UMC Health System Review

If I could give 0 stars on this review I would. I want to warn any parents of Texas Tech students to not let your child go to this ER. My son is 19 and a freshman at Tech, and we are 5 hours away. He went to the ER with vomiting and diarrhea. He waited over 4 hours to get into a room, so laid on the floor in the waiting room going back and forth to the restroom. Once finally called back to a room, they waited at least an hour again. His girlfriend had to go get someone. They came in and started an IV, but never came back to add the medicine. Again, his girlfriend had to go get someone. At this point, once finally seeing a doctor hours later, it is decided he needs a stomach X-ray and Cat Scan! His symptoms are of a stomach bug with no fever! All that came back negative, of course, and he was released with prescriptions for nausea and diarrhea, what he should have just gotten in the first place, like 9 hours later from his arrival. I believe this staff saw 2 college kids away from their parents, so decided to rack up some bills. And believe me, even with insurance, it was a HUGE bill. Yes, my son is considered an adult, but had I been there, I would not have approved these tests that were not needed. I complained, the medical director of the ER reviews it, and decides the tests were all necessary- of course he did! The hospital wants the money. So I paid it, unlike so many people that go to this county hospital and can t pay a dime. So those that can are stuck with bills like this. Hard lesson learned- my review is definitely not the only bad one of this ER. I notified Texas Tech and also our insurance company, as I believe this place is scamming them as well. Please have your child go somewhere else.

This place is horrible, staff is rude, my wife had to wait forever while she was having chest pains and heart palpitations. The nurse doing EKG's didn't wear gloves. Some staff has there mask on incorrectly. It's supposed to cover your nose and mouth, the waiting room was full no empty seats no wipes to wipe anything down, No social distancing was being enforced. Also while here a man that was just released fell outside and was very shaky all they did was tell him to sit down until someone came to get him. I would not come to this hospital if I was dying.

Bad place to go to get seen that's all that u get is seen maybe 6 or more hours later it seems like cause u have Medicaid they donthelp u like they should and the rudeness of drs omg I don't recommend umc I would give it half star if I could

THERE IS LITERALLY A MAN SITTING IN THE LOBBY ROOM WITH BOTH FEET BURNED AND SKIN COMING OFF. THEY BEEN HERE SINCE 10 PM AND STILL IN THE WAITING ROOM. I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND THIS. SKIN COMING OFF HIS FEET...WOWOWOW

Horrible horrible experience. Never have had to deal with such rude doctors in my life!!! The nursing staff was awesome, but skip this place if you care about yourself or loved ones!!!

I went in the afternoon of October 16th in septic shock. They saved my life and were extraordinary with my service dog Dexter. I was hospitalized for three weeks and the care at the hospital was excellent!

Took my daughter in last night due to severe stomach pains. This isn't the first time she's been seen for this. Only thing they did was the same exact test that comes back with the same result nothing. Instead of doing something else they simply told her they didn't know what was wrong to make a appointment with the GI doctor. I'm so mad at this place what's the point of having a emergency room if they just pass you off. Last time she went they didn't bother to tell us she was severely anemic. Got ER UMC!

The staff is amazing! They treated my Mom with patience, caring, and excellence. Thank you UMC for all you do. You are a force for good.

Great place! This is the only hospital my family and I go to and will ever go to. They've always taken great care of us and I really appreciate the entire staff. Everyone shows passion in what they do. Thank you, UMC!

You would think if someone is battling depression and makes a cry for help to the dr and pulls out iv the dr would help not say"oh well your free to go home" I wish there was a lower rating!

Fastest ive ever gotten blood drawn and into a room getting medical attention in my life! Didnt even feel when the nurse took blood. Best medical care ive ever gotten.

Told them ive had a blood clot in my braid before, conveyed the urgency of the situation and that my head hurts exactly the same as the time i had a blood clot, i am still waiting here... its been 8 hours and the only reason i havent left is because im too scared. literally if u r too full then turn people away, dont make them wait 8 hours while they could very possibly stroke out. also, when i went to the counter to convey how serious this really is, all they could say is your category is moving up ??? what does that even mean! the staff is extremely rude to patients and when my mom called they told her well shes stable... and that was her excuse for why i havent been seen yet. DO NOT COME HERE.

Stay away from the UMC emergency room and a doctor Piel he is a heartless and I compassionate sorry excuse for a medical professional! Just plain sad! Please check his credentials he is absolutely not qualified to care for patients! Just plain sickening!

