Turn of the last century Hotel, modernized. Small, clean rooms. If a place to sleep is all you need, this is a great deal. Plus it has it's own doorway to the 24-hour restaurant right next door (for those late night munchies).

This hotel is a cockroach invested relic of the 50s. My stay was a nightmare. I was booked for a week and after leaving thefront desk I approached the elevator. It is truly from the 50s. You have to pull one door open and then try to keep the gate open while you try to get you luggage in. Then I enter my room and find cockroaches, fraud carpet, peeling paint, caulking all over the showing wall. The tiny air conditioner barely cooled the room. Then I went to shower after washing cockroaches down the drain. I waited and waited and waited for the water to get wArm. It takes about 10 Minutes of wasting gallons to get even what I would call not cold. Avoid this nightmare. Ramada should be embarrassed. Avoid this place
Is older for sure. Can tell it was quite elegant in its day. Nice things now, though. 24 hr restaurant, roof top lounge with beautiful view and well kept furniture. You do take your own food and drinks up. You walk up one level from the 10rh floor to the roof. Rooms are small, but clean with everything you need. Staff really nice and professional.
"Vintage." It was what would be expected of price for this area. Staff very nice, building needs updates but relatively clean and in good repair.
We had a street view over the night clubs and the building has 1960s insulation so you could overhear conversations from the street below from the 5th floor. Things quiet down around 1 or 2am and stay as such through mid morning.
Accommodations were not as promised, though. Calling my bed a queen was a stretch because it was definitely a full sized bed (I'm 5'4" and could touch both edges of the bed). The building has two very old elevators that have manual door/gate entries. One of the elevators was out of order and the functioning one had a capacity of 4. Yes, 4. It operates safely, but I decided to do a bit of stair climbing during this visit. It was a true 5 floors as the building is Lobby, 1, 2, 3, etc...
All in all, a decent value for the $230 after taxes for 2 nights, but not the typical comforts you expect in an updated hotel.
The room wasn't too big and unfortunately no window could let you get a bit of a sight of San Diego - one was wall up and the other overlooked the inside of the building. However the stay was good, very smooth check in and check out procedures, thumbs up for the valet parking as there's little place to park in the centre of San Diego. Very good place to enjoy the heart of the city if you're staying very little time.
Location is great since I was going to a convention at the convention center. The downside is that it's a pretty outdated hotel and could really use a facelift.
one elevator broken, the other one rather slow; everything rather old, not always in good shape; room service not perfect. people say San Diego is expensive - bur one should still get something in return for your money.
The price was good for downtown but they nickel and dime you for so many fees. You have to pay $27 for valet, $10 to refrigerator and so much more. No continental breakfast either. The room was small but I understand for being a historic building.
I checked in and go up to my room to find a man sleeping there. They had to get me another room. Then, I got stuck in elevator had to get out in basement and go up 7 flights of stairs with suitcase to get to my room. The elevator is a night mare with suitcase. My room was extremely old, dirty, and smelled terrible. I asked for refund for both nights since there was a man sleeping in my room and they only gave me one night. DO NOT GO HERE.
Employees don't know what they are doing. My reservation was for a double queen got booked for a single. The rooms are old and musty. The elevator will literally kill you.
My wife and I stayed because it was close to the convention center and it was one of the worst experience we have ever had. The bathroom was disgusting and there was mold everywhere. I wish I could post the picture. The room smelled so bad . The carpet was disgusting and dirty. The room was so small I felt better at a hotel 6 when I was younger. The bed was in bad shape and the pillows we're old and had Stan's on them. This was turly one of the worst places I have ever been to. Please go see it before you pay.
Very old school building if that's what you like. Nothing special just a regular room. It's old and not crazy clean either. Don't expect anything fancy.
The historic hotel was fantastic - I loved the traditional elevator. The staff was friendly and helpful. The downtown location was perfect for walking to any restaurant you could imagine.
It's nice but very old. The building is old, the elevator is old, the feel of the hotel is old. They renovated it as best they can. Great bed. Very small rooms, bathroom and shower. 24 hours restaurant and room service! Good perk
I stayed last year after a cruise out of long beach.. I looked at the reviews before hand and had an idea of what to expect..What i did not expect is an amazing rooftop with an awesome view and refreshing cool.
