Poor signage everywhere inside, dimly lit and hard to read a map anywhere, even in hallways. No wayfinding signs.
Exhibits themselves are sensational. The space, science, earth and T-Rex exhibits were amazing. Excellent for kids (if you don't loose them in the dark or get lost).
Perhaps the maps could be updated and or put static maps in open areas with where and how far to next exhibit.
This museum is a shell of what it was. Crowd control and signage is a disaster. Exhibits can be summed as dead things in boxes.
Exception is the planetarium and Earth science wing. Those are pretty good.
Overall there are much better natural history museums. The layout here is awful with numerous choke points, amplified by bad signage and staff that see visitors as something in their way. The exhibits are literally lifeless and lacking any modernization.
This sort of approach where you just put things in boxes without much theme beyond same location or same time period is old school without the cool.
Overall it's a tourist trap and there are better places to spend your time.
Wonderful museum. Well maintained. Great service. Watched a 3D documentary in their movie hall, which was amazing. They have cafe, giftshops, clean restrooms, access to Subway.
I absolutely love this place. Anytime I'm in New York I always end up here at some point! If you're in NCY, get here and check out all the amazing exhibitions!
You need at least 6 hours in this place to see the whole thing without adding other paid items. But it is wonderful!
One of my favorite places in NYC. Calming, educational and really interesting. Highly recommended.
Feel like a kid again as you re dwarfed by the T-Rex and the Blue Whale or just surrounded magically by butterflies. It s entertaining and educational. Use the side entrance to cut the line.
You can discover precolonial history of American continent.
Awesome museum!!! Best to set aside a whole day to do it in, and even then you won't be able to see everything!
After paying 23 dolars for the entrance, the staff at the cafeteria (level1) denied to heat up the food for my baby, they said i had to buy hot water just for that. Where is humanity nowadays? That's the care we want to give to our new generations? This small thing ruined the whole experience here. Not recommended for families.
What an amazing museum. I could spend eternity wandering this place and still find new and amazing things to learn and discover. Well curated and well designed. He artifacts are incredible and there is plenty of space to sit and enjoy the space without feeling rushed. Also tons of interactive elements
More information than you'll ever be able to absorb.
Highly recommend coming here while in New York! They have great exhibits and also special exhibits that always change. It's a massive building so make sure you bring a lot of time with you. Prices are reasonable. Very friendly staff that will always help you. I would recommend not going on the weekend or on holidays or afternoon/ evenings as it is extremely crowded and loud making it hard to concentrate and enjoy everything. Besides that we had a wonderful time!
There is always plenty of history to learn about each time I make a visit here. There are always plenty of exhibits of various topics pertaining to American history. It s a great place to bring your kids. There is a cafeteria and a gift shop which are all a little pricey. A great place for a day trip.
Such a great experience. Worth the visit if you re looking to kill an hour or two browsing, or longer to see the added exhibits.
Amazing place, loved all the skeletons on display and more , some peole complain about the high prices at the cafeteria but they forgot they paid whatever they wanted to give LITERALLY so ....
Every time i saw a movie I imagine the museum like what i have seen there! I am not a fan for these stuff but every thing is just amazing! You must try to see the documentary movies, clean facilities and friendly staff, if you are student you can ask for discount
Some of the exhibits are very impressive. Others are a little dated. The museum can be difficult to navigate and you have to go through some exhibits to get to others. You cannot buy a bottle of water, which was odd. I understand limiting plastic waste but why sell bottles of soda then? Cafe is overpriced and has terrible service. Cafe staff was rude, didn't give me what I ordered, and yelled at other customers.
Paid a dollar to get in. Was worth the price. I recommend to start from the top floor and see dinosaurs first...Allow the whole day if you want to see all exhibits. The lower the floor the more boring it gets. After the museum go sit down at the central park and relax. Try to avoid going on weekends because of crowds and children.
One thing you need to take notice of is the admission price is recommended you can walk into the museum for free this makes for a great New York experience on the cheap
Despite not being able to see the whole museum, the experience was wonderful!
This is a great museum, there's lots of interesting things to see and learn for kids and adults. If you purchase your tickets online you will not have to wait in the entrance, however you may pay more since they charge their suggested cost for a ticket. We waited and purchased our tickets at the entrance and they only charged us for the amount we wanted to donate.
