Bad service and makes us feel like criminals. Threatened to send us to debt collectors for medication we never picked up!!! Also ended up in tears after visiting for an emergency, the time I need help most. The tears had nothing to do with my pet but all about the way they made me feel.

Avoid at all costs.

The whole Staff were Amazing and took time to update us on my Granddaughter's puppy who had to have surgery on Saturday. They called with progress reports and made sure my Granddaughter knew what was happening with her puppy. She was happy to hear from them letting her know what was going on each time they did anything and how her puppy was in the evening of the surgery and then on Sunday morning to let her know how she was during the night. As this is my Granddaughter's first puppy and being only 9yrs old my Granddaughter was so pleased to hear about her puppy.

Thank you so much Lort Smith for saving our beautiful cat Ruby's life. The staff have been wonderful. Understanding, answering all our questions and offering us payment options. Not to discredit any other staff member, Dr Harry Ellsmore was amazing to deal with. Incredibly compassionate, understanding and wonderfully spoken. He put us at ease when we had lost hope. Leaving a pet in hospital is always an anxious experience but we knew she was in the best care at Lort Smith. We are forever grateful!

Don't take your dog or other pets here. My dog went here for a simple x-ray and came home with seizures. Had to take him to U-vet in Werribee were they told me that Lort had administered the anaesthetic improperly. I'm now going to be seeking compestaion as I had to spend 3800 at U-VET Hospital for his diagnosis regarding his seizures.

I cannot thank Doctor Shallan enough for finally giving us some answers about our dog evie!!! I can not recommend Lort Smith enough for their commitment to animals and their owners!!! But in particular Shallan has been so amazing with our rather tricky case!! Even our dog loves her.... until she pulls out a thermometer!! Evie is doing so well now

I have taken my pups there for the last 3 years .always been great .waiting times can be long however and for intricate procedures I would probably opt for elsewhere due to the pet turnover and consulting times other than that, very affordable .

Been going here for many years with all of my pets. I spent 30 minutes on the phone waiting to get an appointment. Waited 1 hour 10 minutes for said appointment, whilst other dogs and cats who came after me, went in before me. Questioned staff about it twice. Obvious screw up, I eventually just walked out. Will be going to the Lost Dog's home clinic in the future, vaccinations cost the same, and they see you within 10 minutes of your appointment time

Easily the best vet we've ever been to, the nurse was so calm, gentle and informative and even checked him out outside so we didn't have to go inside with all the other dogs. Thank you for a positive vet experience.

Staffs are friendly, my dog (female puppy) was very nervous when first step into the hospital but she was calm and happy afterward. When I pick her up after desex she is happy and well. The staffs also patiently explained details and after care handling, booked me in immediately on the spot for her next appointment.

I got my cat from there and it was a great experience. He got very sick a few years later and they did a fantastic job saving his life, he had surgery which I couldn't afford so they gave me put me on a payment plan making life so much easier! Won't take my Baxy anywhere else, great work all round.

Terrible experience from the start! This place should not take regular appointments or non emergency surgeries as they are overwhelmed with emergencies!! They have no problem taking your money, but don t communicate and aren t honest with information being provided! So upset at the torment my cat had to go through. They kept my cat there for 2 days, pushing his surgery back, without notifying me and without being able to give me a confirmation as to when it would be done. Never going back there again! Do not recommend to anyone!

Staff are always great, prices reasonable (for a vets) They do great work in rehoming animals. Only down side is there can be a very long wait to get through on the phone - if you call around lunchtime.

Have had two great experiences here, couldn't not share. The first was when I was a struggling student quite a few years ago and my precious dog had developed a stomach twist. The practice was very understanding of my situation and let me put a deposit down and pay the rest off over time. I will be forever grateful to them for this as my dog has never been healthier and I have had many great years with her.
The second was our family dog just the other day had stopped walking and suddenly lost the will to live. The first vet we took him to gave a good prognosis and was 100% convinced of what his condition would be however wanted to charge $2500 to start the process, with the end amount being close to $5000. The consultation fee paid for this was close to $300 and nothing was gained. For our 11 year old dog it was hard to comprehend. We took him to Lort Smith for a second opinion and we quickly received a more accurate diagnosis with the decision to put him to sleep due to a brain tumour was made. As hard as it was we could see that he was struggling and it was unlikely he would make it through the process of trying to fix him. The practice was very understanding and supportive and it was the most peaceful relief as well as sadness we have ever felt. Will be forever grateful for all they have done for us.

We used Lort Smith when our dog Rikki was old and fainting, they provided excellent care and support.

They also helped save a friends dog who was dying of a tick bite. Without their cost effective treatment, my friends much loved dog would have died. I have no hesitation is recommending Lort Smith as a place that provides cost effective, high quality care.

Doctor Anthony, Doctor Juliette, Doctor Sam and Doctor Lianne are the best doctors here. They are very experienced and super professional. I'm so grateful for their hardwork ! My dog was diagnosed with IMT and without their help she wouldn't still be alive now.
Thank you so so much!!!

