I will miss my large, open studio at Versailles. I was able to paint the walls. The hardwood floors were a lovely warm color and the cabinets gave a lot of great storage. I had a lovely view of sunsets & could see fireworks over White Sox stadium. The bathtub was nice and the water pressure solid; the hot water was dependable. It s a quiet building with kind residents. There s laundry and a package receiving system and the electronic entry system is convenient. Utilities are very reasonable.
It was evident early on that management communicates poorly: they promised that the apartment I was shown was identical to the one I d move into, but on move-in day, I found my unit was smaller with a different layout. The office closes at 6 p.m. weekdays, and they rarely return voicemails or emails, making them very hard to access if you work full-time. Announcements come out solely through paper fliers posted around the building or tucked into doors, even when they re about unexpected office closures or emergencies (ex. transformers blowing out or water outages). When the elevators were out once, we didn t know if they were back up til we got home. I had three building managers in 3 years: there is very high turnover.
You never knew in advance whether/when maintenance was coming to fix reported issues. Several times I would come home to find the problem fixed but my things thrown out of the way (ex. damp shower items left on my bed). Once my toilet was continuously flushing for days and loudly humming; after days with no response, I called the emergency hotline; an external plumber stopped the sound and said it would be an easy fix. But it took me checking in daily at the office, all as we had to flush the toilet manually with a bucket, before it was fixed. A hazardous puddle forms each year outside the laundry room and the gym machines are often out of service or dirty. Two years ago there was work done on the outside of the building dust leaked into my apartment, and the windows were never cleaned. There s no fan in the bathroom but when I reported water damage I was scolded about steam. Also, while I won t be specific, I had a few concerns about security while I lived there.
When I moved in, my radiator valve needed to be replaced, and so it was extremely hot, even when turned off. I was forced to open the windows to get relief all winter (even in freezing temps), as my apartment reached 80+ degrees, and I was miserable on warmer days in Nov/March. Year 1, my requests & emails about the issue were ignored; year 2, a fix was promised & they confirmed it needed a replaced valve, yet they delayed repeatedly until it was spring; it was finally fixed only in late fall 2018, only due to my desperation and continued pressure to get it fixed.
I was scheduled for move-out a month in advance & confirmed twice the building has strict rules about how you must move out. When I arrived on the day & time of my move, a Saturday at 9 a.m. (office hours are 9 5), the manager wasn t there. We waited for 20 min then started moving using the back door as instructed, though an alarm went off, not knowing what else to do. I waited for the manager til 10, with no sign. At 10:30 maintenance arrived to disable the alarm and yelled at me, insisting I should ve waited. I said he only showed up due to the alarm, my timing was set in advance, and that I was paying movers hourly so couldn t wait 90 min for people to show up. He then proceeded to yell at my movers which I found very inappropriate. When we left at 11:30 with the movers, I saw the manager in her office.
My rent was raised each year until it was exorbitant for a studio even in Hyde Park. That price, along with the heating and communication issues, made me unable and unwilling to stay in this building.