This place is the absolute worst. I have been waiting in the lobby with my girlfriend for over 4 hours. Not only are they extremely rude at the front desk but they don't care about what kind of pain you're experiencing and they'll put you on a waitlist behind someone who seems completely fine. All they say is "we'll let you know when open rooms are available" when asking for the estimated wait time even if you've been waiting for over 4 hours. DO NOT GO HERE. If I could rate this any lower I would. Nothing but unprofessionalism and carelessness here.

Have been waiting in the ER for 10 hrs and am still waiting

Been here since 7:50 PM. Bleeding from knee replacement on Tuesday morning. Went home about 3PM yesterday. Bleeding began just after 6: 30 PM. Saw one of my surgeons about 9:30PM they came in at 10:37 to finally put new dressing on was not as good as yesterday's very decent dressing. I had to wait for dressing to be brought to ER room took less than 4 minutes to apply new dressing. I had to tell them to pull up my dirty stocking and apply the ace bandage that was ordered. The nurse seem completely confused about that part. If this happens again in the next week and a half I am going to tuff it out until the Doctor's off is open even if it take over 48 hours.

Wait time is awful,awful!! Check-in staff not nice. They act like you're a bother to them.

IF YOU WANT TO LIVE OR BE TREATED LIKE A HUMAN BEING, DO NOT GO TO THIS ER. Some of the WORST medical personnel you will EVER encounter. Go to covenant!!!!

I waited more than five hours with tremendous abdominal pain

This place has gone downhill. The employees don't care about the patients and they act like they're better than everyone. They have no compassion whatsoever and don't even try to do their job right. Everyone takes their sweet time doing nothing. I don't understand how they still have people trying to get care here. I will never bring my kids nor myself nor anybody else here to be treated like they don't matter.

I am leaving a 1 star because you can't choose a 0. My husband was taken to this ER after eating lunch and something had been lodged in his throat And before they can even get him in a room to find out what the plan of Care is they are coming around asking for insurance and payment methods before even getting him into a room, you'd think gee this man may be not able to breathe If we dont do something but no let us worry about money first he can breathe later, I'm already so pissed at this place and I'm over 500 miles away and can't be there with my husband, he's been there for over an hour already and so far they haven't done anything to help him

I love this place! They've already saved the lives of my uncle, mother, son, & myself... Very serious issues @ that. I will forever be grateful! God bless yall!

Best nurses and doctors around. They all have amazing bedside manner, get you in as quick as possible and have amazing care.

On the negative reviews, you all used the same copy and paste reply on every single one. No personalization at all, and it makes it seem like you all don't actually care about negative experiences.

been here since 8 o'clock Friday night just now got into a room at 5 o'clock Saturday morning if lack of house keeping for over night shift cause no one gets admitted at night so must not be in a rush to clean a room. With a hospital of over 400 hundred beds and it must be full and were waiting on some one to leave.

Got here and got seen really fast with my two yr old now siting in a room waiting for a while would of got 5 stars but this wait messed it up for them

The wait is completely too long. I understand that in the ER some other people can have more serious problems but, it should not take more than 2 hours to read an X-ray. Nor should it take more that two hours to place someone back in a room.

This place is RIDICULOUS!!!!! My Dad came in with chest pains @6:30pm it s now 10:15pm and the nurse told us that they call the sicker people in first. The average wait she said was 4 1/2 hours. Employers all sitting around talking, laughing with no concern for the sick. I would be embarrassed to work here.

Been here 8 hours and 37 minutes. Daughter brought in by ambulance stroke or seizure symptoms(??) still in waiting area. What exactly is the criteria to be seen? Death

I arrived at approximately 3:30 PM by 12:30 PM I still had not seen by doctor. At that point I ripped out my IV and told them this is ridiculous there were people that came in after me there obviously were not in as much pain or had anything more wrong with them that was worse than me but yet they were taking back and seen by a doctor. The wait time is ridiculous the staff has no bedside manner s I will never use this ER again. There was a gentleman that came in room ODESZA that had three crest fingers on his left hand three hours later he still had not been seen by a doctor and he had three crushed fingers now you tell me why wasn t that person see immediately and that was because he was informed when they left ODESZA that they did not have a specialist there and that there would be a specialist to meet him when he got there. Worst ER I have ever been in in my entire life do not use this ER if you want to be taken care of promptly

The nurses were super helpful and kept me supplied with warm blankets all night long. Even though I waited +12hrs. I know it wasn't their fault.

