Billie did an awesome job. She had to go get a major part for the furnace and with the bad weather and roads, she was great. This is the second time that she has helped us out and we are extremely happy with her. Thanks Billie!!
Jay Fries and Dave installed a humidifier for me yesterday. Last night, the house felt more comfortable and I slept great. Jay made sure that I knew how to operate the unit and that I was satisfied with the installation. If you don't have a humidifier on your furnace, I would highly recommend calling Schaal Heating and Cooling today.

Wife wanted $99 ac tune up special, I complied and it was just as I expected. Paid guy $100 to come out and tell me everything is working great but will soon need repair, several $1000. Tech was great answered all my question but not much of tuneup more like an inspection. Probably wouldn t pay for this service again. Since I never really witnessed any tuneup or cleaning , more quick visual inspection and estimates on further repairs might need in future, again tech was really nice.
Chad and Nathan, were awesome. Very knowledgeable and professional. They went above and beyond, what I expected them to. I swear my furnace room was cleaner than when they'd arrived! Wouldn't use any other company.
10/20/20 My wife and I had another great experience in dealing with Schaal Heating and Cooling today. Technician, Joey Palizzolo serviced our furnace and went above and beyond in providing outstanding service. He clearly explained everything that he did as well as offered valuable advice and money saving ideas for our home. I can't say enough good things about his professionalism and Schaal Heating and Cooling as a service provider! I highly recommend Joey and Schaal for other services such as air control quality, energy efficiency, plumbing, etc. Without a doubt, this is a 5- Star technician and company that you should take advantage of!
Today my wife and I were set up with an awesome new furnace, air conditioning unit, and hot water heater. We're very confident that our home will be well taken care of for many years to come and thrilled that we selected Schaal Heating and Cooling as our vendor. Their sales rep Jonathan was extremely knowledgeable and very honest in helping us select the right units for our needs.
Equally as important, I want to compliment their installation team for the outstanding work that they did today. I can't say enough about how professional they were throughout the entire installation. Their work was immaculate in every sense of the word and they did a wonderful job of explaining everything in regards to operation of the units as well as future maintenance. Not being a highly mechanically inclined individual, this added touch meant an awful lot to me.

My wife, Patty, and I have resided in Des Moines in excess of twenty years. Shortly after moving here we were fortunate enough to accidentally discover Schaal Heating and Cooling. They serviced our existing furnace and air conditioner for many years. Approximately nine years ago they installed a new heating and cooling system. They have since checked and serviced the units semi-annually. They have always been reliable and we have had absolutely no complaints.
Subsequently, we have had several plumbing issues develop that needed to be addressed. We were reluctant to hire just anybody; as we needed so much work done. We were worried about being ripped off by unscrupulous individuals. We were becoming desperate. One faucet s drip had progressed to a steady stream. lo and behold, we received an e-mail from Schaal that they had recently entered the plumbing business. How lucky for us. We now knew that we had a company that we could trust.
We, of course, immediately: Called Schaal Ya-All.
A short time later, T.J. returned our call to schedule a visit with us. He came out that afternoon to assess our needs. He returned the following day with an estimate for the job. What a pleasant surprise. The estimate was Less than we expected. The job consisted of 1) Removing two shower/bath units and installing new units and fixtures. 2) Removing and installing two new toilets. 3) Removing and installing three new drains and faucet fixtures. 4) Removing and installing a new sump pump. And finally, removing and installing a new main shut off valve in the basement.
We gave T.J. carte blanche in choosing fixtures, toilets, etc. He didn t disappoint.
We are extremely happy with Schaal s work. Everything looks great. T.J. And Matt are highly skilled plumbers. Also, nice guys.
I live in a 100 year home that had central air conditioning added 22 years ago. The home was remodeled around the units. Dylan and Lloyd did a great job of removing the old equipment and installing the new equipment. The new system cools the house much faster and these guys were great to work with.
Logan performed my AC tune up and installed surge protection. He was professional and courteous. Always a great experience with Schaal!
Schaal was quick to respond to our leaky faucet issue. Scott was able to diagnose the problem, offer three solution options with absolutely no pressure to make a decision, and, once we picked our option, had our faucet fixed less than 2 hours after his initial visit. Would highly recommend!
Had a great experience, the gentleman who came were very clean and fast with the work. They put tarps and carpet runners down everywhere and wore booties the whole time. At the end they ran through everything with me and explained and answered any questions I had.
We use Schaal for our HVAC needs and plumbing. Our AC went out and they had Billie to our house within 2 hours of calling. Billie spent 2 hours trying to get everything up and running but lo and behold, a vermin of some sort had chewed through some wires and killed the AC. Billie was absolutely fantastic and tried every which way from Sunday to get our AC running but unfortunately it was fried. We were not able to have someone back to the house to look o we things until a few days later but they were great and brought a portable AC to our home to help keep things bearable in this wonderful heat wave that is showing temps of 102! Cannot say enough about Schaal and everyone that we have worked with there.

