The worst experience ever. This company is fraudulent. I don't understand how they're still around. Double charged us. Did a bunch of wacky credits and charges/authorizations. Then eventually settled on charging me twice, trying to hide the charges by spacing out the dates hoping I wouldn't notice. Now I have to go through the disputes process since there's no customer service. The worst ever.

When I got to the counter I was offered extra insurance multiple times, I had to refuse it five times after telling them I had already signed up for insurance through the website (kayak). "I wouldn't recommend them" Then why is it offered on the website? I also had to refuse pre-payed gasoline multiple times. This high-pressure check-in process to try upselling unneeded charges wasted my time and made the whole experience feel cheap. Would not recommend

I just rented a car yesterday. I declined the insurance coverage, but, when I reviewed my contact, I was charged full coverage. I reviewed my contract and had them change it, but, was still charged for supplemental insurance. In addition to this, I got the car and the gas was empty, but my contract listed that gas was full. A lot of shady business practices going on with payless. I plan to take a photo of my the car when I return it and get a confirmation of final receipt.

We had a reservation for an intermediate car for $11/day. when we got there at 12:30 AM to pick up the car they told us that the car I have reserved is not available and we have to pay EXTRA $25/day (~200% higher than the original reserved price) for another car. My wife is sick and she was suffering a huge amount of pain. I told them the story but the lady behind the counter made fun of us and told me that if you want to help your wife pay the extra money! I tried to call their headquarters but they didn't pick up the phone in that time of the night. We couldn't get the car anyway. These people are so dishonest and rude and they are really doing such a dirty business. I wish I could sue them.

I was sent over to Payless from Fox because Fox did not have my car (SeaTac airport). I was promised a price match and when I went to return the car, it was much higher, twice the price. This is a scam. I will never recommend Payless, nor use it again and will go with Hertz and recommend them from here on out. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I travel and rent often and this was the worst experience I ve had. Now I have to spend my time disputing the charges to get the difference back from what was supposed to be $175 to a $333 charge. Never book with Payless aka, PayMore and get scammed.

This is the WORST car rental experience EVER. Do NOT rent from this company, I rented a car from the Boston Logan Payless and had booked a mid size vehicle for my 5 days. What I got was a small ford focus that was filthy dirty inside and out with huge stains on most of the seats, the car stunk like cigarettes when you turned on the fan, it shook really bad when you accelerated, the gas gauge and mileage odometer didn't work properly so you had no idea what kind of gas you had in the car. Some of these issues like the dirty condition I could have complained about on site if I wanted to drag my luggage all the way back into the terminal to stand in line again to tell the attendant about it because this is what she told me I had to do If I found any problems. The mechanical issues were not noticed immediately, and upon my return it was too early and no one was awake yet to make my issues known. I was charged over $400 for this rental and when I did contact payless to express my issues they informed me they were sorry but there executive manager said it was not their problem and they would do nothing to make it right by crediting part of the cost back to my credit card. I have contacted them 3 times now and they have just said it's to bad. DO NOT SPEND YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE.

Same as everyone else. Got one price on Expedia when I booked the vehicle, then when I went in to pickup the vehicle I upgraded my car, and was told the extra charge, agreed to that, left with my paperwork before looking at it all because I was running late since they took way too long at the airport, and the charges were way over what was agreed. I called corporate and the office I rented the vehicle at, and got constant run arounds, and no explanation as to my charges. Tried to save money, but you know the old saying, "if it's looks to good to be true, it probably is" avoid these jack wagons, go to a reputable company and avoid the headache.

Great rental car but extending the contract has been a disaster. No Americans to talk to on either or the phone numbers given or the alternate number I found online..and you CAN NOT get through to the seatac location.

No one can help me. No one can send me a confirmation. No one can even view the contract. I have wasted hours of my life I will never get back. Not a great way to spend a vacation. But again, the car is a great car! Not a great company, apparently.

Without a doubt the worst car rental company out there from a customer service perspective. I had a reservation at the SEATAC airport. Waited in line for an hour (only 8-10 customers in line). When I got to the agent with my reservation, he told me they had no mid-size cars and I would be put on
"standby list". Also indicating it might be 2-3 hour wait. THIS IS WITH A RESERVATION that I was on time for. I voiced concern about the wait. He said: "Fine if you don't want to wait, I'll cancel your reservation". He canceled the reservation I made week prior. He also cancelled other customers reservations while I was standing in line. When I booked the car it was at $15 per day. The day I went to pick up the cars they were going for $50-60 per day. Obviously, they are looking to get the higher rates by cancelling the reservations of lower rate customers. AVOID PAYLESS AT ALL COSTS. Chances are you'll get ripped off.

We found out that the negative reviews were due to prior management that have been removed. Also, this location is partnered with Avis.