The room is beyond small, not recommended with children or for those that want to hang out in your room. This is a historical building in an excellent location for 40-80 % cheaper than most hotels in the area... Consider that when you are shopping. I thought the hotel was cool and neat, others obviously had greater expectations, or received bad service.. The breakfast burrito was 16.00 and worth every penny. It is large enough for 2-3 people.
Old and pretty ugly, cost 89 for night but I think for that price you can find something better, is noise and we want to cancel but cost 50 usd so we stay but I don t recommend.
It is clean and almost odorless compared to the cheap price. Instead, it's an inconvenient place because the old hotel has a fixed shower and bathroom.
The room comes with a complimentary set of ear plugs. Seeing that on the bed as soon as you walk in the room should give you an indication of how bad this place is. It's an old hotel, I get that they're trying to go for nostalgia, but it just comes off as nasty. The room is very small with the ironing board hiding under the bed, but you don't really have any space to use it anyway. They haven't updated the heating and cooling system for over ten years so you can't really close the window, making it very loud at night if you get a room above the street (I was unfortunate enough to get one). There was mold in the shower because there's no ventilation fan in bathroom. Who knows the last time the carpet was replaced so make sure to bring flip flops. Other problems people had in my group: multiple malfunctioning toilets, damp moldy smelling rooms, and large amounts of noise from neighbors. I don't recommend this hotel unless it's a last resort. The roof is nice.
I love, love, love this hotel! My oldest son and I went to San Diego to see my youngest son graduate from the Marine corp. I can not speak highly enough of our time there. Every single person was genuinely nice - not because they had to...it was just their nature. I loved the old school elevator! And the rooms were great! The bed and pillows were like sleeping in a dream. I can't thank Sydney, Freddy, Liz and Katheryn (and others but forgot names) enough for their hospitality. I'm already planning a trip to go back in April. Thank you all so much for making this trip such a memorable experience. It was truly a blessing!
Clean & dry, nice helpful staff. Little things were off like poor phone reception, intermittent WiFi, blinds don't work. Plenty of good hot water for showers. Convenient to gaslamp district.
This was a cool, nostalgic place. Built in 1913, has a lot of features of the original hotel (coolest (albeit, kinda scary) elevator, staircases and hallways very reminiscent of an early 20th century building). Staff was awesome! If you stay here, you must check out the rooftop!
Got a great deal through priceline, and stayed with a couple friends. Elevators are old school and slow. The hotel has an awesome rooftop patio, and it is also close to a lot of the bars, restaurant, and clubs.
Location was great, hotel is old and unique, beds are comfy. Front desk was a little hard to talk to not the greatest customer service I've had but everything was good.
It is a good hotel, a little different from the surrounding area as it is located in an old building, and still maintain the original elevators of 1912 (or at least the speed of ascent and appearance). The rooms are clean, the biggest disadvantage being the situation with the elevators that are a bit reduced in space and slower than going up the stairs. There are only showers in the bathrooms and window cooling, which makes it more difficult to find a good temperature for the room. On the good side there is a safe for your things and coffee machine. The building is interesting and very nice despite being so old, it is a good option if you do not plan to spend a lot but still want to be close to downtown San Diego.
The rooms are medium size. The chick I met at the waterfront during the CRSSD festival stayed here for the weekend. I think her name was either christine or justine. The beds were stiff so I couldn't get too comfortable when we were doing it in certain positions. The staff were able to accommodate us with extra towels because oh how wet she got. The pillows are soft enough for her to bite onto as well as firm to use as an angle when hitting that g-spot. The showers were kinda small but enough size to have a second quickie in the next morning. There was no free breakfast, that was a bummer, but the bar next door/downstairs had really good food. For a great nights stay for free and dessert on the house, I'd recommend this place.
Good stay at a reasonably historic, no frills hotel. Given the area, prices are very reasonable. Elevator is small but fun, given the old-timey feel. Parking at the hotel is valet-only at $40 per night with in/out privileges- if you do not need in/out and are parking for less than 10 hours, there are some cheaper lots nearby (though check the rates- not all are the same). Otherwise, most lots in the area are also $40 per night. Overall, if price is a concern or if you just need a bed to rest in between walking around gaslamp, this is a great option.
loved the vintage feel and the location can't be beat if you want to experience downtown nightlife. if you're looking for a quiet retreat, this is probably not the place as it's pretty busy and loud. the rooftop terrace was gorgeous with a great view. friendly staff. minor complaints about the room- shower head apparatus was broken/dysfunctional and a few things felt a little old/outdated. overall we had a very nice stay.
