A small nice museum that you can get through very quickly, even if you read and look at everything. Depending on the season, there are still a few activities outside for young and old. Quite ok but no reason just to go to this city.
VERY wheelchair unfriendly building, not worth going to if you you want to get inside the building. It's possible to get in through the back/basement, this allows access to only one section of the museum. Surrounding areas outside generally ok for wheelchairs.
People in wheelchairs don't have to pay however, and museum staff were appropriately embarrassed and apologetic.
An excellent presentation of the subject matter. Engaging, excellent day out for all of the family. Great food on site with the Cafe Knarr. Something Denmark should be very proud of from the recovery of the vessels, their preservation and study and the continued excellent exhibition available at Roskilde.
Excellent, it gives us a great idea of how the Vikings sailed at the time, with original objects and ships!
A really interesting place where you get the story of your country and its people in place for a really exciting time. A friendly and welcoming staff. It is recommended to attend as part of a group and then get a tour.
Very interesting visit. We understand everything about these ships there construction, use, capacities. Many workshops for children (painting shields, learning the calligraphy of runes, ...) but it is paying extra. The 'Nordic boat' tour is worth the detour (not that expensive). The cafeteria is an interpretation of the food of the time. (original cheap)
In short, super interesting. I did not put 5 stars for the cost of 'near' (workshop, and boats)
The museum itself is not a must to do. The free outside area is enough to catch the whole picture of Viking Boats.
Superb visit, all of the permanent exhibition translated into French. We learn a lot about ships and Viking culture. Very nice place and friendly staff. Worth a visit.
The museum does not take more than an hour but going there is a must!
Always worth a visit. Very nice exhibition for all ages
Nice layout, with plenty to do and see outside and inside. The guide told us a lot and that gives more feeling to what you see. Also nice workshops for smaller children. We skipped lunch because of 40 minutes waiting time in restaurant.
Great historic place. The only one in the world of this kind. A must see in Denmark.
Spectacular setting for the reconstructed Viking ships. Very informative, and really makes you appreciate the seafaring genius of the Danes.
Always a nice place to look by, "The Sea Stallion" is always impressive & and in the open workshops, you can see other boats being built in the "Old" way ... Check It Out: o)
The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde is the national museum of Denmark dedicated to this type of boat, sea voyages and shipbuilding techniques in prehistoric and medieval times.
The museum owes its name to 5 ships of the Viking era which were deliberately sunk in Skuldelev, in the Roskilde fjord, in about 1070, with the aim of blocking an important commercial street and protecting the city (which at the time was the Danish capital) from enemy attacks from the sea. These boats, known as Navi di Skuldelev, were recovered in 1962. Their importance is also due to the fact that they are 5 different types of ship, from cargo to warship, including the only knarr ever recovered in good condition. conditions.
The museum is not free but it is also very nice to look at externally. In fact, many times it is possible to find boats moored for restoration.
An okay museum, but very little content. Way over priced like $15 per person. The story about the narrow channels and the harbor blocking is interesting as the restoration process.
The Vikingships are exhibited in a concrete building. Although it is built in the 1980 s and therefore is reasonably modern, they dit not include any elevators. So for disabled people this is almost completely inaccesible. You can see the ships; for that you can get inside through a backdoor only for the staff and disabled people. You only need to notify someone in the museumshop. Which is on the 1st Floor. Which can only be reached using the stairs.
The outdoor part of the museum is nice, but the workmen are not that talkative. They should take an example to the re-enactors of the archaeological themepark Archeon in the Netherlands. They tend to explain a lot of what they re doing as soon as visitors come to see them work.
I think that for families this museum is a lot more fun.
The one star is for the excellent food, by the way.
Here you go. There is a nice atmosphere and it is possible to buy a ticket to get out and sail in a copy of a Viking ship. Their beer from Herslev brew house is fantastic.
The museum is located in Roskilde, a small town 20 minutes from Copenhagen by train. The museum is very beautiful and interesting. Mandatory stop for those going to Copenhagen. The museum has two parts:
The external part which includes a bar, educational workshops for children, the shipyard and the port where you will find reproductions of Viking ships built with methods and tools of the time
The inner part where the museum shop is located, a video room and the remains of the 5 Viking ships brought to light in 1962. Being able to see the remains of the ships up close is exciting. I recommend visiting this museum to everyone.
