A 12-month-old baby has not had anything to eat for more than 5 hours and should continue to starve indefinitely because it must be sober for the upcoming exam. Are you crazy?
We were there with our 12 months old daughter for cochlear implant pre-examination. There were 3 days planned.
Day 1:
Arrive at 9:30 am, fill out forms, conduct reconnaissance talks about the upcoming examinations (including CT, MRI, BERA) with the physicians. During the reconnaissance talk about the general anesthetic, the doctor notices that our daughter should be the third one on Thursday. As she is not allowed to eat 4 hours before the anesthesia, babies are immediately the first to stop at 8 o'clock. The doctor calls her colleague, but nothing changes. We should be on it at 10 o'clock on Thursday. After the last reconnaissance talk, we are at the ward (pediatric clinic) from 4 pm and move into our sickroom. There then the first shock: From the tap on the baby bath comes no water. From the tap in the bathroom comes water, but it is just hand-warm after several minutes. Whether you have ever heard of Legionella at the MHH? Anyway, it's only 3 days, then it will not be showered for so long. At 20 o'clock much the staff then that with our daughter (12 months old, was from the day and ready and wanted to sleep) still blood must be taken. For this we would have to please in the Kindernotaufnahme. Why are not doctors at the children's hospital able to take blood? Anyway, so we sit a short time later with our healthy daughter in the waiting area of Kindernotaufnahme between other children, which obviously only cough + runny nose, are waiting for the blood sample and hope that our daughter is not infected.
Day 2:
We woke our daughter at 1:30 am and at 5:20 am to feed. From 6 o'clock she got nothing more, so she can at 10 o'clock scheduled into general anesthesia. Our daughter wants to eat something every 3 hours during the day, so 4 hours will not be easy, neither for our daughter, nor for us. As there was still no one around 10 o'clock to pick us up for anesthesia, we asked what was going on. Answer: We are number 3 on the list and at the moment you are still busy with number one. Furthermore, no anesthetists are available for anesthesia. We should get ready, but it could take a few more hours. So we should let a 12-month-old child, who wants to eat every 3 hours, starve indefinitely ?! After much crying and crying, we finally gave our daughter something to eat at 11:15 am - more than 5 hours after she was fed the last time.
Dear MHH doctors: If you did not skip children and the baby seminar at the university, then you should be told that you can not explain to a 12-month-old baby why it may not eat for an indefinite period of time. Such a baby is hungry every 3 hours and then starts to cry and scream. Who in this case gives the instruction to let such a baby starve indefinitely, has either no heart or no mind.
At noon, our daughter was called to anesthesia. By then she would have had to starve for 6 hours (= 2 full meals). We then told the doctors that they could not put our daughter in anesthesia until 15:30, because then 4 hours were over again. Answer: "We do not do anything in the afternoon". So we asked her when it would come the next day. Answer: "Not at all, let's make a new appointment, the next free dates are in 5 months, we can not do anything for them, drive home."
In the ENT department of the MHH, posters are printed on which it is written that MHH is a member of an excellence cluster through the "Hearing4All" program. Dealing with our daughter was everything, but not excellent.
