More unorganized airport is difficult to imagine. Yesterday the flight to Moscow was like taking the Bastille. Miraculously all have escaped. When there were few minutes left before the departure of the plane, and passengers, not through their own fault, did not even pass passport control, the passions heated up to the limit. All rushed into an open booth with a border guard who stamped passports with the speed of light. Next, everything is as if in a fog))). This airport is a dark spot in such a wonderful place as Crete))

I would have given it 0 stars if given the chance. Probably the dirtiest airports I ve ever seen. Hope you like using the toilet with no toilet paper or locks...or soap.
Already my 10th visit to Heraklion airport. The airport has a hard time handling the volume of passengers. There are long queues at all stations (day and night). You have to take your checked baggage to the security check / X-Ray from the check-in counter. Scoreboards mostly broken or without function. Because of the crowds it is noisy, dirty and worn everywhere. The plane transfer takes place exclusively by bus (no gate bridges available) or on foot.
Lack of air conditioning, dirty especially in bathrooms, chaos, queues without separate lanes, plus fast and easy personal clearance and cheap water behind the gates (0.7 EUR).
When landing, the sensations are interesting, as if the plane was about to land directly on the water. And only a few seconds before the touch, the runway appears. And then - a feeling of a provincial airport with the international code HER :) Prices in duty free are high, it is more profitable to buy in supermarkets. Cleanliness does not shine, bustle, the flows of people are poorly divorced. IMHO, the airport of Rhodes (Diagoras) is superior to this significantly.
If you are visiting Heraklion airport, you must have angelic patience. Upon arrival, the piston for short baggage belts, badly marked arrival airports (we arrived from Katowice, and the pickup on the baggage belt was marked: Athens) - you must search for luggage by flight number. Check-in and departure from this airport is a ordeal that I went through twice. Plunger, malfunctioning air conditioning, confusion, staff do not know when it will be departing, changing the boarding position without entering it on the board.
A horror experience. Terminal building terribly small and not adapted to a huge number of passengers in the season. In addition, inside it was terribly damaged, broken and worn seats, falling off tiles, dirty walls, yellow streaks on the ceiling. Disgustingly dirty. Sticky seats and floor, fear of sitting on anything. Stuffy and stinks. I don't know how it goes through any hygiene tests. It's best not to touch anything!
Airport very small, old and VERY SOFT! in the changing room no soap or paper to wipe the hands after washing, just a trash to throw the pampers and that's it! the drinks / food overpriced and not top. I have already been to many airports but I hope I will never have to go through that one again.
Unfortunately, you have to give a star, the airport has not even earned. Something of dirty and unhygienic! I just wanted to pee on the ladies' room and thought I must vomit soon and two ladies are still there to leave a "good" impression? Very unfriendly staff, everything is not fast enough! I travel four times a year and have never been to a crowded airport than here. In the Duty Free area you do not see what you can take with you and what is "only" intended for Switzerland! I could write here forever ...
Organization of the airport-rubbish! All the queues in the pile, Poles, Russians, Estonians, the British are rushing about, not knowing where to get up, that would luggage off after registration and weighing, which are produced elsewhere. On the ticket-gate A3, and there is a surprise waiting for you, this is an airplane to another city, and your horse knows where. Excuse me, heat, turn to buy water. In the toilet there are no seats on the toilet, feel like a Cretan eagle !!!
Dirty, overcrowded and even non safe i would say. One of the worst airports i have ever seen. There is a lounge by Mouzenidiz travel, which cost 35 euro per person. But it is before departures hall and passport control and quite far. So almost senseless to go there.
Rudest Airport security I have ever encountered, threw my handbag into the box so it's contents fell out. Aside from that check in and security went smoothly. Despite masks being mandatory at the moment there is little in terms of checks that passangers actually wear them (and most aren't wearing them correctly). Due to the size of the airport there is little social distancing. Location is great with easy connections to heraklion city, only 15minites drive.
