Really enjoyed my time here! Went alone and got to spend plenty of time reading everything..the Hidden World Inside You exhibit was incredible, I want to try and go again because I ran out of time and didn't get to enjoy the entire thing. The only downside to this place was the Dark Matter show; we waited 25 minutes past the start time to be allowed in the theatre and everyone was cramped together and standing with kids in the dark..not ideal, however the show was amazing.

Extremely large museum but still clear and easy to find the different exhibitions. Everything in the museum was very well organized and nothing seems to have been left to chance. It takes time to go through the museum, but it is well worth a visit if you're nearby.
It is time to take this adventure! Attention everyone! A treasure and masterpiece of cultural dynamics. This museum is a must see for everyone globally. I have had the opportunity to come here twice in my life, once as a youngster when I was in grammar school and the other as an adult. It was just last year. My son and I had an incredible time. I recommend the American museum of natural history to just about everyone in the world. Amazingly enough, it's breathtaking. It's educational. It's cultural. It's useful. It's mind blowing. It's good for everyone in the family. We learn about the origins of life and what existed possibly millions of years ago. It's a great time table of existence. The museum is rich in information that spans the globe. From birds to dinosaurs, from ancient civilizations to current day, from artifacts to clothing, from culture to revolution, fro m oceans to space, this museum takes you on an exploration in time of land, sea and space like we cannot even dream about. It is worth every step, dollar, thought and fascination that the human being can fathom. It takes the whole day and yes there is good food too. Go on a guided tour if you can. This is essential to a great learning process for young people. Go and enrich your life soon. Your life will be changed for sure. Visit soon! It's a beautiful day for the museum!!! Do not miss this. Try it.
I'm glad I went but I didn't enjoy this museum as much as other ones I've been to. The entry-room was PACKED at noon on Saturday and there were lines everywhere. There was very little signage directing which line you should be in, so we randomly picked a line to wait 20 min in. I'm not a huge fan of the "suggested entry price" model of business as they almost make you feel guilty if you want to be cheap. Also, you have to pay extra to see the "special exhibits". This museum has aged poorly I think. The exhibits often have small placards with tiny text, so only people up close can read the information. Perhaps this would suffice for a less crowded museum, but for one of the most popular attractions in NYC you'd think they could increase the font size so more than 3 people can read at a time. This was also an issue with several small "theater rooms", where there is literally 2 benches in front of a screen. This museum has thousands of visitors and there are only 2 benches for people to sit and watch the exhibit screen? Really? We encountered several "choke point" intersections, where mass amounts of people were trying to cross a hallway or make it through a door and you had to push people to get where you wanted to go.
Poor experience. We came to visit on Monday and it was overloaded. Spent an hour in line to cash our Groupons. Staff is either not nice or not available. Dirty washrooms. The food at the food court is overpriced (small hamburger $7.50) and it s full most of the time. Wasn t impressed by the exhibits neither. Not for the price that you pay. Unfortunately, far from the Canadian ROM. Waste of time and money.
We just took our 2.5 year old son to the museum and he loved it! It is so much more accessible then the zoo - and it's warm! the animals are all right next to each other and easy for a child to see (without having to hold them up!). Also it's donation based, so you can give whatever you want to get it.
This was, to me, a little bit disappointing. It was super dark inside, in the first room. The map was incorrect. A lot of the rooms were super big, but did not have that much too see.
I can t give this place enough stars. The building itself is with seeing and gorgeous. The exhibits are varied and fantastic. I spent well over an hour on a single floor. Give yourself lots of time!
Such a great museum! Not only do they have incredible exhibits and Imax Movies (SO worth checking out!!) but they also have some great events throughout the year; I went to a 'science in review' held by Neil DeGrasse Tyson; just incredible. Huge fan of this place!
I always have a good time when I go here and I always learn something new - although I don't remember . There are all sorts of exhibits and sections from dinosaur to geology to how the earth was made. They have revolving exhibits too. Then there's the presentation about the galaxy at the Hayden planetarium. Whether you wanna take your kid(s) there or head out on a nerdier type of date AMNH is a great choice
Let s start with the map. The map makes absolutely no sense. You are pretty much guessing where you are at all times. The exhibit areas are hot. It s like walking through Times Square. People are coming from every direction just as lost as you are. The exhibits are nice but the stress to just get around is not worth it.
Loved going there. It was still having work done when i was there. Want to take my son there. I think he'd like the train ride too. I did. Id be confused switching subway connections
Thumps up for guide Robert, which is usually at the main hall, greeting you next to the American fauna room. The human factor can never be undersestimated in a Museum.
5 stars for the awesome exhibitions in this world class museum deservedly viewed as one of the best in the world. Dinosaur exhibit and planetarium show are amazing. Study the map to find your way around. Needs a lot more signs showing how to figure out where you are going. One and a half stars for the lower food court which is overpriced....$5.00 slice of pizza, $12.36 per lb. for OK salad bar and tasteless, lukewarm to cold, overcooked food that anyone who appreciates a good meal in NYC will be disappointed in.
