My wife had a hysterectomy, and it went well, except that there was some secondary nerve damage. I am certain that this is due to the fact that various trainees were involved in the operation. That's the downside to the Vanderbilt Hospital: The doctors are great but trainees are always involved and they cannot be as good as the doctors. So I always am hesitant to go to Vanderbilt Hospital.

Went to opryland Vanderbilt clinic to get my girlfriend treatment. Arrived at noon and greeted with a sign on the door stating they were closed from 12 to 1230... No warning of this online.

After waiting for them to reopen we came in at around 1234 and nobody was at the front desk. When finally greeted the employee acted confused and wanted us to wait another 10 minutes in the lobby saying 'were just reopening please have a seat'.... Not good business practice.

When the receptionist finally got back from her break we are told that we need to wait til 115 for the next appointment despite not a soul passing the lobby in the mean time.

While we waited another man entered for walking care and was told to wait til 145..

Again... Not a soul walked through this lobby for an appointment. Why should each patient take 30 minutes for a quick checkup? Why weren't they ready to serve the first walkin guest after their lunch break?

Came to the Emergency Room. Ridiculous to wait over 7 hours to see a physician. There should be a law against patients being in pain and having to wait this long. Something is wrong with this!

I was previously diagnosed with a fracture in my right foot on jan 21st 2018 at st.Thomas midtown. I was told to follow up in 3 to 5 days if symptoms worsens. I went to Vanderbilt today on jan 23 2018 because increased swelling an discoloration and the doctor left me waiting five hours without pain medication having to endure the pain of the x_ray process un medicated. After waiting the doctor said he saw no fractures and the radiologist didn't either. I thought orthopedics were to decide not a xray tech. I am highly disappointed in the medical staff an i wont return to this hospital for any reason what so ever.

VUMC is one of the worst collections of clinics I've ever been to - mostly due to patient service. It takes MONTHS to get an appointment, and once you finally have an appointment the doctors are generally inattentive. When you receive your bill, it's also INCREDIBLY over-priced! I had two different doctors look at the same (simple) issue - one (a dermatologist) billed $252, while the other (a GP) billed ~$6,000 (same procedure with EXACT same medical coding on bill). The only reason they could give is "that's just what that doctor charges..." I've heard numerous accounts of this happening to other people as well! I don't know how VUMC can call themselves a non-profit!

Due to an accident at home, my husband was sent by ambulance from Dalton Ga to Vanderbilt. He suffered 1st & 2nd degree burns over 19% of his body. Everyone of the burn unit staff members were extremely welcoming and helpful. We were there a total of 13 days and they went out of their way for us. We were given a room with two beds so I had my own bed, not a chair, to sleep on each night. They knew our situation, being so far from home, and made us feel right at home. The doctors who performed his surgery all came by to check on him several times afterward. The staff is just completely extraordinary in my opinion. And the food is just as good as the staff is helpful.

Real doctors, an emergency room that understands what an emergency is, thorough examination. Top notch staff. The best of the best.
if you go to another hospital when you're really sick, you'll wind up here eventually, so save yourself the time & trouble & just come here to begin with.

Not sure how this hospital has such a good reputat...

Not sure how this hospital has such a good reputation when word of mouth says they treat those with money much better then the poor. (Mind you I've heard this from one of their own employees). From my experience I was 16 weeks pregnant at the time and came due to pelvic pain. While there I had to sit in one of those hall way beds where I could hear others problems and they could hear mine, this violates HIPAA if you ask me. Anyways while I was there, I had to have 4 ultrasounds done YES 4 ultrasounds because their damn student nurses didn't know what the heck they were doing. One lady said she couldn't find my ovary and my baby's heart rate was 100, the next person said it was 150 and then back to 100 and no one seemed concerned. Anyone pregnant knows 100 bpm isn't normal around the later stages of pregnancy.. and you don't have to be a nurse to know that. Oh, then they thought I had an ovarian torsion, and they were WAY OFF.. they gave me some bs excuse as of why I should stay at the hospital that night. Me and my husband refused because of the poor quality service... and obviously no one knew what they were doing. As I left I was told me and my baby could die..as a scare tactic.

