There is always something going on, be that an open-air concert or some other event. It is neatly located next to Melbourne's central station and the Yarra river. There are plenty of seats and it is somewhat crowded at times due to its great location.

Can walk

Can walk
But in fact, nothing.
The opposite church and the station next to it are pretty~

But the history of this side is very meaningful.
Is to make every human being able to get along with each other.
I heard that the Chinese had resisted here before.

I'm a big fan of this place! Such an amazing part of Melbourne, filled with performing acts, art decorations, big screen, stage performances, cinemas, bars and restaurant.

I always go here knowing there will be something on that I could do!

Great meeting place to catch up with freinds. Just a stones tbrow from Flinders Street Station. Has a number of stores to grab a drink. Has able open areas to sit back for a chat. During the warmer months the place becomes a hive of activity. Well worth to go.

Open air stage, art activities along the Yarra river, within a few minutes of walk from Flinders station and across from St. Paul's cathedral. The center offers lots of cultural activities, food joints and easy approach to the Yarra river walk in the heart of Melbourne. one can spend lot of good quality time there. it is also within easy walking distance from the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Rod Laver Arena, Southbank and Eureka Skydeck this is a must visit and spend time area in Melbourne!

Only giving it this rating due to the cold, wet weather they hadn't prepared for, for an out-door's double feature movie night. And their lack of seating, knowing they were going to continue rain or shine; didn't help the matter.

Early morning exploration: Federation Square. Back...

Early morning exploration: Federation Square. Back in the late 1990s, the site of Federation Square was an abandoned building that was later demolished. In place was a unique designed public space that offers an amazing vista into the river and gardens on the opposite bank, and the view of beautiful Victorian heritage on the street side. This has been the place for many public events and hailed as Melbourne s hangout spot. The Melbourne Visitor Centre is located here.

As a Resident who has lived in Melbourne for over seven years, I honestly find Federation Square Dull and Boring. The atmosphere isn't right as well as the environment as it's the central area where there is a train station. I really wish that we would have a Piccadilly Circus vibe such as adding LED signs to make the city more alive.

My niece and I always have a great time here. The venue offers so many possibilities to spend a few hours and forget about the daily grind. Art lovers can always find something new and creative, with all the exhibitions and live music constantly going on. There' a wide choice of places to eat and drink and you can lose track of time browsing the shops. Whether going to a particular event or simply popping by, it's never boring for people of all ages and interests.

Although I'm currently living in London, I've lived in Melbourne all my life. At first I hated the square but i've come to love it due to it's mish-mash and controversial design. As an engineer i work on structural projects and can only imagine how difficult something like federation sqaure would be to design and construct... full props to those involved! There's plenty of bars and resteraunts, although some are a little pricey, and it's a great meeting point. Watching the Rugby World Cup there in 03 was amazing... just a dissappointing result. Other sporting events like the soccer/football world cup have been held there and it is the perfect spot for such events! That's 5/5 from me. If you don't like it now, look at melbournes skyline and tell me what else would fit in with the mix of architecture we have...

I do not see the attraction to this particular historic place. The free wifi is slow and limited. A far better internet poaching option is the convention centre or the free vic network around the crown casino a mear 200 meters away. Beers are expensive and the venues as bland as an un cooked patoto chip that I payed top tourist prices for.
If your looking for a historic experience you would be better off going to the pub across the road from flinders st station.
Still top dollar, but atleast its still got old bricks.

A central focal and meeting point for all visitors...

A central focal and meeting point for all visitors and Melbournians alike. With an excellent visitor information centre on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Street, which is free to visit and use, you're never to miss an significant event in Melbourne again. The Federation Square houses many coffee shops including "Time Out", Taxi Bar, ACMI cafe & bar, and Beer Deluxe Fed Square.

The area is wide and broad providing plenty of City skyline views when you meander around its cobbled paved walkways. The Square is just across Swanston Street from Flinder Street Station and directly adjacent from St.Pauls on the corner of Finders Street.

Australian Centre For Moving Image (ACMI) is housed in the centre of Fed Square with access from either Flinders Street or the centre court yard. The Yarra is just on the square's south side and river cruises are available at cost.

Many corporate functions are held in the Squares corporate function rooms so there is plenty of exploring to do at Federation Square which opened in 2002 and is dedicated to "Be recognised internationally as an inspirational public square". Some of Melbournians feel the architecture is bizarre others believe it is creative and forward thinking. Whatever the case you find it distinctive.

Federation Square is a venue for arts, culture and...

Federation Square is a venue for arts, culture and public events on the edge of the Melbourne central business district. It covers an area of 3.2 ha (7.9 acres) at the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets built above busy railway lines and across the road from Flinders Street station. It incorporates major cultural institutions such as the Ian Potter Centre and ACMI and Koorie Heritage Trust as well as cafes and bars in a series of buildings centred around a large paved square, and a glass walled atrium. The corner is occupied by a glass walled pavilion that provides access to the underground Melbourne Visitor Centre. The architecture of the square is in the deconstructivist style, with both plan and elevations designed around slightly angular, 'cranked' geometries, rather than tradition orthogonal grids. The built forms are mainly slightly bent north-south volumes, separated by glazed gaps, a reference to traditional Melbourne laneways, with vertical 'shards', attached or freestanding, containing discrete functions like the Visitor's Centre, or lifts and stairs.

The larger built volumes are relatively simple reinforced concrete buildings with glass walls, but with a second outer skin of cladding carried on heavy steel framing, folded and stepped slightly to create angular undulating surfaces. The cladding is composed of 6 different materials, zinc, perforated zinc, glass, frosted glass, sandstone and no cladding, in a camouflage-like pattern, and created using pinwheel tiling. The 'crossbar' is an east-west built from that runs through the long gallery building, and is clad in perforated black steel panels.