I actually wouldn't recommend this for tourists at all, it simply disappoints compared to similar museums all around the world.
It's hugely busy, staff are mostly rude, and the whole place is very tired.
We paid full price to avoid the huge queues, and were left disappointed. The butterflies were incredible, but at an extra cost for a small exhibit, that didn't soften the blow at all.
There's plenty of better museum and gallery experiences in NYC, and better natural history museums around the world.
Spent the day here enjoying the entire place. I reckon you should do the same!
A past time of beauty - time has past this museum by. Many areas are run down, incredibly dusty and dirty- overrun with people - and have little exciting and modern. While I understand the intrigue of this museum what you have here is a relic that would be better explained as a museum about museums past. The rest of the world has learned how to make museums interactive, exciting, and infused with modern knowledge making the entrance fee worth it - unfortunately that is not the case here.
Had a great time here. Loads to look at and the planetarium was fantastic!
Among the best museums in the country, visiting the American Museum of Natural History is always fun and inspirational. They have great events and you may be lucky enough to cross paths with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Last year they had an event for the transit of venus and he spoke briefly, which was awesome! The displays are very well done and they reach people at a variety of levels of understanding.
This is one of the best places to visit in New York. A lot of information, animals, dinosaurs, rocks, stars, the universe, the moon, stones. Everything you think that you should find in a Natural Museum you will find there. But be prepared, This is far to be a "one-day-visit". You can't see everything in only one day.
Surprised at all the negative reviews here. Yes, the admission might be pricey, but it's actually much cheaper than what it usually is during the day. What's more, you actually get to experience the entire Academy in a more intimate manner than you would during the day, so it's a perfect venue for date night.
Very good dinosaur collection, huge museum go there but don't expect customer service
I saw this museum in movies let me just say this was absolute hell. From the food cafeteria to the upper floors filled to the brim in a vortex of out of control kids this museum haunts me to this day.
Let me first start more specifically with the food court. The food I ate was awful and extremely overpriced. My family spent 50 bucks on food that completely sucked. Again like the whole museum kids were running around like this was My school hallway after my chapter 10 math test:
The first floor exhibits were antiquated and were not interesting add the kids dropping a billion pounds of Doritos and viewing a few exhibits have become one of the most challenging things I have had to do.
Generally I can t find anything to compare this awful Museum too except maybe the most recent James Bond movie.
The place is amazing, wish I could see all of it in one day. The planetarium is well worth it too!
Baby Henry found it really good fun! Got to see a few of the things that are in the film "Night at the museum", notably Dum Dum, Theodore Roosevelt, Dexter and Rex! There is a lot to see and do there. However there are different sections that you need to pay to access which is a bit of a let down. Though entry is free it does not feel like it as you line up to pay for your ticket as you come in. Would recommend :)
The whale and t-rex are awesome. Sleepovers are supposedly great too.
Great to visit especially during COVID. Safety was paramount and we saw the T-rex exhibit
I loved it! Definitely worth checking out if you're into that sort of thing. Might take a few trips to see everything.
Be a part of the History! Visit this museum. You would defenetely love it.
Amazing! One of the best Museums ever. I dont think I even say everything. Will be back.
Its was great love it but the map is not the best map of the place but i still liked it.
Always an adventure but it does get extremely busy during the holidays and most school vacations, so if you don't like crowds then stay away during these times. There is no way to see the whole museum in one visit unless you have a few specific exhibits that you want to see. I have been here numerous times since I was a child and still delight in all that they have to see. Be prepared with your own food or eat before hand because food prices are not reasonable.
I'd definitely recommend to visit the museum. It is very well maintained and there are a lot of things to see. Teaching volunteers are really kind and helpful. It's one of the best things you can do in New York city.
World class history museum. From period placed dioramas to flora and fauna exhibits, it is a wonderful place for families to visit and learn. The dinosaur exhibitions would be hard to beat anywhere with a vast array of specimens. For kids, there is a Night at the Museum booklet for them to go find some of the references in the movies. They strategically placed the Easter Island "dum dum" head in the far reaches to ensure you walk through many areas. Brilliant as there are many things to see along the way. The blue whale is a sight to see as well as the planetarium. Plan to spend a few hours marveling at everything there is to see - not the least of which is the amazing architecture. It is completely worth the suggestion admission!
