They have a good tour to describe the viking ships and how they were made
Very interesting museum about the vikings, their ships, as well as maritime archeology. You can leisurely walk around to look at the ships or take part in various handcrafts. The rebuild ships using old methods and technologies are really spectacular.
Best to visit in the summertime when they are working outdoors with the boats. The Museum are not to big but if you have kids they will love it.
Absolutely loved this. The amount of work and dedication that went into preserving this very important piece of history is absolutely amazing. I went at the tail end of november so, unfortunately, they were not offering the boat tours during that part of the season. Still loved the experience and will definitely be back to do the boat tour during that part of the season.
Great place to learn about Vikings. Good to spend here all day.
This is the place to go if you are interested in the Vikings. The main focus is on the authentic old ships found in the bay here, but there are also several replicas that are actually afloat, as well as tons of information about the ships, and the museum as a whole is very well laid out..
Definitely worth a visit. Even outside there are many exciting experiences.
To reach from Copenhagen by public transport (train and on foot). A must for fans of the Viking Age and history comes to life here. The museum shows five Viking ships that were recovered and restored at Skuldelev in the Roskildefjord. Replica Viking ships are anchored in the museum harbor and invite you to a kapper trip.
A short stroll through the town rounds off the whole and definitely have a look at the Roskilde Domkirke. The Roskilde Domkirke is a powerful brick cathedral and burial place for many Danish monarchs in alabaster and marble tombs. Rulers from all over the world (but mainly from Europe) had their body length marked on the royal column.
This is one of a must visit to Roskilde, its very educational and interesting place to learn about Viking and its ships. The museum are divided into several sites and fun for children to build ships, trying different kind of knots, identifying trees suitable for building ships, learning vast types of ships and the name for each ships. I enjoyed and appreciates the efforts of the museum preserving the ancient vikings ships and its history. The special runic alphabet is very interesting!
Great place! Committed employees and a cool interactive exhibition for children where they can steer 2 Viking ships through a storm. The kids had a FED trip!
Wonderful museum. The ships are beautiful, but the presentation is also stunning: Danish design left and right, the exhibition hall was custom built and its architectural elements such as the huge window front towards the waterside refer to the ships.
Very informative and fun exhibition: E.g. you can dress up in viking clothes and have your picture taken in a model ship loaded with trading goods. Large gift shop with lots of interesting stuff.
On top there's the boat yard outside where you can watch craftsmen building modern copies of the ships (experimental archeology). You can book tours to sail on one of them to complete the experience. LOVED it!
Historic environment. Living workshop where visitors can roam freely in the environment.
Interesting and instructive. Keep an eye on the times of the guided sawmill visit: they are few in English, and they are worth it. Stop at the string store: you might have the chance to see how the Vikings made the ropes!
Very enjoyable museum. Watching and interacting with craftsmen who were building ships using the same techniques as the ancient vikings was quite a treat. The museum itself was informative and educational. And it was fun watching kids playing viking games in the yard in front.
That's an interesting museum!! There are 5 original Vikings boat and you can learn about this culture. In the garden there are done Game form play!
How often do you get to dress up like a viking and row a ship of the era out to sea? Not very. Such a fun experience!
Those who are interested in the Viking Age will find genuine, incomplete ships from around 1000 to 1100 here. The wood for this was cut about 1000 years ago. I love that. You can also take part in many activities. (Woodworking, knots etc.) The museum is worth a half-day trip.
Great work on experimental archeology! The reconstruction looks amazing and the thematic content of viking culture was arranged neatly. The augmented reality of sailing with viking ships also feels great. It is a shame for not being able to be here at summer for sailing with the reconstructed viking ship.
Small museum but very well done, there is a projection room where they transmit in various languages the story of how Viking ships were used, and how they were recovered and restored. There is a small wardrobe of Viking clothes where children and adults can dress and vote in the reconstructed ships. Outside there is a small shipyard where it is shown how Viking ships were built and with the possibility of participating in them.
