An excellent, beautifully presented collection of stunning art. Both well known and more obscure artists are presented well in a thoughtfully curated series of rooms which are works of art themselves. Whilst entry is free, a donation is requested.

There for a Holbein talk. One of my favourite portrait artists. Much I already knew, but always great to revisit and soak in the magnificence of his work. To place them in such times of political & religious upheaval made them all the more interesting on this momentous day of Brexit. NB he also came to the UK looking for work from Germany. Pity The Ambassadors was unavailable

Friday evening they stay open until 21h with a free talk 19h to 20h. I went along with the walk and liked it a lot. We only visited 3 painting in about 1 hour but it was if it only was 15 min. The collection is really huge, about 2400 painting on display. This means you really have to choose, the plans and audioguides offer different tours or you can go downstairs and print a specific tour you want to follow. I went straight to the sunflower form a quick look and then viewed some other paintings before the tour, and finished at the Van Gogh room again.

Goya exhibition today was a huge disappointment. Was looking forward to it immensely but the sheer volume of people made it impossible to appreciate the works - crammed together like sardines in a tin - impossible to move around the exhibition space or get close enough to a painting for proper viewing. Only tactic was to try and eyeball a piece of particular interest from across the room then spend the next five minutes trying to get close enough to have a proper look at it. Ended up missing most of the exhibition as a consequence.

I have enjoyed previous visits to the Sainsbury Wing exhibitions and they have often been very crowded but this was simply too much - if I thought I would have gotten anywhere I would have asked for a refund. Given the time and expense involved in travelling to London it is simply not worth it. I'll be sticking to the RA friends events in the future.

Amazing museum with amazing art. Could walk around for hours. Its a one way system at The moment which means if you miss something you have to go back and walk around in circles. Hur otherwise easy to follow it

Collection is so large, you could spend a long time in the National Gallery. The gallery had someone saying hello and welcoming people when you came in. Really good amme ities and signage. There was a really friendly and helpful guide who made my day when he pointed out the symbolism and hidden secrets of the Ambassadors painting in room 2. Will definitely be going back.

The National Gallery was not on my list of places to see when in London. I m not a major art buff by any means.

I m glad I got the chance to visit the Gallery though as it was wonderful. It s fun to see all of the art work throughout many generations! It s also a good place to cool down if you need a break from the outdoors. I didn t see the entire gallery as it s far too big for the amount of time I had, but definitely worth the quick visit.

Another great thing about it, it s free to enter (they do request a donation).

If you have an extra hour or so, just stop in!

I live here in London. On free days I sometimes head down to the National Gallery. Yes there are tons of people. Yes they are mostly tourists. But they for the most part stay out of your way. One of the biggest reasons I go here is actually because there are so many people. When I am surrounded by people I don't know, I feel strangely comfortable and alone. It relaxes me. My favorite rooms are the horse room and the impressionist rooms. I don't remember their numbers. The art here is amazing, some of the best in the world, and there's so much of it. you can spend days exploring it. The audio tours are great, although the little snippets of info next to each painting is usually enough if you are speeding through. Staff is nice and accomodating, and not too mean if you get too close. Overall a great tourist or visiting place, I love it.

A really nice place to spend your windy afternoon in the city. Some people stay at the entrance asking for donations, but they don t say it s optional (looks like it s mandatory to enter the museum). The museum has a pretty structure and is organized.
