I can only say I deal with many, many financial institutions and Athene is absolutely the worst in providing customer service. Their phone reps usually cannot help you; their policies create unnecessary hoops to jump through and their website is no better. Amazing they can stay in business. They need to hire a whole slew of people to fix these shortcomings.

The only good thing i could say is . customer service took care of all my questions and answered them like professionals. BUT i pnly agreed to move my money to Athene from my 401k by my cousin who worked for them. He gave me this huge sales pitch that i will make a decent profit with the anuity he suggested. I agreed with him as he was family. Well after a few years in i saw very llittle growth and was wondering why. So i called my cousin and he told me he quit the company. I said why and his reply was that the company was nnot upfront with how they handled there buisness aspect. It was all about the bottom line with them. He knew this and still sold me on going with Athene. It was just a sales pitch but the worst part he was my cousin. He left the company to selll alll natutal health juices a company that does one of those pyramid schemes like Amway. He actually tried to sell me this health drink. I am liike you lied to me about athene and now yoiu arre tryinng to sell me this stuff. Heck no. . Stay away from ATHENE.

I had to rate at 1 star, because 0 stars was not an option. Run far, run fast from this company. Crooks, is the best way to describe them. They overdrafted my account by taking 11, yes I said 11, monthly premiums at once. Been fighting for a couple of weeks to get it back. Was told last Wednesday (July 27) by Demi and her underlings it would be refunded in 24-48 hours (Friday July 29). Still not there today (Tuesday Aug 2). Then somehow, on Friday (July 29), they enacted a new policy saying overcharges had to be held 7 days before they would be refunded (this came straight from Demi this morning). The people promoting this company are either A) very lucky to not have any problems thus far, B) employees paid to promote this joke of a company, or C) agents trying to expand their business (and obviously haven't taken into consideration this lengthy list of bad reviews as well as the even longer list of BBB complaints, many of which deal with this very same issue). My money is on B. Buyer beware.

My grandparents passed away within a year of each other and that makes my mother and I executors of their estate/trust. In Arizona if a Trust is established nothing needs to go through Probate. I've spent the last 3 weeks trying to get the proper forms so that the Trust can take control of the funds and make it is distributed to the people my grandparents wished.

Not an easy company to do business with. Really don't seem to care about customer service. Found a mistake they made, & trying to get it corrected, has been a nightmare. Have left voice mails, but no luck. Think twice before you start something with them! To post I had to give them at least a 1 star, would have been happy to give a 1/4 star.

Athene is not customer oriented. If you decide to take a monthly withdrawal, you get the wrong forms. They do not call to tell you. One and a half weeks later you get a letter telling you this. You have to ask for a new form, fill it out and send it back. If anything is incorrect, they send you a letter again (even though you provided a phone number and email address asking for them to call) Now, you have to fill out the entire form again and send it back. If you call Athene you get to listen to music for 15 to 30 minutes. No one offers to help you fill out the forms, they just tell which is the correct form, fill it out and send it back. This happens every time you ask for a withdrawal. We sent in the forms for another withdrawal; 15 days later I got anther letter saying the signatures are illegible and to completely fill out the forms again. What happens they convert your paper work to low resolution PDF forms and the signatures signed in ink are barely visible. After calling ( and signing the forms with magic markers) we were told it would be another 15-20 days. This has happened on every withdrawal . We have asked in writing to please call if there is a mistake including a phone number. They never call.