Well I'm still alive, and he's alive too.. a simple bladder infection was all it was.

Worst hospital I've ever been too. Stay away!

We have been going to Vanderbilt s children s hospital and their research areas for over a year now and we really like it. We have had an especially good experience with the Mutlisensory Research Lab. Our child and my husband have participated in medical research studies here and the people are always so kind and flexible. We will continue to participate and we have even recommended Vanderbilt to others!

This rating is for patient billing ONLY! The Children's Hospital is probably one of the best hospitals ever I couldn't have asked for better service for my child. The doctors were amazing anf the nurses did everything they could to make sure my daughter was comfortable during her surgery. However, the billing department is another story. My husband who served in the Army had Tricare on our family. His 6 years were up 4 days after my daughter got hurt so her surgery was paid for but her doctor visits we're not paid for until we got new insurance 4 weeks later. I saved money and called them to pay what we owed on her doctor bills. I was told $520 so I paid it I was then told that I didn't know any more money. I get a notice from Affiliated creditors saying that I still owe $456.30. When I called to tell them I paid it they told me I didnt so I call Vanderbilt patient billing. The woman I spoke with was eating something and smaking it in my ear and was also very rude. She did not have any answers for me except that I still owed the $456. Every time I asked her a question she would respond back with another question in a very hateful voice. Inside I'm frustrated because I owe this much money and i was doing everything I could to be as kind as possible only to be spoken to in a rude way. It took every ounce of control for me not to scream at this lady. She did not give me her name. I literally had to just hang up the phone because of how rude this woman was being to me.

Billing and Payment:

Billing and Payment:
My husband was taken to Vanderbilt Hospital on January 20, 2018 by Air-Evac from Bowling Green. He passed away on January 30, 2018. After receiving several bills for services and waiting an appropriate time for all the bills to pass through Medicare, they sent final bills that coordinated with the Medicare Summary Notices that had been received. I paid the final amount of $1,525.06. Paid it on May 15, and it cleared the bank on the 23rd of May. Yesterday I received a notice that there was due an amount of $771.13. I looked the bill over carefully and it was an exact duplicate of all the other bills they had sent, but credited to my husband's account was only $753.93. So I called them and asked why the entire $1,525.06 was not credited. I was told that they paid a different bill with the money I sent; a bill they never sent to me. A bill that they had no intentions of sending me. They then told me that since I was never sent the other bill, they'd be happy to send it out next week. But in the meantime, I owe the $771.13. (That I already paid)

Well I may be totally stupid, but Medicare gets all the bills automatically sent to them. And those bills are reflected on the Medicare Summary Notice. There is nothing on any of the Medicare notices that show anything other than the balance due by patient to be $1,525.06.

I had to rate it with a star in order to post, but it should not rate this much.

By the way, the Hospital allowed someone to make a life or death decision about my husband's wishes and that person had an invalid POA. The hospital knew that the patient was married and had children. We were deprived of the right to visit him prior to his death. This hospital did nothing to help my husband and now is trying to get money out of his meager estate to line their own pockets. Their greed and non-caring attitude about the patient makes this place a poor substitute for a Hospital.

I came into the er at Vanderbilt on Saturday may 12 2018. When I came in I was very sick I truly believe that I was dying and probably was. I have no insurance and no income. I had bee to the hospital in the town I live in (Lawrenceburg tn.) only to be told that if I could pay up front they could help me and that I had a hernia go home and deal with it. That was was on Feb 3 2018. I only got sicker and sicker my stomach got bigger and bigger untill I finally came to vandy. They ran the EXACT SAME TESTS that Lawrenceburg ran in there er vandy admitted me and told me it was NOT A HERNIA but was large mass attached to my ovaries. On Monday they removed the mass wich was the size of a basketball and did a complete hysterectomy. The doc said that the mass was filled with puss and that had it busted I would have died. I owe my life to the wonderful people at Vanderbilt I was treated like royalty by every single nurse and doctor I encountered. They are truly doing an amazing job there. I am grateful to have been a patient because they really did save my life when they could have easily turned me away. So THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU AT VANDERBUILT YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!!! THANK YOU FOR SAVING MY LIFE!! sincerely, Amelia Knuckles

