You can learn a lot and see a lot of interesting things, but the food court is an absolute disgrace. Incredibly overpriced and subpar quality. You can pick up better food at any corner vendor for a third of the price and be happier. Yes, it is a history museum first. But food matters when you re in a place this big (you could spend the whole weekend here and probably not see everything). So bear that in mind when planning your visit, especially if you re providing for more than just yourself. Many of the exhibits are caked in dust and don t appear to be tended to very frequently. To be frank, a lot of them look seriously outdated and forgotten about. No clear signage or direction on where to find restrooms and navigating the place in general is like finding your way through a labyrinth for the first time. It s nice enough, and you should visit it at least once for the experience of it, but whatever you do don t bother with the food court, and keep your expectations toned.

This is a must see! Beautifully curated, easy to navigate. It had plenty of things I'd never seen before. Of particular interest to me were the halls of biodiversity, ocean life, and Asian peoples.

I would give myself an extra day on the future to do the whole museum.

A few things to be aware of, it's a pretty crowded location even on weekdays. There were a few lights out over some displays, also hardly any trash cans! Only one recycling bin.

Every anticipation has been met. Great museum for young and for old. So many different wonders from various parts of the world. From africa, asia or of course america.
Especially fans from Nights at the Museum get to find various exhibits they can relate to because they saw the movie

The museum was a pure delight. There was multiple exhibits that left a meaningful impact on how I view our history, and the nature around us. The only drawback is that there are several exhibits that cannot hold its own weight comparatively. Which leads to long breaks of not being interesting in the experience.

This is a very nice museum. It has lots of historic things it would take me for day to get through. It had lots of cool bones and exhibits. It also have a giant squid and other cool sea animals. They also had a nice dinosaur exhibit with lots of large bones.

I have been to this museum many times and it has always been a very good experience. However, yesterday Dec.29 was a total disaster. It was a pure money grab by the museum. They let in way, way to many people. It was like being on a subway in the museum! It was loud, hot and was total chaos in the Ocean Room. It was a very disappointing time day at the museum. I would avoid on holiday weekends.

It is a must visit. Before you go, visit the website, plan out your day, so that you can cover all the must-see exhibits. There is a very good food court, so lunch is taken care of! An excellent day trip!

Super cool museum. They have everything from almost every culture on this planet. My favorite exhibits were the dinosaurs bones and the ocean fossils. I couldn't believe my eyes. This place made me feel like a kid all over again!

I always want to like this museum but can never do it, but that's probably because I'm a bit too old to be astonished by what's inside. Many of the displays feel like glorified dioramas. That being said, I definitely would bring a young kid here (although maybe not on a weekend, I just can't handle the rush and crowded atmosphere of these places).

Worst experience ever. They let way too many in for th space, there is zero crowd control. The elevators are packed so if you have someone with limited mobility you wait forever. Very disappointing and the exhibits aren t even worth it. Don t waste your time on this nightmare.

The magnificent work here, the staff and the way this museum is set up is truly beautiful. Wonderful excursion for a family or a solo trip. Much to see and you can enjoy it time and again.

I know I'm getting to be a geezer when I start thinking this would be a nicer experience if it had fewer little kids. The dinosaur (and related) exhibits are amazing (an overused term, but accurate in this case).

Not sure why the food court has come up but just going to talk about then museum itself! Amazing museum and allow for plenty of time to get round it all. Has every exhibit you can think of, the famous whale is the favourite for me, the size is just crazy. People do actually sleep underneath it! We did 2 added experiences too. We did The Mummy which was one of my favourite bits. This consisted of real preserved mummy's, and every artefact you can think of (weren't allowed pictures, sorry!) Also did the "senses" exhibit which was good, but wouldn't do it again. Mummy was definitely better. Seeing as food court came up, this was well layed out and lots of choice.

Simply: One of the best museums of natural history in the world. Plan at least one day for your visit, to see the whole exhibition. Plan even more time, when you like to see the movies in the theaters and the special exhibitions. Top and amazing is the Dinosaurs Exhibition. It's always very crowded. Take a museum map for orientation.
Have a break: There is a food concourse on the lower level and a lunch zone for schools. Or go to "Cafe on 4".

Whether you have a passion for the history of our planet and the life inside it or you simply want to feel amazed, this museum is incredibly perfect! Its different aisles are superb and they leave the best for the last: the dinosaur fossils are one of the most exciting things I have seen in a museum in my life. This is a must with a kid!

One of the nicest Museums to visit ANYWHERE. It s huge and could take a full day to see everything in detail. Each display is a masterpiece in detail showing animals, the background habitat and lighting.

For me the dinosaur skeletons were the most fascinating thing to see. I also enjoyed to learn and see some of the different achient cultures like the affrican or Indian culture. The stuffed animals are pretty cool too. While walking through the museum I constantly thought of the movie night at the museum. A high light of mine was to see and take a photo of dum dum.
I wish there would have been more structure. Maybe a guide would have helped.

