A wonderful museum, unfortunately we couldn't see everything as it is so huuuuge (and interesting).

The museum itself was fine, ticketing staff needs to learn what customer service is. The point of getting a citypass was to skip lines. When there are designated area for people holding the pass, there is an expectation that we'll be looked after first. After waiting 5 minutes and being complete ignored, I got fed up and walked to the counter where 2 staff weren't helping anyone but chatting away. I was told to get in line for general admission and for me to "calm down". Great service by America's finest.
Pretty good museum but there is not much to offer IMO for kids under 5
definitely a must see place weather you are a tourist or local! a little crowded but doable.
A must see museum, been going there all my life good for all ages
What an amazing collection. The mineral collection was a big hit. Plan to spend all day here. Pro tip, have lunch from a food truck just outside. Lamb gyro +1
#travelformortals
Absolutely breath taking. I am a HIGHLY educated individual. I take my dog for walks and know how to set my clock. And believe me while I tell you, them DAMES!. Drop low and feel that crop before they hop, it ain't slop. Just line a good soda pop before a good flop.
Great museum. I recommend the Dark Universe exhibit... blew my mind!
To visit! Interesting rates. Much to see, so go early because there is a line of tourists to enter. Do not go for the movie, there are not many similarities. Go there especially if you are looking for an educational activity.
This is one the few places that doesn't require any reviews. It has wide variety of displays ranging from historic mammals, to civilizations, tools, and much more. People can literally spend an entire day here, and it's usually a lot busier place, so try timing it properly.
This museum is positively amazing, it's probably the largest and diverse range of exhibits I have ever seen in one place. It would take literally days to work your way through and see everything on public display. Do not miss this when in NYC. A
s an added bonus when we inevitably got lost inside this mammoth labyrinth of buildings and rooms the staff were extremely friendly in helping us find our way to where we needed to be.
This musrum is rather aged and in need of a overhaul.very few exhibits were even dated. The anthropology section was laughable with models of African pygmies or Indian village people that look like they were created at the turn of the 20th century.Explanations of displays were not academically credible.Compared to the Natural History museum in London this is a poorer cousin. The only entertainig factor was identifying the creatures from Night at the museum.Sadly Ben Stiller was missing.
AWESOMEST DAY EVER!!!! You could spend three days here and still not experience the whole thing. Also, the museum has suggested prices of $22 for entry, but it is by donation, so pay what you want. We knew we were only going to be there for a few hours, so we paid $10 for each of us. Even going for the dinosaur exhibits alone is worth it.
BEST MUSEUM IN THE WORLD A 10 IS NOT WORTH THE GRADE MORE LIKE A 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY HAVE EVERYTHING FROM GEMS TO POLYNESIAN MAPS, MY BRAIN WAS THROBBING WITH INFORMATION ALSO A VERY PRETTY BUILDING, TOOK ME 12 HOURS TO SEE EVERYTHING THROUGHLY
Feels like a 90s museum, needs more attention and investment.
Other than being EXTREMELY crowded, this place feels endless! There's so much to see, and if you're interested in any of it, expect to stay there all day to see everything. We had 2 hours to kill and barely made a dent in the exhibits. Can't wait to go back to see the rest!
CLOSED ON APRIL 29, 2019 AND NEVER INFORMED THE PUBLIC
Amazing place. Everyone who visit NYC should spend some time at this museum. Make sure you have 4+ hours, because its huge!
So much history and the museum is very spacious, one can spend a few hours here easily. Sometimes it can get overwhelming but is a must see if you are a New Yorker or Tourist.
Wonderful museum!!! We didn't notice how quickly 4 hours pass!!
Amazing experience !!
The entry is for free...
Very many displays, very little interaction. Not great for kids.
Very surprised about the high rating of this museum. It is basically just a ton of displays (though gorgeous) and not much else.
Very little engagement most of the time. The dinosaur, forest and ocean wings were an exception fortunately and kind of saved the visit.
Beautiful displays, not much else.
If you love the movie "Night at the museum" and want to see Rexy, you have to visit this place. There is a lot to see . Handpainted backgrounds with good taxidermy , don't miss the T-Rex, Dark sky and Aqua show add ons too. Food is miserable but that's average food all around the place anyways . $20 for buffet which is weighed for some reason! Wide variety of shops trying to sell museum and space items. About $35 entry in 2019.
The place will mesmerise you with the collection. It is informative and highly recommended. The kids will love the idea of spending a day at the museum. My only wish is for it to be slightly more affordable.
I would love to go back again probably next time I'll avoid the hot summer days.