It was really crowded although most of the exhibitions were cool
I love this place!! Best museum ever! You will have fun if you are 5 or 35! Every exhibit is very realistic from little details to hearing animal noises. Theres so much to see and takes up the whole day. The movie night at the museum doesn't do this place justice!
A really big museum with quality. I didnt get it crowdy wich was very good. Recommend it
Absolutely brilliant. Just hope us humans don't make a museum the only place to see such wonderful animals.
Adult experience, we enjoyed our day. Saturday March 17, 2018. Best deal is the all in for $33 each and you can visit all the special exhibitions, plus giant screen and space show. When you arrive if you don t have your tickets go to the left to the kiosk. Your bags will be checked, we did get in with a water bottle and they have fill up stations along the way. For $2 each you can check your coat, very nice that we did not have to carry those around. On the lower level they have a food court, $6 for a piece of pizza, but if you are hungry it works. You can go in and out with your ticket, so you could hit the outside vendors for lunch. Take your time and spend the day. If you don t get your showtimes entered and have unlimited pass for the day, go to customer service and they can add those on for you. For example we forgot to enter the space show. They did it for us without effort. Great customer service and very attentive.
I felt a bit closed in, due to the crowds. Very nice staff.
i love this museum, its so much fun for All and educational. i have spent the whole day here.
Me and my family had a good time I just wish there was more people on the floor tell you what it go the maps were helpful but yet you still got lost but other than that it was a great thing
I loved the rocks!!! The most amazing piece of Labradorite I have ever seen was found here! I spent hours in with the rocks, that alone was a whole adventure. There is a lot to see, you should either go early and spend the day or split it up on several days. Amazing!!!
Awesome museum. 1 day visit isn't enough unless you have all day to spend there.
Honestly, I have expected much more from this museum, based on so many good feedback. Even though I like museums, me and my friend found this museum quite old-fashioned and to be honest - boring. Exhibits are non-interactive, and presented in quite a random order. Many installations looks like they were made in 70s and not been updated since. The most fun part was the area, dedicated to dinosaurs, but it was on the top floor, and by the time we have reached it, we were absolutely exhausted. Not to mention that the museum was as crowded as the busiest metro station (our visit happened on Sunday afternoon). All in all I do not think that the ticket price is worth the visit, but I can understand that it is quite height to regulate the number of visitor.
With the Guggenheim and the Met so close you might wonder why bother with a museum on "natural history?" Don't question it. Just go. They have plenty of cool things to see and the space center frequently hosts cool events.
Very cool exhibits, just run quite poorly. Employees clearly don't care and let too many people into each exhibit. For example I went into the butterfly exhibition with my lady friend and there were so many people in there we were squished like sardines. They also let people stampede into the planetarium rather then organize it in any way. Overall it's worth going if you haven't been but try and go during an off time like early during the week
definitely a place to go if your first trip to new york. great exhibits and helpful staff. bring the kids, they will marvel at all the life sized displays.
Extraordinary place to learn about Earth, human history and bio-diversity. time spent in this museum gives insight into history of earth, evolution of man, changes in the environment, prehistoric man. it may be world's number one in collection regarding human origins, biodiversity. it enlightens visitors on evolution of man. watching of the short films on cosmic world and volcanos is must. Butterfly conservatory makes you feel the absolute importance harmony with nature.
I am a HUGE nerd, so it hurts my heart that after YEARS of not being able to visit this museum during my many previous trips to NYC when I finally got the chance, it was a HUGE disappointment!
"Night at the Museum" aside, I just don't understand why this place would be open during a "private event" that prevented any visitor from experiencing the entire museum while also charging full admission? I felt so cheated!
I had specifically come to see the dinos, the blue whale, and the planetarium, but also all the other cool exhibits this museum is supposed to boast. Well my smile immediately turned into a frown when I approached the ticket counter to find a sign that had a long list of exhibits that were closed that day...including the hall where the blue whale hangs! I almost turned around and left, but seeing as it was my last day in NYC, I figure there would still be plenty to enjoy. So I paid the $23 gen admission + the additional $5 for the Planetarium show (though later several people told me it was a "pay what you want" at the ticket counter, but I was not given this option, I was just straight up told it was $28...so felt very scammed by this "world renowned museum" on multiple levels).
