The heart of Melbourne, Federation Square is a well designed large public space right on the Yarra River
Great stores and nice area to be. Food selection was really nice.
A must visit place where all Melbourne activities and events are running
Nice public space, lots of dining and a few arts options. Parking garage below. Free wifi is cool.
It's strange how a space can feel weird or off-putting until time passes and it grows on you. You know, oddly shaped rectangular and messy faux modern angles and confusion... Fed square was like that for me. Now i love sitting on the steps and looking across at people meeting other people or just enjoying some time. It used to be that folks would meet-up under the clocks at Flinders st, now across the road it's Fed Square. Also, they have ACMI which is great for film heads, and the Ian Potter Centre for the aussie art section the national gallery (free entry).
Great architecture and space. Nice and chilled place to hang with friends, and to watch sport on the large screen. Highly suggest watching the tennis here during the Australian Open and you haven't got tickets.
Its alright for tourists I guess. Easy access in the free tram zone and also next to the train station. Watch out for seagulls trying to steal your food!
iconic meeting place at the most liveable city in the world
There are so many Arts exhibitions and things to see. It's an architecturally beautiful around this area with so much to see.
It's definitely designed to attract tourists which it seems to do a good job of.
Plenty of places to eat and drink around and easy to access via public transport.
Did not stay long to explore but it sre is a place for the locals and tourists to hang out
I'm drawn to Federation Square like a bee to flowers every time I'm in Melbourne. It's like an attraction precinct in itself - a hub for events, tourism, food and wine, and home to two major attractions, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and NGV Australia: Ian Potter Centre.
It's the centre of FREE for visitors. There are lots of free things to do daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. You have free fitness classes, craft workshops, vintage car exhibitions, designer markets, cultural festivals, concerts, food fairs, open-air movies, dance parties, and the list goes on.
It also a popular meeting place and gathering spot for locals. No one will lose their way trying to find this place.
Nothing is more wonderful than when I saw The Queen here...
The Royal Guard were nice enough to introduce themselves to me, so I laughed...
Truly wonderful...
Federation Square is a venue for arts, culture and public events on the edge of the CBD of Melbourne. It built above busy railway lines and across the road from Flinders Street station. It incorporates major cultural institutions such as the Ian Potter Centre and ACMI and Koorie Heritage Trust as well as cafes and bars in a series of buildings centred around a large paved square, and a glass walled atrium. The corner is occupied by a glass walled pavilion that provides access to the underground Melbourne Visitor Centre.
A great place to spend an afternoon with friends and family.
I enjoyed my trip to Melbourne being in Federation Square. The place is very clean and well managed. Historic Flinders Station opposite of the square is another key point as I got easy access to transportation.
There was a Christmas event going on in the square and I really enjoyed that
A great public space, have not been here since my holiday in 2005 for the AFL Grand Final..
What might have started off as a controversial project by the government has turned into Melbourne's best meeting place. There are some great cafes and bars in Fed Square too.
Whether you line the architecture or not, you cannot go to Melbourne and miss it.
Many free and interesting things to do around!
I think it's a cardinal sin to visit Melbourne and NOT see Fed Square. There's nothing SUPER amazing about it, but it's a nice spot to hang out and there's free WiFi.
Very accessible. Worth a visit to see the architecture, the people and the nice atmosphere.
Federation Square is one of my favourite places in Melbourne. I love the numerous festivals and events organised there. The Lights in Winter Festival was superbly managed and the light installations were brilliant, especially the Helix Tree.
Best people watching ever, with many many events for everyone, always so safe and friendly.
When you consider what once was on this site Fed Sq is one of the most amazing transformations of any block in Melbourne.
Heart of the Melbourne CBD. Large enough to have a lot of space for people. There's always something happening. One can't just miss this place.
Its just an awesome place to hang out or pass through.
Lots of things to check out and nice open space with plenty of seating.
Very unique architecture..very unusual and their shape is very abstract..
Fed Square is one of the greatest places in Melbourne due to it's enormous size of flat land just to sit down and eat lunch the the middle of the great city of Melbourne
A public square dominated by a giant television says a lot about Australia. Keep the masses pacified. Nonetheless it still has its charms and can accomodate a protest if someone turns the volume down on the TV.
Awesome place to visit go to when wandering around.
It is a place that is suitable for one person. The environment is clean. I like to go for a walk or sit and think about dinner after 6 or 7 in the evening.
The ugliest eyesores I've ever had the misfortune of seeing. Everything about this abomination speaks volumes of the ineptitude and inabilities of the architectural team that put this world class laughing stock failure onto our streets.
