Definitely not a luxury hotel. The rooms are small. The bed is low. You have to pay $5 for Fiji water and $3 for a small can of regular Pringles. They are marks with crayon on the wall and the walls are thin. The wifi isn't even free. $10 per day to use wifi that isn't even that fast smh. This place is mess. The best things is the staff, decor and the free mint lemon water.

Great experience! I love these smaller, boutique-ish hotels in New York. You can usually find a great hotel, or a great staff, but it takes both for a great experience. That would be the Marcel .
The check-in experience was so great! The front desk staff were friendly and the room was clean and well appointed. The view out of the room was good and it stayed cool during our whole stay.
Great hotel in a great location, very clean and modern. Plus hotel staff is super helpful and friendly. All hotel staff, but especially Milta and Claribel at the front desk were friendly and made our stay perfect.
We have just arrived for what we had hoped would be a great 4 night stay but words cannot express my disappointment. From having to pay for wifi (a bugbear of mine) to our tiny 10ftx10ft room with no nice touches - robes, extra pillows, even glasses and coffee/tea making facilities - this hotel falls far far short of what I would expect for its price and star rating.
I ve stayed at many hotels but this one is unique. Isabel and Miltal went out of their way to make sure my family and I were comfortable with our new born. I had requested a crib but my room was too small for the crib and stroller so before I even reached to the hotel, they accommodated me to another room.
Hotel is up to date, modern and contemporary looking. I am here for another 2 days and really satisfied I selected this hotel for our stay in nyc.
Bad experience, I recommend finding another accommodation in NY. They handled national health security issues badly. You rarely find poor customer service like them.
Because this is in Manhattan, I guess you will enjoy the accommodation conditions that correspond to the price, most of the time. It s great to live here. When I complained to them that there was no place to put the suitcase on the floor, they brought me a small dressing table. The room was not big, it looked even smaller, but it helped me a lot.
Easy to access areas like Times Square and 5th Avenue. Easy to get free wifi in the lobby and Level 10 lounge. Nabil was very helpful, stored our bags on arrival and after we checked out and organised a private transfer to the airport at a great price for us.
Great location, convenient to NYC landmarks and public transit. Great staff, they called us daily to make sure our stay was going well and to see if we needed anything. We will definitely be staying there next time we visit!
Rooms are tiny, my tub wasn't level making it hard to shower. A lot of noise from adjoining rooms. Considering the cost of the room, I expected more amenities, such as an in room coffee pot. Instead you have a 3 hour window in which you can go to the 10th floor and get coffee. Will bot choose this hotel on my next business trip.wi fi was decent though.
Got there at 9pm when we got there put us in a room size of a cupboard .receptionist says you will claim a change could not believe the size of the room no wardrobe just a utensil hole and some coat hangers.don't know how many times I banged my toe.I had to still lie on 3/4 size bed until wife got ready because there was no room for 2 of us to walk in room211 together.they moved us to a slightly larger room next again day but the windows were not properly sealed definately not a 4 star hotel
For the last 4+ years I've been staying at The Marcel at Gramercy. I stay here every 6-8 weeks when I travel to NYC for pleasure. In my opinion this exceptionally wonderful boutique hotel is in the perfect location, safe and quiet neighborhood and walking distance from the major subway lines, in the heart of Gramercy and walking distance to Flatiron and Chelsea neighborhoods. The rooms are very spacious, comfortable and nice. Most important are the staff members at this hotel. Words can't describe how grateful I am for them and how accommodating they are to me. It is because of this team is why I keep coming back to this hotel. I consider the team my family. Mohamed, Abdellah, Nabil, Luis , Sarah, Caroline, Danielle, Felicia, Isabel and Milta thank you for being my home and making me feel so special when I stay.
Veeeery nice hotel! Staff is great and helpful! Room was clean, location is wonderful! And the view from living room on 10th floor is amazing! And as a bonus there is very nice Indian place to have dinner 1 min walk from hotel!
Nice hotel in a convenient area of Manhattan. Rooms are comfortable and staff are extremely accomodating. Great view of the Empire State Building from the terrace
Hotel was in a great location. They do need parking or have something set up through the parking garages to get a discounted rate. Also they mentioned something about a roof top bar. Went to the roof top no bar, no ppl, nothing.