I was sorely mistaken! The Rose Center for Earth and Space portion was interactive and cool, but the Hayden Planetarium left something to be desired. I saw the "Dark Universe" show and loved the content, but I was sitting in the back portion of the planetarium and parts of the show were distorted or just cutoff from view completely...I have never been to a planetarium show where this was the case...again, felt very let down by the experience.
Because there were several halls and exhibits closed due to the private event being held during operating hours (why it couldn't be held after the museum closes at 5pm is beyond my comprehension) or for "restoration" and "improvements", what should have been a 3-4hr immersive experience was over in about half that time as there was not really much else to see.
Shame on AMNH for not only charging full price when it felt like half of the museum was closed and also for closing off a part for a private event that should have been open to paying patrons. I have never been so disappointed and let down by a museum experience in my life, especially one that I have been looking forward to for so long!
And to add insult to injury, the entrance in the actual subway station was closed off as well. You could exit from it, but had to walk out of the subway and all the way to the front entrance to get in. Again, why??
The only reason it was not a 1-star rating is at least they had a functional mobile app that did an excellent job guiding me through the museum to see the exhibits as the place is a bit of a labyrinth. Though it would have been helpful if they had a way to update it w/all the closings for the day since I had chosen several things to see, but couldn't get there by the route suggested in the app because connecting walkways through other exhibits were closed off.
Needless to say, I cannot recommend a visit here after my heartbreaking experience. A tiny part of nerdy soul died a little bit after my visit here. Honestly, my time and money would have been better spent revisiting the Met or any number of the other museums in NYC.
Abundance of Knowledge and information
on cultural , Space , big bang ,human from Stone age to today , dinasours, Mammals , Etc.
A day is not enough for interested mind.
Show of EarthFlight and Dark universe is magical and left you with Woow feeling .
Food is on museum court at LL charged on weight of items in your tray.
Kids , Family and friends come ready to walk more than 5mile for visiting all gallery and floor of it .
Staff is supporting .
Great stop in NYC, mostly for families. Be ready to stand in a long cue if you arrive after 10 am on a school holiday. The staff is friendly, the planetarium is great and the gift shop is decently priced
To visit this museum is like entering a portal to a movie. The shear size of the dinosaur at the entrance is daunting and the various exposition halls are exquisitely laid out. I really enjoy the human evolution exhibit which really portraits life as it was lived.
I visited the American Museum of Natural History to see the Dinosaurs among us exhibit. I enjoyed the trip overall, but the reasons I am only giving the museum three stars are the following...
1. Bathrooms. They are extremely hard to find. Nobody seems to know where they are and the signage is terrible. I followed multiple 'restroom' signs only to end up in a random exhibit.
2. Again, signs and maps overall need work. The maps you are given suggest multiple ways of accessing exhibits/galleries but when you attempt a route you often are faced with a wall. Eventually by trial and error you figure out you have to first walk through three other galleries before you can get where you want to go.
3. The day I visited, they were setting up the Theodore Roosevelt main entrance for an event. As well as with other parts of the museum. These areas were randomly shut off from public access without warning. This resulted in the only exit many were aware of, and the only bathroom i could find, becoming suddenly inaccessible. A lot of confused people were wandering around trying to figure show to get out, or where to pee. Water fountains were also very hard to find.
4. The signage for displays could also use work. I found one display where the sign explaining what you were looking at was inside the display case on my left, facing to the right (perpendicular to a person viewing the display). You had to crane your head around and practically squish your face against the glass to read it. Another display described a peculiar costume worn by first nations in North America during ceremonies...but never explained what the costume actually was. Lots of small mistakes were made.
Also, what is the deal with people bringing and using selfie sticks at a museum? When did we all become such huge narcissists?
Overall though, I enjoyed my visit.
Great Museum!!! Really enjoyed It, it has different exhibits, just consider to pay some extra money for some of them.