I would agree with the other reviewers here - considering what a major museum this is, it feels very worn down and in need of a renovation. I also don't know who came up with the idea of exhibiting the stuffed animals in lighted glass display boxes in an otherwise completely unlit room (huge waste of space) but it's visually awful and makes it near impossible for photos.

It's easy to get lost, and honestly compared to other natural history museums like the Smithsonian it just isn't that great. The staff and reluctant to do their jobs and very slow, usually with only two people to serve a huge line.

The tintanosaurus is huge though, and I very much recommend the free hourly tours they give - our guide was fantastc and pointed out exhibits we otherwise might have ignored, like that sealed off perfect ecosystem glass sphere (which is so cool!)

There's also a ton of kids here at all times, which unfortunately makes things loud, and all of the somewhat cool exhibits like the butterflies are an extra cost (but I think worth it in that case). Worth checking out if you're here with the family, but I far prefer the Met as far as ny museums go.

Had a blast here. I did 3 of the special exhibitions at the time: Cuba, Humback Whales in 3D and Dark Universe. Enjoy every single one like a little kid. The only word I can think of to describe dark universe is awesome. As a Puerto Rican I also enjoy the Cuba exhibition, it not just contained the history (the very contreversial political history) but the natural history also, from living animals to extinct species to plants. A truly learning experience for every member of the family, not just the little ones.

The museum itself is very good. The person who "helped" us was not helpful at all. In fact she had an attitude. The person next to us was advised that they can pay however much they want (since it was an hour before they closed). We asked the person helping us if we can do that too and she got mad and said "I already entered it and you said it was okay." I would've asked for a refund and maybe called for a manager but I'd rather go see the museum than spend the hour remaining trying to get some good customer service. The place had a lot of add ons you have to pay too like the planetarium and imax.

Awesome Experience, Rubbish Ticketing staff

Awesome Experience, Rubbish Ticketing staff

The Natural History Museum is a well maintained and large museum that also contains a unique planetarium area, it is a really interesting attraction to see, however I have never experienced a more disinterested staff member in my life, Obviously this could just be a once off with this staff member but it was enough to knock a star off the review.

But everything else is worth wild, especially with the NYC City PASS

Three times in a row I would still grade a 5 star! Exceptionally well maintained museum, you need a full day to cover the whole level. We loved the Dino level and lucky to see the biggest ever fossils recovered from South America. My favourite is the T Rex dinosaurs.

Good looking museum. However, way too much space is allocated to creepily stuffed animals, the floor plan is a horrible mess, toilets are a rare commodity, the price is steep for what it is, and too little space is allocated to what kids actually want to see (dinosaurs obviously), and a lot of the anthropology section is presented in a way that feels like borderline 1800s colonialism (natives were more than shamans and savages, hell, they invented the concepts american democracy for you ungrateful lot through the iroquois confederacy).

Get a map! We made a mistake of not getting a map and ended up wandering around and crossing over some of the same area. I really like the dinosaur exhibit. This was one of the busier area of the museum. The museum is a really busy place, but we did go on a Saturday. There's so much to see here, that if there's a particular subject you're not interested in, you can skip it and spend time else where. They layout of exhibits is really well done and you can read the information without feeling rushed.

This museum is a great place to visit. If the amnh is in your agenda for the day or week, be prepared to consume the most of the day. Families with little children utilizing strollers or in need of service ramps may need additional information on getting around the different floors, or the same floors for that matter. Other reviews that I glanced at mentioned the crowd, its true. The museum does have a tendency of being populated with excited viewers from all over the U.S. and world . Set aside time for eating. I never utilized the cafes or food courts, so I will leave that to the food connoisseurs to compliment or critique.

This place is amazing. They have everything, and it's beautifully presented and described in detail with a passion for the subject matter. The ONLY thing that held back the 5th star was the over priced food and the wait line to pay for food in the food court. The line wasn't that long, but our food was cold by the time we were able to pay for it and sit down. That system needs a re-think. Also - it's free to go in, but the suggested $25odd is definitely worth it for what is on display. Maybe they should instigate a solid $25 entrance fee and drop the price of the food. Other than that - definitely worth a day... but make sure you have a whole day. It's a MASSIVE place.

Quite big museum with a lot of diverse topics. The tour is not really clearly marked so you should take a plan to make sure not to miss anything. Plan a lot of hours to see everything, around 4-5 hours should be enough but you won't have the time to read everything. Focus your reading on what you're interested in.

Love this place Took my two-year-old here for the first time with my other children and he enjoyed his self greatly. Looking forward to the new exhibits. Best way to get here it is by public transit station, Oh yeah bring your own lunch because the prices in the cafeteria are ridiculous.

Great museum with a lot of dinosaurs! May be busy on weekends, so buy tickets online before you go. The museum offers special IMAX exhibitions. We've seen both Dark Universe and National Parks adventure. Dark Universe is awesome, National Parks Adventure is beautiful but definitely the lesser one.

The New York Citypass offers a discount if you visit multiple sights or musea. Google it.

This place is a wormhole of time. You could spend days here and still not see everything you wanted to. My advice is stick to a few things you're interested in and have a glance at the rest if you're short on time. For me I really enjoyed the dinosaur exhibits.