Best avoided for something (anything) with a little more style or class (like a wheelie bin or council tip).
A spot to admire the liveliness of Melbourne cbd, photogenic place as well.
Beautiful complex at the heart of Melbourne; many cultural events are held here.
Amazing place to be here, we find lot of events going on each day, we see galaries, events, food courts nearby, it is just a step away from Flinders Station.
Very nice place to visit and hang around at, but the name is lie, it is not square shaped, so if you re after an actual geometric square, look elsewhere. Otherwise very lovely, would recommend. A+ cool looking stuffs
Popular public space in Melbourne CBD area, opposite Flinders Street Station. It is a venue for arts, culture and public events in Melbourne, and it has a busy atmosphere with a bustling vibe. There are plenty of restaurants nearby for a meal or to grab a latte, and it hosts a large public screen which broadcasts major events like t hug e AFL and Fifa World Cup. It is a great meeting place due to it being open and spacious, and easy to find.
The area is decorated at Christmas time with a large tree, nativity ornaments, outdoor seating and a grotto for children to visit.
Christmas vibes in Fed Square. Fed square is often buzzing with things to do especially when there's an event on or special time of year to celebrate. Located just outside flinders st station such a beautiful site and what Melbournians would say is a popular spot in the city especially when there's events on along the Yarra River.
Thoroughly recommend the free tour of Federation Square. There's so much to learn about the history of the site, how it was designed to link with the surrounds and the ways people interact with the space. Fascinating. Our tour guide inspired us to come back and explore in more depth.
Nice open space, not particularly well laid out but open space is great in any city. Not a lot to rate tho
A meeting place for people, next to the Cathedral and Flinders railway station just by the Yarra river , lots of shops .
Went with my cousins on the 10th of May.
Nice area with street vendors and local art gallery
Very festive, visit it when you are in Melbourne cbd
There are always many activities on weekends and holidays, but the toilet is dirty.
Its a somewhere you just simply have to visit. It has all sorts of goodies
Like the clean environment and sunshine. Spent half morning there.
Must visit place. Heart of Melbourne city. Next to Flinders Street train station and good place to take Panorama pics. Yarra river, free trams and gardens with lake view, ducks and boats and many more to explore at Federation Square.
Variety. Events. So many things happen here, and it's just a good public space.
Its a great place however it is big anti-climax and the hype is all nothing. The food around the area is also extremely expensive.
I love Federation Square. There so much resturant to check out and bars too. The Flinder station is a beautiful building to check out. The FS is a perfect location all right in your hand. There is a nice Catheral church. There an Arts Centre Melbourne right there. You cannot go wrong finding a place to eat. I never had trouble finding a place to eat. There a nice metro store to buy sandwhich for a low cost. coffee shops at every corner. There a lot of souviner shops around. I past by a very nice hotel the Hiltel Double Tree hotel that give you cookies when you check out like they do in the USA. I walked into the lobby and got to talked with the front desk guy question about the room per nice. He was very helpful. He did offer me cookies but I decline snice I was not really checking out. I probably should of had to see if the cookies taste the same as it is in the USA double tree hotel. I will be sure to come back to the FS. There is a mesuem I miss is the Immigration mesuem not far from the hostel. I will be sure to go there next time I go to Melbroune.
One of the main focal points of the CBD, there's always some type of event happening.
A good rendez vu spot...
Many things to see and do.. Jumpoff point in Melbourne
It's really amazing place. I hope to visit this place one day.
Such a lovely place to just chill out with family trains trams buses & the river one of the must see places when you visit Melbourne, I give it 5 stars. I hope the Muslims are sent to their mosques to pray it's intimidating which is exactly what they want the non believer to feel, so please send them to their mosques they do not represent beautiful Melbourne.
Present in the lists of the 10 best public squares in the world, it is considered one of the main tourist spots in Melbourne. The square is quite recent, opened in 2020 as a result of an architectural competition, which is still the subject of controversy many people think the beauty of the square is doubtful. Fed Square receives millions of visitors each year and several events take place in its surroundings. It is an ideal place to start exploring Melbourne.
Interesting place. The kids room is hopeless. Even if nothing is going on, it's a good place to sit and watch.
Vibrant place with heaps of cafes, restaurants and other venues. Event are mainly organised here so it is usually crowded. Lots of people love the architecture but I do not believe it reflects what Melbourne is about. And since it is a main place to catch up, very central and therefore a kind of Melbourne representative I give it 1 less star for how it looks like