Nice and educational museum. For young and old. I myself thought it was great how they imitated those ships in the traditional way of a Viking. And also how they cut the wood. Very good job
EXCEPTIONAL place! It is worth the trip to Denmark alone. In half a day you can see both the museum and the shipyard .. p.s. even the gift shop contains quality books and material relating to Viking ships at affordable prices (unlike other museums in the area).
Nice museum facing Roskilde Fjord. The museum itself with partially reconstructed boats from centuries ago is not that big but there are also plenty of hands on activities that keep young children engaged for a while. We spent there several hours. Nice cafeteria with reasonable food. Except in the museum building itself, dogs are allowed.
This place is really amazing. We took our four active boys there and they had so much fun. Lunch at the cafe that serves authentic Viking recipes was beautiful and the short film about the museum was just the right length to hold their attention so they knew what they were looking at. But they play area with the dress up and Vikings boats was just the best. Highly recommend this place!
It's a Great Place where you can Row your own Viking ship
Not much to do . A little dissapointed and not worth the money - too expensive.
There are 5 wrecked and incomplete boat (actually only the hull of the boat) to see at the price of 150dkk (115dkk for stuendts) that's literally it. Just go there for the harbor but not the Museum.
It looks so beautiful around! You can actually try and row as the vikings did it many years ago!
We really enjoyed our trip to see the five viking ships which have been brought up from the sea bed, restored and displayed in this lovely building. Make sure you start with the movie in your own language in the cinema. This sets the scene and will ensure you fully understand the effort it took from 1962 through 1975 to get the material above water and then the years of careful preservation that took place thereafter. Fascinating. And the walk through Roskilde was a lovely visit in itself.
The museum has made a lot of entertainment for families with children, which was very good. The exhibition itself could be done better, compared to similar permanent exhibitions. The film shown about the Viking Age and Viking ships was short, good and informative.
very informative, impressive collection of viking ships old and new, continually making new ones using traditional methods.
Very informative and interactive, can go out for a sail in a Viking ship replica for $20.
The cafe food is an experience not to miss.
Take the bus to go from Central station, it's a long walk.
The only complaint I have is it's a fairly small museum and the admission price is high.
Cool and wildly exciting museum, where you are allowed to try things.
Beautiful place. You can relax. See Viking boats.
Absolutely not worth it. Really a mockery. A few boats and a few texts, more about making boats. All very disappointing. If this museum had been in the Netherlands it would have gone bankrupt after a year.
Admission relatively expensive, but various activities on offer
Fascinating history and reconstruction of Viking and other ships from a similar era.
Museum with exhibitions on Viking ships found underwater, along with efforts to document and reproduce techniques used in making them thousands of years ago.
Dropped into Copenhagen just to visit this museum, was defo worth the trip!!
Museum self is average but the viking crafts and the vikingship are awesome!
Good information and exciting activities for the young people. In an adequate amount.
Very interesting to see how the old Viking ships are built and how they were used.
I give a 5 for the presentation, the service, the place, the reconstruction of events, the friendliness of the staff. To visit with family. It's rewarding because we come out with another idea of Viking, different and human. I really appreciated !
Getting here is easy from Copenhagen, about 30 minutes by train and then about 15 minutes on foot. The museum is fine, very interesting with its boats and history. To finish for the little ones or not, the possibility of putting on Viking outfits to get on a model of Viking ships and feel Viking for a while.
Outside the museum there is an area of workshop workshops where they explain to you how the boats made, carved the different parts of the trees and what they used each part of the tree in the construction of the boat, the fabrics they used for the candles and some crafts. The whole set I found very nice to spend a morning or an afternoon in a relaxing environment to be next to a lake where you can lie down and soak your feet and relax for a while watching sailing Viking ships.
A great place to feed the imagination and learn. Recommend going when the boats are in the water.
Small but interesting place, kids can play vikings and learn how to write in runes. You can also watch a film about vikings
Always interesting to see and learn the viking culture.
An amazing experience! The entrance is included in the Copenhagen card, so we spontaneously decided to have a gasp. We stayed for two hours, especially watching a viking boat replica being built. There is much to not only see but also to touch and try out. Highly recommended!