Right in the middle of everything.. bars, mall, lots of food. Walk to everything. Roof top very nice veiws. You can take your own drinks up on top. Street parking is mon-sat 8am to 6pm you have to pay the meters. Valet is $30. 24 hr restaurant bar and pub is attached to the building.
Worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The staff was inhospitable. The plumbing is horrible. I had to change room middle of the night due to backflow of the dirty water to the basin.
Staff is nice and friendly and the room was comfy (but pretty small, the queen size bed took up most of the room and it was pretty tight moving around the space). The AC was mostly quiet and worked. There were two chairs, both had stains though. They also charge extra for some odd things. Want a mini fridge/microwave? $10 per night EACH. At least the wifi was free. No continental breakfast offered either btw. The sitting area on the roof offers a nice view and is open to smoking, which could be a positive or negative (negative for me). Overall nice old hotel but super minimal.
Personally I did not find this hotel charming at all. The room I was initially given was small and I do not believe the bed was a queen as advertised. The shower was so small you could barely turn around . Lots of mold around the shower, sink was a slow drain and smelled. Noise from the bar next bar extremely loud and continued well into the night. After 3 request, we were given a different room. Slightly bigger bathroom and bed which made the stay durable. Only 2 elevators..one stayed out of order for the entire 5 days of the trip. Waits for service were often 15 to 20 minutes., Front desk staff could be more helpful and courteous.
Good location to convention center and tons restaurants in the Gaslamp District..
We spent a 3 day at the hotel. Its old but clean. The elevators are very old school but efficient. We are timeshare people so staying in a hotel doesn't happen two often. I would go back. Be sure to eat at the restaurant and if you are hungry try the massive burrito. It is hug. Location is great plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Light rail is close too
Please, please keep an open mind and remember this a historic hotel! This is truly a place where your own attitude can make or break your satisfaction. Ceiling tiles, crown molding, chandeliers, not to mention wonderful staff and cleanliness, all make a stay here charming and enjoyable. The view from the roof is SPECTACULAR! Our small single room accommodated myself and my 6 1/2 ft husband quite well (historic = high ceilings which balances the small sq footage so it doesn't feel cramped). And yes, this is in the Gaslamp District, so if you're not into, historical perspective, high energy locations and the sound of a mosquito wakes you, find another hotel and save your bad review for more legitimate issues. :)
Greeted quickly when I walked thru the door. Rooms are extremly dated. No noise issues and stayed on a Saturday and Super Bowl Sunday night. Close to everything. Beds were decent, plenty of pillows.
The location of the hotel is right at the end of the gaslamp District so it's close to lots of places for drinks and food. The service here isn't bad. Keep in mind this is a historical building so has a Victorian charm like old pipes and oddly placed windows but overall not bad.
Service was great. The bed was really cozy and the room was nice. I appreciated the extra water in the room. My room was a little dirty - there were some weird black hairs or fibers all over the desk - but that was all. The elevators are quaint, but honestly pretty annoying if you have multiple items of luggage. I would be nice if you can prop the gate and door open while you enter and exit, and then close everything before the elevator moves. Overall was a good experience and I would stay there again.
Small room but if you're looking for a crashpad in downtown you can't beat the location. Staff was nice and helpful. Street level noise is not a deal breaker.
What a dump. Old and run down. Screaming and sirens all night long and zero noise insulation. Rate indicated that breakfast was included which was not actually true - hotel gives you $7.95 voucher which can be used at the restaurant but only covers 5 possible items and then doesn t include a drink or cover the tax so you have to come out of pocket. I wouldn t recommend this hotel period.
Excellent view, excellent location, nice and friendly staff. Clean room. The old elevator looks cool but after a couple of days becomes annoying. Bottom line: good value for money.
Old. Noisy. Expencive. Gross. Tiny. Inhospitable. Do not stay here. This is the worst hotel in all of California. Would rate 0 stars if I could. Everything in the room is too small. The shower is as wide as a microwave. The elevators will literally kill you if you manage to get inside them without dying from the flood of homeless people outside first. DO NOT STAY HERE AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
