Small but good! If you want to see the city and do not need much space, you are in the right place. Right next to the main train station you can reach any place quickly and the staff are happy to help, if you do not know where to go and also have really good tips.

I can not recommend this hostel. The rooms and bathroom are tiny. The windows can not be opened on the 1st floor, there is a glass pane in front, so we had no chance to air. It was stuffy and hot in this room. If you sit in the bathroom on the toilet, you have the opportunity to hold on to the sink and at the same time the feet off. If you need a little more space, it is impossible. We will definitely not come here anymore.

Booked 6 bed dorm, room was pretty cleans and bed linen as well. Washroom was small and the washbasin is too small which is hardly one can use.
Staff were pretty friendly and helpful. There are lockers available too at minimal charge of 4,6 euros for24 hous and small time as well.
We booked through hostel world so we didn't get the free breakfast so I would recommend to book from their website so that one could be able to enjoy free breakfast as the same price.

I really enjoyed my visit to this hostel. It was my first time in a hostel and I was surprised how cool the other people were. The hostel was neat and nice. The rooms were nothing special. Youth hostel-like with More

I've stayed in many hostels and this location is not recommended. Whenever I needed help or to ask a question at the front desk, the staff were always overwhelmed by guests. I'd often have to wait in line 10-15 mins. Once you could talk to a staff, they were often unhelpful and dismissive. I was there during an extreme heat wave, the windows did not open very much, and the rooms were crowded. When I mentioned this to staff, they told me to avoid coming to Germany during a heat wave! There were no fans available. The bathrooms are in the room which can make it very awkward for privacy. Not a lot of space in the rooms to store luggage, etc. This hostel could use some improvements.

Conveniently situated close to the train station and subway. Basic accommodation - if a room for the night is all you need it's fine. Super friendly helpful staff. Checking in can be a bit manic as very busy. Good beers available.

Unlike the rest of the Generator, the one in Hamburg has a very small bathroom and shower. It was more comfortable to bathe in the showers that were outside the room. More common areas are missing.

I have never been to a Generator Hostel before and have to say that I am very pleasantly surprised. It is ideal for people who want to explore the city through the day and get to the hotel as quickly as possible in the evening. Top location: 4 minutes from the train station, 30 minutes by train to the nearest airport. The furniture consists of a bed and a very small bathroom. There is Free Wlan and 24H a supervised reception. Everything you need and very good for this price.

For a hostel it is very good. Comfortable bed, has lockers and bathroom in the same room. It has a good common area to hang out and its employees are very nice. I would definitely repeat it.

Stayed for 3 nights in room 215 with a private ensuite.

Check in was fairly painless as I'd ready booked and paid. Not much in the way of information from the staff except how to get to my room. I go to the room there's no pillow or sheets on my bunk. Eventually I had to ask a roommate and it turns out that everything is in the locker. Well that would've been useful information from the staff!

The room had 3 bunk beds of 6 beds arrayed against the walls. Pillows were a very square shaped rectangle, but fluffy and comfortable, especially when used as a cushion in a sitting position. Each bunk had a private light, power socket and 2 USB ports. The bed was comfortable, blankets nice and cosy. So kudos for the set up of the beds.

The ensuite shower and toilet were separate, and appear to be some kind of portable container. I've used bathroom cabins on ships and these were about as big. My goodness I don't think I lve ever used hotel showers as narrow as these. I'm not that big and even I thought both the shower and toilet were awkward to use. The drainage in shower is terrible, the water just builds up on the floor. I tend not to keep the water running the entire time, so it wasn't that bad. Others run the shower the entire time and the water covers the whole floor of the cabin, that takes about 15 minutes to drain fully. There's a shared bathroom out in the hallway, but after seeing the blocked toilet, I didn't even want to go in again.

Not once in the three nights did I get a good night's sleep. The door closes too loud, the floor creaks and not firm I think. Even on the upper bunk I could feel people walking about. Every night there were people who had early flights, snoring that was audible even from outside the room, or just plain insomniac. Okay, some of these aren't the fault of the hostel.

The hostel has a lot of common areas to relax and eat with a mixture of seating to suit everyone and also plenty of charging points. Kudos for that.

The hostel has a laundry room with two washing machines and two dryers. These can only be operated with tokens which you get from the reception. It took me 2 minutes to work out where to insert the tokens, which was on boxes behind the machines. Well that would've been useful information from the staff or written somewhere.

On the third night my card stopped working because it was only set up for two nights and I had to get that sorted at the reception.

The WiFi is fantastic, fast and trouble free.

Location wise, the hostel is practically next to Hamburg Central Station and metro. Although most of the attractions are walkable anyway. There are plenty of shops and eateries close by or supermarkets. There's quite a lot of homeless and loitering around the hostel, but they're mostly harmless.