Here is not only interesting. All objects and historical pieces are pure objects of art. So smooth they are. Many of them like candies, they are so goodlooking you want to taste them. There too many interesting things for one visit. Better to be prepared. Before visiting I revomend to read website and wikipedia, to choose the most interesting exactly for you.

One of the best natural history museums in America and huge, but with rough edges.
Whether you're interested in animals, rocks, anthropology, history, dinosaurs, or culture the AMNH offers something for everyone in great quantities. Suggested admission is $22 as of 2017 but you can donate less for general admission.
The AMNH's top attractions are its dinosaurs, hominids, and animal diorama collections. There are world famous and historical famous fossils on display starting with Lucy, the australopithecus. The vast collection of the animal dioramas span many years of diorama techniques and presentation / art style. The meteoroid collection is pretty significant, too.
Where AMNH falls short is some of its human history exhibits. The African collection has not been updated in decades and is full of colonial haught and generalizations, often using "Africa" to describe every culture in the whole continent as one and using declarative, present-tense language even though the expeditions detailed in the exhibits are limited to small parts of Africa. They may be keeping it un-updated as historical examples of imperialist interpretations, but that's a bit subtle without any hints of self-criticism. The broken lights and unkept paint in much of the human history sections show that they just don't care, though, compared to the animal exhibits that have been revised and kept well. The culture and art collections are interesting, however, with a significant collection of central and south American artifacts.
The AMNH offers much to see, but it loses out to Carnegie Museum of Natural History in presentation quality for individual exhibit and as a whole. Most rooms have no curated paths that offer the best perspective and narrative, and you'd have to back-track many times to see all the exhibits. It doesn't match the spirit of public good and humanism of the National Museum of Natural History (the Smithsonian). However it's still a must-see and offers many artifacts that aren't available anywhere else.
Lives up to expectations!! It was an awesome journey. The exhibits really reflect every culture. I loved the Latin American section. Would definetly come back
I just attended a talk by Scott Kelly. Great stuff! I have also been here for a planetarium show (and we set up telescopes on the terrace, for attendee viewing, for at least another planetarium show), which was amazing -- I actually got vertigo from how fast the 'sky' moved, since I am used to the Earth's normal speed, through a telescope). My club, the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, also has monthly lectures here. I also come here to get my fix on dinosaurs, meteroids, animal and peoole history, etc.
Beautiful museum that lives up to its name. Very organized and filled with history. You do not have to pay the full admission, just a donation that you feel is appropriate to give. I paid $10 which I felt was fair. Several places to eat within the museum in the case you get hungry.
First let me say I read the other reviews in this museum before going and have determined you all delusional or dramatically deprived of what a great experience at a museum should be. The museum is over-priced and my family and I were extremely disappointed. We paid $98 To walk through little rooms with exhibits that were so simple a 4 year old could have designed them. The Mummy exhibit which I paid extra to see was also disappointing. Information was repeated to give the exhibit a larger feeling and was also incorrect which was noticed by several other patrons as well. If you can save your money and enjoy the free things available in Manhattan like Central Park. Take the Staten Island Ferry which is also free and see the Statue of Liberty. Avoid the American Museum of Natural History at all cost. It is a compete waste of time.
One of my favorite museums in New York.A great location on the west side of the central park with an great view over the central park, astonishing items and culture to see and to learn about and a good Imax show. Even if you are not a museum nerd I would nonetheless highly recommend a visit here.
Very up and down. Some things were great but they were over shadowed by others. The place wasn't very well sign posted, it was difficult to get round and the map wasn't very helpful. There was also a temporary t rex exhibit which when we got to it we couldn't go in as you needed separate tickets but there were no signs to indicate this and the lady on the desk was horribly rude and unhelpful. Disappointing experience.
The most incredible museum I have ever seen. I spent a day to see it all and even wasn't enough. The best Natural History Museum on the earth? I've been in the London one which is very good and in Madrid but I think there are not as good.
Travelled all the way from Australia to visit this iconic Museum. Enjoyed every minute I spent there, plenty to see and do once inside this magnificent building. Well worth the trip for anyone who happens to find themself with a free day whilst in New York.
World-class collection with great planetarium and IMAX shows. Extensive exhibits on dinosaurs, cultures of the world, gems, and biodiversity among other things. At 1,600,000 square feet this is one of the largest natural history museums in the world so every time you come back here you'll see something new. However, some of the info is outdated. For example the map for the range of the puma in the hall of North American mammals does not take into account the Florida panther. Tip: this Museum does not charge for admission. Instead it asks for a suggested donation of $19. This is not mandatory and you could give away as little as 1 penny if need be.
Must-visit if you are in NYC, especially with kids. Huge space and variety, interesting exhibitions. Too bad we were very limited on time during our visit, as the whole museum would probably take ~4 hours to explore properly.
It was the most fascinating and huge museum. The guy who sold us tickets in the front desk is friendly. I didn't explore most of the museum because its huge. Probably the biggest museum of natural history in America. The admission was expensive but it's New York so its reasonable for tickets to be expensive. The food selection was good at their cafeteria.
