We saw Dr. Harry as we have a dog with behavioural issues, he was so patient with our dog and we can t thank him enough for this. He really put us at ease at a stressful time.

If you have a pet with behavioural issues, I would 100% recommend seeing Dr. Harry

Recently had to take my cat there who required emergency surgery. I had been turned down at CARE n Collingwood for not having the 50% of the $4500 they quoted me for the procedure and care. So arrived at Lort Smith with a highly stressed cat that still had an IV stuck in his arm from the Vet earlier and I was in shock. Staff were amazing. They took the cat in right away and also looked after me, calming me down and offering me a great repayment plan. I felt that they cared about the animal more than the money, which is assuring. and it felt that the staff, that I dealt with at least, had great emergency management skills for stressed out pet owners. Forget CARE - go to Lort Smith. Also, the whole surgery and care cost $2600 at Lort Smith. Half of the amount that CARE asked for. Thanks Lort Smith staff!! xx

We had a little bit of an emergency recently with our tiny trouble maker, our dog had gotten something stuck in her mouth & it was around 9 pm so no vets in our area were open, we will forever be greatful to the Vet & staff at this clinic, Rosie was in so much pain she couldn t close her mouth or walk properly, I called ahead & they told us to bring her in, accepted her straight away & treated her, she is happy and healthy now, we found out the next day when it was time for her walk that Rosie had got a hold of her harness & leash & was chewing on it, a piece of plastic from the harness had gotten stuck in her mouth, that little thing that clicks when you put the harness on the dog, I never thought that could even be a danger to a dog.... anyway highly recommend this place, great staff & service.

Wonderful staff and service with reasonable prices. Our 11 year old Spoodle needed lots of lumps removed and he was well looked after with his surgery and post surgery.
Healed wonderfully,as per photos.

Lort Smith and their staff are a disgrace.

Lort Smith and their staff are a disgrace.

Not only are their staff and vets heartless, greedy and lacking in empathy, they will also charge you an arm and a leg for basic care. You also have to PAY to set up a payment plan. They just want your money and don't care about your animal whatsoever. I was quoted $2000 for a simple tip of tail amputation. Ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and go to Southern Animal Health, Cheltenham. They quoted me $450 for the entire procedure. They were SO much cheaper and you can tell that they truly care for the animals.

My dog was dying and he had just come out of surgery. The first thing to come out of Dr Esthers mouth was I can t spend long talking to you guys, I finish at 6.30 tonight ...before telling me (or sort of vaguely telling me) that he has a low chance of making it. It s not an easy job, but if your tiredness can overtake your compassion for animals and their owners, you should re-evaluate your career path.
It then took 2 hours in the waiting room to discharge our dog so we could take him to another vet hospital (that saved his life in the end).
Atrocious service. This is my first 1 star review, as I am usually one to let it slide- thought I d put this up though as it may be the difference between life and death for someone s dog.

They are always great here. After many years of my dog having a skin problem, many vets and lots of money Dr Rob was able to diagnose the problem and get us back on track to having a happy boy

Killed Our Baby!

Killed Our Baby!
We took Cara, a native Australian Currawong to the vet from Daylesford at 9pm with a cut wound on her leg. It was very hot and a fly had laid its eggs in the wound which had hatched into tiny maggots. We wanted that to be treated ASAP.
We had hand raised her from a small fledgling after she had fallen from her nest. We co-parented her and fed her with her parents that would fly down and visit her in the day and at night we would keep her inside. We live on a big property with a portion of the land registered as wild life sanctuary. It is a haven with beautiful big trees and a lake. Teeming with wildlife. She had an incredible life being a free and wild bird to come and go as she pleased, while also being a close friend and companion. She had a vibrant personality and was a fighter.
The vet reassured us that she would be given the best care and attention. They would keep in communication with us and ensure they did everything to ensure her survival.
We stayed in the city to await news. We weren t allowed to register her under our name as she is technically wild life. Not an imported pet. Then because she couldn t move her digits (toes) they decided to euthanize her.
There was no phone call, no consultation, nothing!!!
We would have taken her ourselves and cared for her if we had known they would just kill her instead of even trying to heal the wound.
We are absolutely devastated and horrified with how this was handled. Nothing we do now can bring her back, but this system is incredibly flawed and broken.
Absolutely disgusting.

