A small and old airport, most things are broken and worn. How had to wait a long time for the luggage because it was jammed because the conveyor belts were overloaded (no wonder if 1 roller conveyor is responsible for 3 planes)

One of the busiest but most abandoned airports.
Big surprise the latest renovation extension.
It has now become a European standard with many stores, a modern luggage control area and finally a decent waiting area.
The strange thing is that they have thought about the departure process. The "gates" are steep narrow stairs that take you to the airstrip !!!
We landed at the airport Heraklion late at night on 28.07.2019 and I have to say that it was very dirty in the arrival terminal. BUT, as fast as there we have never had our luggage and were within 20 minutes of landing already outside!
When departing on 06.08. We also had no problems, check-in was fixed, suitcases are now directly checked in at check-in. Despite excess baggage we had to pay nothing. The departure area is newly renovated and was very bright and friendly. Many shops, enough seats and also the sanitary facilities were ok. Whatever you have to say, all the staff were very friendly.
All in all, the "airport experience" was ok :)
At long last this airport has new toilets, unfortunately they still don't have seats as yet, but they are now really clean and nice to use.
This airport is too bizarre to be, this airport can not handle the many holidaymakers at all!
On arrival much too busy 4/5 flights on 1 band.

Upon departure, check in separately and then again with suitcases peddling to X-ray.
Far too few seats for departing passengers.
It is thanks to the Hospitality of the Greeks and the beauty of the island that people here on holiday included myself because go back next year!
Not enough seating and when you do find a seat, you would find better in a bus shelter. Stuffy, scruffy and generally unpleasant especially when flight is delayed. A couple of bars but nothing to write home about.

The only good thing about this airport is that I'm gone. Far too small for the many passengers, overpriced, incomprehensible announcements, miserably long waiting times. I fly a lot, but I've never experienced anything like that.
Chaotic, far too small airport with mostly strange processes. Check-in and baggage check-in are particularly inefficient. Security control went quickly and the responsible staff was friendly. Behind the lock there is the atmosphere of an Indian train station, as I introduce it to. Okay, there are no animals there, but otherwise hygiene, background noise etc. are certainly close.
Heraklion airport is 100 times better than it was 5 years ago, alot cleaner and departures lounge been modernised, now arrivals at the airport could do with upgrading
I'm really sorry to write this review. The worst experience ever. We arrived at night from Manchester and the stench from the toilets reached the room you enter before checking your passports! Miserable situation! The English were shocked! A year ago!
Greek tragedy, small (low) airport, no information about the flight, we stood over one hour before check-in without information what was happening with our flight, we heard from the crew only "No problem" so much they had to say.
Old airport - during covid 19 pandemic was very crowded and it wasn t possible to make social distancing at all ! No air bridges - all passengers are boarding and disembarking thru air mobile stairs - and aircrafts are parked at remotes parking areas ! So buss travel is needed .
No operating business class lounge inside schengen area ! Pricey F&B products inside airport area !
Pretty old and not very clean airport. Employees at the search work quickly, but here at the passport control was a collapse. Almost simultaneously, 3 major international flights took off, and only 3 people checked passports.
Worst airport I ve ever experienced in my entire life, staff have faces like a slapped ar*e food is absolutely shocking, the airport has next to no room. Honestly is the worst airport I have ever ever been to, wouldn t recommend it to anybody. Unless you enjoy dealing with absolute c***s, shocking. Need knocking down with all the staff inside it.
I've been to many airports around the world and even to really exotic places, but this one tops the list of being the worst one. Disorganized chaos, strange check-in procedures where you have to lift the luggage yourself through the x-ray machine, completely outdated equipment and no Wi-Fi. What a shame.

Small old airport has been renovated a bit. However, still very much in need of repair and renovation. Toilets broken, ancient and dirty, should be urgent, taps torn off or water runs continuously !!! Airport staff nice and helpful.

It's like an airport in construction ....
I cant say it was bad. Its a small airport with some funny complications. So for example you have to checkin at the counter. For some airlines no electronic checkin is possible. But this checkin counter is not taking your baggage. After checkin in you have to bring your luggage by yourself to another counter. There is another staff to take your suitcases or bags. Then you can go through the security.
The cheap airlines are not at the gates. They are parking at the taxi field. You have to go by airport bus. The toilets are not very nice.
Failure. The lines are already on the street. Do not get through, the organization is terrible.
An absolute sh!th#le!!!! This airport is dirty and smells of piss. Toilets will take you back to 14th century when a very little about hygienic standards were known. A toilet where you cannot even lock yourself.
The management of the airport and whoever is responsible for not rebuilding the airport to meet the volume of the tourism traveling to the island SHOULD BE FIRED INSTANTLY!!!! Crete is the largest of the Greek islands!!! It deserves a better airport. This is by far the worst airport experience! Shame!!!
Very few places to sit, a little disorganised and not too many facilities. Security screening system seems impractical.

