I don't know about other VA facilities, but I have received good service at this hospital. Yes, it is old and it's not a new high tech facility, but doctors are nice and my issues are being treated without problems or long delays.

Most of the staff is very friendly and I would give them 4 stars, but the shortage of available service providers and the errors that happen because of it get a one star. When I retired and moved to San Antonio it took 16 months before I got an appointment with my primary care doctor. Once I got into the system the care has been Ok with a few errors now and then.

Its a government facility so the establishment is nice, but doctors are underpaid and have too many patients so poor diagnosis and long wait times can be expected. All of the staff members I have encountered have been very pleasant and helpful. This last comment is solely from personal experience concerning patient care. All these doctors wanna do is cut you up, pull all your teeth out, and prescribe you so many meds you'll end up with another ailment from all the pills.

I've been trying to make an appointment for the more than the 3 months and cannot ever get a hold of anyone. I have sat on hold for 45 min to an hour each time for it to timeout and hang up on me, or I simply get a busy tone. I don't have time to go down to the building to make an appointment, so there's not much that I can think of to do...

I moved here a year ago and i guess I am use to California VA getting us in and out in a timely manner as well as having great communication. I dropped my mri images off a month and a half ago and no one bothered to call me to tell me the disk was in the wrong format. I went back to make sure it was uploaded because I have yet to receive a call from surgeon for my spine. I'd love to take a bat to whoever dropped the ball so they can feel my pain. I've been in pain for nearly a year and it seems no one cares. It's completely ridiculous.

Radiologist for my husbands 2 ultrasounds was RUDE. When we were walking into the ultrasound room first thing he said was "YOU HAVE TO WAIT IN THE HALL". He didnt ask my husband if he wanted me there or anything. He made it seem as if it wasnt an option. My husband is PTSD , he barely leaves the house. I have to finagle him to make these appointments. YES my husband wants me there. So as i'm waiting in the hall I kept noticing in other ultrasound rooms spouses are not being kicked out. So I asked a woman radiologist I seen in hallway why I cant be in there and she said I can be, so she went into ultrasound room and asked him why i cant be in there and asked my husband if he wanted me in there and my husband said yes and the radiologist said he thought I was just "SOME FAMILY MEMBER" which is why he told me to wait in hall. "SOME FAMILY MEMBER" ?? CLEARLY IF I CAME TO APPOINTMENT AND WALKED INTO ULTRASOUND ROOM WITH THE PATIENT, CLEARLY PATIENT WANTS ME THERE. Not to mention I'm his WIFE the one who gets him to go to all the appointments in the first place. I'm not just "Some family member". Very interesting choice of words, very RUDE choice of words. So at that point that radiologist had no choice to let me be in the room but by that point the ultrasounds were basically over and he was rude and condescending to me and wouldnt let me look at the picture on ultrasound screen. My husband and I left there pissed off. So far all the VA appointments have been unpleasant with rude people. Maybe if our experiences with staff within the VA system was more pleasant it'd be easier to get my husband to go to these appointments. If u want to know about our Frank Tejeda VA clinic experiences you can read my review on that which is actually what brought us to the Audie Murphy Radiology in the first place.

after reading many of the reviews i can't say i disagree with the one star types or the four star types (never had 5 star treatment here). the longest i've waited/stayed was from 4pm til 2am (no exaggeration) while the shortest visit was an hour (not counting med pick ups). they see those with chest pains faster it seems (it is also stated on posted signs that chest pain treatment is priority). in the worst case i have felt like many of the one star reviewers about the staff and treatment there while other visits were four star worthy. it depends on time of visit, who is on duty, and i would say number of patients present but empty lobbies still had 3+hr wait times to be seen. there is a need & room for drastic improvement but the best way to describe how your visit may go is "roll of the dice". for those new to San Antonio I can only suggest doing what I did when I moved here from Chicago; try it twice then decide. I liked the first visit (quick and professional) and hated the second visit so much i stayed away for a year. But I've been back other times and realized it was a "luck of the draw" type of place) my next visit may be a half-star or another 4 but the spectrum of reviews are indicative of how inconsistent the quality is; 3 star average.