Wonderful care and their vets skills are amazing. They diagnosed my dog in five minutes when my local vet was messing around for weeks. They kept my dog alive for a further 2 good years and this week they provided a very gentle and caring euthenasia for him. The vet and nurse were very kind to me in my distress and I can not thank them enough for how much every staff member cared.

So I took my beautiful little 10yr old Maltese cross ShihTzu into the Lort Smith Vet Clinic about 3pm the other day, after having her right paw being accidentally slammed in the car door.. (Devastating! ) And I waited a couple of hrs in the waiting room after being initially seen by a lovely caring young vet nurse to ensure the situation was under control for the minute. And when we were finally called in for our appt with the vet, they wanted to do ex rays & tests & keep her comfortable in-house overnight there, & keep her comfortable with some pain relief.. The next morning I get a txt from Dr.Johnathan, telling me they'd carried out everything & that she had 2 small fractures in her front right lower paw. So the next afternoon about 3pm I go in to pick her up, & they gave me extensive written after care for the next 4wks for her & explained everything very well. They then bring her out & they'd popped her in a gorgeous pink plaster cast to match her collar, & she seemed very calm & comfortable, & she needs to come back in for cast changes every 4-6days for the next month, being $60 each time I bring her in, aswell as a 4wk progress check up ex ray at the end of the month at $350 aswell, on top of the initial bill being $750 for the initial ex-rays, sedation, the cast & in house care, so the total price at the end of her care in 4wks being a total of around '$1400' all up, & thats including the %25 discount I receive being a concession card holder, without that, it would have been around the $1900-$2000, so ensure you bring this in if u have one as it is a big difference & they dont backdate if u don't have it on the day of admittance. I do feel these prices, (supposedly being the lowest in Melbourne) are a little too high for the treatment she required receiving, being only 2small fractures & no surgery or resetting the leg required, but we all know these rare accidents are the 'downs' of being pet owners, so I am still glad I bought her to the Lort Smith, (disregarding the price), because she has received excellent top level care here, & everyone I delt with was caring, understanding, listened to me, & took the best care of her they could.. And really that's the most important thing overall, as they do direct debit payment plans over a 2wk period starting from a certain date, as long as you have a decent deposit, (like at least $200-$250 or over) depending on how bad the situation of course. I also bought Hills joint care- special expensive food for the next 8-12wks of recovery too, being another 70 but that was a choice of course. But they kept me informed of price & asked if I wanted to go ahead with treatment at all times if some out there simply can't afford it. But all in all, although more pricey than expected, they are a wonderful, large, caring, knowledgeable & well equipped place, I would definitely recommend to anyone with an animal in distress. Thanks so much to all the staff there for care of my little Lily, I appreciate it very very much. You have to remember the staff don't set the prices, management do so.!

The staff try their best but are clearly under the pump and so you don't get the kind of customer service or short wait times you might get at a private vet.

$89 for a standard consultation on a Sunday which I believe is charged at public holiday rates.

Best vet clinic. I take both my assistance dogs there. Because thet are working dogs they go straight to the vet at the first sign of something wrong and they don't charge me to get checked by a nurse. I also takw a family members dog who is terrified of the vet and he gets put in a room to wait if he's to anxious. This dog is a nightmare tp handle at the vet and has to get sedated to have his nails clipped and he screams and fights being sedated. They work with me with the help of vet nurses to handle him. They are the only vet I trust my dogs with. I've had a lot of terrible vet experiences and now wont go anywhere else.