Nurses are usually the bomb, doctors ask the same Questions, don't communicate w/ each other & often things go in 1 ear & out the other.
I'm a SCD(sickle cell disease) patient, I've been going here 4 years. Things started grand & mt doctors were proactive, now the only react. I know my body, can complain of pain 4 days & nothing be done. For instance I told them I'm hurting & the medicine they're giving is causing extreme headaches. The offer no solution 2 try something new. Now the stress has me worse off than I started, b/c I now have a fever of 102. It stated rising early I the day I told my doc, he didn't start antibiotics or anything til now 16hrs l8r when at 102.0 when it cld have been done at 99.9-100.4

They bring new insight to what Malpractice means. ...

They bring new insight to what Malpractice means. The things they don t catch when they so obviously should can and does make the difference between life and death. The very clear symptoms apparent to all in the room, ignored, until hindsight 20:20 - should have checked to see why he was coughing so much even though in an assisted coma - turned out there was a leak - they were ignoring - and everyone was commenting on- way to go Vanderbilt. Malpractice of over worked sleepy in the job quote unquote pros. You begin to see why the estimates of prevtable deadly medical mistakes is 100,000 per year. Sloppy level of ignorance does not make good medicine. Appalling when the patients own family raise a flag as to obvious symptoms the doctors and attendees go in to dismiss inky to learn they should not have. Medical Malpractice is what Vanderbilt is all about.

My mother has been a in and out of the hospital here since April 2014. She was diagnosed with cancer and had surgery the whole staff was great! Everytime she is here they treat her and her family with respect, the explain everything to where you can understand what is going and what to exspect! We are from Alabama and will continue to make this trip as many time as needed. If I'm ever in need of a great hospital will surely come to this one! Thanks for all your hard work and I hope that you continue to grow!

This is one of the most difficult hospitals to get treatment at. Not only is the ER dept. a huge let down as I spent nearly 24 hrs in the facility for a slip and fall, but to schedule a followup with a specialty dept. is bordering on ridiculous. I have an 83 yr old mother with dementia who can't speak and doesn't understand what's being said to her and the neurology dept. wouldn't let me schedule an appt. for her, stating that they didn't have her permission to speak to me. How ludicrous is this???
I stated to the scheduler that I would take her some where else for treatment and then hung up on her.

I brought my mother into the hospital at 4:30a.m. to have a brain tumor removed. After dealing with that emotional stress all day, on very little sleep, my wife and I were finally able to fall asleep in my mother's recovery room at about 8:30p.m. Then, at midnight, we are woken by aggressive tapping by Charge Nurse Andrea Hopkins, telling us that either me, my wife, or both of us had to leave my mother's room, because only one person was allowed overnight. Again, she wakes us from a dead sleep at midnight to tell us this. To say I'm not impressed with Andrea's compassion or bedside manner would be a massive understatement. Pathetic.

On a lighter note, Dr. Chambliss did an amazing job on my mother, and Jan, in ICU Patient Services is one of the sweetest and most positive people I've ever met in my life.

10/10 would recommend! I cannot say enough nice things about Vanderbilt University Medical Center! I had surgery to have a very rare type of tumor removed. My surgeon, Dr. Carmen Solorzano, and her entire team were very competent and caring. They checked on me multiple times during my stay in the hospital, and continue to keep tabs on me. I stayed in the surgical intensive care unit in the critical care tower and my experience with everyone (resident physicians, nursing staff, even the housekeeping staff) was positive. There truly is no place quite like Vanderbilt. I'm thankful that I live close to a world class facility. They make my home town's hospital look like it's ran by a circus!

Was there for 6 days and was never given any medication for my infectious disease- a highly contagious infectious disease and another issue. I came in Monday afternoon around 5. I waited 4 hours in the lobby, then was put in a chair in a room, for 3-4 more hours.
Was told I was going to be admitted, they had to get me a room. It's now 5pm Tuesday and im still not in a room.