I have waited for hours to be seen. I am new to the Texas area and I am less than impressed with the medical service of our Veterans. The ER staff on duty tonight are less than welcoming and my first impressions are greatly tarnished. I have been in the VA system for years and have never seen nonsense like this. Come on Texas ya'all can do a great deal better than this I know!!

I receive behavioural and mental health care in San Antonio with great results and adequate response times, the folks are respectful and friendly. Short wait times at appointments. They won't babysit, just call with questions, and they'll schedule an appointment if necessary.

i was told there is a seven month wait for primary care visit. "we dont know how to do VA choice." I've been denied treatment for service-connected disabilities and after i went through the freedom of information act office and got copies of my records, it turns out the doctors never documented any of my requests.

World class outpatient surgery care. My surgery yesterday with Dr. Woody-Gross, NP Nakita and the anesthesia team were what you think you deserve when you think of veteran care. Truly a great out-patient surgery center. Care, compassion, punctual, and efficient. I ve never been out under general anesthesia until yesterday and I never felt more at ease about the process. From check in to check out, I was cared for and comfortable. I was informed, at the time I knew who was taking care of me and what role they had in the OR. I can t say every clinic in the VA is great but give kuddos where it s due and they earned theirs over there. Keep up the great work.

Went there to get va to pay for meds that va sent me to private dr needed for after surgery at none va hospital as va san ant refused to take patients from other cities in region they legally have to serve.
Was told I would have to register at er to get dr to write va prescription. Waited 4 hours to see dr. Never saw him, he is the slowest dr I have ever not seen. Does not seem to understand the concept of a emergency room. Many pateints left without treatment. I had surgery the next morning and had to give up. Pain Walgreens over $200.00 for meds the va should have paid for. And will

Really, one slow dr for a city of 2 million? I've been to va,s all over the USA and this is the worst.

Amazed in lack of urgency and compassion in are health care with this place. Had to leave to go to another hospital without them caring, just them saying ok. Ashamed of how our nation takes care of our veterans!

Very rude nurse on the phone when I was requesting assistance. Overly long waiting time, then more rudeness. Not at all satisfied with this particular service. In general, I am very thankful for the VA and its variety of services it offers. But apparently, not everybody I there to assist and help. Here is a tip: If you don't have the patience or are not willing to do the job, then quit and find another job!

I just watched someone yell CODE BLUE. GET SOME PEOPLE OUT HERE in the middle of the ER, and a female employee walked out of triage and asked What s a code blue? My faith in the VA healthcare system went from low to nonexistent. Then, instead of getting out to the patient STAT, the response team simply strolled over. There s someone in need of immediate medical attention and you can t even be bothered to hustle a little bit? That is absolutely unacceptable.

Thank you Mars McMillan for your kind comments & request 1year ago. The team will certainly increase funding for this excellent V.A. Hospital. Do they have a helicopter pad ready? The team at am on based 3-4 miles from one of the launchpads at Kennedy SpacePort will be bringing the newly designed antidote to COVID-19 there after potential pending F.D.A. approval via a WorldWide.com clinical phase 1/2 trial based out of London & headed real son to both Mexico City & U.D.Embasdy Moscow. That project is about to be discussed over a sip of Vodka near Red Square (I'm providing a gift of rare & exceptional cognac to Vladimir just prior to our chess match there).

Said antidote is believed to be 1,200 X stronger than any known vaccine in development. The team will be bringing that antidote north across the southern border of Texas to the San Antonio V.A. I have experienced both ends of the spectrum at this hospital. I have waited six months and had to jump through many hoops to even be seen by the podiatry clinic, but once seen, I have had great care from the podiatrist there. I have experienced ridiculous treatment from a gynecologist many years ago, who refused to provide me with an IUD because....I wasn't married to my boyfriend at the time and therefore prone to cheating. Yeah, you read that right. His "logic", apparently married people don't cheat. LOLS!!! I filed a complaint about that douche bag, but of course nothing was done. I had to pay out of pocket to get an IUD and when I told that doctor what Dr. Douche bag had told me, he couldn't believe it, he was speechless. As if marriage is a qualifying event for an IUD and being married means you are 100% faithful. I also have unique experience with this hospital because I did my practicum here as a Laboratory Science student. In the lab, I saw the majority of workers took pride in their jobs and the responsibility that came with it. I also saw a few lazy dirt bags that didn't care about anything but their paychecks. Those lazy few made the workload bigger for the hard workers, because of course the lab work must be done in a timely manner and done correctly. It is unfortunate that veterans have to get bad care, or no care at all. There are good people here that do care about veterans, but sometimes the few bad apples spoil the bunch.

