Update July 2020 - They have reopened for rooftop dining above the neighboring Dottie's. Nice little cozy spot with heat lamps. Same friendly staff and great food. Location remains challenging as always and the city could do a better job supporting the businesses trying to stay in operations.
Original from early 2020 - Don't let the location down an alley off 6th fool you. This is the real deal Italian. Good food and great wine selection. The pinsas are lights and deliciously crisp. Good selection ranging from vegan to meat heavy. Nice wine list too. Don't pass this place up.
Food is amazing, staff is very nice and the new outdoor area is great. Proper European vibe!
I really liked their pinsa, it s light, tasty and crunchy at the same time.
You can cut the pizza by yourself!
The place is dope with a lot of italian vintage decors.
I love the food here so much. Their menu is huge and there are so many things I want to try. Fresh food great portions reasonable prices; SO GOOD. Highly recommended!!
Absolutely delicious everything! It was hard to chose so I went back and I've been going back for some time now. So many great options, and what a great wine list!
Hidden gem that should remain hidden so I get a seat again. Delicious food and fantastic service.
The pinsa is light and tasty, they have multiple vegetarian ones and even a vegan one, and local beer on tap. We were able to get a bar seat right away, but be careful if you have a sizeable party because it's quite small and thus seating is limited
The staff are very friendly and present without being hovering
Food was great! We had to wait 20 minutes after our reservation and our order was messed up a couple times, but they comped our dessert in apology. Overall, a good experience and the food was tasty enough that I'd definitely come back again.
Excellent pizza restaurant in SOMA. We were four, and we shared, it was great!
Excellent pizzeria in SOMA. We were four, we shared, it was great!
Fantastic little italian place! Amazing sandwiches for lunch
Great food, great service and special atmosphere: recommended
This place is amazing! Great service, fantastic food, and exceptional decor. I felt like I had stepped back in time. Looking forward to our next visit.
A bit pricey and small portions, but this is excellent pizza. The crust is delicious in and of itself and the sauce and toppings are also great. I can't comment personally on how authentically Roman it is in style, but I can tell you that every time I went, I had great food, great service and when my brother-in-law was with me who lived in Italy for a couple years some time back, he said it seemed right to him. (But he might have just been saying that because I'd chosen it and he wanted to be polite.)
This is not a pizza place for children, though, or at least, my niece and nephews thought the gourmet pizza was a little weird and wanted something else after.
Great authentic food specially the pizza bread was exceptionally Delicious. The desserts and esspreso at the end was a great way to conclude the meal. There are vegetarian options in almost all sections of the menu. Highly recommended and should try it out. The staff also was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Excellent Pizza and very fancy, authentic and quality toppings. I would like to see more vegetarian option, and I prefer a little chewier crust.
If you've never had this type of flatbread pizza, it's worth trying once. But for me it's not compelling enough to merit return trips.
There s a wonderful vibe that hits you the minute you walk in the door. It s as though a little pocket of Rome has been transported to the Mid-Market neighborhood, complete with a super-friendly Roman staff. And the food doesn t disappoint. Roman Pinsa is every bit as good as its more famous Neopolitan cousin the margherita was crunchy and chewy with bright tomato flavor and creamy fresh mozzarella. Don t miss out on this one.
Sure the neighborhood is rough but it's well worth the effort coming here. The pinsas are delicious, the wine list expensive but accessible. The seats and tables are small but reinforces the idea that a meal should be shared, closely, with friends and family. You'll come here for a meal and leave with a better understanding of your dinner mates.
Pizza for those who are not scared of flavour. Mybe pizza with the organic egg would have benefited from some tomato sauce but overall highly recommended!
Exceptional! Service was excellent and the food was simple, yet exquisite. Spent over two hours enjoying this unique spot before going to the Orpheum for a musical. We tried a variety of dishes and all were great. Make sure the spot is on your San Fran dining list.
Food was fun but the location is scary. Would only go back in the daytime.
There is no pizza here, but Pinsa. Other dough, rice flour. The store is in the middle of dirt and homeless people. But nobody seems to disturb the savoir-vivre here. A little too loud, a bit too expensive, a little too selfish. Rightly, the pizza has prevailed worldwide.
Unbelievably amazing pizza! Or "pinsa" as they call it. Unique compared to any other type of pizza I've ever had, but also better too. They also have cheese and meat boards and fancy wine lists, but I honestly just keep coming back for the pinsas. The place is always packed, so recommend reserving a table in advance. The service is pretty quick, and there is a single unisex bathroom.
Simply great! The restaurant is really nice, service amazing and food delicious.. I will be back soon :)
Amazing food and variety of products! They offer local and imported products of very good quality!
We had a really lovely lunch here right after outdoor dining went into effect. The food, wine, and service were all very good. We loved the different combinations for the flatbreads, something different than even your average Neapolitan pizza place (legit authentic for southern Italy). The rooftop deck at Dottie s, which they are using, is very cheerful, with the buildings rising around you, and the street noise below.