Overall this was not a good stay for me. A lot of the negatives are minor on their own. Most of which happen when traveling and staying in hostels, including other branches of Generator in London, Miami and Berlin. I don't usually let these individual issues bother me and some were outwith the hostels control. That all these happened on one stay coupled with insufficient sleep made it a frustrating three nights.

Location is perfect for easy train and city access. Their advertised "super-fast free WiFi" doesn't allow for any YouTube playback and most webpages load at a crawl. It costs 4 euro just to stream a video or have reliable connectivity. The free version will disconnect after a full registration and email activation, even when it shouldn't. As there is no TV in the rooms, you're left increasing your cell data just to occupy yourself if in the room other than to sleep.

Affordable but could have stayed elsewhere with normal perks for the same person night rate. Recommend for sleep only. No perks to look forward to.

Hotel has no flaws. The door system with the chip cards is the biggest garbage. Good principle, but you have to stick it in 15 times until the door opens. Breakfast is ok. Is on jail level. The rooms are all neat and there is nothing to complain about.

But the bathroom could be bigger. You almost feel like Harry Potter under the stairs.

On the one hand, the location is very cheap because the main station and the public transport network are right around the corner, but you should be careful in the evening because there is really only dirt running through the streets.

Reception is friendly.

To be honest it was a nice experience, best location and not so expensive, here you can feel international and meet alot of people and have fun that i can guarantee.
I would suggest if it get better a little in equipments and food service, other than that i would recommend it.

A very very large hostel, finely refurbished, backpackers friendly and thoughtfully thought out of many details, such as a parking space above each bed with power outlet, light and USB input. The bathroom is a bit hard to get used to, it is super small and tight, but does what it should.

Very good experience. Legendary things have happened in this hostel. unfortunately their beds are too hard. A roommate was apparently disturbed at 1 am and asked whether the wall or the bed was harder. he then hit the metal frame of the bed and then complained that his hand hurt. This hostel also has a good location and breakfast

The room was too small and the bathroom felt like I was on an airplane. The thin Walls made noise go through specially at night which was disturbing in many cases. There was no air conditioning and we couldn t open the window due to noises in the street. You had to rent towels if you needed extra and they will clean only the trash cans

As a place to crash for a night, perhaps, this isn't the worst. If you stay here for any length of time though, you will find this cheerful sign: "Welcome to your pocket bathroom". And it will haunt your dreams.

The beds are fine. The food and coffee are fine. The common areas are loud and fine. The no outside food policy is moderately infuriating if you have dietary restrictions but livable.

But the pocket bathrooms are an idea straight out of hell. Modular, made out of plastic, poorly ventilated, and approximately the size of an awkward hug between distant relatives who dislike each other, these contraptions rapidly become disgusting and frustrate your every move. Even brushing your teeth is an ordeal when a "helpful" shelf hovers just over a head's height from the sink, meaning you will have to turn your head sideways and wedge it right into a gross and often stained affair.

Without a doubt the singularly worst hostel experience I've had so far, but at least the beds were solid and I'd say of decent quality.

Like an hostel, with a modern look and something more.
The room was clean, and I felt always safe.
A lot of young people coming and leaving all the time, but also some families.
I also rent a bike, which it's been an awesome help to visit the city.

The receptionists are very friendly, the place I liked, modern, reminds me of a certain American style. In the main room, it is very lively something that surprised me, since they have a bar. The room that touched me, was of 8 beds, luckily I have touched nice people, you feel it in the atmosphere. There are bathrooms both in the room and in the hallway. On top of it, it's very cheap if you share, what do you want most?

In itself a fancy hotel, only the beds are from the height too small. The toilets are VERY small. The first major problem is that the dining room is too small, when almost all eat for breakfast. The second problem is that it may happen at 9:00 pm that a stranger is standing in the full room sleeping in the room and having to get dressed, then walk to the reception.

I was part of a class in the generator in Hamburg and can therefore also incorporate the opinion of my classmates in this review. At the beginning we saw online pictures of the hostel and were very positive, because they looked very inviting and the rooms seemed quite large. However, this turned out to our disappointment as a misjudgment. The room I stayed in had 8 beds, about 10 square meters in total, not a single closet but only a few boxes reminiscent of a Bundeswehr establishment, a very small shower and a very small toilet, which made you feel as if you were in one Plane. In addition, the floor, as well as the windows were quite dirty and you could not quite open it, but only tilting and this led to such a bad air, that I spent most of the time in the hallway. Of course you have to say that this is a hostel and not a hotel, but a clean room, showers in which you can dry yourself without going against the walls and windows that are completely open or at least air conditioning in my opinion definite Basic requirement for a pleasant stay. The only thing I can credit the Generator Hostel in Hamburg is the location, which is right next to the main station and therefore very good. But the location would never be worth it to stay in such a dump!

Bad points first. Room looks like a prison cell. It's quite unclean in general. Good points relatively good value for money, staff are nice and Hamburg HBF is very close for major train links out of Hamburg

I booked this because all the hotels in the vicinity are fully booked. I had my room in the top floor and the air conditioning was not working. During my stay the weather was hot and even during nights I was sweating.