This place is always a confused mess of employees ...

This place is always a confused mess of employees that love veterans and people who are just doing enough to get by and really dont give a second thought to veterans. From the people running the valet (which needs to go away, it's a waste of staff funding) all the way to the DRs. The receptionists are the worst, all they have to do is smile and check appointments and it's they act as though it's the single worst job in history and need to send you to the kiosk that almost never works.(also a waste of funds)

For us that have no other choice for healthcare its truly saddening. I am currently a younger veteran in my mid 40s and to watch the trouble WW2, and Vietnam Era brothers and sisters have makes me see every day why vets give up on the process. Its designed to make you quit from process to employee.

Let us seek outside help and drs that care about their patients.

They are as useless as ever. I was a employee here and have witnessed all the incompetence here. From Dr's to cooks.... Sad. Helped save lives and never had been credited with not a damn thing, but hate. Figures. I guess I won't be back...how many times can I change Dr's ... Giving out diagnoses like candy .. No real justice in patient care. No matter what.

I'm from the Cleveland OH area and want to spend winters in SA. I believe some people get good care in SA, but it seems 50% do not. I have yet to get good care here and I have left to see a civilian doctor and dentist. If you have Medicare, use it and pay the co-pays. Save time and frustration and probably get better care. Can't wait to get back to Ohio and get the kind of care we disabled veterans deserve.

The emergency room is overcrowded, understaffed and under resourced. I was in a wheelchair and could not walk and waited 15 hours to be seen. The first doctor gave me a shot and I had to ASK for further tests which he then said he could do an xray....(hmmm) then his shift was over and I got a new doctor and he suggested MRI and I agreed and then came back and said he get me in. Many of the people waiting were REALLY SICK and in bad shape and had been waiting 10 hours or more. The guy sitting in front of me had a finger broken (bent in HALF that I could visually see in the waiting room) and he was there 9 hours before they told him they "woke up the ortho doctor." The people there are nice but they simply do not have the resources to be effective and we VETERANS are the only people suffering. Apparently all the changes the VA is underway making haven't made it to this emergency room yet. Such a shame. If I was having something that could actually KILL me like heart palpitations, I would request to be taken somewhere else.

Usually I have an okay experience. Today I have a 0900 appt with PM&R. Arrived early at 0805. Was told I cannot check in until 15 minutes before my appt due to social distancing. I don't see the correlation. Several people arrived after me and checked in. 2 had appts at 0900. They were able to get therapy early. They were obviously over 65 and most likely retired. I am missing out on hours of work. Don't check in with the african american girl with long hair. Check in with the african american girl with the short hair.

My trip to the ER overall was very good. I experienced chest tightness and dizziness the day before and was put ahead of everyone. I was admitted march 2 and my heart was monitored overnight. Cardiologist suggested stress test but was unable to say when and have to wait for a call. I really hope that someday VA hospitals are able to perform any tests necessary for heart patient like me anyday and anytime. I was discharged Mar 3. I was scheduled for stress test Mar 14 after I called and was told at the hospital that they scheduled a wrong type of test. Mar 25 I was seen by a nurse practitioner. Mar 26 I received a call from the nuclear stress test for an appointment opening for mar 27 which I have to turn down because of prior commitment. I was then given a new nuclear stress test appointment for april 18. What a service. I am now in a process of getting my own health insurance.