If I could give them a zero I would!! So upset! I booked online for a economic car when we get there the lady at the front desk offers us another economic car at no extra cost. Well that no extra cost yeah right they not only added a charge for an upgrade but also insurance and road side assistance that we had already decline!! I've tried contacting them and they either never pick up or they tell me that a manager Jennifer or Louis will call me back in 72 hours .. it's been a weeks and nothing.
I've also tried there customer service another disappointment. They say they will call me or email me back with an answer. I've gotten niether a call or a email. And when I call and ask for a manager they tell me that they don't have one there that they just answer the disputes and sent them to customer service. This been over 2 weeks!!!

really worried going in based on reviews but they had a car for us and they didn't hassle us for upgrades or unneeded insurance. We arrived at midnight and they put us right in a serviceable car. Friendly cashier and checkout. Our trip took us to Portland where we returned the vehicle three hours late with no extra charge. Overall good experience at half the price of Budget. Would rent there again.

You may think you're getting a deal, but after you Wait in line for over an hour, while the workers are busy taking selfies, you'll be told you HAVE to sign certainty forms and then be charged for insurance you said no to. Then when you get to car, you get to find a left over bloody Kleenex, from the people before. When you try to call the company just a short hour after you get the car, there are no managers to talk to and apparently charges can't be disputed?!?! I honesty have never heard of such a thing. Not once was anything explained to me, I was simply told I had to sign papers. I'm now out $150 I should have, since during my original reservation online, I stated I didn't need insurance. Now no one is available to talk to. How ironic! I encourage everyone to RUN as far away from this company as possible, it would be well worth it to pay more for a car somewhere else.

It is the worst car rental company I've ever visit. Plain and simple. Booked a standard car for a week at weekly rate $144. Arrived near mid night on 31th of last month and was extremely tired. I was tricked to upgrade to a SUV without clearly notification of charges by the representative. At the end, when the bill came and it shows the weekly rate is $2385.84. It is ridiculous. Even if I booked it through their website, the weekly rate of the most expensive SUV would've been $899. It is unbelievable they charged me Jeep Renegade at weekly rate $2385.84. I am speechless. I am not sure why they call themselves Payless Car Rental. It should be Pay Most Car Rental. I filed a ticket to the customer service. First I was told within 72 hours I should get called back. after four days, nothing happened. I called back and was told I should get a call back on same day or a day later. Nothing happened again. Two days late, I called again. I was told they will call me ASAP. They are just keeping to answer you ASAP but no real action is taken. The worst company on the earth is Payless Car Rental.

With a credit card on file there is no reason one should have to leave a security deposit. Moreover, 14 days for return of that deposit after the car has been returned is a dirty business practice. Although the car itself was fine, I will never rent here again.

Awful. Don't rent from them. We reserved an SUV because we knew we had a lot of luggage and needed the space. No SUVs available when we arrived and we were offered a mid-sized car as an alternative. They had no idea when an SUV would be available, but we were welcome to wait. I am not sure what the purpose of a reservation is.

This is the most dishonest car rental company I have ever dealt with. When I rented the car, I declined all coverages. The agent handed me a sheet to sign that supposedly indicated that. I trusted her and initialed the boxes without scrutinizing whether she did what I asked. However, the agent -- without telling me -- signed me up for a special satellite radio rental that I neither asked for nor knew about. When I went to return the car I was charged $24 for this feature. I was told that I had explicitly signed up for it, even though the agent never went over that feature that she signed me up for. Payless has declined to reverse the charges for this, despite my explanation to customer service. (I tried to argue about it when I returned the car at Newark Int'l Airport but there was no agent on duty so I had to leave the car with the Budget agent). Having read other reviews about Payless, I see that this is a general pattern. They prepare the paperwork to add on unwanted features and then rely on customers to sign and initial without reading the fine print. I have never had another company pull such a trick. I would avoid this company like the plague.

Asked about renting a child car seat and they ended up trying to more than double the cost of our reservation. Said that b/c we "modified" our reservation that it updated the rental cost per day to current rates. So, now we have to lug a huge child seat across the country in order not to pay $700 for a rental car for four days. Will not use again.

3. Filed for claim, the team insisted "records showed I accepted the coverage for the rental" without providing me evidence as I requested.
4. Agent at counter lied about their "loss and weight" insurance policy trying to get customers "accidentally" accept the coverage.

Solution:
Called credit card company to dispute $130 overcharge.

Lessons learned: never come here back again.