I thought for the last 2 years that maybe they would have gotten it right by now since I've had it changed but they still screwed it up again!!!! Had policy on him and now only "rider" on wife seems to be all we have!! No help either from Athene or Aviva!! Cash value is falling!! Horrible customer service. No response. Gave one star because it will not allow negative numbers. Wife retired this summer. In late November started process to withdraw annuity. Got forms and filled them out. Called for place to email them in December. Uploaded and emailed per instructions. Called a week later and was told they were never received despite having a confirming email. Called again. Same response. Resent documents. Again got confirmation. Each time with our email and phone contact information included. Called and got confirmation of receipt. Asked for expedited delivery, preferably a wire transfer which we were told was not possible. Two weeks later (about the time we were told the check would arrive) we got a letter by mail telling us the documents were insufficient as she needed a letter from an employer she worked for over twenty years ago (a school). That was the first time we had been advised of that requirement. We had to wait for holiday break to be over to ask for the letter which they faxed to furnished number immediately. They received conformation. At the same time we emailed documents and letter again and got emailed confirmation. Called several days later and they denied receiving any documents fax or email. Finally got a rep who let us send package to her direct email address while she was on the phone. She confirmed receipt on the phone and said to call back in two hours as she was forwarding the information now. We called back as instructed and were told there was no record of receiving any documents. By then it was five and they closed. Each of the various calls included 15-40 minutes on hold. All the positive reviews seem to be related to people investing. They are great at taking your money. Good luck getting it back. Customer service reps will not transfer you upstream and say they are powerless to actually do anything. Worst service ever.

If I could, I would give this review a zero. Due to an upcoming medical procedure, I asked if they could close out an IRA and waive the usurious 12% withdrawal penalty and close it out with a check that takes out only federal and state taxes. Not only did they not take out the taxes but they sent me a check with only the usurious penalty taken out. I did not ask for this. With a very helpful representative, she re-deposited the check and the amount was put back into my account according to two follow up conversations with helpful representatives, although they were very protective of higher ranking individuals whom I do not consider reputable. Not only that but I am concerned that the account has lost considerable value despite an overall rise in the market.
My indexed annuity has also lost value despite a rise in market value. I have also been quoted a plethora of penalties and fees when I make the decision to cash in the annuity. This has caused me anxiety that will last my entire lifetime.
In addition to my anxiety over the value of my unfortunate accounts with Athene, they are having considerable trouble getting my name correct on correspondences through the US Mail. I am very particular about the Jr at the end of my name. Due to some stupid technicality, the representative said the new system could not accomodate that. She would try hard on my behalf but could not guarantee any results. I am also very concerned with the inability to get in touch with a supervisor. What are the representatives protecting?

Try getting policy info. I've had mine since 1989. No one can tell me if the premium money I've sent last July and again last January has been placed on deposit.
I was assured on my last request for confirmation I will have an account summary sent by USPS by June 11. That's this Monday. I will follow up with another review next week with results. I am so tired of calling them to hear same story of transition is taking longer than anticipated. If I don't get my summary and confirmation of what's happened to my premium payments by end of June 2018 then I will file a formal complaint with Iowa Insurance Division.

This company is either corrupt or criminally negligent. I had sent my life insurance premium the same as I had for decades before they took over the policy, but the last 2 years they didn't cash the checks I sent, and then converted the premiums to loan plus interest charges. What kind of garbage is that? I'm done with them. I think they are crooks.

Ok. Hoping this saves someone and keeps some money from going into Athene s CEO s pocket. The bad reviews are correct. Had a life insurance policy for 10 years. Same payment for ten years. They notified me once the 10 years was up that my premium would go up. They did not tell me how much. THe premium was multiplied by 16. SIXTEEN times the amount. Yes, you read that right. So, immediately I call and want to cancel the policy. Customer service yes, sure we can cancel your policy and prorate this payment, but we need to send out Surrender request forms and you need to fill out and and return . Sure, I said. So the paperwork comes two weeks later. Ugh. I immediately fill out and fax in. Then I wait for a refund. No refund. But two months later I get a bill for my quarterly payment. Excuse me? So after a hard days work today, I call and get a patronizing customer service person saying they had received my paperwork, but it had not not been dated on the second page. (This was faxed in - so it would have been time stamped) But ok, so now...how to proceed. She said they then sent out new paperwork (I NEVER received this and I have no mailbox thieves) and since I did not send it back and since it has been 30 days, they could no longer prorate my payment. How convenient missy! I might have been a little rude, but I don t regret it and am actually quite proud because I am guessing they get these calls all the time. The convenience of me not receiving the second set of paperwork and the timing says SCAM all over it. Again, they took my money, please do not purchase from them and if they just lose one customer, it will have made my day. SMILEY FACE x 16