If you are not an employee they don t care about you. YOU CANT EVEN FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THEM ABOUT PROCEDURES. We could not speak to administration we were not allowed to speak to anyone above the service department. Wee COULD NOT EVEN FILE A REPORT WITH SECURITY BECAUSE SECURITY DID NOT WANT TO BE BOTHERED WITH PAPERWORK. CMS will be receiving a complaint from us along with TDH. So unless you are one of UMC s privileged employees, you are not worth their time.

Was seen in a pretty quick time. Everyone was very friendly and provided a lot of much needed and useful information.

I think it sad that my wife who is pregnant and is having severe stomach pain has not been seen after over 2 hours. I see other people smile on there way back to there rooms! This is ridiculous UMC needs to prioritize patients that are actually in need of help instead of filling there waiting room up, and having people who actually need help wait hours just to be seen!

My god this place needs to be shut down the waiting room is outrageous if y weren t sick before you will coming out of there. People with needles in their arms waiting to be seen blankets everywhere over flowing with people. On top of that the staff is rude n say around doing nothing one nurse was sitting in the waiting room talking to a patient like she had no job if I can rate it zero stars I would

This place is a literal joke. They took 7 hours to get a car accident patient OUT OF THE LOBBY. Covered in blood and bruises. And no they were not overly busy with hundreds of patients. We saw perhaps 30 people during our 8 hour stay. We also witnessed an elderly woman who was bound to a wheelchair, BEG for help to the bathroom. The staff ignored her for 45 minutes until she was crying and notifying the front desk 4 different times that she needed help or she was going to have an accident. Go to any other emergency center than UMC. Can t believe this place calls themselves a hospital.

Ridiculous wait time waited all night got there at 10 wasnt seen till 8 that morning then they said help then said they didnt know what was wrong me and sent me home, soon found out i have a spinal fracture

Worst experience imaginable. I have been here over 4 hours and still waiting. My wife is having a gallbladder attack and I went to ask how long and tell them she was in bad pain and couldn t stop vomiting and the wonderful Brit at the desk told me it was a long wait when did you get here... at that time we had been here 15 minutes and she LAUGHED at said she s going to have to wait. They only care if you work for them. A girl came in after we had been here 3 1/2 hours wearing their scrubs with just a fever and got tended to almost immediately. The ONLY thing they care about is if you want a blanket because it s -200 degrees in the waiting room. Most of these people have nothing more than a cold and not in pain the way my wife is and they get to go in before her even if they got here after. The only good reviews are people that work here or that have family that work here.

I ve always went to my Dr but this time I had an emergency. I would of stayed but the front desks lady was rude. She talking about a patient that was there how they were so ungrateful. I have never seen or heard such disrespect to a person.

Recent care of my brother was great! The staff was very courteous and helpful. I was also kept informed of his medical condition.

Rude! Just rude! I guess I was bothering the woman who answered the emergency line. And the woman she transferred me to was rude also. If you don t like your job then stop going in and let someone with some sense answer phones!

Just to darn slow but they use old technology to make diagnosis which is not professional in my book. The doctors are too inexperienced..

Is there just one doctor on call for all the sick people that come into this emergency room let alone the ones that have left. And many many sick people have left and gone else where. Nurses fumble around and act really nervous. Just what you want when they are poking you with a needle. They claim they are a level 1 trama center but I can't imagine this is true when the man bleeding out of his face had to wait 2 hours to be seen.

This place is terrible. I was told it would be 2 hour wait 3 and a half hours ago. Now I am told there is a 5 hour wait... Don't come here if it's an actual emergency. You'll die in the waiting room.

The wait time is aweful.. I would hate to be dying.. excuses excuses waiting on beds waiting on this seeing Covenants overflow.. the wait time is 5 to 11 hours I mean really something needs to be done.. I won't be back..it's sad when the ER puts a blemish on the care the rest of the hospital exibits

I try to call ahead ER staff hung up on me twice. I suffer from COPD . They're saying staff has no bedside matter. Approximate wait time from versing staff. 8 to 12 hours wait time for someone in critical need of medicine that cannot Breath. It's a shame there's only 2 major hospitals in this city of 300000.

I came in and was terrified that my liver, kidneys, or other organs were in danger. I was in terrible pain and so scared. In the face of a terrible disease, I came into contact so many people who obviously cared. From the phlebotomist to the radiology tech to the nurses, intern and doctors, everyone treated me like I really mattered to them. I can't say enough to thank everyone that treated me.

