An absolutely gorgeous and impressive piece of engineering. Had wanted to visit my whole life and it did not disappoint. Well worth looking at it from both ends where there is parking. Also worth walking across if you have the time.

You cannot predict the beauty and grandiosity of this bridge until you visit it in person! The views are amazing and ones you will cherish forever. Not to mention it's free to walk! Highly recommend!

It is situated in san Fransisco. It is very beautiful. While you are in flight may be you can not see because of the fog. But it is very near to the airport. The bridge is very old and very popular among the tourist. The bridge is red colored which looks very beautiful in day light.

Amazing place. One of the my favorite. I love to look at golden gate bridge from the bottom. There's a spot, called something like fort, under the golden gate bridge from San Francisco side. I love this place. But anywhere you take a picture it would be still perfect

Before the bridge was built, the only practical sh...

Before the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay. A ferry service began as early as 1820, with a regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for the purpose of transporting water to San Francisco.[10]

The Sausalito Land and Ferry Company service, launched in 1867, eventually became the Golden Gate Ferry Company, a Southern Pacific Railroad subsidiary, the largest ferry operation in the world by the late 1920s.[10][11] Once for railroad passengers and customers only, Southern Pacific's automobile ferries became very profitable and important to the regional economy.[12] The ferry crossing between the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco and Sausalito Ferry Terminal in Marin County took approximately 20 minutes and cost $1.00 per vehicle,[when?] a price later reduced to compete with the new bridge.[13][better source needed] The trip from the San Francisco Ferry Building took 27 minutes.

Many wanted to build a bridge to connect San Francisco to Marin County. San Francisco was the largest American city still served primarily by ferry boats. Because it did not have a permanent link with communities around the bay, the city's growth rate was below the national average.[14] Many experts said that a bridge could not be built across the 6,700-foot (2,000-metre) strait, which had strong, swirling tides and currents, with water 372 ft (113 m) deep[15] at the center of the channel, and frequent strong winds. Experts said that ferocious Although the idea of a bridge spanning the Golden Gate was not new, the proposal that eventually took hold was made in a 1916 San Francisco Bulletin article by former engineering student James Wilkins.[16] San Francisco's City Engineer estimated the cost at $100 million (equivalent to $2.3 billion today), and impractical for the time. He asked bridge engineers whether it could be built for less.[10] One who responded, Joseph Strauss, was an ambitious engineer and poet who had, for his graduate thesis, designed a 55-mile-long (89 km) railroad bridge across the Bering Strait.[17] At the time, Strauss had completed some 400 drawbridges most of which were inland and nothing on the scale of the new project.[3] Strauss's initial drawings[16] were for a massive cantilever on each side of the strait, connected by a central suspension segment, which Strauss promised could be built for $17 million (equivalent to $399 million today).[10]

Local authorities agreed to proceed only on the assurance that Strauss would alter the design and accept input from several consulting project experts.[citation needed] A suspension-bridge design was considered the most practical, because of recent advances in metallurgy.[10]

Strauss spent more than a decade drumming up support in Northern California.[18] The bridge faced opposition, including litigation, from many sources. The Department of War was concerned that the bridge would interfere with ship traffic. The US Navy feared that a ship collision or sabotage to the bridge could block the entrance to one of its main harbors. Unions demanded guarantees that local workers would be favored for construction jobs. Southern Pacific Railroad, one of the most powerful business interests in California, opposed the bridge as competition to its ferry fleet and filed a lawsuit against the project, leading to a mass boycott of the ferry service.[10]

In May 1924, Colonel Herbert Deakyne held the second hearing on the Bridge on behalf of the Secretary of War in a request to use federal land for construction. Deakyne, on behalf of the Secretary of War, approved the transfer of land needed for the bridge structure and leading roads to the "Bridging the Golden Gate Association" and both San Francisco County and Marin County, pending further bridge plans by Strauss.[19] Another ally was the fledgling automobile industry, which supported the development of roads and bridges to increase demand for automobiles.[13]

The bridge's name was first used

Once called "the bridge that couldn't be built," today it is one the seven wonders of the modern world. This magnificent span, perhaps San Francisco's most famous landmark, opened in 1937 after a four-year struggle against relentless winds, fog, rock and treacherous tides.

The Golden Gate strait is a gap in a mountain range that was cut by an ancient river that passed through what was a dry valley until 10,000 years ago. That was when sea level was over 100 meters lower than today. The melting ice caused by the end of the last ice age raised the level of the sea, and the ocean slowly flowed back up the river canyon to form San Francisco Bay. Today, 60% of the rain and snow that falls on the State of California still drains through the Golden Gate.

Its a beautiful marvel of human ingenuity that spans a great, beautiful portion of God's creation. There are few more beautiful man-made landmarks in the world. It is truly a modern wonder of the world.

What a wonderful bridge to take a stroll on.

San Fran is always foggy so find the time when there is no fog for good pictures.
Fortunately i went at a time when there was no fog and when i was abt ti climb fog started to come in. So i got both kinds of pictures.

One side of the bridge sidewalk is reserved for pedestrians and other side is for bikers. Which is a great way to manage traffic.

There is a cafe right next to pedestrian walkway and a gift shop.

The restrooms are generally very crowded.

One of those iconic landmarks that is part of our consciousness. It's like meeting an old friend that turns out to be more magnificent than you anticipated. A really wonderful piece of human engineering. In case you are were wondering, I really enjoyed meeting this bridge. Brilliant.

Our family's visit to the Golden Gate bridge park was very nice. We were able to park on the right side of the highway and take the pedestrian crossing over to the other side where the bridge can be seen. The walkway was only a little creepy (you're under a bridge) and there were a lot of stairs but we all made it (ages 42 to 76). There are restrooms there if needed. A beautiful view on a pretty day.

We have ridden bikes both ways across the bridge and have gone on the Saucelito side up to the view areas. And the City side near Cliff House for the opposite view. We love the bridge and when we are in the Bay Area we don't resist its call. We have taken thousands of pictures in all weather, day and night of the beautiful bridge.

Came on a sunny day and it was awesome. Parking wasn't at all terrible and we found a good spot just right below the bridge. There was a climb to the bridge itself but it was not all bad because of the path already paved. It was a Memorial Day weekend and was busy. Still the crowd did not stop me from having a great time with family. Did not see any sea lions though..i guess next time.

A must go to place when you are in San Francisco. There are lots of places nearby to just sit and relax. You can walk with your favourite ones and spend some time during sunset. The trip to Golden Gate Bridge itself will be pleasant given the route you may have to take

Pretty impressive and even better weather in the summer. A must see landmark. We are from Texas and showed up on the tour bus (open top) in shorts and a t - shirt. Felt like a good Texas winter in the middle of July.

If you re in San Francisco you have to go there. The bridge is just so massive and really fascinating. I recommend to rent a bike and drive over the bridge as well as take pictures from a place where you can view the bridge in all of its beauty.

We were fortunate that it was a sunny day and wind was just 8 miles per hour. We could take lot of pictures. There are many spots on both side of bridge to take pictures. Parking is difficult to find on san Francisco side even thought it is paid. The route from hill is very scenic.
