Very cool vibe and a nice place for a laid back dinner. The food didn't blow me away, but it's clear they make an effort to choose high quality ingredients and have a relatively unique offering with 'pinsa'. Mix that with a historic vibe and it's a good one-time stop.

We had a great experience on the rooftop here for our company anniversary dinner. 7 people came and we had pizzas, cocktails, appetizers, wine, and desert. Delicious socially distant activity.
If you are in the area even 20 minutes away and want to sit down and truly enjoy a meal, you must stop by here. Rustic italian foods plus cured meats. The atmosphere is equally rustic and relaxing. They serve perfectly complimentary Italian wines along with the food. I was not disappointed, and if you appreciate wonderful food you will not be disappointed either. The pinsas are a light rustic flatbread similar to pizza but more delicate. The toppings are very similar and high quality. I had the Pignola which was wonderfully balanced with the salt of anchovies. I also haf the wild boar sausage which was served with salted filberts (I think). Again they paid atten to how the combination of flavors work together so you can vary the food experience by eating bits alone or in combination for different flavors. Well done, I think this may be my favorite restaurant in San Francisco.
Pinsa (a lighter and softer italian pizza) is very good and the place is interesting. The neighborhood is not that great, but overall this place must be visited
The pinsas were a wonderful change from a pizza. Lighter, airier and crunchier than pizza dough, they let the toppings do the work for them. We had a special made of potatoes, green beans and almond pesto which was outstanding. Rustic ambiance with some nice antique pictures of Rome. A bit pricey but well worth it for the unique taste.
This place is in the heart of tenderloin. Our waitress was very nice and professional. I tried the very famous sausage pizza but I was disappointed with my dish. The cheese was fresh but rest of the pizza was bland. The amount of sausage on the pizza was next to nothing. I added chilli oil which jazzed up the pizza little. the pizza base was fresh but it was not savory for my taste. Maybe will try again and order something else
Pizza restaurant in the same alley as Dottie's off of 6th. Same owners as 54 Mint.
Porchetta - 3/5 - Sliced thin, lots of olive oil. Infernetto - 4/5 - Has some kick to it, nduja is tasty. Unique topping. Quadraro - 2/5 - Tasted like standard pizza.
Overall, I know they claim it's not pizza but it's just too similar not to lump it in the same category. Although I don't think I would return, Montesacro is definitely "OK."
Gorgeous, bubbly, light-crust (and perhaps healthier) variation of pizza, topped with inventive flavours and beautifully crafted, with amazing service and ambience! My two faves are the mortadella-stuffed focaccia, and the cured tuna Pinsa -- both out of this world. As of February 2020, they started opening for Sunday brunch and there were plenty of tables available for groups big and small. Grazie mille, Montesacro!
Very much enjoyed my lunch here. It reminded me of the vacation I took in Rome, no really it did. The service was great and the ambiance was nice as well. The food though, the food was yummy. The bread / crust was great on the flatbreads. I'd probably skip the salad next time though, not that it wasn't great, it just wasn't worth the money to me. But the flat breads and drink selection totally made up for it.
Honestly some of the best pizza and service I have gotten in SF. Highly recommended. Slightly questionable area but once you get passed that the restaurant is unmatched.
This place is spectacular! My girlfriend and I went for an early Valentine's Day celebration and I have to say, this was one of the best dinners I've had in quite some time. We ordered the arugula salad and cauliflower salad to start, and the flavor combinations in the cauliflower salad were the perfect thing to start off with- very bright with lots of citrus! For our mains, we ordered two pizzas to share - Maranella (broccolini, burrata, and sausage) and Garbatella (red onions, tuna, hot chili, and buffalo mozzarella). They were both very special pizzas, unlike anything I've had before. The roman style is pretty unique! For dessert, we had panna cotta which was served with olive oil, so not too sweet but very tasty - and a mini pizza stuffed with a sweet pistachio inside.
The food was all perfect, and the service was very warm and comfortable. The manager even came by to make sure we were good, and took care of our drinks when he learned that I worked nearby because as he said - "we're family". I thought that was so nice!
