new building is impressive but the international terminal is pretty bare. Very limited food options and the maintenance is fast deteriorating. Need to act ASAP to ensure it doesn't get any worse!

Compared to how it was few years back, it has improved a lot when I saw it early July

I liked the fact that drop in baggage also needs to be screened, it adds extra. Cleanliness is there but needs to set up more restrooms near boarding gates.

Airport and airlines staff are friendly and helpful.

Security check ins are hassle-free, though the tip is to come a bit early to avoid last minute hurry and rush.

One of the largest international airport terminals...

One of the largest international airport terminals in India (in size)...however there are very few international sectors which is served from this airport...
It is connected with almost all major airports of India...also it works as the connection hub for North east India...as all the airports of NE India has a connection from CCU...
Regarding international sectors...it has connection to KUL, SIN, BKK, DAC, PBH, KMG, KTM, AUH, DOH, DXB...however most of the international sectors are served either by their national carriers or LCC...like Air Asia, Silk Air etc...
Regarding the airport the terminal was open for operations only in 2013...however, over the years things have improved...now there is a bus terminus where buses are available for major points of the city (only ac bus)...available from 8am to 8pm...apart from that inside the airport there is ample area for waiting both at the gates as well as near the check-in counters...the architecture of this airport is very beautiful and aesthetic...from the huge glass facade to the ceiling which is designed in the form of bengali alphabets...apart from that there are some murals, a small garden and some sculpture depicting various cultural forms of West Bengal...
After the security check there are ample stores including a store of Biswa Bangla, pubs, restaurant and a food court...the airport also provides free 30mins wifi...
Now coming to the cons..its pretty difficult to sight a trolley and the washrooms are not that clean...however there are drinking water stations at various points in the airport...
Taxis are easily available at the airport...though best would be to go for prepaid taxis...however app cabs like Uber/Ola is also available...at the exit gates...also radio cabs like Megacabs are also available but the number is sparce...

Long before the British came to India, the zaminda...

Long before the British came to India, the zamindari (land lordship) of all lands from Barisha to Halisahar, in what is now mostly in the Kolkata (formerly called Kali Kshetra, Land of Goddess Kali) area, were acquired by the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family from the Mughal emperor Jahangir.[3]

With the decline of the once flourishing Saptagram port, traders and businessmen, such as the Basaks, the Sheths and others, started venturing southwards and settled in or developed places such as Gobindapur. They set up a cotton and yarn market at Sutanuti. Chitpur was a weaving centre and Baranagar was another textile centre. Kalighat was a pilgrimage centre. Across the Hooghly, there were places such as Salkia and Betor. Kalikata was a lesser known place. While both Sutanuti and Gobindapur appear on old maps like Thomas Bowrey's of 1687 and George Herron's of 1690, Kalikata, situated between the two, is not depicted. However, one variant of the name, Kalkata , is mentioned in Abul Fazal s Ain-i-Akbari (1596).[3][4] At that time it was recorded as a revenue district of Sirkar Satgaon.[5]

Jorasanko Thakur Bari, now Rabindra Bharati University
In 1698, Charles Eyre, son-in-law of the early colonial administrator, Job Charnock, acquired the zemindari rights of Gobindapur, Kalikata and Sutanuti from the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family.[4] Subsequent to the fall of Siraj-ud-daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, the English purchased 55 villages in 1758 from Mir Jafar. These villages were known en-bloc as Dihi Panchannagram.[3]

After the Treaty of Allahabad, the East India Company was granted Diwani rights (the right to collect taxes), in 1765, in the eastern province of Bengal-Bihar-Odisha. In 1772, Kolkata became the capital of East India Company's territories, and in 1793, the English took full control of the city and the province. Development of Kolkata's infrastructure started and in the early 19th century, the marshes surrounding the city were drained. In the 19th century, Kolkata was the epicentre of the epoch-changing socio-cultural movement, the Bengal Renaissance. The 20th century unfolded historical events in Kolkata the Swadeshi movement, the first partition of Bengal along communal lines, shifting of the national capital from Kolkata to Delhi in 1911 and Kolkata emerged as an important hub of the independence movement. With the experience and memories of the Bengal famine of 1943, the Great Calcutta Killings, the final partition of Bengal, and independence of the country, Kolkata moved on to a new era of challenges, with millions of refugees pouring in from neighbouring East Pakistan (later Bangladesh).[3]

Before partition of Bengal, Kolkata had offered education and job opportunities to the people from East Bengal. Kolkata had taken in about a quarter of a million East Bengali migrants long before partition. After partition of Bengal, the number of refugees moving in from East Bengal were so high that large stretches of rural or semi urban habitation were transformed into towns, the density of population, particularly in areas with high refugee population, jumped by leaps. The outer limits of Kolkata were extended. The entire process of urbanisation was hastened. In the fifties 25% of the population of Metropolitan Kolkata were refugees. In 1975, a CMDA report suggested that there were 1,104 squatter colonies in West Bengal, out of which 510 were in Calcutta Metropolitan District.[6] In 1981, a refugee rehabilitation committee set up by the state government put the figures for refugees in the state at 8 million. The break up for Kolkata is not available. The central government had decided that 25 March 1971 was the cut off date for entry of refugees from former East Pakistan into India and so, all those coming in after that date are either immigrants or infiltrators there were no more refugees, at least officially/legally.[7]

The socio-economic conditions that led to the growth of Kolkata, were urbanising a much larger territory. Right form the 16th century, a number of townships, based on trade and commerc

I've been here thrice. This is a good airport, all facilities are available. But needs to be extended. The length of the first runway (01R/19L) is around 3.6 km whereas the length of the second runway (01L/19R) is 2.8 km. The 2nd runway (01L/19R) is needed to be extended at whatever cost. This will add beauty and reputation to this airport.

I liked the Airport. Perfectly represent the Bengali Culture and art works.I like the Green area at arrival gates in the terminal.
- There are lots of Washrooms. I noticed there were Indian style Toilet seats too. It'd be convenient for some.
- Most of Famous food outlets are available.
- Drinking water fountains are perfectly installed most of the parts.