Great group of people. Very professional. Took great care of my dog when she went in for surgery and always gave me regular updates on her condition.

Lort Smith Animal Hospital is a not for profit organisation that provides less expensive anima L care. The staff and volunteers are excellent.

They provide support for people whose animals need to be euthanused including a Chaplin and condolence cards.

Animals can be purchased for a sliding scale based on age. Senior animals for a donation. There is no charge for visiting the animals.

Amazing staff, amazing veterinary care, can't say enough nice things about them!

Edit: So, after taking the time to read the negative reviews of Lort Smith I feel the need to add some more detail to my positive review. I called for an appointment at 11:30 in the morning and was scheduled for 2pm the same day. I arrived 5 minutes early and was taken in by 2pm. The veterinarian (Jess) was fantastic and did her job incredibly well. The front staff were exceptionally helpful and went out of their way getting me the medicines I needed. In terms of cost, if you think this place is expensive, you should probably look at the costs of other facilities that operate at this level, they are very competitive. Also, please keep in mind when you are concerned about emergency wait times, this is a hospital, dealing with sick animals, they are in the best position to determine which patient needs to be attended to next. We all love our pets so we have to allow for the fact that somebody else might be in more need than we are.

WARNING.... LORT SMITH IS JUST A MONEY HUNGRY JOKE!!
They have NO care or compassion for animals or owners!
I was sent there to get X-rays for my rabbit from my vet as they apparently have better X-ray facilities and on arrival they gave my rabbit IV fluids, Antibiotics, and more pain killers and then told me that I was cold hearted and cruel for wanting to do all that I can to save my rabbit and she needed to be euthanaised or she would die a slow painful death and I'd have to live with knowing that. My vet called the next day and when I told her she couldn't believe they euthanised her as she could have been nursed back to health. The staff are nasty and rude and don't care about animals!
My mum took my brothers cat as she was unwell and they took X-rays and then they told my mum that Trigger would need to be put to sleep straight away and nobody could come and say Goodbye. My mum told them that they had to wait for us and on arrival I wanted to see the X-rays to which the vet showed me on her phone without any details. She then said the big mass in which we saw on the vets phone is possibly cancer and Trigger would be in extreme pain and needed to be put to sleep straight away. She inserted the cannula and shoved through one vial and Trigger was screaming in pain so the vet took her and reinserted another cannula and then gave another vial and the same thing happened and then the vet says she doesn't know why this is happening and she doesn't think that Trigger wants to be put to sleep. She then gave the third injection with Trigger screaming still and biting at her arm she passed away :'(
It was so hard to watch. I still don't know why my mum took her to Lort smith when all they care about is KILLING peoples loved pets :'(
If you have a sick or injured pet take them to VU Vet Werribee they are fantastic and love all animals!

The reception staff, vets and surgeon were wonderful!
They genuinely cared for my dogs wellbeing and my dog going into surgery was nerve wracking but I knew she was in good hands.

They have excellent payment plans if you cannot manage to pay for you animals treatment immediately, however in saying that the cost was reasonable too.

They wasted no time in keeping me informed on my dogs treatment and recovery progress. They explained everything perfectly and I didn't feel that they were just trying to squeeze as much out of my wallet as some other places do.

They are caring towards my pets and I will continue to take my pets here as i know they will be cared for.

They took good care of my dog when he was sick. My only issue is they initial tried to give us the wrong dog when we went to pick him up . I recommend calling first and making an appointment even if it is an emergency if you are bringing an animal in .

Tuesday morning I took my cat to lort smith cause monday night he was showing signs of being blocked,i called monday night and they said watch him bring him in the morning if still issue, upon arival at opening i was greated with smart comments by the smarky receptionist i bit my tongue and booked him in to be looked at they saw him gave him an injection and a bag of medicine said to watch him at home cause they cant feel his bladder properly & feel he doesnt look blocked but he may be and if he doesnt pee by end of day bring him back

Took him home he pee'd with alot of struggle once

Took him back next morning they said vet will put a catheter in and drain him cause hes blocked then vet changed her mind and said they will hold him there to sedate him and try squeeze him

Got a call an hour after we got home saying they need us to go back cause they cant handle him and need help. So my partner took the tram back when she got there they said dont worry we got him sedated and checked him we will see how he goes and give an update, few hours later ...oh so we will put a catheter in him and drain him over night should be fine by the morning..

Next day they said as an update hes doing great being hand fed he was drained we will take the catheter out and you can take him home. I picked him up at 6 he was in his cage SUPER stressed eyes dialted so wide no sedative no dose of medicine they said to take him home hes fine gave me another bag of medicine to bring home nd give him a hills diet food.