Definitely go here if you want to experience a new type of pizza and feel transported to somewhere other than an alleyway off of 6th Ave in Mid-Market. It is a pretty strange location... but that didn't bother me at all!
I lived 4 years in Rome, actually in the neighborhood called Montesacro, and I have never heard of "pins as". That said, their food is delicious, even by Italian standards.
Catastrophic cost-performance ratio. The "Pizza Something" tastes boring, cannot be individualized, the daily recommendation cost 30$ and was less than a frozen pizza in size, bland in taste as I said. We were told something about black truffles in advance and there were only a few tasteless crumbs of truffles on the dough. Altogether a disappointing visit. And thus also the first and the last.
I cannot for the life of me understand how this gem isn't jam packed with a line around the block every minute of the day. The service is fantastic and warm, the food is perfection. We've been here repeatedly for dates, business lunches and group gatherings and have never left disappointed.
Decor: 4/5 -Small dining area, best for parties of 2 -Gets very warm from the oven
Service: 5/5 -from the time we ordered to finishing the pizza, less than 19 mins. Now that's efficient -yes to reservations
Food: 4/5 -Margherita pinsa ($15) dough was light and fluffy. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful however a bit on the pricy side. -The pinsa comes in an oval shape with a pizza cutter to satisfy both triangle and square pizza eaters.
Really impressive Roman-style pinsa. We had the sausage/brocollini pinsa and the margherita pinsa and both were delicious. The crust in particular was perfect - crisp exterior with a chewy inside.
Outstanding spot for Pizza. Fell in love with this place from the 1st taste. Fast and courteous service. The bill was well within reason for the quality.
Nice atmosphere but way too over priced for what it is. It might be because I'm European and thus pizza of this quality is a fraction of the price and on every corner, but the bill was quite a surprise. Thankfully the service was excellent.
Montesacro is a hidden gem. It is off a small street and not really in the best of areas, but once you walk in, you get transported to another world. It's a quaint restaurant with great food and wine. The pinseras are consistently good. Simple and delicious.
This is as close to traditional Roman meal as you will get in the States. Truly an EXCELLENT job on the pinsa and all the antipasti. There are plenty of tourist trap restaurants in Roma that are not close to as good of a representation of great local food as this place. Highly recommended if you are looking for a light meal before a concert or show. Can't say enough good things about this place even after living in Roma.
Wow, this place is special. I loved the atmosphere, antiques, and delicious pizza. The waiter made a solid wine recommendation and the cooks were super cute.
All the positive press is well deserved. This gem in a rough neighborhood will wow you with their Pinsas and small dish options. Owner Gianluca treats you like family and loved to tell the story of his special dough and hidden-but-recently-discovered bread ovens!
The Best Dinner in SF I've had in 2016! The bustling atmosphere, great service, lovely smells and gorgeous tastes at Montesacro makes one feel transported to bygone times at a homely rural Italian village:-).
I tried 2 tongs on the menu and they were excellent, great attention to raw materials and very attentive and polite staff. The bill is medium to high but correct if you want to eat well and Italian in San Francisco. The place could be taken care of a little more.
I asked for a recommendation about a good meat pinsa and was given the recommendation - Casal Bertone. So I ordered it and it had the least amount of meat on a pinsa. Not sure if that is their style or if there was a problem with the dish. But very disappointed. See for yourself.
So glad we sought out this hidden gem that friends recommended. We had delicious fresh food and the staff were charming and knowledgable. The salad with shaved asparagus and peas, and the kale salad with anchovy dressing were both wonderful. The pizza was great; we had the smoked salmon, and the one with lamb sausage. Who needs thin crust when you can have a light one, crisp a beautifully risen. The best food we've had in this foodie city.
Managed to get a table at 5:15 in time for our show, and we enjoyed one of the best, most authentic Italian dinners I ve had in the Bay Area. Food was incredible. Service was so friendly. And we had a great time. Highly recommended.