"In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity". You guessed it! Our week long family vacation here at The Marcel at Gramercy started rough and I can bore you with the details of what went wrong when we stayed here at the end of July, 2019 in NYC in the middle of the now infamous heatwave, but I won't because you must have encountered such bad experiences and I want to get to the important facts quickly. The staff here under the management of Isabel Chiang don't believe that customer service is that important, and I say that as a huge compliment! They believe in and work towards something more important and that's customer loyalty. You see, in this age of the experience economy customer service is a given, it's the minimum that you should expect and get but what sets great businesses apart is their mission to create customer loyalty by doing things exactly right not just somehow right because we, the customers, are the most important asset of any business. Isabel and her team understood that and that's why our room was not only changed twice to ensure maximum satisfaction but was upgraded to accommodate our needs after the difficulties and bad experiences we had. And I must mention here the staff; a group of committed individuals who served us with creativity, compassion and competence: I would like to start with the professionalism of Nabil the conseirge/doorman, the outstanding service of Felicia and Lewis at the front office/guests services, the wonderful care of Carmen and Jenny at housekeeping, the dedication and service of Hassan at maintenance and engineering, the great care of Milta Pichardo the front office manager and of course, the first class VIP treatment we received from the moment we arrived until the time we left by the awe-inspiring Isabel Chiang the director of rooms and the leader of this awesome team. I am sure I have missed few, but although I can't name them trust me when I say that every staff member we encountered whether in the elevator or at the terrificly vibrant rooftop with it's stunning views or at the convenient business centre with all it's amneties, everyone was an ambassador to this remarkable brand of hospitality called, The Marcel at Gramercy. We truly enjoyed the wonderful free snack bar in their relaxed and fashionable lobby and we certainly took advantage of the discount hotel guests get at local fine eateries. But most of all, it was the room with all the comforts of home and superb view that we enjoyed the most. This refreshingly personal approach designed to accommodate guests and service their stay is one that have delighted every member of our family, deeply satisfied us to our utmost enjoyment after the initial difficulties we faced the first few hours we checked in. Isabel, our situation was a Moment of Truth for you, your hotel and staff and your brand. So, with a bravura performance by you and your team coupled with your outstanding commitment to first-rate experience for us and I believe your other guests as well, you have set yourself apart and have gained a new and loyal customer. Kudos to you and your fabulous team, we can't wait to see you again, hopefully sometime in December. I apologise for the long review, but if I had more time I would have written a shorter review! With sincere regards, admiration and appreciation, The Bessiso and Caballero Family
Lobby is tiny, elevators are SUPER slow, no breakfast, the staff refused to turn music on the roof even though there are speakers. The short lady at front desk was rude and acted like she couldn't care less. Don't stay here!
It was a Meh hotel stay..gives the image and impression of some high-end, high priced hotel in NYC but it's a pretty below average hotel slapped with paint. Rooms are fine for the area. The super creeky and very uneven floors were covered up by cheaply installed carpet. No extra perks offered except for free water in the lobby and "snacks"(which I had yet to see). Windows to the street offered 0 privacy and the beds were not very comfy and excessively tucked in. Check-in process was a nightmare. I paid and purchased 2 rooms online for my staff but despite my CC already having a hold payment I was asked to pay again in person and as I had my company card was first told to complete an authorization form, then told to have my company sign the form, then told I need a picture of the card, then told I need my CEOs photo ID. I dealt with 4 staff members..one female manager and 3 front desk and they each have me a different story every time for the required forms . The doorman was super nice always said good morning, and opened the door and the internet worked well. Won't be staying here again on my quarterly visits withy team.
Talk to Kathy at the front desk she will hook you up with the best deals. They always get me the best prices. The bellman ( I believe his name is Danny) was really accommodating. He helped with all our luggage and he was really sweet to my wife and two daughters. Rooms were really clean. NO complaints, honestly.
Lovely hotel. Staff really friendly. Upgraded our room and when they could out it was my birthday we had a complimentary bottle of fizz and a card! Thank you Marcel for a lovely stay.
This hotel exceeded my expectations. Don't get me wrong the rooms are tiny, but they are clean and efficient we had a great view of the city. The room size is more than made up for by the helpful and readily available staff. Any time we needed towels or blankets, they were delivered to the room almost immediately after hanging up the phone with the front desk. The tenth floor lounge has free wifi and computers available for use and printing, along with awesome views of the Empire State Building. My only complaint would be that the walls are extremely thin and the rooms are on top of each other, we had trouble sleeping some nights do to overly noisy neighbors. Over all a great hotel and I'd definitely stay here again!
very small room, you can't stay with your suitcases. Tiny and uncomfortable bathroom, the location is close enough to the main attractions but a bit of a walk (3 blocks) from the first subway stop. despite being well cared for as furniture flaw also with regard to the location directly on the street and therefore noisy rooms !!
Great location, Empire State Building & Times Square all within walking distance. Lots of food options and great dive bars all close to Marcel! Would stay here again.