Great museum really good for kids and all ages enjoy alot inside
One of the greatest museums in the entire world no doubt and probably my favorite museum I've ever visited. If it's your first time here be prepared to be overwhelmed in the best possible way. This museum has 5 levels all packed to the brim with an endless collection of artifacts and exhibits to see. The great part is that if you're not there to see a special exhibition or extra show then admission is pay what you wish. You have to donate something to get in but it can be as little as 50 cents or a dollar and trust me this museum would easily be worth the 25 dollars suggested admission price.
A wonderful experience, the dioramas are stunning. Definitely a must-see.
Interesting exhibits. Very crowded. The museum layout was confusing and difficult to navigate. The staff all clearly hate their jobs, service with a frown. I would have spent more time and money here to see exhibits if not for the frustrating layout and aloof staff.
Very beautiful place. Well arranged and very well mentioned stuff. Must visit.
A must see for anyone interested in science. Astronomy, geology, paleontology, and biology are well represented. Additionally, there are excellent films and special exhibits. Get here early: lines are long at 10am (opening tiime). I got in line at 9:30 am. Also get the explorer app because the museum layout is confusion. The app will help you find exhibits quickly.
If you ve never been to a history museum, then by far this is certainly one you must visit. However, it is very easy to get lost in this museum (whether that s good or bad is up to you). But the museum itself is rather old so exhibits aren t easily connected and aren t too interactive either. Overall, I d say definitely visit if you ve never been, but not something I d prioritize if you only have a short visit. Btw, this museum is PAY WHAT YOU WISH! Don t fall victim to the listed prices or online tickets, go in person to the counter and feel free to pay whatever you want for admission!
Great place to take kids but would not want to be the night security.
I spent a total of 2 hours look just at the dinosaurs. I strongly recommend, if you want to see it all, saving a good chunk of your day to see it. I didn't have enough time in the day to see everything, but over several visits, I can say I've seen most of it
Awesome museum, 4 floors of exhibits, gonna go back !
It was very informative. I liked that they were willing to point out problematic things. I didn't like that they called animals "gifts" to the museum.
I've been to this museum multiple times and I'm always impressed with it. If you're in Manhattan or near it, I would defenently recommend coming here, especially if you have kids. It is a very big museum and has a lot to offer; that being said, it is worth the money to go and see.
Amazing museum, definitely recommend for kids. Piece of Armenian history on the pictures.
Beautiful displays. Lacking more than basic information. Enormous amount of families walking about with strollers and backpacks, school groups and tour groups shouting through megaphones. Almost impossible to read let alone enjoy the museum. This place needs to put limits on how many people can enter the museum at any given time or even consider having certain hours or days where only 21+ can enter. I looked forward to this museum a lot and missed a good half of it due to the sheer amount of people, some who didn t even seem interested in being there, jamming up the exhibits. After visiting the ROM in Toronto, this place was a big letdown.
They have great thing like rock formations, science and lots of history of what our world was like in the past to where we are today, so come on down and learn your history with friends and families plus they have a foodcourt and gifts shops and remember kids love to learn about the past to where we are today.
I went to museum las week, but Ben Stiller wasn t working, and the animals were ecstatic.
It is up to date in exhibiting the latest explanations of archaeological findings. The current displays are not to missed.
I know that giving four stars to a world class museum is a very arrogant thing to do, but I truly believe this museum is due for some updates. The layout is absolutely perplexing. There is relatively no consistent signage, which makes way finding terribly difficult. I know we re not alone, because we walked past dozens of people walking in circles and holding their maps just as confused as we were. There were no docents or helpful staff, only security guards that barked nonsensical orders, like don t hold your toddler on your shoulders when we asked for directions. The artifacts truly are incredible, but the process of finding them proves to be much more work than it needed to be.
From the moment you step into this place every thing seem to come alive. every thing is so well made. my sisters 9, 8 and 6 were so fascinated by this place. If you want to come off the street and visit a different world in the heart of new york this is the place you will have to see. You are more than likely to visit the past the future and over 20 different country and culture in 2 hours. My favorite place to visit is the oceanic exhibitions. you are immediately greeted by a massive sperm back whale that is hanging from the second floor, it is a site to see. i love this place and would visit every chance a get.
Go for opening.it gets crazy a couple hours after opening.went after new years and the staff were saying they had over 20,000 people go through that weekend.
Love this place and one of my favorite Museums.