Nice little museum. Here you can see the Viking ship and the history of these, as well as experience the sea stallion so is a faith and sail capable copy of an old Viking ship located at the museum in Roskilde harbor
Cool place but a bit more child centered when we were expecting. The restored ships look amazing and are very cool to see.
There is almost nothing to do on a rainy day. All workshops were closed which means that we could only look at skeletons of 5 decayed small ships in around half an hour and that was it. I was really disappointed.
A beautiful sea side museum dedicated to the Vikings. It has 5 viking ships which were recovered from the sea bed. The museum has a lot of information about the Viking way of life, culture and traditions. There is a free introductory 15 minute movie shown, register at the reception for this. There is a cafe on site as well as outside, and there are boat trips taken out in summer in viking model boats made to the exact scale in exactly the same manner. Totally worth a visit
The museum is only interesting to see the skeletons of Viking ships, the exteriors are better
It is very interesting, millenary boats. We liked a lot.
Very exciting place. They convey the story in a very exciting way.
Very great museum. A lot to experience for children too.
Lots of beautiful craftsmanship and real life sailing experience
Very interesting exhibition on shipbuilding from the Viking Age. There is a shipyard where Viking-style shipbuilding is carried out with original tools.
Interesting exposition and story of vikings provided by the local guide. Ride on a viking ship is a nice experiance.
Very well made museum with very informative tour (with me in English), where you feel that the guide himself is involved in the production of Viking Ship replicas. Additional programs (crafts) for the kids have also greatly appreciated!
super cool museum can be recommended if you are interested in Vikings
Graceful ships in a glorious setting. Easy to get to by car. Not very crowded on a Tuesday morning. Many interactive displays for children AND adults. Working boat building on site. Probably 50 recreations in the water and out. About $10 per person. Interpretive signage could be better.
Great place to visit. Very interesting especially if you've watched the TV show, Vickings.
The kids will also have fun as there workshops like jewellery making and boat building to keep them occupied. If I remember correctly, the prices were very reasonable. Overall, I'd recommend a visit if you're nearby.
Really does not worth a visit and taking the trip from Copenhagen. This museum only worth a visit if you are crazy about the history of Vikings ship manufacturing! It was a waste of time and money. The entry fee (150 Krones per person) is very expensive for such a limited museum.
Great museum: educational, complete and very participatory.
Extremely exciting visit and absolutely wild to sail with a Viking ship on the fjord.
great way to spend a few hours - the story of five recovered viking vessels conserved and then recreated using traditional techniques - amazing stories and really informative - kids can dress up - access to the workshops and to the harbour - we didn't eat but the menu looked very interesting inspired by Viking fayre
To visit the museum of Viking ships more precisely 5 found in the sea where they had been sunk to protect the port. Restored and put on display in the museum with a short video explaining the time of finding and restoration
Really interesting and interactive experience, fun for all the family. Kids get to make their own viking ships with real saws and hammers, adults too (model size ) Worth a visit
Museum dedicated to the Viking world. Correct It could be wider and more audiovisual, but it is good
A very interesting place for all ages! However, it's extremely windy there even in the summertime, so I don't recommend the viking boat ride offered at the museum. I was really excited to go on it until I saw the black water and huge waves..
The most fun thing about the museum is seeing the workshop where they build ships using the old techniques. A fantastic place.
A great museum with wonderful display of ships from the Viking Era. Great View accross the museum.
Great information on the building of viking boats with live demonstrations of construction techniques. More than just a museum. Be sure to make use of the guided tours.
Several Viking boats displayed. The museum offers a storytelling for visitors, although I've witnessed that in Danish language only. There is a corner for children where they can play some historic games and dress as a Viking.
Amazing museum. With a treasure of real viking war ships
This museum is a real gem. You can access it by taking a nice walk from the city to the same sea line. The museum has an unbeatable location and shows the process of building a Viking ship and life in the fjord in Viking times, along with a magnificent exhibition of real remains. They offer a multitude of activities for children and adults to learn from the life of the Vikings and their boats, restaurants and a good shop is not lacking. I recommend your visit one hundred percent.
We had booked a course which was canceled due to illness instead we got a guided tour for 39 children ... Puha it's hard to keep the concentration
Nice exhibition around Viking ships, but especially lacks something that can catch the children's interest.
good but it could be better. if I knew it was I wouldn't go.