****DO NOT WASTE YOUR EFFORT OR MONEY*** This company does not so their due diligence for setting up a an account I would hate to know how they handle money. I submitted paper work for setting up an IRA back in March around the 24th to be exact. Till this day June 25th i still had not received anything inregards to account being set up, no confirmation nothing. Me and my FA had constantly been getting the run around. First something about they couldn't find a code( not Sure what that mean) then sent my sister a cancelation check which they told her they could not even locate her account. That's VERY strange to send a check to applicant if they didn't have an account. Then last week June 19th told my FA "the policy is there but information is in wait status to go out to client because they needed the suitability questionnaire that we completed already when submitted application. So after going back and forth they found it and amd said now they will review everything and call me back that day I informed them if this doesn't get resolved that week this week...We will cancel and go with a different company and my FA will cancel their adviser partnership with them." I checked mail today still nothing. I called Athene and was informed they don't see my account with my name, social and address but do see an account with my address. So I gave 2 more socials and sadly they have my address but account under my deceased mom's social and DOB but shows my info inherited. Mind you the application has all my info on the owner section and my mom's on decedent section . So the rep transfers me over to another rep named Bill and that person said they could not give me info on account since my social is not the one on account. I have no unearthly idea why Athene would set up my deceased mom an account. That shows you they do not read or do any thorough work and have a horrible processing team. I have initiated my cancel with them. This is totaly UNACCEPTABLE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. Please becareful with your money this is how fraudulent companies operate.

Can't get any help! Have automatic withdrawal payment on my Life Insurance. January 2016 payment has not been deducted yet. Called Athene twice this morning and have been on hold for over 35 minutes to get to a representative asking why my monthly payment for my insurance has not been run through my account. Have had this insurance for a long time. Do not want my insurance to cancel. Can't get hold of anyone to research my problem.....just sit on 'hold' on the phone!!

Been with Athene for about 3 years.

Been with Athene for about 3 years.
Bought one annuity with them for about $10,000.
It performed so well that I invested another $150,000. I have annuities with several companies and the index on the Athene product returned around 20% over two consecutive years. I ve taken out 10% free withdrawals and my balance still went up!
That s really satisfying for something that is a safe product. Annuities get a bad wrap from people who don t understand them or if agents/advisors sell them the wrong way.

I m not sure who is saying negative things about them but I find it very suspect.

Athene handles my insurance policy which is owned by Accordia Life. Was sold and policy reviewed for several months. During this time, no premiums were deducted. They were to deduct the premiums on Mar 13, 2017. I have an account just for insurance deductions. On Jan 25, they deducted the premiums individually, causing me to overdraft. Called Athene immediately and sent them a faxed copy of my bank transactions. They are to reimburse me for the premiums and all overdraft fees due to them taking them out 2 months early than agreed upon. Have made numerous calls--even talked to supervisors and team leads. Had gone to "processing"---concluded I wasn't to be refunded--WRONG---called again, team lead agreed to the refunded amount and rushed it to be processed---they have NO rush process. It was to be refunded and a check sent to me overnight. Today is Mar 16 and I still have not received my check!! Just how long does it take someone to see they screwed up and a refund processed??? But they have time to send me a letter telling me how much my premium will be come Apr. Do you really want to have a policy with this company? All I have gotten is the runaround from people. "I am sorry, I do understand" is not what I want to hear. I have had this policy for 20 years and this is the first problem I have had. How long do they take to pay out a life ins policy? A year??? I want my refund NOW........I have seen other reviews of this happening to other people also. A letter is going to the state insurance commissioner!!!!!

I had to give the one star, because there was no place for a negative 5. Their customer service is putrid, I was told that my claim was "being processed" and would be paid out in 10 days. That was on the 20th of Feb. Called them on March 2nd, they said it would be processed on the 6th of March, called them back on the 9th and they said it would be expedited in 24 to 48 hours. We never received a call back or a check, called them back again today, the 16th of March, was told it would be expedited again today, and we be called by 1 o'clock called them back at 2:30, they claim Natilie (supervisor) has not been answering her emails or calls today after we talked to her this morning. March 17, Well it's another day of BS from customer service, talked to Brady today and he said my claim was still being reviewed, after being told yesterday it would be expedited. Then another manager (Will) told me that it would be Monday or Tuesday before a check could be mailed out. He told me that he would call before 5 p.m. tonight. I won't be holding my breath. What a pitiful company this is. As I said I'd give them a negative 5 if I could. Just filed a complaint with the BBB and the Iowa insurance commissioner on 3/17/2017. Surprise! Will called back today and told me that the check will be expedited today, (this is the third person to tell me this in the past 2 weeks) and we will have the check Wednesday morning, we will see.