Took them an hour to bring me back from an ultra sound
I will definately choose another hospital in the future

Day 3 still no room. Haven't had anything to eat since 10 pm last night still have another test to do, before I can eat or drink. Need to schedule testing better . 16 and a half hrs with no food or drink is ridiculous

HIGHLY OVERRATED!! It's a known fact that teaching hospitals CAN BE somewhat of an advantage, but this place is living off that myth and borrowed time. First it's FILTHY! Wanna feel like dirt scraped off of scum, go here. Want to feel insignificant & belittled by a bunch of pompous brats that think they're better than you, go here. If you want compassion, comfort & actual medical care GO ELSEWHERE! You'll never spend less than 8 or9 hours in their ER, it takes WEEKS OR EVEN MONTHS to get appointments, surgery or any other scheduled event. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND FINDING SOMEWHERE A LITTLE LESS WRAPPED UP IN THEIRSELVES WHERE PATIENT/PROVIDER 1 ON1 ACTUALLY EXISTS. IT'S LIKE MASS PRODUCTION & THAT'S DEADLY WHEN COMBINED WITH MEDICINE!

Dr hunter in the children's pediatric clinic is the most ignorant person I've ever met. My 8month old was having stomach pains, and instead of doing an ultrasound, or telling us to monitor it more ( like the other dozen doctors we saw said) to see if there was something going on, no she assumes the worst case scenario, that my baby had a rare seizure disorder and needed to be admitted and have an eeg done. So a simple dr visit turned into an unpleasant and painful overnight stay. Of course the test came back clean & they couldn't figure out what was causing her pain and did nothing for us. Overall the hospital was okay, but dr hunter on the 8th floor Peds ward is the dumbest dr we have ever encountered and because of her I am finding a new pediatrician office for my child.

I have been seeing many specialists there for years, some better than others, I have noticed a change in the last several years for the worse, I have been recently hospitalized 2 times in last 6 months, both occasions were supposed to be overnight, they both turned into 9-14 day stays. While some of it can t be blamed on the physicians there, a lot of it can & their lack of ability to think outside the textbook knowledge is a huge concern, the nursing care for the most part is ok, they are completely under staffed for a facility of that size. I was to have an ultrasound ordered stat early afternoon & didn t receive it until 4am, if that s considered stat I would hate to see the person that s just waiting to have one. The lack of response from anyone in administration or management & their willingness to address issues when brought to their attention is a COMPLETE JOKE, where is your accountability in all this? You re dealing with peoples lives here. I bring my issues to people for them to be handled, I have tried to be nice but at this point that s done. My opinion stay as far away from there as you can.

Radiology Department

Radiology Department

The surgeons were wonderful. They were personal, knowledgeable and welcoming.
My husband's main nurse was pretty nice and proficient.

The one star is for a particular nurse who was negligent and rude.

When she came into my husband's area she did not introduce herself. She started opening packages and placing heart monitor patches on his chest and instead of throwing the packaging in the trash she threw everthing on top of him like he was the trash can. She pulled out his IV while trying to clean up blood that spilled on his arm from a bad stick. Then she stuck him on the top of his hand to draw blood without a warning. He yelled when she did that. As soon as she had drawn blood for labs, the main nurse was told that labs were not needed for him. Really!!! Everything this nurse did was rude, rushed and negligent. She was very uncaring towards my husband as a patient and as a human being. She could have apologized for her mistakes.

Another nurse did not stay to assist my husband with using the urinal, after his procedure which had him somewhat incoherent.

My husband's overalls visit was pretty good, it's just these circumstances that never should have happened.