One of the most amazing.museums I have ever visited. From artisans working on building modern replicas of Viking boats to examples of the types of wood and ropes they used, we spent 3 hours here and couldn't see it all.
The museum is about a 10-minute walk downhill from the cathedral and about 20 min from the station.
The museum cost 390 kr with the Copenhagen card for 4 people, they make a 25% discount and in my opinion it is more worth it if you go with children because you have craft workshops, (paying) you can go on a Viking boat (paying also) and there are several games for children. You can see several reproductions of boats of different types and how they do it, blacksmithing, carpentry, etc. Then there are the remains of 3 ships they found and a souvenir shop.
A super beautiful and living museum.
There are really many things to look at here. You can see how a Viking ship is built from scratch in the same way and with the same tools as it was built in the Viking Age. It takes an afternoon to get through this whole museum.
It is easily reached by train from Copenhagen.E 'the old downtown capitale.Da see the majestic cattedrale.Il museum boasts some original specifications Viking ships who wants to can take a ride on boats vichinghe.Il place though is to put magico.Assolutamente on the agenda if you go too Danimarca.Adatto children.
Beautiful preservation of viking ships complete with interactive exhibits.
If you fancy a trip out from Copenhagen, Roskilde's Viking Ship Museum is well worth venturing out for. The museum is a short walk from the train station and you can walk through a lovely park to get there. You can catch a free guided tour (in several languages) which was well thought out and really interesting, lasts about thirty minutes.
For me The Viking Museum par excellence.
The entrance is 150 crowns for an adult and from there the following are 140 crowns.
To consider that they have the informative brochure in Spanish.
You are placed a bracelet as an entrance with which you enter the museum building itself. The rest of the enclosure, admission is free.
It has an area of booths that teach Viking weapons and shields, clothing materials, ropes, fabrics and carpentry where the old Viking ships and drakkar are playing.
The museum is located in the port with what has a small dock where it exposes in the water several Viking ships of different sizes, very reproductions achieved.
We had the opportunity to see an exhibition of the use of weapons.
Already in the museum they tell you the history of the Vikings, the exhibition of the archaeological remains that they have found in the excavations, how they have found them, an explanatory film, souvenir shop, the possibility of getting into 2 Viking ships ... very Curious, didactic and interactive for both adults and children.
It also has a picnic area and a restaurant where the food is well priced, quantity and rich.
Visit highly recommended.
Enjoyed this museum, especially the explanations of the types of rope and trees and how the ships were constructed. The actual ships were also very interesting but as I had somebody with a wheelchair it was very difficult to get access to all areas. The modern building with 'protected status' was on different levels, connected by steps with no lift. Unless your wheelchair can be lifted with the occupant in it, or the person can walk up stairs, then the main attraction is only partially accessible. This is why it only achieved 4 stars. Great museum, disappointing access arrangements.
Cool place to learn a bit more about viking history, especially for the area around Roskilde. You can see the remainings of five ships, and can get a feeling of traveling on one by exploring a replica.
Excellent museum very educational. A must to understand the means of transport of Vikings
Great!!! A great day out at the Viking Museum in Roskilde.
Very interesting how people mourn Viking ships here. Sailing on the fjord is highly recommended. The cards are only booked up quickly so come early.
The summer is probably the time when the Viking Ship Museum is at its best, with its outdoors activities and its huge windows allowing in such an amount of daylight it almost feels like you are right on the beach just outside.
The exhibits are impressive and well preserved. The explanations are comprehensive and very informative. Additionally, a video can be watched in the audiovisual room for general information about the ships' history.
A great way to spend one or two hours in Roskilde.
The museum is very nice. It has many activities to do with children. It is outdoors, but it is a bit expensive. About forty euros a couple. Children free. If you have them clear.
Nice place with the opportunity to see Viking ships being built, you can be allowed to build a little out of wood or visit the Viking Museum and see the old ships we have found and have a beautiful sea view.
Very nice museum with lot of outdoor activities for children and adults as well.
Not really my thing. But it should be fun for those who wanna know more about vikings .
Nice museum, very interesting, but quite small. Children also have a lot of fun and opportunities to play.
Very interesting museum, we learned for example that viking's helmets didn't have horns on them. Also lovely hostel and city.
Very well done museum on Viking ships, given the excellent reviews I was expecting something more