I love this company! They have the best annuity products on the market, hands down! I wrote one for my aunt last year and her money grew from $142,000 to $167,000. About 18 percent growth, with no market risk!!!!You just can t argue the numbers. As far as customer service, maybe they need to work a few kinks out, but I haven t experienced any issues.

Athene s financial strength is quite impressive. They have about $90 billion in managed assets and ZERO debt. They also just made an agreement with Voya to reinsure them in the amount of $19 Billion according to Nasdaq. They are the new kid on the block, but the numbers just don t lie!!! I believe very strongly in this company and will continue to help protect my clients retirements with their products.

No one answers their phones. THEY stopped collecting their money (via auto WD) and then tried to catch up in agreed-upon lump sums (again via auto WD) and they cannot even get that right. At this point, no one can give me an accurate accounting! Beyond frustrated!

Terrible customer service! Don't put your money with this company. My 82 year old mother has an annuity with Athene. They have treated her so poorly and have made it so incredibly difficult for her to get her money out. It is sad. She suffers with high blood pressure and gets on the phone with these people and she gets so upset that it scares me. I have spoken with them myself to correct our address that erroneously keyed in and they wouldn't even listen. They sounded like robots on the other end. "I am sorry I cannot help you". I asked to speak to a manager and they said that one wasn't available. The sick thing is that if you take your money out because of their terrible customer service you have to pay a horrendous penalty. This should be illegal! Please have a manager from your company call me. This is elder abuse!

Absolutely terrible service. Avoid at all costs if you can.

Just like most other folks. I feel like my policy has been hijacked by Aliance One ~ that Athene outsourced their business to. The people at the top had poor vision in the handling of this transfer. I can't believe I am still trying to get a quarterly statement from them, and it is now October. Horrible customer service and communication.

Bad experience, took almost 3 months to cash out annuity. Here are the facts: They do everything by snail mail. Send in packet, theirs a minor problem with it, they snail mail a letter back instead of calling or emailing. Letter never showed, luckily I called. Everything submitted and approved last week of April, was told the May checks went out and mine would go out June 1! Why did you require I put an account number for it to be transferred to? And checks are only printed once a month. Bottom line, your money is there money and they do anything not to give it up. So glad my money is out of there hands!!

No one there can tell me why, how long it will take, or even where it is. Anyone out there have an idea what a good next step is? I will report to my State's Insurance Commissioner. I submitted a request to withdraw funds from my account and after 25 days and three followup telephone calls I still know nothing at all about my request. Customer service states they work for Alliance One who does all of Athene's processing. Each time I asked for a supervisor I was told one would call me within 48 hours, but no one ever called. Today, I was told by Representative Sarah that she would transfer my call to the "Escalation Team." After being on hold for 4 minutes I got a recorded message that no one is available to take my call and then my call was disconnected. Today is now March 8, 2016 and my next step seems best to consult an attorney.

As I read some of the more critical reviews, I have to wonder what the entire set of circumstances were in those cases. Possibly poor appilication information causing delays, underwriting cases that have difficulty passing reasonable compliance standards, etc... I have never had any of these problems in any material way. I have written business with this company for some time and am an objective agent.

I am still waiting to be reimbursed for this last screw up. Not to mention the years of mistakes and terrible customer service. The only reason I gave one star is because I had to in order to post.