I've been here twice. The food was excellent both times. On my last visit the service was very poor, however. We waited 30 minutes for our table despite showing up on time for our reservation. The server was OK but overloaded and not very accommodating. They brought a very dirty fork to with the desert. OK, that can happen somehow, but then they had a huge attitude about replacing it (how dare we complain about a fork that was recently eaten from at another table). For the late table, the mediocre service and the dirty fork there was no acknowledgement other than an automatic 20% tip on the bill, plus SF surcharges.
Lovely little place, very good staff and delicious Roman- style pizza!
My new favorite spot for pizza...or should I say "pinsa". I ordered the chefs selection three cheese and meat charcuterie which was really good. But the pizza was like no other. The crust was amazingly light and crispy. My first visit there and I plan on going back for happy hour. Oh and on a side note. I met Iron Chef Marc Forgione who was eating with his dad.
Great place. They have very traditional recipes and service is excellent!
Great food and atmosphere. Accomodating about bringing in wine. A nice find in the tenderloin.
They have a decent pinsa here, which is basically a kind of pizza with an elliptical shape and a mix of multiple flours dough. Appetizer are good quality as it is the pinsa. It is a bit pricey due to small portion but again they focus on quality over quantity. I suggest this place if you are tired to try always the same pizza and your are looking for a gourmet pizza like dish.
I would fly here from Seattle to have their pizza!!!! Ask for: Montesacro Pinseria Romana SF Pizza and a beer... you really can't go wrong!
Delicious pizza with unique flavors and toppings. It's in a funky old building, and has a antique vibe, but honestly the BEST pizza I have had in a LONG time.
Best deep dish pizza, EVER!! Try the brass monkey it's not on the menu, but it's the little star with sausage added and it's quite delicious!
Fun Tip: This place is cash only, but the fee on their ATM is only 25 cents!! How awesome is that?
Very friendly staff and awesome traditional Italian food. The interiors looks old school, perfect for a having a glass of wine in a date.
Great pizza (pisa, in fact, dough made of rice and flour). Serves one or two, if you are not too hungry. Been there trice, always packed but not taking too long to be served. The pisas are very good and flavoured, so don't be afraid or going wrong because you can't. Even the most different combinations seem to be here well thought and experimented, providing a surprisingly good experience. The only downside is that the neighbourhood is ugly and smelly, with a lot of people living in the streets or selling stuff.
Hidden gem in a sketchy neighborhood. Wonderful staff, great food. Easy walk to the Orpheum and Civic Center
Pizza at this location - super tasty. Stopped in on a Tuesday. There was fast and courteous service. Bring your appetite because portions are filling. I can see why they have a lot of good reviews.
Really small sized pizza, just good for 1 person. Not much flavor or stuffing in it either, doesn't taste anything special too, definitely not worth $18 or so.
We stopped here for lunch while in town for a conference. The food was excellent. They have a nice variety of flavorful pizzas to choose from.
We ordered two pizzas for three people and it was a perfect lunch.
The decor and environment makes it a great place to sit down with a small or middle-sized group.
The service was excellent and our food arrived quickly.
We had to walk a little farther to get here than for other pizza places near our hotel, but it was absolutely worth the walk.
Bustling atmosphere, rustic decor. Tight space but very comfortable. Including the staff ate dressed and styled to match the decor. The food is in hearty portions and very delicious
A unique experience on pizza. Very laid back and cool place to dine. Another little gem of San Francisco.
Favorite restaurant in sf!!! Everyone is always kind and genuine, every time our waiter/waitress makes sure the wine choice is exactly right for us, makes sure everything is going well throughout the meal (not in an annoying way), and the FOOD!!!!! Also the dessert wine!!!!! Sooooo excellent! the DEFINITION of authentic! Superb! And fast. Can't wait to go back for visit 4!
misleading menu. cheap ingredients. deceiving experience
Honestly some of the best pizza and service I have gotten in SF. Highly recommended. Simply the best among among the rest!!
Fantastic service, along with great food and wine. Good spot to eat prior to nearby theaters.
If you like pizza, you'll definitely like pinsa, its very similar but more ancient and precious Roman cousin. Montesacro is apparently the first pinseria in the country, and it opened like a year and a half ago. I believe it. Pinsa is not exactly pizza but it is almost exactly pizza. It's enough like pizza that some bad pizza places (the ones that make thick, doughy crusts) are more or less making bad pinsa. It's also enough like pizza that no one would open a pinsa parlor outside of, say, NY/LA/SF, for fear of being mocked into bankruptcy.
Great food and atmosphere, I feel like I am in Italy =)!!
Good food, simple but cosy interior. Friendly employees. Unexpected in downtown area.
