I went to the Mohonk Mountain House with my family for my 40th birthday. At $1200 a night my expectations were real high. Mohonk unfortunately didn't live up to those expectations. The food was sub par at best. Being a foodie and CIA Alumni I was really looking forward to the cuisine. My birthday dinner was a complete disappointment. My Wife's fish dish was nearly inedible, my lamb was cold and undercooked. The carrots served with my lamb were uncooked and the mashed potatoes were greasy, uninspired and flat. My daughter's pasta with marinara sauce tasted like straight canned tomato product lacking seasoning and garlic, onion, and basil. The only one who had a good dish was my son who got the hand cut steak which wound up being a filet mignon with a delicious demi glace cooked to perfection. The other meals were comparable in quality. The grounds although are beautiful. Gorgeous hiking paths and activities throughout the premises. At the price point of Mohonk I would expect a little more attention by the staff to recognize the momentous birthday occasion being spent with them at their resort. I would tell future prospective visitors to use the grounds for hiking absolutely, but stay at a near by hotel for a fraction of the price, and eat out in downtown New Paltz.