It was an ok hotel, the service and location are good but the rooms are bad. The room was hot and the beds were uncomfortable. Overall the hotel is an good place for a few days.
Small, clean room. Decent bathroom/shower. Despite the cool temps outside the room was too warm and the heater/aircon unit kept switching back to default super high heat. I needed the ear plugs because the unit was so loud not because of the outdoor noises. There is a step to enter the hotel, no ramp. Annoying if you have a heavy case as there is no doorman to help (85% of the time). Otherwise hotel was decent. Location is great. Price for size seems to be NY standard. Outrageous to spend $300 for such a tiny room but hey I heart NY and was there on business. Decent wifi and nice rooftop facility. Free breakfast ? I had no idea. I only saw an old coffee machine, water/tea and what seemed to be a waffle maker but there's plenty of eats in the area. Staff is friendly. One of the cleaning ladies helped me with my suitcase to get to the elevator.
Leaving the Marcel tomorrow but I wish I could stay longr. The hotel is in an ideal location for restaurants shops parks and bus/rail servicesAll staff helpful and pleasant room spotless. I asked if it was possible to have a kettle in my room and a view got both I was delighted. This is my first visit to New York with my teenager and my parents and will stay here again.
A good location if you want to be close to Union Square. Staff pleasant and room comfortable, albeit a bit small and tired in terms of decor. WiFi just does not work in rooms.
Hotel is nice for the price. Rooms are small but it's NYC so... to be expected. Staff is helpful, and it's clean. Can't ask for much more than that *cough, no gym, cough*
Wonderful hotel close to all attractions. The room is well appointed & the staff are more than helpful. Our thanks to Claribel, Mira & Muhamed for making our stay in NYC a very pleasurable experience
I've stayed here several times and all of the rooms are chic, but some are a little on the small side. The air conditioning can be a little noisy, but I had no trouble sleeping.
Room is so small, no wifi, no chair to sit in, the carpet had a dust ring around the edge where the molding is like no one ever vacuumed. Wall paper is coming off, before check in I had choices of 1 or 2 beds, upper or lower floor, bigger or smaller room, or a nice view. I chose nice view out of all the choices. I got a 3rd floor rm overlooking a parking garage with a queen size bed so low you Can trip over it. The price was reasonable in a decent location. If you Are out all day and night and just looking for a bed to crash in, it will do. Btw they use a regular antenna for tv reception.
Not sure if I just caught this at the right time or what but we got in here for 160 bucks. So cheap for NYC and the hotel was great. Rooms weren't huge but big enough and comfy bed. Their Tv's need to be upgraded to a bigger size but that's nit picking. Well worth the money and close to time square.
Basic hotel. AC sounded like a 18 wheeler coming through the room. Price decent for the area though. The staff was pretty nice which can be rare in Manhattan. You can definitely hear everything that is going on in the rooms that are next to you which kinda sucks if you have rude people there. For the price I will probably stay here again plus they are always having flash sales on their website. So with that don t expect too much and check the website for the sales and you will have a decent time here. Plus, there are a bunch of places to eat and drink around here.
I did not stay here myself, but had two friend stay. The lobby is very nice and it is in a semi-quiet neighborhood (it is Manhattan after all). The guests had no bad things up say.
We just stayed here for my bachelorette weekend. From booking through checkout we received the highest level of service! They were accommodating with requests for the type of room we needed, prompt to supply extra towels and other necessities and even sent up a bottle of prosecco on the house when they heard it was a special occasion. The way the rooms are set up is a bit confusing (the hallways felt like a maze) but it meant that we couldn t really hear foot traffic in the hallways since our little section only had two other rooms. The room was a bit small but that s to be expected in NYC. There is a lovely terrace and lounge on the 10th floor where we spent quite a bit of time relaxing in the sun. Our air conditioner did break in the middle of the second night and they sent someone to fix it promptly. It could not be fixed and the room got uncomfortably hot (we couldn t get the window open), but staff was apologetic and comped some of our stay as compensation. The staff is courteous, warm and professional- we could tell they truly cared about the quality of our stay. Finally the location and price could not be beat! Definitely would stay here again!
This is a tourist hotel, plain and simple, and they have shoehorned rooms into some very oddly shaped spaces in the building. It is pretty quiet, and the location is generally pretty convenient to the 30's and the east side. I can't say I loved this place, but it does have a penthouse club area, and a stylish lobby. Would I go back? No.
Excellent service, great for access to main subway line. Rooms fine, nice roof terrace/lounge. Check in area could be updated. Thanks Mohammed for your baggage help.!