This place is a joke! I took my wife there because she had a high temperature. We got there at 1130 pm and the ER was almost empty. There where two other people and it took more than 5 hours for us to be next in line. I would not have minded the wait because I know how it can be in a hospital, but Nathaniel told me it would only take 3 hours. I asked him if he was sure and he said trust me. Never again Nathaniel! While we waited, Veronica and Brittany took vital signs and gave my wife Motrin for her temperature. She told them she was allergic to aspirin. My wife was never given an allergy bracelet to tell other staff that she had an allergy. Then we waited and waited and waited. Finally after 3hours I asked if we were going to be able to see a doctor. Brittany said hopefully so. I'm not going to lie, I got upset and told Brittny "hopefully doesn't pay the bills. Then Brittney became upset at my criticism and dismissed me to my seat by saying you can go ahead and have a seat sir! I couldn't believe my ears! I calmly sat down, and told my wife who was in pain again because the Motrin had started to wear off, we should be next. By this time we were the only people in the ER and it had been that way for over 2 hours. We waited again for 2 hours then I went to speak to Nathanial to ask what the hold up was. That's when Nathaniel stated the obvious to me by saying we where next. I told him I figured that but why was it taking so long? He gave me the run around by saying it shouldn't be long now. It had already been 5 hours. I was furious! I got my wife and we went to the CVS were the pharmacists helped us faster and with more compassion then than crummy place. I will never go there again. Just to recap:
1. Don't tell people a time frame if it can't be met
2. If a patient has an allergy then give the patient an allergy bracelet
3. Don't be rude to the patient's by dismissing them to a seat.
4. Don't tell people a time frame if it can't be met
It's not that hard to be professional, plus it's your job.
I will never use this ER AGAIN!

Why are there so many negative reviews about this hospital and there is still nothing being done or addressed? There are very few nurses who seem to actually try to do their job while the rest of them jabber on and play on their phones. The doctors visit you for 5 minutes and then order you some pain meds until he comes back again in about 4 hours. Seriously. It doesn't matter what your symptoms are. Everyone is treated the same unless you are missing a limb. Are there just not enough doctors? Is this a result of poor management? Why do your nurses seem so uncaring? Until these questions are answered, Covenant is the absolute way to go over this place.

The only ER my family will go to, wonderful system and always cared for with the nicest nurses and drs! UMC your appreciated!!

Horid wait times. Been here in the er waiting lobby witb my mother over 4 hours, there is no end in site. Looks like we will be here all night. Moms blood pressure keeps dropping and she is all ready on her second tank of oxygen....after the first one ran out two hours ago. This is horrible. I cant believe that this is the current state of healthcare in Lubbock. What a joke. Should not even be one star, they cant even earn that star, its just a give me because the site wont let you review lower. Just pathetic is all i can say. If you cant see anyone else just turn them away dont make people wait all night. Let us know why the wait is going to be so long. Right now all of the staff in the emergency room looks like idiots. Not one of UMCs finer moments.

Pathetic. Wait times pushing 7 hours. Not even halfway full. Mind you that's maybe a patient at most surrounded by loved ones. You can die in here and they won't see you for MAYBE 2 more hours. Ridiculous. I fail to believe that in this entire hospital. It's this bad.

I went to the ER twice with severe lower back pain. My white blood count was high and they didn't seem concerned. One doctor said it was sciatica and the other said it was constipation. They made me feel like I was there just to get pain pills. Went to Covenant hospital and they discovered I had a Spinal Epidural Abscess. Emergency surgery was done. I spent 6 weeks in the hospital and 2 months in rehab. Never again will I go to the ER at UMC.

The nurses were amazing and helpful, we were in and out fast knowing it is an Emergency Room and it was full. But they provided the great care of my children. Thank you so much!!!

I love going here. My Drs are in one building. The staff are awesome. I literally can t say enough good things about the place. True awesome place!!

Pretty much the same complaint. They lie and tell you it'll take 2 hours to see you, then you sit there for 5+ hours.

Thank you umc E.R. for all your dedicated help. Went in there with my 2 yr old with a broken arm. And ALL staff was super attentive and talked to us in a way that made me feel safe and comfortable. The wait was long but i understood that staff was flooded with patients. They kept checking up on us often to make sure we were ok under circumstance. Every staff had one job to do and to us they did it well. Thank u umc for showing ur staff compassion towards patients.thank u

Disgusting, disgraceful, rude, uncaring... women at desk rolling eyes and smacking lips when asked anything. What happened to this hospital?? I used to brag that will likely never happen again.