-Arrival very good, suitcase received quickly. -You had to wait a bit when you left, but if you are there two hours before departure it's absolutely no problem, you still have enough time. -The drop-off baggage was accepted directly at the check-in, you didn't have to carry it through half the airport as often mentioned. -The staff was very friendly and professional, requests for space were received in a friendly manner. -The cleanliness was ok No comparison to Munich and other airports, of course, but perfectly adequate.
This can be a benchmark for a crappy airport. Check-in is messy, then you need to take your luggage to the x-ray belt (another queue of course), no working aircon...limited food offers...
Far too crowded even during Corona times. Gastronomic offer is manageable, waiting times are very long. After all, water is reasonably cheap. Boarding exclusively by bus, although only 100 meters to the plane. At Gate A1 on the upper floor it is a little quieter, but also much warmer and more stuffy.
Worst airport ever! Dirtiest overflowing toilets and shabby unattended hally and interior. This compared to east europe and asia. No usable WiFi! No one ever connected. For the overcrowded waiting halls with ques see the picture.
One of the worse airports I ever been on. There are big cues before and after the security/in-check points. The toilets are very dirty and there is nothing to do before or after the security. Only plus is that there is free Wi-Fi which is somewhat stable.
This was without a doubt the worst airport experience of my life. Terrible organisation from all points of view and mediocre facilities. The gate was announced last minute but there were two separate security control areas for gates 1-7 and 8-12 so we were forced to wait, despite arriving very early at the airport. Then the queue for security would have taken an hour to get through and we were forced to queue-jump. The plane left late because of yet more passengers being stuck in security. Plus they managed to botch the check-in and put someone else in my partner's seat, so I had the pleasure of enduring a 4 hour flight alone with all the extremely pleasant onboard staff (Transavia) at a loss as to how it happened. I will be avoiding this airport at all costs in future.
Total chaos, poor instructions. Almost missed our flight since there is no good system for waiting for your gate to open and waiting in queue for your opened gate. Too crowded. Changing room for babies absolutely filthy, almost made me consider if the place has ever been cleaned .
Small airport, in relation to El. Venizelos and Macedonia, however, polite officials follow the safety rules due to covid ... It could possibly be bigger, considering that millions of tourists travel from there, for 6 months a year! ..
For most people this airport will be OK. In contrast with the worst reviews, AC was working, signs were there, staff were communicative, but indeed toilets are bad, but then again it is typical for Greece.
The main thing is to understand where your flight is registered))) then the airport will not be annoying. Duty free fries no worse than the bohemian Nice
Terrible. First you check in, that you have to hire again to deliver the suitcases. If you go through the security check, you expect a blistering heat and with relaxed duty free that has nothing to do. The selection of gastronomy is in fact not available. Too few seats, if you have to wait for the flight. A nightmare.are the toilets. I do not know anything so dirty from any airport. Positive: the nice employees.
It was very good, arriving and picking up luggage 25 minutes. Mega surprise at the departure, all the briefing took us 14 minutes from the moment of entering the airport, almost like in F1. But I think we were just lucky. Toilets on the minus, without a flashlight, there is nothing to enter, but the water was :-). In total, everything was clear and understandable without any major surprises. The number of charters and people is huge. Probably it looks worse in the high season because the airport is tiny.
Organization Catastrophic and dangerous !!! I returned last night from crest to Paris !! flight normally at 20 h 25 l luggage registration to last too long in a suffocating heat !!! with not enough counters! once customs pass !! overpriced sandwiches and unattractive people !!! In brackets not kind at all boarding direction and the nightmare begins !!! the aircraft advertised in A3 and A2 then A1 then A2 then A1 imagine the crowd movement with babies and old people. in the crowded Escalator there could have been an accident with no staff to give you real information !! Bands of incapacitated ... an international airport surely no! bad !!! shame about such a beautiful island like the ridge it does not do not deserve that: organization = 0 / passenger safety = 0 / respect of customers = 0 // professionalism = 0 / short change of job .... that's so no we had a great stay in beautiful beautiful country
Flew out of the airport sunday the 3. od September. The place was absolute chaos! The terminal was packed with people trying to queue up for check in, bagage drop and security. The lines weren't utterly disorganized with no tape to separate the different lines. People were pushing in to queues and the staff weren't doing anything to try to control the situation. It was horrible and stressful! We waited in 4 different queues for two and a half hours and only just made our flight.