Expect to share your room with a mouse, then be charged for it. Do not stay at The Marcel at Gramercy unless you want to pay $200/night for the following to happen to you:
1. find a mouse in your room 2. find front desk staff reluctant to dispose of the mouse you caught in your room so that you have to dispose of it yourself 3. ask for two pre-dawn wake up calls so that you can catch your early morning flight, but receive neither these calls nor a knock on your room's door so that you end up missing your flight 4. be checked out by a front desk person who does not ask how your stay was or make eye contact with you but instead rudely dismisses you as soon as she sees that your stay was already paid for 5. be charged $47 on your credit card after you've checked out (for for an umbrella you never borrowed from the front desk and for the "complimentary" beer the front desk gave you as an apology for the mouse) 6. be promised a call back from a manager by a certain time to address your complaint about the incorrect charges, then not receive that call until half an hour after the promised time, only to discover that she is the weekend manager and has no authority to address all of your complaints 7. schedule a specific time to speak to a higher-up manager, then discover that this manager, too, fails to call you back at the promised time because he did not receive your clear note that you live in a different time zone 8. have that second manager transfer you to the general manager, who then tells you that "Being in New York City, it does happen. Mice do end up in hotels. I don't know what to tell you," that "I'm not calling you a liar, but it is possible that you never placed the wake up calls," and that he's ending the call because "you're very combative"
The above list hopefully reflects an unusual stay at The Marcel at Gramercy. The following list is what you can expect from a typical stay:
CON 1. an upgraded superior room with a short full-sized bed so that you cannot sleep comfortably if you are over 5' 6" 2. wifi is $10/day, which we did not purchase because, according to many other reviewers, it provides a very weak connection 3. an old iHome clock radio whose radio function plays mostly static and whose buttons are so worn that it is impossible to set an alarm or turn the static noise off without pressing on the buttons for more than 3 minutes 4. $7 bottled water 5. a loud air-conditioner that kicks on automatically and needs to be shut off every time you enter the room 6. loud elevator and outside noises 7. a sink that does not drain properly 8. terrible self-service coffee and cheap tea bags in the guest lounge, which are only available until 10:00 a.m. (there is no hot water boiler, instant coffee, or tea bags in the room) 9. no toothbrush, toothpaste, q-tips, cotton pads, disposable razor, shaving cream, and other toiletries that are commonly provided in hotels of comparable pricing (there is only shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, bar soap, and lotion) 10. very weak overhead light (about as dim as a candle) such that it is difficult to see in the room at night even with all of the lights and the TV on
PRO 1. some staff members the cleaning staff, door man, and the late-night front desk person who checked us in are very friendly 2. in order to reduce the hotel's own costs, your bedding and towels will not be changed unless you remember to place a card on your pillow and throw your towels on the on the floor so you get to feel green, if that makes you happy 3. if you spend hours and hours playing phone tag to address incorrect charges, eventually they'll say that they'll correct them
I would never stay there ever again, nor should anybody who expects acceptable service.
We had a pretty good time at the Marcel at Gramercy. The first room we had was very small, especially the bed that is not adapted for 2 persons, and the A/C didn't work. I am okay with small rooms but the bed was way to small I went to the lobby to inform them that I wasn't sleeping well as I am pregnant and they were nice to change the room. It has been very appreciated, they really took care of us ! The other room was much better and the bed bigger. I am very grateful for this :)
I just find a little bit sad that we had this room at first ; not because of my pregnancy because they didn't know, but because the bed is really to small for 2 people and I think it is not a good idea to offer this for 2 people. No one could have sleep well in this situation...
Otherwise, the people were so nice, especially the lady manager (I am sorry I lost your card but you were great!), Mohamed and Nabil too. The rooftop offers a beautiful view on the Empire state building. The rooms are comfortable and clean.
The plus : the team ! the king size bed, the view of the rooftop, the emplacement (very close to the flatiron building and the empire state building) The minus : the first bed, way too small...
I had terrible experience with this hotel on 5/24/2019. When I was searching for hotels to spend a night with my girlfriend, this hotel popped up as $85.00 a night, which was good for me. Then, when I was about to finalize my booking, price altered to 127.00 with 42$ fee added up. I just kind of led it go because we were tired. We stayed a night there and when we were checking out next day, the receptionist said they have charged another 75.00 as a deposit and they will put it back within an hour. I was so angry because I didn't have enough money to cover that. As a result, my bank charged me $35.00 overdraft fee. Now its already 3 days and they haven't returned my deposit yet. My bank is in negative balance. They destroyed my whole weekend mood. I do not recommend to anyone.