It was a wonderful experience going through the exhibits throughout the AMHS. A one-day visit to the AMHS is possibly not enough, to understand all the exhibits displayed.
This was my second visit with my kids. We got to see everything we missed last time. There is so much to see and so much to learn. Great for the entire family!!!
I love science and natural history museums and have visited many throughout the world. So you could imagine I was super excited to go to this museum but I quickly became disappointed. First and foremost the service was terrible. Staff were rude and getting into the museum was a mess. It took us an hour to buy our tickets because there weren't enough staff. Plus, there was no information provided to waiting patrons on admission options so it took every patron at least 10 minutes to buy a ticket, not to mention they kept letting school groups cut to the front. The museum was overrun with screaming school kids in hordes of 30+ with limited adults. This is not a kid friendly museum, there are very few interactive exhibits and most are very technical and hard to comprehend. Many of the exhibits are out of date and do not provide accurate information. I would not recommend visiting this museum if you are in town for only a few days. However, they do have an amazing collection and it shame it isn't better run and curated. .
One of the best museums experiences you can get. Loved this place since I was a kid.
Huge museum, it would take more than a day to visit it all well. However, a visit is also worth only to retrace the scenes of the film "Night at the museum". The Hall of the Ocean Life is very beautiful, with the giant blue whale suspended on the ceiling.
place was great and had so much fun during the experience, but for the food, its too expensive if you ask me, might as well go here with a full stomach.
I been visiting this place since 2000, One of the best museums of natural history in the world. Staff is super friendly and willing to help any way possible.
The staff at the museum are rude. I have a 5 year old daughter with cancer that uses a stroller as a wheelchair. They refused me allow me to use her stroller and told me to transfer her to a wheel chair. From enter the museum to looking through it staff was all over just rude!
One of my favorite places in the world. My family and I enjoy being members. It's a savings as we visit several times a year and we skip the lines in the member entrances. My kids and I absolutely loved their Night at the Museum event, which we recently attended.
Very good museum with a lot in it from space exploration to the development of the human species. Lots to see so make sure you get in early to make the most of your entry. Queues to get in did appear a bit disorganised, got told to go round to the entrance on the side for the space exhibits to find the staff at the door weren't ready for us. So did have a small wait to get in. Other than that a great experience.
This was my favorite place to visit when i was a child. The T-Rex exhibit is so amazing. It is a must for a child or parent.
If this place were a video game, every exhibit would be another $49.99 DLC that is only 5% of the total game. From the get go, staff were unfriendly and unhelpful, the only the exhibits that are covered by general admission are garbage, and overall this was a huge waste of time. It's shameful when museums become such money-hungry pigs that just the simple wish of "learning something" is barred behind multiple special entrance tickets each costing more than the other one.
Tldr; this is the absolute worst museum I've ever been to, and I want my money and time back.
Wow! Amazing! The price is up to you! Great museum.
Class trip with middle school 318 k Thanks to the teacher's excellent knowledge of the floor plan no time was wasted looking for the exhibits we needed to complete her well constructed and prepared lesson plan. The only problem was the event that blocked one of the exhibits needed to complete the lesson. Fortunately, for these students the teachers quick thinking ability to turn on a dime and extensive knowledge of the museum an alternate hall was found with time to complete the assignment and visit the dinosaurs.
One of the most famous museums in the world. You must visit our if you come to New York, especially if you come with kids. They will live it.
It's looks so alive like it's not history but today
This museum is so great. I took a solo trip here thinking I could see it all in one day. Boy was I wrong! So much to see, so much to learn!
Four floors of history. Dinosaurs, ocean life, Homo sapiens, space, African culture, Native Americans, Mexicans, Caribbean culture, on and on! I enjoy traveling solo because I don't have the pressure of having to keep up with other individuals, I can take as much time as I want reading! So don't just go to the museum just to say "I went to the museum!" Truly indulge yourself in it and read the writings as there's a lot of great things to learn.
One piece of advise.. have a full stomach before you enter. The food court and cafes are closed due to COVID and you CANNOT eat in the halls. I was so tempted to just hide in a dark corner and chow down on some snacks. I was starving lol. Luckily I had some water!
Enjoy!!
The kids love it. You need to walk a lot to find what they show at the Night at the museum movie.
Favorite museum ever, I can go every day. Get your sandvic, eat it on the stairs and go take a walk inside the museum, then go to Central Park if the weather nice and warm
So impressive!
I recommend to use the mobile Apps which is fantastic (easy to find your way with!)
Great, great museum. The dinosaur exhibits were a huge part of my childhood, and as an adult I realize how much other cool stuff there is too.
My favorite museum in NY!