Dr. Piel an intern I m guessing is the most heartless non compassionate lack of common sense ER non professional I have ever met in my life! Seems to think he s psychic as well ! Go in with serious pain after receiving spinal injections on Monday morning and checking basic toe reflection very arrogantly tells me I m not emergent and have him sign the paper and get him out of here! Your obviously in your profession for the money because you have no compassion or common sense! Stay away from Dr. Piel in the UMC ER and UMC medical center ER !!!!!!! I am filing a customer advocacy complaint you sorry excuse for a medical professional!

Take notes off all the negative reviews people this hospital and it s ER staff are inadequate at best especially intern Dr. Piel! A heartless piece of bat guano!

We have been here for about three hours I have yet to see someone whip down chairs or clean reception... lady came in unconscious and I was the first to assist while staff congregated.. people who come here are in extreme pain, my mother was sent here from a clinic because she showed symptoms of a heartache and these people act like they work at Walmart..please remember that you choose this line of work and if sympathy and compassion are not shown you will continue to get bad ratings.. and please don t ever tell a patient who is in severe pain to answer quickly or y all will move to the next person!!! And although it shouldn t matter she has excellent healthcare and no one deserves disrespect on one of the scariest days of their life!!!

Absurd delays (total stay: 4 hours for a rather simple problem), outrageously expensive. To their defense, it is not different that the current state of our healthcare system.

Went an took my boyfriend an said 4 hour wait. Then 5 hrs later said 13 more hours.

I broke my hand and drove straight to the ER. They were very helpful going so far as to help me fill out the paperwork, since my hand was of no use. Went back very quickly. Everyone was super nice from the front desk, nurses and x ray tech. PA Tyler Little reduced the break and put the splint on for me, and he was wicked awesome (I say that because he's from Boston) Overall a good experience.

Came into the waiting room a little after 8pm. Still here at 4am. This is a joke. My wife is in severe pain and nobody cares, just another day at the office for these people. Sad thing others are suffering the same wait. If this is how they teach patient care then they need a new book.

My doctor was Lex Dooley and he was absolutely exceptional!! He made me feel heard which in my opinion is rare with doctors and provided exceptional care and aftercare plans. I literally snapped a picture of the white board so I could remember his name to write a review. The nurses were also phenomenal (grace)I am so grateful I came here! Thank you UMC!

Most workers there are pretty cold blooded and the ambulance people were even much worse!!!!!!!!!!

I had a great doctor name jason tidwell and my nurses amazing I went in and was seen quickly and told an hour later what was wrong.

Horrible experience , I went in for chest pain and closed throat as well as flu like symptoms the doctor seemed to just be in a hurry to discharge me , wasn't tested for the flu , no one checked my chest , just made gave me a diagnosis based on looking at me , nothing was explained to me , I'm very dissapointed! I'm here from out of town and honestly I am not sure I will return here anytime soon .

Wanted to share our much more positive experience. I've been to this ER 3 times in my life. Once with a broken ankle, once with a blood clot and one as a referral to run a full work up due to fear of metastatic brain cancer from an mri result. I got in right away for my broken ankle and my blood clot and spent the nest 9 years in pristine health. Last week we went in on our doctors referral because she knew outpatient services would take weeks. My husband and I waited almost 5 hours with a very packed waiting room. Was it long? Yes. Was I stable? Yes! Was it quicker than the several weeks waiting for outpatient appointments? Yes! My ER nurse was David and he is awesome and reviewed my scans with me. I met briefly with two ER doctors who were very friendly and they admitted me where I stayed in the hospital for the next 5 days with very good care! If I had started seizing or had lost consciousness they would've taken me straight back but an ER is an emergency room. Expect long waits if you are stable and they are busy. Also they are a level 1 trauma center. Any real emergency is going to come before you. For me it was much quicker than the weeks I would have had to wait comparatively speaking. We made the best of it and I'm thankful I wasn't first in line cause that would mean I was shot or in a car accident or some other horrible thing. I'm thankful I was okay enough to wait.

Stay away from the UMC ER and definately stay away from the Intern Dr. Piel a non compassionate seemingly thinking he s a psychic and determines your not in pain by watching you take 2 steps! Your a sorry excuse for a Doctor and an even bigger douchebag for just working for a paycheck! Dr. Piel is horrible refuse his ER services ! Demand a different doctor and someone check his credentials and mental stability!