Got home at 6pm.. he didnt eat was mega stressy double his size and full of urine still we called em and asked if it was normal what we should do they said to watch him nd give him his meds if need be bring him back next day.. alll night from 6pm til 6am next day he was back and forward to the toilet struggling no pee not eating/drinking i gave him one of his muscle relaxers at midnight he slept 2 hours then woke up did the same , stayed all night on the couch with him he slept a bit longer with me , we both woke up at 6am I was drenched in his pee but he was still not eating nd very stressed and couldnt pee

Partner and my parents took him back next morning they were all sympathetic nd said no charge for this visit (which they charged medicine and didnt process our pay plan prior nd almost tried to double charge) they put him in a room with my partner said to watch him and theyl be back when they got back gave him a sedative that would ease the pain and help him eventually pee hopefully nd calm him and that the tests the other day said his urine tract all this time since the first time he had issues last year had super large crystals & were undetected in prior tests cause they were so large, so he will need Cd food to help but for now just give him checken and "cat crack treats" to get meds in he will be ok if not consider later on in life an operation or euthansia

Took him home he was relaxed & out if it from the pain killers still no pee but he was in pain and just leaking urine everywhere
So we took him to malvern emergency vet instead told em everything looked at him once felt his bladder with ease and said his bladder is double the size it should be he's mega blocked and his kidneys are risking almost failure if he waits longer.. they said they could drain him nd send him back to lort smith next day to fix him as option 1 I strongly declined him going back there.

Option 2 Needle in blader to drain him
But both options would be temp last option we could do an op to basically switch his urinary gland into a females and fix the issue for good

So we did the operation they fixed him by 330am & hes now back home recovering fine ..peeing easy and eating and the blockages should not happen anymore we just need to monitor his stress and weight nd he should be fine long term. They even helped reduce the bill to not add to my now useless lort smith debt.

Thanks for taking my money lort smith I will never trust your vets again you almost killed my cat.

Had a dog in for a post op. The wait was reasonable 45 minutes. But it took about 30 minutes to see someone to pay our bill and make another appointment. Not, very efficient, 3 computers up to 5 staff present, only one person serving?

This Vet is supposedly one of the best in Melbourn...

This Vet is supposedly one of the best in Melbourne for their 24hour access and emergency and discounted services however this is at the expense of the staff having no care for your animal. I brought in my dog (staffy/ridgeback) after she had not been eating and drinking for 2 days, and prior to this I noticed some behaviour changes like not being very energetic. On the way to the Lort Smith my dog urinated pure blood to which I was in panic. Upon entering the Lort Smith my dog collapsed on the floor and did not want to move. It was clear she was in severe pain. The nurse had a look at my dogs gums and they were pale. The nurse looked at me and said "this is very bad. What have you been doing to your dog, She is dehydrated and is aneamic." I was appalled that she judged me as an owner as if I had neglected my pet without having looked at the medical history of my dog who had an already compromised immune system from previous surgery of a cyst in the lymph nodes and was on medication. The nurse assumed my dog was suffering for a long time when in fact my dogs health deteriorated rapidly within a few days. She then took my dog on the tray and as she carelessly pushed her, my dog fell off to the floor. I was angered by her carelessness towards my weak dog to which she then denied treating my animal. I was shocked and devastated that the nurse was turning my animal away in such a life threatening critical condition. I asked to speak to another nurse or vet and she denied and then called security, demanding us to leave. On the Lort Smith wedsite it states they will not turn away an animal and after hours there was no other emergency hospital until Werribee. I have donated to this vet as I once supported their practice and have had other pets come here. Never have I seen such unprofessionalism and malpractice conducted in an animal health care setting. This nurse had no sympathy nor mercy for my animal and do not believe she belongs in her profession.

Lort Smith hospital is the most professional (and cheapest) veterinary practice in Melbourne. On my visit I was called in before my appointment to time and was out before that time as well. Pensioner's get 25% discount and there is a huge range of services.

Although they eventually diagnosed and (only PARTIALLY) treated my young 11month old kitten for a blocked urethra, there is just no way I would recommend this place as an option for veterinary care especially if you are able to get to your local animal hospital or vet. My family and I are incredibly unhappy with the treatment and experience with the Lort Smith Animal Hospital and will be hopefully never go there again.

I was seen by Dr Jane and she is so lovely and professional. She made a good point that if my cat is an indoor cat then it s not necessary to get the FIV vaccine because he won t be wondering off outside and getting in contact with potential infected cats. Most vets would try to make a sale rather than think about what s best for your wallet and your pet. Worth the travel to come here! Parking can be a little of a pain but otherwise I can t complain about anything else off this wonderful place

Don't go to RSPCA as made plans for payment plan and yes they agreed, drove all the way to Burwood and then after 6hrs said oh you would be better to take to Lort Smith but also so expensive. Thought the job was to h help especially when your dog is hit by drag racers going through the fence. But will let you go on payment plan 8f you can pay half up front, pretty dissappointed that a non for profit won't help unless you pay upfront. With the $ left by ppl in wills and donations