Way too much to list here, from the whale room to the North American mammals, to the Hayden planarian run by the amazing Neil DeGrass Tyson!
Awesome place to visit in a cold or rainy season in NYC. Watch out with the scam from this guys, they charged 40usd for 3 pics and 1 magnet (that after a while falls) rude ones and racist.
Highly recommended for family with kids! We have limited time thus only managed to visit 3rd floor for the dinasour discovery. Typically you may need at least 3 hours to visit the whole museum. Amazing experience.
Go to planetarium! the dinosaurs & human origins are amazing halls
If i could rate a 0 i would this place has the worst service, every worker here is imcompentent and rude. Also there is no where near enough staff working here. The kiosks to print off tickets do not work and make it a hassle to even get a tickets. If you want to have a fun day I would suggest falling into a sewer and hanging out with rats. Anything is better than this overpriced, noisy, smelly musuem.
I ve lived in NY for the past 21 years and nothing changed in this museum. I have been visiting the museum for years, but took my 3 year old last weekend and was more disappointed than anything.
The museum is outdated and old.
The exhibits are pretty lame, the technology is laughable.
It was ridiculous honestly.
One of the most interesting museum in the world in my opinion. Well organized and friendly staff. I would use the entry on the W 81 St, it s much faster than the main entry.
So much to see and explore here, educational for kids and accomodating to families as well.
Great place ! It was a eye opening experience. Feels like being transported to the prehistoric times.
For me the dinosaur skeletons were the most fascinating thing to see. I also enjoyed to learn and see some of the different achient cultures like the affrican or Indian culture. The stuffed animals are pretty cool too. While walking through the museum I constantly thought of the movie night at the museum. A high light of mine was to see and take a photo of dum dum.
I wish there would have been more structure. Maybe a guide would have helped.
Wonderful experience! Can't wait to go back and see the rest of it!
I am going to copy one of the other guest review, as its exactly how it is. But, I am giving it 2 star for the unfriendly staff. "It is dated, dusty and overpriced. Most exhibits have not been updated since 70. The map is non-interactive, so it is not always easy to figure out where to go next and how to get there. The video they show in planetarium is not property adjusted for the curvature of the projection dome so everything looks distorted. Cafeteria is dirty, pricey and does not have any healthy choices. It is museum of the museum - it shows you how museums used to look and function before computers were introduced. The collection of the dinosaur bones is pretty good."
The experience at the museum can be great or completely not worth based on what you are looking for. Couple of opinions based on my visit ( to be fair I have only visited once)
1) If you are taking kids along and the main aim is for them to have an informative and curiosity awakening visit , the museum is totally worth it . You can easily spend the entire day there trying to understand the science and history behind the thousands of exhibits and even taking some of the additional specials is worth it . The rest of the points below are all only valid if the target audience is mainly adults
1) We took the all inclusive tickets and covered all the special exhibits and shows . Except for the "Dark Universe " show, all other specials were sort of "meh"
2) Sadly for us , since we spent all our time in the special shows, we couldn't spend much time in the General exhibits but whatever we did see was totally worth it
3) I would recommend taking the general admissions only (and maybe the dark universe special) and expect to spend anywhere from 3 hours to the whole day . Many of the exhibits that we did manage to cover were amazing and something unique
Very interesting and informative. Well worth the time
What an awesome place to spend a rainy winter's day in NYC. The best part was the museum highlights tour. If you are short on time, do the guided tour. Our guide was a retired geologist who gave us a history of how the museum came to be, showed us interesting exhibits in every wing, pointed out some unique artifacts including some unexpected ones - like a fossil snail imprint in the marble near one of the stairways. We also watched a planetarium show. The "Oceans of Origami" Christmas tree was awesome.
A museum for everyone to see! Parents and children both explore and learn so much going around the floors that offer so much information and magic to the children eyes! The fourth floor Dinosaur area is definitely our favourite! There is a big bang presentation in the planetarium that you shouldn't miss!
Great place is only one problem this is not exactly friendly place for disabled person
Beautiful and effectively free unless you engage in an additional show
Very extensive. I was hoping for a nice section about the natural history of the State of New York and the Island of Manhattan. I did not find it, although I was nowhere near completing a full tour.
I spent whole day in it . I felt like I am in The night of the museum
It's very nice and you donate what you want for entry.
Huge museum it needs more than one day to explore it's a real treasure of science and exciting facts about our planet and previous life on earth
Terrible. You'd be better off going to a zoo. Exhibits are mostly taxidermied animals. Most of the interesting exhibits aren't covered by general admission. If you're looking to see the museum from the movie, it's not here. What is here is rude staff that spend time on their phones, tired exhibits that could use some updating and interaction, and dark corridors and exhibits that give off a 'you shouldn't be in here vibe'. I wanted to see the museum, plus mummies and the butterfly exhibit. I saw the museum.
