A little smaller than I'm used to, but great for it's size and the lack of snowfall.
A little smaller than I'm used to, but great for it's size and the lack of snowfall.
Went for snow tubing, plan to be there early as lines tend to get longer as time passes by.
Was a good place but now that it's under new ownership selection of season passes are less then ideal for most guests and expensive. Haveing worked and snowboarding there for years it's sad to see this happen.
Great slopes and friendly staff but the restaurant gave me food poisoning. I was in the bathroom for 30 minutes when I could've been out skiing :(
Excellent resort, but pizza was a bit raw with incredible amount of black dust on the back and spoiled our lunch. Next time I'll just bring some home made food.
Great PA mtn, so convenient, a bit crowded on weekends and holidays but otherwise no lines. Best quality snow making!
This is Mid-Atlantic skiing. Keep that in mind.
Arrived on a Wednesday about 30 minutes after opening and no problems with parking and getting set for the day. The parking lot was pure ice - probably should have someone clearing a path.
Plenty of people working the lift ticket line. All of the large lockers had been taken (I assume by people with season passes), so finding a secure home for your stuff could be an issue. Everything is well marked and easy to find, plus there are greeters to point you towards anything.
No snowmaking the night before as the team had put in at least 6 night straight prior, but the surface was great. Well groomed and no ice at all. Best runs in the morning.
I came on 'College Day', and by 11:00 scores had started pouring in. High Speed Quads kept lines to a minimum, but the slopes did get crowded by boarders riding their edges and skiers carving from one side of the trail to the other. But hey, we all had to learn once, so just keep an eye out and stick to the sides of the trails. I'll admit, after a few too many checks to avoid some of the more oblivious beginners, I did start to get annoyed, but that's all part of the bargain. Warm temps did start to slush the snow by early afternoon, so packed it up by two. Didn't really eat, but spent $12 bucks on peanut butter crackers, a cookie, and a Gatorade so that should give you an idea of what lunch will cost you.
Still, a great place to spend a morning with quality runs on well maintained trail with excellent snow. Just get there early to avoid any on-slope bottlenecks, snow getting pushed, and packs of beginners.
Whitetail offers reliable easy coast skiing. Not the same as West coast, bit great if you can work out weekdays or non peak times when there has been persistent cold or recent snow. I wish they would close a slope at a time and groom since the high volume down narrow slopes really creates rough conditions of left for too long.
Generally is a good place for winter , 2h from DC.
Good time skiing. Unfortunately expensive andnno alcohol on the premises.
The pricing on the tubing is high. Also, kids lessons for snowboarding is only at night. Good points are the illusion for 4 or 8- hour lift tickets.
Good for beginners and reasonable distance if you live in md/dc/va. If you've skied in northeast like Vermont or west coast, then lower you expectation, very low. Then again, any resort south of NY isn't very good or challenging. The weekends are like a zoo. So many people that it's no worth it for me for a visit. Again, good for beginners and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.
This is the best ski resort within easy reach of the Baltimore-Washington area, but then again, there isn't much competition. The high speed quad lift is great if you want to spend most of your day on intermediate slopes. The vertical is about 100 feet higher than Liberty. The food is way overpriced and terrible, like most ski resorts!
Perfect blue bird day! Great snow, easy fast lifts! We had a great time! Get there early for good parking.
Good for EC. Friendly staff. Moderate prices. Day trip from DC.
First time at Whitetail and loved it! Still a little early in the season, but they did a good job getting a few runs open.
Great skiing but nothing compared to west coast skiing. I feel let down.
Haven't skied in 15 years. This mountain was a blast and the staff was great. Stay away from the cafeteria pizza
Awesome place to learn to ski or snowboard, short lines on weekdays, plenty of intermediate and harder trails, staff was very helpful. Great family fun!
Well organized, great for kiids and families, all ages, the staff friendly and helpful, eat lunch before or after, food prices thru the roof, overall it was great. Most of the folks i went with are in their 80s, and the staff helped them all the way, great time
Whitetail is a great ski resort for the whole family. It s about an hour and fifteen minutes drive from Rockville. It s a bit bigger than Ski Liberty and the trails are longer and more challenging. If you can, visit during the week as it gets crowded during the weekends. Mornings are best. They make snow if it s cold enough, so even of there is no snow around, you can get a nice skiing or snowboarding exercise on the hills. Pack your lunch and the food there is not that healthy and it s a bit expensive for my taste. They have Starbucks coffee on site.