Amazing experience. If you're interested to learn about Viking Age ships, this is the place to go. Five original ships are on display. The original parts are cleverly attached to a modern, minimalist skeleton, to give you the best impression of the complete ship. If you instead want the most lively impression possible, just walk into their harbour filled with handmade replicas or watch one being built before your eyes. Even sailing along with one of the ships is possible. This will cost you considerably more, but what you pay is used to support this project which amazingly blends practical and historical research to keep our knowledge of a past age alive.
Guided tour in English was good. Hands on activities for children. It was interesting to see a ship being built. The restaurant is expensive but the portions are quite big (lots of cabbage salad). We shared a lunch meal.
The rich history of the Viking Heritage of Denmark is depicted here
A historically interesting place, offers something for every age group.
Very cool museum. Really enjoyed the historical craftsmanship of the shipbuilders!
As for the content it is 5 stars, unfortunately the price is overwhelming, if you earn in dkk, you don't have to worry.
Excellent museum with affordable activities for the kids as well. We spent 4 hours here.
Great time - worth the visit. Check out the video and see how they found these ships and where. Impressive!
Nice to see how they spent 25 years reconstructing 5 Viking ships!
Very interactive. Learnt loads of stuff. Brilliant for kids.
Very interesting, you can see authentic Viking ships, there are people working and doing replicas of boats. I loved it.
Extraordinary museum hostings the remains of 5 viking ships discovered in the '60s near Roskilde. It represents a fantastic testimony for the ship biulding and sea faring of Norse men amazingly preserved after so many years. There is a big parking area in front of the museum, but itcan be already full at noon.
Very entertaining and educational. Here you can see 5 Viking ships taken from the bottom of a fjord and their active replicas. Workshops for children, boats under construction, etc.
I love this place. They have done a fantastic job of presenting the story of reclaiming the ships from the water, as well as recent efforts in experimental archaeology to recreate a ship and sail it, so be sure to go downstairs where the restrooms are to see and read about it. What a monumental, interdisciplinary effort! With just scraps, they rebuilt the ships. But if you're not into history, science, or archaeology, it could be not your thing.
Take one of the free Guided tours (in English) if you have the time, you will lead a lot more than what you can read in the signs. The docents have an academic knowledge about it all - restoration techniques, history, and more - so it's worth it. There are also booths outside where you can try your hand at blacksmithing, wood working, and playing outdoor Viking games. There's also a cafe with Viking food, though I didn't eat there.
All in all so worth it.
Very interesting museum with extensive information and sights.
Fantastic place! Watching the ships being built was great. Well worth a visit
Ok, but would be nice with seating for older people
Though we visited during the winter the center still has much to offer. Extremely friendly and informative guide available in English made our experience unforgettable. My daughter and I learned much about Roskilde and the ways of the ancient Norse peoples.
A great place for summer fun for the whole family in the summer. They have a lot of outdoor exhibits that are open in the summer (but may close in the winter) and games / activities for the kids. If you get there early, you can sign up for a cruise in the viking ship (extra fee). We got there in the afternoon so they were all booked, but we saw multiple families and boats come in and it looked like so much fun. The ships and museum itself is good, but not fantastic, so I would probably give this place a 3 star post for the winter time.
Seeing the ships themselves may be disappointing for some, however I did find it very interesting to understand how they were built and also read the exhibits about how the Vikings lived.
It is exciting to see the old Viking ships and see how they defended Roskilde in his day. But they had to split it up a bit so that you didn't have to pay 130kr for the entrance but a smaller price and that you could then pay extra for the tour and boat trip. Exciting but not very big.
Small and beautiful museum. A great experience and great workshops. Boats recovered from the seabed are a great treasure.
Very nice Museum you can sail on a real ship and even the film can be watched in Dutch.
Visit with our 3 children, great full of beautiful memories, beautiful reconstruction of ships, shop at reasonable prices thank you
With the equivalent of 17 admission definitely not a bargain, but it's worth it !!!
To see how a shipbuilder builds a Viking ship or how the ships salvaged from those ships are put together again. Strong museum. Thumbs up!!!
Oh yes. For children more than enough activities are included ...