Nate and Dylan were exceptional to work with. They arrived on time and happily wore covers over their boots, which they brought with. The AprilAire 600 unit is one of the best on the market and I was pleasantly surprised it was the automatic version over the manual, and the $500 fully installed special was a great value. The install was done very professionally, with solid ductwork instead of flex pipe. The electric wires, and water lines were routed to be out of the way and pleasing to the eye. Nate and Dylan used the broom and dustpan they brought to clean everything up at the completion of the job. It's only been two days, so I can't speak to a significant improvement in humidity within the house just yet. I will definitely use Schaal in the future as a result of my outstanding experience with Nate and Dylan as representatives of the company and workmanship.
Matt was great! The coldest day of the year and our less than 1 year old furnace stops. My husband is ill and if the company hadn't come out we would have had to go a hotel. Matt was very pleasant, prepared and professional. I am thankful for such a wonderful technician to come to our rescue!

These two men arrived early, got their work done quickly and neatly, and cleaned up after themselves. Then Michael gave me a thorough overview of the new system and made sure I understood how to operate it. I was very impressed with their professionalism.

SCHAAL PLUMBING did a FANTASTIC JOB! I will always go to them for service after this experience. Our situation was: It is the middle of winter, and we had a water line leak that was requiring TWO sump pumps to run continuously to keep the basement dry. I had trouble sleeping as I was concerned the pumps would fail. I called 5 different companies; three responded; one had no expertise; another waited two days to complete a quote; and Schaal Plunbing sent TJ Hodge who arrived the next day from initial contact and provided a quote while on-site. In addition, TJ had the most knowledge of all who responded. Within three days, TJ and his crew were on-site and completed the job in one day! To make matters more difficult for them, they had to start the day at -8 degrees or -23 degrees with wind chill! The knowledge they had in working on plumbing in below zero temperatures and the end results are truly amazing. TJ and his team were knowledgeable, professional and customer focused. Was told my furnace would be installed and running in a day when I signed the contract. That was not the case. Had to take another half day off work which I can't afford. No excuses I was not given the facts, it was due to Mid American Energy but no one told be it would take more then a day and Schaal knew it might take longer, the installer told me that when he arrived to install the furnace, should of been told up front before the day of install. Guess does not matter since they did not loose any money but I lost wages.
Great service today! Scott was quick, efficient, and kept me updated and explained what was going on. Loved that they have a payment plan as well that you can apply for. Makes getting what you need done less stressful and I really appreciated it!

Unfortunately the problem area intermittent so after a couple weeks I needed another service call. Pete almost exactly replicated what Billy had done, quite well BTW, but sometimes a second set of eyes helps. A couple weeks back I had placed a guitar case behind a chair that totally blocked a cold air return. My bad, Pete's find. Great job Shall Y'all. Now Pete needs a raise too. Doug~
I was looking at replacing my furnace and AC. I got a quote from them, I feel the price was a little high, like $1,000 dollars high. I got quotes from 4 different companies. Good news, they weren't the highest. Bad news was they were the second highest in prices. As for the service this rating doesn't reflect that since I have never had them do any work. The sales person was very friendly and very willing to explain any question I asked.
They showed up on time, technician was very thorough before and after the service. Schaal has been a great company to deal with.
Our furnace quit on a Saturday evening in the middle of winter. A service tech was at our home within about 45 min of my call and she was fantastic. She diagnosed our problem and fixed it quickly. So thankful for the quick response and great service!