Corona? There are no here .. Hundreds of people are crowded together ... that will be the new Super Spreader .. Organization ZERO, distance ZERO waiting areas totally overcrowded .. Toilets totally dirty ... Level of a developing country ...
Not just a bad, but dangerous experience in the midst of the covid-19 epidemic. Passengers and staff, WHOEVER and WHEN they wished or were comfortable wearing a mask, most bottles of antiseptics were empty, the toilets probably dirty for hours maybe even days. In the waiting area of exit A7 no prevention for distance between passengers, we sit next to each other and of course the culmination was when the boarding started where a FULL of passengers had to go down one floor without any guidance from people of the airline and we were crammed in line in order to board in the order announced to us by the loudspeakers. Unfortunately, maybe my trip to the island was safer by boat and this thought makes me very sad and mainly because of the almost double travel cost.
Watch out for your luggage ... A disaster !! At check-in I was told that my suitcase was opened, something illegal was found inside (there was no such thing of course) A hostess of Swissport (incompetent, to wonder if she knows her job and the airport) accompanies me down to the baggage. I see the suitcase of my daughter, dirty, exploded, padlock and broken zippers !! Nobody has any explanation, the woman who scans suitcases and baggage handlers either ...! I had to pay 8 to film the bag so that it can go in the hold! Inside the bag was a small purse (empty of course) I guess they expected there to be money in it ... I obviously had no answer to the mail I sent to the airport
Very small for the amount of traffic going through it. Not a great selection of shops within it and overall very basic and uncomfortable. Though it's the complete opposite when you arrive, your bags are quickly off the plane and before you know it you are on your way to the hotel just flights out of it are frustrating.
Not enough waiting places in front of the boarding gates! With a plane that was 20min late, we spent 1h30 standing stuck like in a crowded metro .. The airport would deserve a terrace
By far the worst airport because I have been allowed to visit so far. It starts with the fact that the ladies and gentlemen at the check-in counters really have better things to do than check in the brisk flood of passengers for their respective flights. They prefer to chat, be silly or obviously play on their smartphones. The great thing is that you queue up twice, once to weigh your luggage and then again to check it. So here you get 100% of the fun on top !!!!! Really a treat, because with the bad air conditioning, you immediately feel like you are on the beach in the midday sun. If you don't like cooking in your own juice, take a change of clothes with you. After that, it goes to the security check, which was really frighteningly fast, because here too the staff is busy with other activities. When you arrive at the gates, there is hardly any space. There are at least 3 times as many people as there are places. The whole airport is totally overcrowded, noisy and hardly air-conditioned. The staff doesn't understand English and the announcements are in even poorer English. The icing on the cake are the toilets, where you stand centimeters in urine as soon as you enter. The cleaning lady I met in the men's room didn't mop the floor with her mop, but the walls ?! You have to set priorities ... If you can and want to avoid it, definitely fly over Chania.
I can NOT join the predecessors. Huge airport with a large duty free shop, food stalls and cafes. Everything has been modernized Prices are also ok for the airport (a water 60 cents) So some comments I can only shake my head !! As if things are getting better in Germany LOL (pretzel and coffee in the Munich airport 15 ) then Ma times glad that some never fly back to Greece with such lousy comments! The airport is clean and in Germany there is not enough seating, was already Munich in August last year and there was a mega chaos we would sit in front of the gate. So grab your head before you comment on this!
