The car was great, but the representative handling...
The car was great, but the representative handling the paperwork when I picked up the car aggressively and deceptively tried to get me to sign up for unwanted extra services. He became petulant when I declined the extra services and insisted that he provide a rental contract with correct terms.
At the pickup location near Denver International Airport, the clerk tried to upsell me a more expensive car by falsely claiming that my assigned car didn't have a fold-down back seat to accommodate skis. I declined. He then tried to sell me extra insurance. I declined. Even after I declined these extras, he tried to get me to sign and initial for these and other extra services I had either declined or had not requested. The contract he hurriedly tried to get me to sign called for paying substantially more than my reservation had quoted. When I saw the overcharge, I began reading the contract more carefully, which prompted a petulant remark. After reading the contract, I asked him to print out a contract with the correct charges. He angrily tore up the contract with the overcharges. To my amazement, he then pulled out another contract -- one with the correct charges. To my amazement, it became clear that he had been withholding the already-printed contract with the correct charges as shown on my reservation, apparently in the hope of cajoling, bullying, or tricking me into agreeing to a more expensive contract with extras I didn't want.
By then I was very suspicious of the integrity of the personnel in this office, so I requested a copy of the version of the contract that I'd actually signed. The representative stated that I had a copy. I pointed out that the copy he gave me was unsigned, and that I wanted a copy of the contract I'd actually signed. He refused. I asked him why I couldn't have a copy. He said it was "against their procedure." An older colleague of his came by and reiterated that it was against their policy to give customers copies of the contracts they'd signed. I asked them whether they had a photocopier. No answer. I told them that they had better change their photocopying policy. In a huff, the clerk wordlessly disappeared and shortly reappeared with a photocopy of the signed contract.
I'm not sure whether the few dollars I saved over eight days by renting from Payless was worth the unpleasant experience at the counter. But the rest of the experience was good. The car was great -- just the right size, very comfortable, and it got great mileage. It was muddy on the outside at pickup, but that was no big deal, since in the winter it would have been muddy after the first hour of driving anyway. The inside was reasonably clean. The return process was fast and painless. The shuttles to and from the airport seemed to run about every 15 minutes. Payless's location was convenient -- nestled side by side with most of its competitors on an access road paralleling the freeway leading to the Denver airport.