Dan was amazing as our sales and designer. He walked us through all the options, answered all the questions and was available by phone (call and text) after the appointment. He did a great job and everything he said was true (for instance the installers we're in our driveway by 8am and left at 3!)....he knows his stuff!
Dylan and Lloyd were our installers, they arrived on time, explained what was going to happen and then got to work. They were extremely professional, worked very clean and were very respectful of our house and the animals. I didn't even know they were here most of the time. At the end they explained all the new stuff (we got a whole new system) and worked with us to get our thermostat set, etc.

Came out to give us a quote for a new system as ours was original to the house and the ac developed a leak. After working out numbers he offered to give us a recharge of our ac unit to get us by.
Stay away from Schaal and any other larger HVAC company.
Here are my few experiences with them.
1st 12/27/16 - I had a routine servicing at which they found a small leak with the pvc exhaust pipe which was causing condensation to form and leak into the system they called this acid rain and said its very dangerous for me and my family. It is an issue, however I feel this avenue is a this fear tactic and a rush to sell you on something this is a huge red flag. After I agreed to the fix not fully knowing what it entailed due to the danger it posed they were going to charge me over $400 to repair/replace/pvc intake . This entailed $20 worth of PVC and 20 minutes of effort. After the fact when I realized this I gave quite a bit of pushback on cost and the tech called his manager and they lowered it to $235 saying the reason for the billing was due to the operation of the business which I understand to a degree but not at a 400% increase the 235 was still a ridiculous price but just goes to show the insane markup / sales they have and that either their overhead is way to high and they are passing that cost on to the consumer or their techs get commission. Either way I don t know how you can say you have been a trusted HVAC company in the area for 70 years when you are outright overcharging people who don t know better.
2nd 7/1/19 - New estimate given on a replacing TXV valve / dryer (doesn t include refrigerant) which was causing issues with my AC unit cooling properly. The tech came back with a price tag of $1800 saying it would take approximately 4 hours to do the work. I was incredibly surprised at an estimate that would be nearly the cost of a brand new unit. This $1800 also was stated that it wasn t a guarantee on fixing the overall issue which they were only 60% confident that it would, they stated it would fix this part and if other issues arose costs could get higher, and as soon as they install the part I own it. Much like the first scenario this appears to be a fear tactic to upsell to a new unit all together making me think this fix is futile and a waste of money. The tech went out of their way to say if it s a long term solution he would consider buying a new system. My current system is 7 years old and because of my 1st experience I did a bit more research this go around to get comparable cost and what I could see online was 200 in parts and another 200 at most for labor. That puts Schaal at charging $400 / hr for their techs (which is what they were trying to charge on my last experience). I called a smaller ma and pop shop (one of those that don t need to market/advertise and they operate on word of mouth for being honest and trustworthy and asked them if they were to replace a txv valve and dryer, they gave me a quote $325 - $375. They had looked at my system and determined is was just slightly low on Freon which they said was a $40 fix and if the TXV needed replace we can explore that more expensive $300 cost later. Needless to say the low Freon was causing issues and my AC is working well with no issues and cost a fraction of Schaal s quote.
My advice if you have to deal with them Ask a lot of questions to understand what service you re getting. Ask them to break out labor and parts. As a consumer this limits your ability to compare prices and research yourself. I will commend them on their techs, they are friendly that said don t fall into that trap of having your best interest because they don t they are in a business to make money. I first hand have seen a fear tactics, timing, and now something that is so expensive and its possible it won t work you should just buy a new one. Additionally, they have wiggle room to get the price lower as mentioned with my first experience. I have seen some comments on here from the owner indicating it s not a sales environment and they pride themselves on competitive pricing in the Des Moines area. This is misleading as yes it is may be competitive when rating yourself to similar HIGH overhead / highly advertised / sales HVAC companies.
