Smashingly amazing free museum packed with first class invaluable art. Outstanding lighting which improves one's perception of the works even more. Could spend days there and open late on Thursday and Friday which means less crowds and children usually.

Wonderful collection, worth a visit whenever you're in the area with an hour to spare. General entry is free - what a shining example to our European cousins!
The Monet exhibition (May 2018) is stunning. You do have to pay a few pounds for this - worth every penny.

We really like going to the museum and seeing all the artwork. I'm not sure if there is a time when it isn't crowded. They had several nice gift shops scattered throughout with the normal museum type of items. Lots of Christmas items when we were there. Free toilet rooms.

Great museum and friendly staff!

Great museum and friendly staff!

On another note, do not rent a car from Enterprise on Mykonos in Greece. The couple that runs the station is totally rude and obnoxious and tries to scam people with fake accident claims. Check out the reviews!

One of the world s greatest collections of European paintings, from medieval Italian painting, through post impressionism. Free admission to the permanent collection, but charged admission to special exhibitions. Worth multiple visits.

Such a large collection of European art from 1200s to early 1900s, it can be overwhelming - masterpieces of each major tradition. And as with other London museums, free admission. You are allowed to be up close and yet they arrange the large pieces so you can view from the proper distances (sometimes as far as 15 meters). The had a small painting class in session for impressionist that was interesting to observe.

With its rich collection of masterpieces it's always a must-see. It deserves many hours but it's free (except for temporary exhibitions), so you can visit multiple times without getting tired. But please donate some money because the gallery needs constant maintenance and improvements of the displays would also be welcome.

I went with our 6 year old little boy today and we both had a lovely time, in particular all of the staff we came across were incredibly friendly and accommodating. On arrival the smiley lady doing the bag check told us about art workshops for children and duly directed us to the main info desk and within 15 minutes we eagerly began an activity centred around designing and decorating a white fabric glove a small a way to celebrate the signature symbol brandished so wonderfully by Michael Jackson, linking relevantly to the exhibition within the gallery. Our son loved the 90 minute session which began by researching the beautiful Tudor gallery on floor 2 and discussing the symbolism within many of the works. All in all a really fascinating visit and we will definitely head back there soon for more. The staff delivering the workshop were wonderful and developed such a rapport with the children and parents.

I do love the National Gallery, there's something here for all tastes. Its a lot to take in but because it's free entry you can do multiple visits, to explore new things or revisit old favourites. They also do free tours to explain more about the paintings. Its a national treasure.

Rude disgusting door person I didn t realise there was a bag check I was shouted at by the bag checker I said what his response you need to learn some manners I don t see a problem with saying what he was considerably irate and was talking whilst eating spitting food out absolutely revolting.
I left and will be cancelling my membership if there going to have bag checks they should be consistent and have them all the time some days they don t have one absolutely ridiculous.

The National Gallery is one of the free public museum in London. I think that it's not beautiful, but S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R! It's full of Italian Arts. And you can see the Impressionist's artists painting. I feel in love for this place.
And now, if you're interested, the National Museum hosts an exhibition, dedicated to the periods of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, for only 7 pounds.

Very enjoyable visit, though a bit busy to get through. Some sections do require payment but the main portion is free to walk through (and contains many wonderful works of art). Recommend visiting same day as a trip to the British Museum, Trafalgar Square, and the National Portrait Gallery.

I'm a regular visitor and friend here. We came for the Courtald Impressionist exhibition which like most exhibitions here was superb some amazing pieces on display. My only gripe is with the people who insist on carrying there bags and backpacks into a crowded room. For goodness sake people use the excellent cloak room facilities.