Can be a bit slushy during the day because it is a front facing mountain, and can get icy at night as a result, but it has good terrain. Very enjoyable beginners trails.
Fun, beautiful, with friendly tubing staff, but very expensive for family to tube for an hour. There are probably less-expensive specials available?? An earlier visit taught us the food is expensive, so we brought our own the next time.
Went on Tuesday, January 8 this year. Paid $130 for 2 x 4-hour lift passes only to find that less than half of the runs were open - the rest had pretty much no snow on them, including the intermediate one that my daughter and I tend to use most. I honestly feel they should have given us a discount. Don't even get me started on the food prices or quality. We bring our own; I refuse to pay Michelin-star prices for obesity-causing junk food that tastes terrible.
It's not the mid west but an easy ride from Baltimore
Good first time skier/boarder package deals (lesson, rental, lift - $49). Steeper slopes can get icy by the end of the day. Fun snow tubing hill.
It was fun snow tubing and staff are nice. Food is very expensive at pizzeria and it's worst food.
We had such a great experience! My husband had never been skiing before and I don't think he could have had a better first time. The first day we had kind of a late start and lucked out by getting there at 4:15 which was 15 minutes before the night ski bundle started, which was awesome because it saved us about $60. For $80/ea we got the intro bundle which gave us lift/lesson/rentals and took the 5:30 class after giving the majic carpet (aka bunny slopes) hill a couple goes. Rodrigo, our instructor was very friendly and did a great job getting us started and at the end gave us a coupon which we immediately ignored. It would have saved us $10/each had we not ignored it. The next day we used the coupon for the $65 passport card (which gave us 1 free all mountain pass/rentals and another lesson and a bunch of other good stuff for future trips). We decided to take an intermediate class and that was the best decision wed made the whole time. We had Bruce as our instructor and WOW was he amazing. He spent 2 hours with just the two of us working on everything we wanted to learn and he thought would benefit us. He took us from timidly crashing down greens to comfortably cruising blues! My husband is so thrilled with the experience he's looking into buying skis and can't wait for our next trip...probably next weekend. Bruce is seriously the best thing about whitetail, which was pretty great to begin with. The snow was soft to fall on, easy to ski on, facilities are clean and we'll kept. Food was decent atmosphere friendly and laid back.
It smelled like sulfur! I also didn't like how hot the Hot Chocolate was! The people were good, but seemed bored out of there minds!
Everyone I interacted with was very friendly, from ticket purchase, to rental, to the lift operators, to the class instructors. Would highly recommend this place! I'm still trying to master the basics of linking turns so I stick to the green slopes. Velvet is my favorite to practice skills on. I went on sidewinder once but it's still a bit out of my comfort zone.
Whitetail is our favorite ski resort in DC metro area. The staff are always very patient and helpful. We have been enjoying skiing here for years. Tip: get there early to enjoy freshly groomed trails.
I'm glad to have a ski resort just 1-2 hours from Baltimore/DC, but the runs are very short and the lift tickets don't reflect that.
Bunny hill was uneven and icy, hard to turn on the snow
They make SOME real piles of snow every chance they get. Good, maybe even great grooming. A lot from a local hill.
Beautiful resort. Very clean. Way bigger then round top.
Awesome place ....If you have your own gear you don't have to rent it
It's a good place to go snow tubing but once you get your ticket the time starts ticking down so I suggest getting the 2 hour one
Very good facilities, quick moving lifts, all around good place to ski/ board. They typically host events (check FB) on weekends which can slow the lifts a bit with the increased traffic, typically not an issue though. They do suffer from Mother Nature not cooperating so make sure the check the forecast and their website for latest conditions.
Besides the rude heavyset woman with the huge gut and skinny little legs at the front window, who likes to sit at the table in the cafeteria, stuff her face and talk about everyone who walked by, not telling me that my child could ride in a double tube with an adult, instead of saying he had to stay on the kiddie hill, my first experience was great.
Great place for people of all skill level! This was my first time ever snowboarding and the atmosphere made me feel super comfortable. Great hills, great lifts and great staff can t ask for much more.