Tucked away in the alley, they are currently serving everyone on the rooftop (per covid guidelines). The service was above and beyond, the wine excellent, and the recommendations on cheeses and salami did not disappoint. Highly recommend for a dinner getaway.
Great food, authentic Italian cuisine. I truly recommend.
What an awesome place. It deserves all of the 5 stars after so much supposedly awesome but in reality terrible food I had in the past days.
A truly genuine and original Italian meal with a twist. Not your typical boring Italian food you find outside of Italy.
I strongly recommend this place!!!
Liked the food and the service was good but the location is dicey and the chairs just SO uncomfortable.
Pinsas are thin Roman pizzas but much lighter. Would highly recommend the meat one with sausage and tomato sauce. They also have a good wine selection with some lesser known grapes and wines.
Had a really great dinner here last week and highly recommend it -- delicious food, nice service, and well priced. We had a green salad, the chef's choice for meats and cheeses, and the pinsa with sausage. Yum. I could do it all over again tonight!
Only place to get authentic (& delicious) Pinsa in the city
A pizza but not quite a pizza. Got the Maranella- mozzarella, broccolini and burrata and spicy pork sausage as well as the Villa gordiani- mozzarella, crispy parsley, mushroom and chili. Really like the Maranella. I recommend making a reservations before coming down to this place. Didn't make any but the lovely staff there got us a table with a half an hour wait honestly not too long. Service was good and the food came out pretty quickly as well!
Very nice vine!! You should try Calasetta from Sardegna.
SO GOOD. We devoured it all! Amazing. Must stop by here while you re in the area! Beautiful little place tucked away in the alley. You would miss it if you walked by, but you don t want to miss it!
The Best Dinner in SF in 2016!
The bustling atmosphere, great service, lovely smells and gorgeous tastes at Montesacro makes one feel transported to bygone times at a homely rural Italian village:-).
Scary location. The most amazing food that you will eat Roman-style pinsa in the city. You really must visit to understand the charm and Italianess of this incredible locals only restaurant.
Great (and unique) Italian-style pizza with friendly service.
Whole in the wall, but fantastic authentic Italian food.
Hole in the wall, really good Italian fare. Caesar the margarita pizza and kale Caesar salad were amazing. We set up to the bar and had an excellent late night dinner. Very intimate setting with great service
I come to this location daily. We loved their delicious food while dancing and having a chit-chat. We're here every Friday and Sunday with my parents. The wide range of food and drinks mixed with a touch of class made the dining experience absolutely outstanding. Restaurant of five stars!
Beautiful reality. Exquisite Pinsa. After so many American flavors finally something that ricotdi Italy
Good pizza, service and Italian environment. The pizza border was a bit burned though, bus still delicious.
Traditional Italian pizza.
I recommend make reservation.
I just love this place , I truly hope the day never comes when Claudia will sell this little gem.. Home made Italian food fresh and yummy and their bread is always hot and fresh from the oven I wish I lived closer I wold be here more.
Eclectic antique tools scattered about, vintage classic European park and school chairs, a good selection of wine & beer, with fresh ingredients salads and creative 'pinsa' flavor combinations. Seating capacity max is 49, so even in a smallish SF restaurant, conversation is possible without raising your voice or staining to hear.
Friendly knowlagble staff with great pizza and appetizers but a bit pricy.
The pinsa was fabulous - lovely and crispy, and showcased the simple yet flavorful toppings. The standout for us was the casal bertoni (with pecorino, ham and honey).
Do yourself a favor and EAT HERE ASAP. This is my favorite pizza place in the city, beating out Tony's, Ragazza, Little Star, and all the rest. The crispy, Roman-style crust is where the magic is--but the goodness doesn't stop there. The porchetta is delicious (though their latest thinly sliced version isn't as good as the original thick cuts), and the focaccia der muratore, which is nothing more than mortadella stuffed in a plain pinsa, brings me more joy than the most complex concoctions of Michelin star chefs. For dessert, get their incredible pinsa with pistachio Nutella. We thought we were full after dinner, but when this gem of a dessert came along, everyone was shoveling it in as if we hadn't just stuffed ourselves silly. Coupled with a fantastic wine selection and good service, this is a place that's worth the foray into mid-Market madness.
You ll think in pizza but what they serve is actually a pinsa! A typical dish from Rome made with a blend of rice, soy and wheat flour.
It s really delicious, but kind of hard to cut if you eat it with a knife. The size is perfect for one person, so if you go with someone or in a group, you can ask for many and then divide so you can try different options. I totally recommend the margherita one.
The service is great and fast. The place can get really busy so if you don t want to wait, you should make a reservation!
Italian pizza with rice flour and others. Very rich and the place with the whole wave.
We were touched by an Italian boy who spoke Spanish.
Eye to night. It is a neighborhood very populated by homeless. Although I had no problems, it is scary because you are walking and you have to avoid them because they did not register us. I recommend leaving the place in Uber.