I ve been here since Saturday and seen a different doc part of some group and each make promises to do things and never any orders. No integrity and the review about neglect and lack of seriousness for other testing and pain management is accurate. Too much artifacts seen in the MRI, CT plus X-RAY to finD the nerves that are PINCHED, so they want to give me pills that take a week up to a month to help with nerve pain.Look up Lyrica or Gabapentin I ve had both since I have been here they changedvto Lyrica at my request to the first blonde pain management lady which thinks my splanich nerve (maybe misspelled). The whole point of the L4,5 and S1 revision plus L3-4 fusion with cadaver graft and fixing my scoliosis was to get out of pain, NO MORE PILLS. Came here after these two major surgeries on 2/1 & 2/2/18 because of severe groin pain and all they can do is not do what they say and make excuses why neuro hasn t been by but they ve looked at my MRI and CT which shows some fluid on my spine. They kept me here but no nerve testing or laparoscopic to find the area that s causes this awful burning lightening pain radiating into my groin that prevents me from sitting but slamming my insurance. The young girl with pain management belittled my surgery and doesn t even know Lyrica and Gabapentin take week to months to treat nerve pain yet I m not wanting to eat pills. I want to be able to sit in a car and go out to eat with my significant other and not have lightening striking on one side of groin with numbness and my legs are burning yet they can t feel it so it doesn t exist and you don t get sleep for pain even with sleeping pills. It s like they re milking my insurance plans and NOT GIVING THE CARE THEYD WANT TO RECEIVE. Vandy use to be a good place, now full of excuses and no integrity and only making you suffer when I can suffer at home or another facility. They ve charged Insurance for mri and CT so I can t go anywhere else and get another yet they aren t treating my issue as it gets worse. They block you from talking to management to. Go somewhere else if you want to be treated in a way they would if you. I ve been a nurse 18 years and St. Thomas and Vandy are worst ever an no accountability for neglect.

UPDATE 0630 on 2/13/18 called operator requested to speak with patient care administrator last night at 2140. He never showed. Operator called this morning spoke to Mike today s patient care administrator to tell her Jeremy (last nights patient care administrator) told him he DID speak to me and i requested to speak to someone this morning. That is a lie! He never spoke to me but the charge nurse Barbara on round wing said he cane to this floor to speak to the on call about me when I told her I had him paged last night and never seen him. Clearly zero integrity through this whole facility. There is a lady I spoke to on the phone about 1615 (4:15pm) yesterday that said she s coming this morning but Jeremy nor mike we re involved in that conversation, plus I had Jeremy paged for another reason last night. Patient neglect and stereotyping is the ONLY thing consistent in this facility besides Insurance milking. This facility is set up to block complaints and then they try to discredit the patient and make negative assumptions to justify their actions. Record everything they say here to protect you and your reputation. Watch how many times they lie and orders aren t changed and I m talking bladder spasm/overactive medication plus asked to increase zanaflex a muscle relaxer to three times a day. No sedation and no reason to not increase it when you can touch the areas having spasms not controlled by two day regiment.

From intake to pre-op to surgery to recover to in-patient care, everyone I met was thoroughly professional while being cheerful, kind and encouraging. Specifically, the anesthesia team of Dr. Travis Marshall, the surgical team of Dr. Gregory Polkowski and the patient care team on Round Wing 6th floor exceeded expectations in every aspect. Kudos to the VUMC family.

7 hours in the E.R. to be told I had a skin rash. Then verbally abused by the security officers about leaving to go outside and coming back in because I had to grab a charger. Was told I wouldn't be allowed back in If I went out again. They won't even let you leave before hitting you with the bill expecting full payments immediately!

chronicle of a disappointment !!

chronicle of a disappointment !!

the day of yesterday 01/19/2019 at 8:57 pm product of a strong pain in the abdominal area I went to the adult emergency of the recognized vanderbilt medical center, looking for a solution to my problem considering that I had expected a week with treatment for general pain, (ibuprofen, advil, tylenol) at the time of entering the institution made the usual entry process and then I went to a room there, after waiting a few minutes, a nurse approached me I filled out my insurance documents and at that moment I asked questions of the same, satisfied with the response proceeded to continue with the process, then another nurse arrived who made blood samples and urinated, after that I stayed in the room for approximately 3 hours Until I went to ask what was going on? because nobody came, because nobody told me anything, I continued with my abdominal pain, the response of the staff was that the people in charge of doing the ultrasound there were only 2 in the whole hospital and they were attending the rooms and the emergency, all this in the "Recognized" vanderbilt medical center, after 4 hours of waiting I did the ultrasound and went back to the room, 2 hours later a resident approached me who did not look me in the eyes once to tell me that what they saw was not important I went to my house to take (Tylenon and Advil) really ?? 6 hours
waiting in an emergency so that your only solution was to go to my house to take analgesics? I wonder someone can believe that in a week of pain I had not already taken that? It is incredible that the only answer was to go home! and go to a gastroenterologist that the consultation is in 1 month, according to the "recognized" vanderbilt medical center, I must take analgesics for a month because they can not tell me anything else !! disappointed of the attention and the innacion of same proceed to go to the office of payments (even with my pain intact) where I am told that I must pay a quantity of money which had already asked the first person who made the process registration in the room, and his response regarding my insurance had been different so I decided to continue with the process, but the truth is that it was not so, I had to pay a large sum of money, for a mistreatment of my person , with 6 hours of waiting to decide that my solution was (tylenol) remember in the "recognized" medical center vanderbilt .. there was no help, there was no support, there was no solution !! Here I am in my house with necessary money lost, with a great sadness and with my pain intact in the abdomen! It was a big disappointment !!