I am in the processing of pulling my care from here. They are doing absolutely nothing about my chronic pain except giving Motrin and Tylenol. Seriously, I have had this issue over 20 yrs, I think we hav tried it all by now. They cut me off a regiment that was working great. I went from losing weight, working at the gym 4 times a week, working full time, and going to school to someone that can barely clean her apartment. Way to go! I was out of the country when my initial consult letter was sent and had missed the window to establish my first visit. After getting transferred from one VA rep to another, I eventually ended up speaking with Stephanie from Eligibility. I just hope the other VA encounters are just as easy. Thanks Stephanie for your help today.

I think as far as VA hospitals go, the Audie Murph...

I think as far as VA hospitals go, the Audie Murphy is not bad. I come here regularly for tests and blood work. Their phlebotomists are really good they'll have you in and out in a jiffy (they should be with the amount of practice they get). The Sleep Clinic for CPAP is also very well managed and efficient. All in all, I think, given the amount of traffic they have along with their funding, they have to run a streamlined operation and do fairly well at it. If you go here for non-emergency reasons, it is fine.

I will say however, if you come here for serious health issues, you do so because you have no other option. You really put your life in your hands if you are going to have a major surgery at this facility. I have seen some crazy things at the VA. I once saw a man in cardiac arrest dropped off at the stress clinic accidentally when the cardiac surgeon was waiting for him in the operating room. The nurse accidentally discovered it because the patients in the waiting room expressed concern with the man's physical condition (he was nearly passed out in the chair). The nurse freaked out when she found out where he was supposed to be and it took the orderlies who dropped him off 45mins to get to him. This is were the streamlined services and bulk of business at the Audie Murphy creates potentially life-threatening situations. They leave very little wiggle room to address mistakes and emergencies.

Then there is always that odd situation....like when I was getting blood drawn and an old lady in a lab coat walks in with an ancient geiger counter and starts checking it everywhere, on patients, in the trash, in all the cupboards, and the thing is going off like crazy. It's at that point when you ask, "why is there radiation contamination in the blood room?" and then you remember, "oh because I'm at the VA hospital". When "because I'm at the VA hospital" is a plausible answer to the question, "Why is this room radiated?"....that's why you should not get major things done here...unless you have no other choice.

I have been in this VA medical system for 11 years...

I have been in this VA medical system for 11 years and it is by far the best I've ever had care from. No system run by imperfect humans is ever going to be perfect and neither has everything I experienced here been perfect, but overall it is been more than adequate in meeting my needs in a timely manner. The staff is over-worked and under paid and under appreciated, yet I have mostly encountered very pleasant helpful service from everyone on all levels of care and administration. Consistent care at any medical facility requires a pro-active attitude by the patient; this is especially true in any VA system. As patients, we must educate ourselves about how the system works, what are our rights and responsibilities then practice them and reach out to those who can help us when we have a problem. Sitting around complaining does nothing to improve our quality of care or the system. The staff is always thanking me for my service, but I thank them for their's to me and my fellow veterans. For without their sacrificial care (they could chose to work elsewhere for better pay), what would we do? Keep up your great work, ALMH! We need you!

The absolute WORST VA I HAVE BEEN TO!!! They don't do their job, they argue with you, they don't know ANYTHING ABOUT MEDICINE. One of the triage nurses, big booty, blonde, IDIOT, told me that once you receive a vaccination for hepatitis, you NEVER NEED A BOOSTER. I talked with the nurse: INCORRECT. I know because I looked it up. They refuse to panel test you, that means that they won't know what to give you because they DONT KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE! Then they argue the point, they don't know the human anatomy, and they are COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT. I have been to the VA in Oregon, Nevada, Florida, Tennessee, and in TEXAS they get to work there as a nursing assistant, or otherwise WITH NO EDUCATION IN THAT FIELD
This was told to me by a NURSE.

My husband had 2 strokes and was admitted to Audie Murphey. Dr. Dooley-Infectious Disease and Chief of CardioThorasic surgery, Dr. Eppinger and the vast Cardiac teams went over and above the call to identify the cause, the infection and the treatment for my husband. Along with the nursing care on the 5-Medical Inpatient, SICU, and 2W surgical inpatients floors, my husbands care and stay was the absolute best I have ever seen. As an RN, I have worked only in the private sector in the best hospital in La Jolla California, I have never seen any private hospital compare with Audie L. Murphy Hospital.