Very dirty airport , Urine soaked toilet floors in gents . Lady at coffee shop tried to overcharge us , then when confronted had a go at us rudely . If you want drinks coffee or snacks go outside arrivals cross car park and there is a white kiosk where all the taxi drivers and bus drivers go . Very friendly and good value .

Since I have a lot of traveling professionally and fly every week I have to say that I have never experienced such an airport. Dirty, loud and absolutely out of date. The security check is pure show - a sense of security does not occur.
From a visit to the toilet facility, I can only advise against. They are dirty and have apparently never been repaired.
The airport is bad enough about how many people are flying here. Mainly, they are beautiful shops, but toiletries, seating, etc. are quite desperate.

Disgusting Airport, worst I have ever been too! Very poorly organised with rude staff! We witnessed people stuck in a lift consistently pressing the alarm and being ignored! Rubbish stacked in corners, total lack of direction and security. The toilets are a health hazard, the whole building should be condemned!! Gates where changed every few moments.
The tragedy of the PRL lacks only rats running around the facility.
Dirtiest airport in the world. Heavily crowded, no air conditioning. I don't think toilets have ever been cleaned. Such a mess! No more visits from my side to Crete.
It stands out from the European standard for about 30 years. The rest of Greece is more enveloped than this airport.
Arrival was good. Departure was very bad.
We were traveling with two little children.
The security check was horror.
The stuff is super unfriendly, however they should be happy for every tourist during these special times. There is no reason to be so arrogant. They send each of us three times through the scanner and let us wait ages with 1 year old in the arm - putting other people in front while both kids were crying.
Big shame for such a nice islands and the great Greek people!

our transfer arrived 150 minutes before departure. the switches opened 120 minutes beforehand. From then on we were checked in within 20 minutes. therefore no complaints.
But the toilet facilities are really under every criticism. duty free quite nice. gastro quite expensive, but that is the case at every airport.
we didn't find it quite as bad as in the other reviews.
however, it is not a beautiful airport.

Small village airport without passenger bridges, bus ride to the plane. Super fast check-in (2 minutes) without waiting, fast security check. Negative point: sanitary facilities without soap and towel paper.
First of all: the word is "queue".. not cue or que.. by the way. Huge queues everywhere and not enough seatings for all .. one lady doing the boarding of a full Easy jet plane, Airbus to Bristol and leaving first all speedy boarding in a remarkable unspeedy way... all the others had to wait till she delayed the boarding for another 20 minutes because of a Malaysian couple travelling and she had to confirm their visas.That should be checked and confirmed during check in and not during boarding result, one hour delay of our flight cause our plane missed the "queue" to depart! Then all is awfully overpriced and Everest just closed their second shop which is next to the duty free shop at 10 pm.. and everybody was buying overpriced and warm drinks from the duty fee shop. I do pay enough money for my ticket and I do request basic requirements: the toilets should be clean, there should be enough seatings and drinks and food should be affordable for everyone, especially when huge delays occur.
If you want to have an epochal experience, this is a great place: D entering there you feel like at the train station on some back: D
It's a very expensive airport. There is only one shop and the prices are 30% or more than regular tourist shops (which are also expensive). At the security check they rush you and you don't have time to take out your belt or metal items so they will check you again manually.

Upon arrival, the airport surprises that the suitcases are relatively quickly on the belt.
The production is problematic. There is chaos. But less from the Greek side. The chaos is mostly created by sheer free-spinning and egomaniac tourists.
The toilets are not good and mostly very dirty. The entire airport looks rather gloomy and dreary.
Totally sloppy place. It's dirty. Dyutik is only one and is stupid. In flights beyond the Schengen zone, there is a pandemonium, there are not enough seats in the waiting room, there are only three cafes. The business lounge is only open until 22 pm. At the time of arrival, everyone is pushed into the settling hall where the slowest personnel work in the world;) Add the stuffiness in the street. Uff.
This airport is just a big CHAOS, bad toilets and over crowded terminals.

Who thought it's a good idea to put airport so close to center? Old town is super noisy from 6:30 am to midnight.
Too many people, few seats, toilets not maintained, probably do not know the air conditioning. We are still delayed and can hardly breathe. ...... outdated airport and upon arrival here we were completely shocked. Our Prague Airport is completely different - much better ......
Badly organized, unworthy toilets, long waiting times, investment backlog.
Lots of flies, bins are full at the check-in area, only one cafe, lack of seats, limited shops. It can get pretty crowded. Only plus point is check in, security clearance and boarding is fast because space is small. And need not walk too far to get to the gate