Save your money, go to a zoo or read Wikipedia. You get the same experience without sore feet from trying to find some interesting content.
You could easily spend hours there. Too bad the mummy exhibit was not part of general admission.
Excellent place for the kids and tourists.
Wide variety of exhibits
The exhibits are great (if a little outdated in places), and try to come at a less busy time (the Saturday before Easter when it's raining is not one of those times).
Very busy, overheated, old and tatty exhibits, unfriendly staff. Do they ever clean? No seats. Terrible and expensive food. I liked the geology exhibits but full of basic errors. What is an aeon? Find someone with a basic knowledge of science to redo your labels.
I loved my visit to this museum. There was no wait to enter when I went and you can pay using a credit card in one of their self-service machines. The museum is huge and you will need at least 2 - 3 hours to circle completely. We had a hard time finding the exit but it was fun to explore. Highly recommended for travelers of all ages BUT be ready to walk.
My favourite museum anywhere. It's great to go in the morning when the crowds aren't quite as big. Go to Shake Shack after and a walk in Central Park.
It's one of my fav museums in nyc with never ending fossils and costumes. Nothing has changed much since last time I went by still enjoyable
Exhibits were nice but not much better than the museum in my home town. The food in the food court was garbage and triple the price it would have been anywhere else
You gonna need a whole day to explore, but it's worthy.
The museum is a great learning opportunity for children and adults interested in natural history.
Would recommended to spend a whole day exploring in there.
We had 'passes' through NY sightseeing. Yet upon arriving at the museum, we are told we have to wait in the ticket sales line... Because we have to buy tickets... We waited 1.5 hrs and all we did was show them our existing passes and they gave us their tickets.
Absolutely moronic set up. We have travelled around the world, and at a place like the Louvre, which is way busier, we waited in line maybe 20 mins and it was backed up around the block.
After the total s*** show, we get in. At this point I know I will be biased. But the experience was a major let down. Poor signage, lots of people bunched up unsure where to go. You have to pay more to see certain exhibits.
If you do go, bypass the regular line up and just use the kiosk (express) ticket purchase. You can then walk right past the people lined up for the ticket counter. That'll be your quickest bet to get in.
My recommendation is to skip the museum though. Unless you are from a tiny town, or a place that doesn't have a museum, this one is nothing special.
Museum itself is great. It is hard to navigate with out any signage of what is up or down or which floor. You have a map but it is quite big. We missed one of our exhibitions cause we couldn t find it in time. I read the food court was reasonable for family dining but found the prices to be ridiculous. We spent $52 on a family of four for some awful food , and no ice in our drinks. The tables were all dirty. The workers were only cleaning the ones they could turn over so they could leave sooner. If you are able to leave the museum and get reentry perhaps you can just eat at the many food carts parked on the side.
Fantastic museum with extraordinary exhibits. Loved the dinosaurs.
One of the Greatest Institutions in the Entire World. See for yourself.
Loved the place, it's spectacular. But... where is Europe?
Always great. Except that so many areas are now closed or being renovated :/ and some ppl working there were very rude (only one really!)
Hands down the best museum that I've been to. The entire family loved this place.
Quite a wait to get in but definitely worth it.
Amazing museum especially for families with kids. It is huge so seeing everything during one visits needs quite an effort.
The is fantastic. We went to every single display except the space craft. The most crowded areas are where the dinosaur fossils are displayed. The food is very expensive. A small bottle of soda cost $3.50. Be mindful of that.
This is a great place to take children and spend a few hours. I d suggest a stroller, starting in the top floor and working your way down. Dinosaurs and aquatic life is a must. Dioramas are super cool. Many people don t realize the museum entrance fee is a suggested donation and you can essentially pay what you wish! So, if you re looking to experience NYC on a budget, this is up there on the list. The staff is super kind and helpful. The food is decent in the cafeterias. The museum itself is maintained nicely and clean. We really enjoyed our time there.
Definitely avoid the lines and buy your tickets ahead of time. Utilize the coat check $2 per person. And enjoy all the amazing exhibits.
We have been here twice in one week. Also ate enjoying the kids are.
I would need more time than just the 2 1/2 hours that I spent there. The place is huge. Some of their wild life displays are mind blowing.. Just look amazing. A must see if you're in town. If you live in the area, worth the yearly membership. Thank you AMNH for the veteran discount/comped general admission.