Once I returned the car back they had charged me for additional driver(without asking me the name and ID of additional who never existed plus they did not have the name of that additional in file which is fraud in my opinion) and roadside assistance. no manager in airport to fix it, then they gave me a business card to call the manage so I called that number the day after but the number was customer service and not Seattle airport one. they created a ticket and after a few hour they closed it without telling me with this comment that it was my fault to no check, while they don't have any info about additional drive(because I never asked for that),

I was not provided a pro-rated refund having returned the car two days early after I deemed the air quality unsafe to breath after advisement by multiple government agencies to remain indoors. I preferred not to remain in Washington state during the wide spread fires and smoke within the state and in Oregon and California. I would hope that Payless would take into account its customers' health needs during an environmental emergency rather than implicitly preferring them to remain within the state under the rental agreement.

Update 9/24: I received a refund BEFORE Payless had contaced me through this review. Initially, I was not provided a refund and had to submit a claim via e-mail, which wasn't terribly hard. The e-mail must have been buried in the e-mail thread. Sorry, Payless! Overall, great time with great customer service at pick up and drop off, not mention driving a brand new Jeep Compass TrailHawk with only 5K miles on it. I'm sorry for the confusion and poor review.

Lots of negative reviews here, so I went in expecting the worst. Instead, I was extremely surprised. Customer service was excellent--staff were friendly, helpful, and polite. Having previously dealt with Hertz, I was pleasantly surprised after asking for no extra insurance, etc, and receiving exactly what I asked for. At no point were fees 'tacked on' or 'snuck in'. I believe the price quoted on their site was more or less exactly what I paid.

The only downside of the experience was when my requested car (compact) wasn't available, I was offered an "upgrade" to a bigger, hungrier, and more cumbersome Jeep. This was about as far from an upgrade as possible for a weekend of driving around the city. However, I can't really blame them for availability when my flight arrived at 10PM. However, I would be nice if upgrades remained at least somewhat similar to the requested car.

As far as the SEATAC location goes, I would definitely recommend Payless to anyone looking for a cheap rental.

Honestly, I was very skeptical when renting from Payless because in my experience "you get what you pay for". The rental rate was less than 1/3 of all other desks, but we were on a budget so figured we'd give it a shot.

BEST SERVICE YET!

Our check in took less than 5 minutes, we were upgraded to a better model because it was a busy day and the economy cars had already been booked out (for free). There were no hidden fees, services, taxes, etc that we normally see with other car rental agencies.

For our four day trip we paid less than $60 overall, and honestly IT WAS A STEAL. We will definitely be renting from Payless again.

This company is awful, I would never rent with them again. When I picked up the car that I had booked online, I was told that the car I was getting would have manual windows and locks, which I had seen nothing about on the website when I picked my car. For "only $10 extra a day" I could get a car with automatic windows and locks. I said no, because they had already added $70 of additional charges that I was not made aware of when booking. We picked up our car and low and behold, it had automatic doors and locks. The whole situation felt really slimy and like they were scamming us to get the extra $10 a day. I have never seen a rental car with manual locks and windows! I was really frustrated that the cost of my car had gone up from the quoted $130 to $200. The customer service was poor. It was just a bad experience all around.

Pay less at Dallas Fort Worth Texas had a horrible customer service, I specifically told the service agent that I was going to return the car with full tank, only had 1 driver,l and did not want any other additional coverage. The agent hurried through the signing of the paperwork and of course after 5 hours on the air, the tendency is just to sign. But I did repeat my requests twice to confirm that it was not the case. When I dropped off my car, the agent said I had to call. I tried calling the location but it kept gong to the hotline, had to call 5 times and had to open a ticket to request removing the charges. One agent said that it was standard to charge the fuel and after they checked my fuel, it will be refunded. Another agent told me that I had to put in a ticket. I received an e-mail the next day and said that my ticket was closed. I will NEVER use this service again, I will use Hertz and Enterprise who are very upfront with the charges and very professional and accurate on their charges. DO NOT USE this service, they have horrible customer service! Just getting a hold of the service agent at the location is next to impossible.

I reserved a car and was given a price for the days that I needed it (have an email to prove) and once I got to the car rental, they told me it was going to be a lot more money than what I reserved. I tried to get answers and kept getting told that they have a new system and just to call corporate. I asked to speak to their manager Louis and they told me he wasn't there that day. I ended up finding another employee and asked for louis and he said he was upstairs. I told him that I was told by another employee that he wasn't there and he said there always is a manager on duty. Long story short, no one could get me a manager and no one would tell me their names. I also asked for the days that Louis would be in and they told me they can't tell me that. I asked for a copy of my signed agreement and they told me that they don't have to give me a copy. I filed with BBB and with my credit card. I also called corporate to let them know of everything that happened.

Just avoid this. Pay more for a different car rental company. They may have the lowest initial rate but the game is to hack away at weary travelers at the rental car counter at the airport. They will somehow get an extra fee out of you. It is the kind of business practice that should be punished, and we can do it by not renting from them.
