Not the best experience this time. Pillows are so soft and squishy that I flat out couldn't get comfortable. Noise from both street level (I was on the 10th floor) and the floor (there was a wedding where they apparently invited the loudest door closers alive) made it very difficult to get to sleep. Based on this experience, I wouldn't stay there again.

The Benson Hotel and particularly its General Manager, Ron Gladney, have been wonderful to both my wife and extended family who have stayed at the hotel. The Benson s elegance and style are enhanced by its attentive staff, and its fabulous location. My wife and I love staying at the hotel for special occasions. It s also comforting knowing that we have a wonderful place for our family when they are in town. I would recommend the Benson to anyone visiting Portland.
Nice old hotel. Bed was very comfortable, room was spotless. Bathroom was tiny but had modern fixtures and updates. Protesters woke us up every night we were there. Room was expensive, but location is great.
Out of all the places to stay in downtown Portland, the Benson has become my least favorite. I've stayed there several times hoping for better outcomes but each is the same. The best way to describe staying at the Benson is its like staying at grandma's house. Everything is dusty, old, and outdated with a few upgrades here and there. On top of that, the walls are so thin that you can't have any social interaction without getting a complaint. It's just a run down, upiddy, out dated hotel. We prefer the Embassy.
Service was nice, spacious rooms for my liking. The biggest problem though, the room carpet! Never have I bothered to check if the room I'll be staying in has carpet or not. Now I forever will. It was absolutely disgusting. Right in the middle of the walkway between the bed and the tv was a massive pee or vomit stain and multiple other stains all over. I didn't pay good money to have stains everywhere. Had I stayed more than one night, I would've demanded another room. I will never stay here again. Disgusting.
A GREAT stay here. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the area, and the hotel is very well located for sightseeing and nightlife downtown. The restaurant is also very good. Eat a bit early to save $ on the Benson Burger and vegetarian burger both of which are delicious.
Absolutely love this hotel in downtown Portland! So much history and character to this place. Very cozy feel especially during holiday season. Nice hotel bar. Free wine tasting!
I have had many occasion to frequent the Benson for both business and pleasure. All of those experiences have been nothing short of excellent. The service, environment and beautiful interior surroundings make this my Hotel of choice in Downtown Portland, OR.
This hotel is spectacular. It has a vintage luxury feel and isn't incredibly overpriced. You have to pay for valet parking but it ended up being so relaxing not having to worry about parking and being so close to everything to just walk around. Love the atmosphere of this hotel and would definitely stay again :) Amazing value, made me feel like a million bucks.
I've stayed at this location before, and always had acceptable experiences. The hotel is lavish, the rooms are nice, and the staff is helpful and kind.
This particular stay was pretty bad. There is construction going on on the facade of the building. Workers were banging in the exterior of the building until after 8pm. It took repeated begging to the front desk to get them to stop.
The breakfast provided for our event was sub-par.
The next day, during our convention, the fire alarm system went off during our meeting. We were told it was a false alarm, and that it would be remedied, but after 15 minutes the alarm was still going off. Our speakers couldn't continue, so we had to leave the hotel and carry on the rest of our convention the whole rest of the day at another venue. I can't imagine the trouble this caused for the planners of our venue. We heard later the alarm was on for two hours. This kind of thing is frustrating. But the fact that none of the staff apologized (despite being on site in a situation out of their control) shows a lack of customer service I find more disturbing.
Great historic hotel with the friendliest staff around. Get a companion fish if you're feeling lonely. Free shoe shine service. Great location downtown.
Old hotel, but the suite rooms are bigger and nicer than the regular rooms. It is located in a great place with easy walking distance to restaurants and shopping.
Lovely hotel...rooms are amazing...only complaint was the bathroom. Super small, poor water pressure and the bathroom sink faucet is way too short...you can't even wash your hands properly. The vanity/shelving space is non existent.
It was an "okay" experience. The service in the lobby and from the valet was very good. The lobby itself is spectacular. Our breakfast was delicious (albeit $50 for pancakes and smoothies).
Outside of that, the room was not very big, especially considering that it was supposedly a junior suite. Turn-down service did not happen at all during our stay, although it was advertized. The robes that were supposed to be in our suite, weren't. The daily weather report that we were supposed to get on our pillows as part of the phantom turn down service, didn't happen either. We had to REQUEST that our room be cleaned, because they missed it the first day. The speed of the wireless internet was slow, which is not good in a supposed upmarket hotel.
I think on balance, they are riding on their history and appearance, and might be worth $125 a night, but not $200+. They are 4 star diamond rated from AAA....however, if you look at the rules for that rating, they are not living up to half of them.
We stayed two nights at the Benson. We had some noise issues from the street at the first night. We were moved to the other room, and it was fine. Overall, the hotel was classic and elegant :)
Place was enjoyable, rooms were a little dirty and the building was definitely showing its age. Decent location around Downtown Portland, especially with transit. Decent for the price, but there are definitely better choices!
Nice tempurpedic beds and bathroom remodels, but the walls are a bit thin and you hear everything in the halls and the next room. Thank the Benson for providing ear plugs.
Very nice hotel with friendly staff. Rooms were comfy and looked to be recently renovated. Beds were comfy with Tempurpedic mattresses. Hotel is also conveniently located in the downtown area near lots of different things to do
Only stayed one night, but the hotel was nice. The black out curtains were excellent. We only stayed one night and the phones in the room weren't working so we had to go to the front desk to order room service, but otherwise no real complaints. The food for room service was a little underwhelming, but they did allow us a late check out so we got to explore the area
Great spot downtown Portland for dinner & drinks. Lots of room at the lobby restaurant around 7 on a Sat night and filled up by 8. Great menu selection, I recommend the burger. If you're a drinker, they have several unique options to choose from. Excellent, friendly and attentive wait staff and wonderful jazz trio providing lovely music. The only downside is that downtown parking can sometimes be tricky but overall, an excellent spot!
If you are looking for historic you will enjoy the Benson. Unfortunately I prefer more up to date and modern accomodations. Not my cup of tea. Not a bad place, just not for me.
Top knotch Recommend highly! This is a very upscale hotel it isn't a fly by night it is a historic place here in Portland great food and has a ballroom for banquets or parties
We really enjoyed our stay at The Benson. The location is perfect, with easy access to all of downtown Portland. Staff were very friendly. Loved the free coffee in the morning downstairs, but wish there was a coffee maker in the room.
Had breakfast, very good food. Our server was Kathryn. She was awesome!! Made sure we had everything we needed and my coffee was always full. I live in Vancouver, so not too far to come. Nice surprise!! We'll be back.
We have our Christmas dinners here. Spectacularly beautiful and ornamental interior Lobby space. Always a pleasant experience. Staff is friendly and helpful. Food prepared was outstanding.Highly recommend for events.
The hotel is wonderful and perfect located for a citytrip. The Benson has an outstanding Chef Concierge. Mr. Rowland takes care of all wishes from his guests. You can see and feel that he loves his job.
This historic hotel started by one of Oregon's timber barons. The hotel has beautiful woodwork hand carved by men early in the twentieth century. My son had his wedding and reception here, beautiful venue for a wedding.
I like the style of the Benson, but they are currently under construction and that makes it tough. Also, I've stayed in some of the renovated rooms and don't like the bathroom setup. However, the higher end suites are really nice and some have great views of downtown.