We were able to bring home our new baby with much appreciation I personally have been using the lort smith since early 80's we ad a family have been bringing our pets here and even when the inevitable occurs we have brought plaques to commemorate our to ill to survive pets which I must say are still there and still reminders of our lost babys

my parents, who don't speak english well, took their dog to Lort Smith on the advise of their vet. A week later their dog died. Mum told them that they are pensioners and could they pay their bill off. Yes, just show us your pension card...and the next week they received a letter from Centre Link to advise that Lort Smith had put in a form to deduct $100 per fortnight from their pension! but wait...that isnt all...They are still to receive an invoice to advise them how much the total bill comes to.

So I phoned Lort Smith, got through to finance and was rudely told that this is what they signed for. When I told the guy that this was not possible as they didn't speak english well and they definitely would not have been able to fill in a form, he backtracked and agreed to change this to $50 per fortnight.

Have called twice more to get a total amount owing and three weeks later am still waiting...but wait, Lort Smith is in the meantime garnishing their pension and getting their fortnightly payment.

Shame on you, Lort Smith, truly shame on you!

Great team of vets who do their most to eliminate lengthy waits despite the difficulties they face.

My Cavalier had an ultrasound for his heart murmur by Harold Pook who is incredibly switched on and picked up my Cavalier"s Lipoma, previously overlooked by other vets.

They were wonderful again when he had teeth removed, keeping him comfortable post op and satisfying his dietary needs with boiled Chicken and Rice.

One star is generous. People go to your local vet! I traveled a long way to them after seeing a local which I thought was expensive until I went to Lott smith, not only are they more expensive, they were rough with my animal and told me to take him home and come back in 2 WEEKS for the surgery!!!! He had a 10+cm open wound from the base of his tail!!!!
I rang them before going there, gave them all the information from the vet, and was given an emergency appointment, when I got there they said they are busy come back in two weeks. Why make the appointment and distress an injured animal!!! They never gave me a bill as I left totally appalled, no bill in the mail, no phone call. But I did get mail from there debt collector!
What a joke, you shouldn't be a practicing vet clinic OR a charity organisation!
My cat couldn't wait, my vet was horrified at their 1/ poor treatment, 2/ medical incompetence & 3/ over priced.

Highest pet deaths! No compassion! They are animal killers. There to make money not save lives
Saving dogs/animals is not thier priority...they dont listen to your pet concerns, will not give any possible answers or helpful direction, unless they scare you into the most expensive, unessacery test first, but seem very pushy to put your pet, no matter how minor the problem may be.
They are not animal doctors, they are obviously vet doctors who studied for the money and not for the passion of saving the lives of loved ones. They are a waist of space!!!!!!

These guys do such an amazing job! A friend had to take their cat to an after hours facility but it was too expensive to keep him there for the monitoring that he needed to we collected him from there and took him to the Lort Smith. While we were in the waiting room I saw the staff collect a bunch of different pets for care and they were all treated amazingly. And the way they interact and talk to the pet owners is to be admired, they talk about the animals as though they were human inpatients in hospital- they definitely understand that these precious little pets are a proper part of peoples lives and families. My pets have thankfully not needed any medical care, but if they do I will definitely be bringing them here! You can also buy pet food and things from here, and I saw they have an adoption facility as well.

Wonderful place filled with wonderful hearts! We travel all the way in to have our dogs be seen by them. We also feel good about supporting a genuinely good animal hospital who looks after the community and doesn't turn any animal away - they are all about the animals and not about the $$ at the end of the day (though, they are not a charity and should be respected for the professional work they do - so people, pay your bills and don't abuse their kindness!!). We donate regularly to them each year for this reason, so they can help the less fortunate and attend to animals who deserve every chance at a healthy and happy life. The work you all do is tremendous and we have so much respect and love for you; we will continue to support you each year. You are loved and appreciated!!
