This was my second visit to Amsterdam and I wasn t able to make it to the Van Gogh museum in my last trip, something I remedied this time around. Honestly, I m glad I did it and I even discovered some new paintings I now love but was previously completely unaware even existed. That being said it s not what I was expecting. They layout of the museum is a little weird, you start on the bottom floor after you come up an escalator from a different part but the way the paintings are placed was kind of detracting from the art for me. You look at some self portraits on the first floor then have to shuffle up a weird set of stairs level by level to the top floor before having to come back down again against mobs of people heading up. They had a few areas with paintings for artist he inspired or that he was inspired by with was interesting in seeing overlap or details that he got from them or other artist got from him. The audio guide could be improved or expanded on and if you plan on getting it bring your own headphones, at the time of my visit they had these horrible headsets that were way to small and dug into the back of my ear. For five euro I don t feel like the audio guide gave you much more than what I was reading in the bits next to the painting. Overall, worth the visit. You ll see some Van Gogh s you ve most likely never seen but they could make it leaps and bounds better by figuring a better planned layout for the museum and the painting placement. I feel like I walked through a building and looked at some art but because of the lighting, layout and people I didn t really experience the art.