All of the NYC museums are wonderful. While this particular stop could use a refresh, it is incredible to see so many excited children learning about things that otherwise are considered boring. The planetarium is a great opportunity to rest while partaking in the museum. It s definitely worth the extra. Don t park at the museum - take public transportation.
Went today to see the new T.rex exhibit. It s Friday and it was raining so the place was pretty crowded. T.rex exhibit was fun especially for the kids. They really liked getting up close and personal with T.rex. Live video is available on my Facebook page.
Large museum with a wide variety of sections to explore. Exhibits aren't as impressive as the Natural History museum in Chicago but this one is still great.
Must have seen places of New York. Museum is very big to see everything in one day, so better to prioritize what you want to see much. Dinasour fossils are very impressive...
A must stop in NYC. I thoroughly enjoyed the space science exhibits. Be prepared to spend several hours to complete all departments. There is a cafe downstairs.
Mixed feelings here. Probably nice as a frequent visitor, but for a one time visit, not that great. The level is pitched weirdly: as a scientist, a lot of the displays appeal to me, but the level seems at times high. Also, I do not understand why some human elements are thrown in there, that's not NH (or yes, it is, but the late 19th century version). Planetarium is impressive, but once again, the pitch is a little high. A lot of the rooms are dark, a lot of exhibits are underlit.. Compared, for instance, with the Vienna MNH, this is a little disappointing.
Great museum! You will definitely need an entire morning or afternoon to see the exhibits. Entry is basically whatever you want to pay (if you didn't want some of the select 4 additional shows/experiences). They have a suggested price, but you can choose what to pay for general adult admission. One complaint is that there were a number (more than 5) exhibits that closed early that day so we were unable to see them.
The staff at the museum are rude. I have a 5 year old daughter with cancer that uses a stroller as a wheelchair. They refused me allow me to use her stroller and told me to transfer her to a wheel chair. From enter the museum to looking through it staff was all over just rude!
A perfect slice of history.... the 1950's to be precise. I can't imagine this place has changed much in the last sixty years, the stuffed animals and lifeless backdrops are very much of their time and really need some modernisation. What this place really has going for it is the sheer size and grandeur of this lovely old building it really is a wonder to behold.
First rate museum and a must visit for an interesting day out. I've been to many museums around the world and this is still one of my favourite for the variety and approachability.
I really liked this museum a lot more when I was a kid, but returning as an adult, I saw that many of the artifacts on display are actually replicas, which is not what I d expect from a museum of this stature. When I visited, the gems & minerals exhibit was being reformed, unfortunately, and may be closed for multiple years. Also many of the older exhibit cases were poorly lit and many of the stuffed animals looked like they could use a dusting. It s still worth bringing the little ones to spark their curiosity.
Amazing collections of specimens from all over the world. Amazing for adults and for kiddos, my almost 3 year old loved all of the animal dioramas, and my 2 7 year olds were so impressed with the dinosaurs and hayden planetarium. Great trip even if you think you or your kids will be bored with a natural history museum. Its absolutely massive, but they have a great app called explorer that will guide you to exactly what you want to see.
It's a really cool museum once you're in, but be prepared to wait in line to get in. The donation to get in is suggested, but they make you stand in a slow moving line because they can't be bothered to staff it to meet demand to give it to them. Once inside, it's pretty cool - be sure to check out the planetarium! Newly renovated!
I have been here 2 times and my family loves this museum. My daughter loves sea animal section, there is a giant whale in this section and kids love it. You can see many different kinds of thing here it is a very nice museum!!
Shout out to DAVID! Who made the effort to capture such a wonderful family outing so fun! He was really humble and professional. You can tell how much he loves his job. He takes his photography really serious but he's also fun in the process . He was extremely helpful!
The Hayden Planetarium show is amazing and eye-opening! Beyond that I was impressed with the Central, South, and North America people and culture exhibits. Fascinating stories, sculptures, and peoples. The museum is suitable to and exciting for all age and interest groups.
Being here in New York City for so long and not going to this American Museum of Natural History was sort of a mistake. It s the largest in nation and includes 4 floors of different exhibits by region. The museum layout can be a little overwhelming but there are guides near every entrance to different exhibits and were quite helpful, don t know if this is just a summer program but they have guides that also let you hold bones of some of the different creatures in the exhibits. If you have kids, this is an ideal place to go on a day trip with them because there were so many of them present with at least 5 or 6 different school/tour groups that are in blobs running all over the place, so if you are looking for a peaceful and quiet time you will probably not get that. Overall I was happy to finally visit the museum where at night it (May or May not) come to life (like in the movie)
Went there with my wife and 10 year old son last week. Really nice museum. My wife really liked the butterfly conservatory. So many colors and patterns! And if you stand real still they might land on you. The Hayden sphere, and the exhibit about the scale of universe from the largest to the atomic was my favorite. Our son was fond of the volcano movie. All around, a must see for family's visiting New York!