Athene has the WORST customer service I've ever seen. I requested a check from my annuity on Jan 1 2017, I mailed in a deposit slip for my bank so the check can be mailed there, as I was not going to be at home when it arrived. On 1/17/17 I called to see why the check wasn't in my bank yet. They said oh we're sorry but the check hasn't been cut --we forgot. We'll mail it in 1-2 business days. I said be sure to mail it to the bank as requested, they said ok. Now on 1/25/2017 it's not in my bank. They said they mailed it to my home in Florida. That is not what I had requested. Now I'll have to wait for the check to be forwarded to me in Indiana and then I'll have to mail it back to FL because there is no BOA here. They said they could stop payment and mail a new check in 3-5 business days to my bank. This is absolute garbage. This is my money I'm asking for. They did absolutely NOTHING TO HELP ME! ATHENE is GARBAGE! Don't do business with them. It was a mistake I regret deeply.

Made a call to Athene this morning...here's my story. First person I spoke too was very friendly and helpful but the call disconnected before we could address the reason for my call. The second person (Tammy) was friendly but seemed to not understand my request for a (2015) 1099 possibly due to a bad connection. The third person (Amos) was short, disconnected, and not at all friendly! He informed me he would forward the request to another dept. Not feeling confident in this call I placed another call and connected with Daniel who speaks with a foreign accent. Daniel transfered me to an outside directory assistance 411 line! I called again and spoke to Iesha. Folks, Iesha (probably spelled wrong) is a jewel! This young woman was helpful, friendly, considerate, informative and above all, she redeemed my uneasy feelings that Athene is no longer customer friendly or trustworthy. I might have started out with 5 stars but with every call I lost one. I give Iesha 5 stars and Athene 2 stars. Iesha turned things around (thus the 2 stars) and with a little luck, the next call will start climbing again, however, I reserve that thought until I see if I receive my 1099 within a reasonable amount of time. I have never know such incompetence, in what are supposedly professionals, dealing with large sums of money!!! They could not care less about their mess ups and like to pass people around when dealing with a complaint. I am amazed that when money is owed to a client, that it takes an age for anyone to write a check and post it ( maybe they need help from an adult with the spelling?!) Stay away from these people. Zero stars if that were an option.

We have had an annuity with Athene for seven years, withdrawals always seem to be a problem with them. Its like it is coming out of their own pockets. This time however has really put me over the top. Every person
you talk to tells you a different story. Last Friday they were going to overnight a check, on Monday I called and the customer service person said that the last person did not handle it right. She however said she could take care of it no problem. Guess what, she make a mistake and did not get it overnighted, now the supervisor says they will do their best to get the money out on Friday. Worst customer service ever. had to give one star to post review, they sure don't deserve it

THE WORST COMPANY EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have not paid out the whole life insurance for my grandmother and she passed 5 months ago! How?! I am starting to think corruption is involved and they don't have the money to pay it out. This has put the financial burden on the family. They give me different information every time I call and have even been told me before by the MANAGER sorry I apologize I didn t fully read the claim and gave you the wrong information.
They are not ethical, no one can answer a simple question, incompetency is the norm and it seems like their process is to irritate you enough so that you don't keep calling back. Even when my grandmother was alive, you can only mail in a check as if we are not in 2019. Do yourself the favor and choose a reputable company. Unfortunately, my grandmother had been with them for 20 years before she passed, and I am just learning about how corrupt they are.

Athene has the BEST terms on annuities on interest rates... They went through a PHASE where SO MUCH MONEY WAS COMING IN DUE TO GREAT PRODUCTS that they had to hire people to expand and service suffered. THEY NOW HAVE OVER 1,300 AMERICAN JOBS!!!

Extremely poor customer service. Not a Trustworthy company.
I am concerned something criminal is taking place within Athene.
It seems they don't actually have the money on have they claim to.

A client of ours has been attempting to move her account from Athene to a reputable company since early January. They have made up every excuse in the book to hold onto her money and not release it. Every single excuse they made up has been addressed. They said they had everything in April but never transferred the money. They again claimed that they were ready to transfer funds in September and still has not been transferred.

Their Annuity products look great on paper, but don't expect to ever see your money again if you put it into Athene.

Unfortunately, you can not add to (deposit) online line. Must send a paper check. This is very inefficient for 2019! If it wasn't so much work to move my money, I would do so sooner, working on it.

Have not taken payments out of my account for 11 m...

Have not taken payments out of my account for 11 months now. I get the total stall and runaround. I think they may be going belly up with my premiums gone for good. I filed a claim with the insurance commissioner.