3 stars because it's cheaper than the normal hotels I book. Overall a below average experience and would not go there again.

We could not book a room because this was supposed to be possible only with prior reservation. The receptionist was very rude, so we opted for another hotel with a much better ambiance for only 9 more per night.

Close to the transport terminal, neat, very nice, very friendly staff, close to shops, restaurants, bars and the main train station in Hamburg. It's wonderful and affordable, it's very cleaned and it's near bars, restaurants and principal train station.

- Area not welcoming, especially when you walk around in the night
- No AC in the rooms and windows cannot be opened, so extremely hot in the summer
- Everything is to be paid in extra (towels, shampoo, soap etc)
- Beds are not even made
In conclusion I do not recommend as I struggle to find positive aspects of this place as it is not even cheap when comparing to other places.

Great location just close to the main bus station and the under ground train is also very close by. Rooms are comfortable except the tiny bathrooms inside. If you want to have a great shower experience, you can use the larger and more comfortable showers and toilet in the hallway.

When we arrived an hour after check-in (at 3:00 p.m., instead of 2:00 p.m.), we had to wait almost half an hour at the front desk for our turn and then another half an hour because our room - despite our late arrival - was not yet ready for occupancy. Organizationally, this could certainly have been avoided.
The prices are deceptive because there are hidden costs: nothing is provided in the rooms except bed linen. It costs 5 euros to borrow a towel, if you don't want to check out before 10 a.m. it costs an additional 5 euros (per person) to be able to check out at 1 p.m. Luggage can be stored in lockers which cost 4-6 euros per day or 1 euro per hour.
Instead of 16 euros for a bed in a 6-bed room, we ended up paying 32 euros per person (+ towel, locker and check-out at 1 p.m.), which was twice as much.
In the morning the cleaner came into the room a total of five times while we were still in bed, switched on the light, cleared things around and spoke to reception via radio. We had to ask him repeatedly to leave the room. At 12:45 p.m., a quarter of an hour before check-out, two cleaning staff started tidying up the room while we were still sitting on the floor and packing up our things.
All in all, the hostel is comfortable and hygienic but also expensive and not that well organized.

Centrally located directly at the main station, very good connection to public transport, nice staff, delicious breakfast, 24 hour reception.
Room small and partly getting old, bathroom a bit small but reasonable, unfortunately only 1 towel per person, shower does not work / only trickles.
Value for money, too expensive for what you get
Conclusion: Generally suitable for a weekend or short trip to Hamburg

I am very enthusiastic about the location. The people are very nice and it's a very relaxed atmosphere. The bathroom may be small, but it is in a motorhome too. Price was also more than okay.

Staff are helpful, bar and breakfast ok, plenty of places to sit and chill out. Just my (6 bed) room was very cramped, and the bathrooms were annoyingly tiny. Would only do for a short stay, or probably good for families travelling on a budget.

60 euros for one night per person to stay in a very noisy room without a chair, table or other shelf and to shower in a camping toilet is simply absolutely inadequate in terms of price-performance ratio. In addition, the walls are dirty and need to be painted. Only the location is okay, but with the price I can also book a hotel and have a TV and more service. Worth a maximum of 20 euros per night.

I like to travel a lot and wanted to experience the German hostel life, so I checked into a 6-bed room here for 3 nights while I had a job at a trade fair in Hamburg.
There is NO KITCHEN! You are not allowed to take food / drinks into the hostel, in the quite expensive restaurant there is only something between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Stupid if you have to go out earlier and would like to make something to take away. The relatively cheap price of the hostel is unfortunately only a facade. The bathroom and shower in the room are tiny, very similar to the toilet on an airplane. In the hallway there is a "normal" bathroom, without soap. There is also no real common room. Too bad. The only good thing is the location right at the main station.

Excellent for short periods it is really unique for the staff one appears that I would call a hog "hospitable" but the rest really all nice and excellent services for great price at excellent location for what concerns moving with the means ..

We stayed in the Generator Hamburg. It was clean and the employees are ready to help. You have to pay 3.5 for a towel. The shower in the room is really small. The laundry room closes at 18h, which is ridiculous.

Great location, comfy beds, tiny but managable bathroom situation. The bar was nice and the food was mediocre. The real problem here was that workers constantly barged into my room while I was changing for no particular reason. They just used a card walked in and started taking trash, or looked at me funny etc

The staff is very friendly.

The staff is very friendly.

The room is small but that doesn't matter because you are out all day. However, I have to say that the shower could use a little more water pressure.

Room for 8 persons way too small and not air-conditioned. Very small selection at breakfast. On the day of arrival, the rooms were not ready when they were "ready" was everywhere Staubbefinden. Bathroom and toilet together smaller than a Dixi toilet. Would never stay there again and recommend it to anyone.