postscript: the 6 blood containers that were extracted, were on the table in the room, after 6 hours no one touched them, I guess it was not important!

patient who continues with abdominal pain.

I walked in with a toothache. Nothing was done. I was told they do not perform extractions. They sent me a bill. I am not paying that bill. You literally told me that you cannot do anything for me and did nothing and then I left. I am not giving you any money.

My husband had a severe accident on July 4th. Thank goodness they took him to Vanderbilt Medical Center!! Even though the Covid virus was rampant in Nashville, they were very professional and had the screening as they should have. They took such good care of my husband! The whole staff, nurses, doctors and surgeon were the best. They treated him with care and respect. I truly believe, he couldn't have gotten the care anywhere that he was given there. And the surgeon, Alex Jahangir did the extensive surgery and we were so thankful we had him! I feel that they should all be commended for the great job they did in a difficult situation as far as the Covid virus they were dealing with!!! Thank you all!!!

I would like to clarify up front that my review of VUMC is based on several interactions with this health care facility over several years, and not on one unfortunate experience. This is truly the most incompetent organization I've ever dealt with.

The first two times I went was in two separate years for annual physical exams. Each time, it was a major hassle to get the lab results from the physical. Every time I would have to call to talk with someone about it, the person I needed to speak with was never available.

My wife went there for a procedure early this year and was billed for something that was actually covered by insurance. She went ahead and paid it, not realizing it was covered at that moment. Major mistake. It took Vanderbillt three months to refund the money, and it was no small amount. She had to talk to them numerous times and explain the same thing over and over and over again before it was finally refunded. Each time, they would agree that the refund would be sent, yet they just were not able to get it right. Each time, when she would call again to check on it, it would turn out that they just hadn't done it; someone had always dropped the ball.

My latest experience was my third (and last) physical exam at VUMC in March 2019. Ever since that visit, they have been sending me a $50 medical bill, though a physical is covered 100% by my insurance, as it is by all insurance in the U.S., as required by federal law. But Vanderbilt continued to send the bill month after month, though I continually talked with their phone representatives and they admitted that I was receiving this bill because they miscoded the procedure. By the time they actually fixed the coding issue and resubmitted it to my insurance, my insurer apparently thought it was a new charge, so I'm continuing to receive this $50 invoice, which I'm not paying, of course.

I fully understand that human errors are going to occur in any organization, but for as long as this has been going on, I can only be left to believe that this is an intentional profit motive just to see how many people will actually pay these bills to make them leave you alone.

Take my word for it, it's not even worth getting something as simple as a physical exam at this place. I will never come back to another Vanderbilt facility, even if it's an emergency and it's the closest facility. The hassle with this bunch is just not worth it.

I have always received wonderful care here. I recommend their ER if you need emergency assistance. They are quick, caring, and knowledgeable. If affordability is an issue, they have options to help with that too.

Dr. Matthew Resnick is my Urologist for 2 different types of cancers. He is the Best of the Best, has a great bed side manner and makes you feel very comfortable when explaining what he wants to do or the review of the test results. He really cares about his patients, has the most upbeat attitude that I have ever had for cancer treatment professionals. He makes you feel like there is hope, regardless where you are in the cycle of treatment or diagnosis. I would never leave his office for another Urologist.