Best skiing within an hour of dc Baltimore area. Only huge problem is NO alcohol. It is a dry county and as such a dry mountain. No beer. Big miss.
Great Skiing place, the food is expensive without the meal ticket (make sure you purchase a meal ticket if you are going to eat there). The customer support and staff there are great! You will always meet new people on lifts that tend to be kind! I love going here.
Honestly I suck at winter sports, but the staff was really nice and patient. The facilities were clean and accsesible.
I wish they used variable snow grooming techniques to slow down some bad skiers & force snowboarders to turn more.
I like how the staff treat everyone. They are so friendly and helpful.
Family friendly place, that's about an hour from Germantown, MD. Kids loved the snow tubing slopes.
Having grown up and lived in DC area pretty much my entire life, I've been to Whitetail several times since I started to ski. Being only a 1.5 hour drive, it is one of the closest ski slopes to DC. For a day trip, many people go to either Whitetail or Liberty Ski Resort in Fairfield, PA, which is comparable in distance and time to Whitetail. These two ski resorts are owned by the same company.
If you're a more experienced skier, I think Whitetail has more variety and has more challenging/steeper slopes than Liberty. Whitetail also has a better terrain park/half-pipe. One area where Liberty has the advantage in is night skiing. Whitetail has no black diamonds open during the night. While most of the best East Coast ski resorts are located in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, Whitetail is a good option for those just starting out skiing/snowboarding and it's a nice option for anyone who only wants to go for one day.
Whitetail is fairly crowded on weekends, especially holiday weekends. The lift lines are insanely ridiculous. I've waited half an hour to get on a quad lift this past Presidents Day weekend. If you can, try to go during the weekday for lower prices and shorter lines. I've gone on weeknights and there are practically no lines and not too many folks on the slopes. It's great because you don't have to worry about bumping into anyone or having to suddenly move out of someone's way if they fall or change course.
Prices: 4 hour flex - $53 (weekday), $64 (weekend). 8 hour flex - $58 (weekday), $69 (weekend). Extended (until 10pm) - $65 (weekday), $73 (weekend). Ski rental is $45 either weekday or weekend. Snowboard rental is $50. If you get the all mountain package deal (includes lift ticket, rental, and optional lesson), it's $105. I believe Liberty is more or less the same price, maybe $1-3 cheaper on the above options.
Another thing to point out: Whitetail is a dry resort and does not serve alcohol. Liberty, on the other hand, has a lounge where you can order alcoholic beverages. Many families prefer Whitetail for this reason.
Good bunny slope, nice green slope. Great place to spend half the day on your arse.
Great place for a daycation! With the warmer days, it doesn't have the best of powder, but still good enough to have a blast
Of the resorts this company owns, this is the best one in the area. The slopes are way better than Liberty's. The chairlifts are faster but the lines are longer. The rental area is very hectic and has little to no space to get ready, etc. The food is very expensive (as usual) but they are less Stony than Liberty, and the food is better (with more options). It's overall fun and worth the extra since from the DMV area.
Got a concussion. My fault not theirs, but great slopes and service.
good little ski hill not too far from DC. great for beginners and intermediates. lovely staff, very well organized.
Great resort that is relatively close for people in the DMV (1-2 hr drive). Good amount of runs for different skill levels but can get pretty crowded on weekends. Beginners may have a better time learning at Liberty.
PSA Please ride at your skill level, if you have just started skiing/boarding please avoid the steeper trails. ALSO, please learn about ski/boarding etiquette and for the love of goodness, take a lesson if you don't know what you're doing!
Only went snow tubing. A little disappointed by the lines however they did move. The real let down was having to walk in the lane you just tubed down normally you make it most of the way making for a short walk or jog, but the tubes just weren't going far this year. Thus you walk a little more but still fun. The staff was great.
If you live in the area get a season pass otherwise prices are just too high
Very busy on Saturdays. But there's only so many options local to the DC area.
Staff were trained well. Good rental equipment. Amazing variety of slopes. Instructors were very helpful.
Fun little ski resort in Southern Pennsylvania. Well groomed trails and nice facilities with friendly staff.
Although new to "East Coast"....This was the first ski resort I've been to that doesn't sell beer!
