Lots of walking and stairs at this resort. With the rain (I went during rainy season), we had to be careful not to slip. I've had better food at other resorts in countries. The room was updated, but we didn't really spend much time there. The resort is pretty and I really love the views and sunsets!!! Also, we didn't have to pay a ton of money to see monkeys. We just took a stroll to the beach, looked up and there were several monkeys hanging in the trees!!!

We did the all inclusive. The staff was wonderful, the majority spoke limited English [Not a problem, speak fluent spanish]. Went to the volcano " De la vieja", it was closed d/t the strong winds, did the mud, hot springs baths, wonderful! Overall the stay was great. We did go to Wal-Mart to buy water, d/t a bottle of water is $8.00 & in Wal-Mart the case of water is $8.00. You do have to shop around because the prices are higher in the majority of places. If you go out of your way, you can get better deals on the souvenirs . In downtown Leberia, there is a small souvenir store, off the main road, side street, if I recall right is called "Oscar's ". They are very reasonable. It was a great experience & the people are wonderful, polite & very well mannered.

I was taken to this resort for an epic Birthday the staff at the pool were great!! The shuttle was an issue...we waited at the beach for 45 min and then walked up to the resort...Our villa was lovely but way up on the hill I waited one night again fro 40 min for the shuttle, and as I walked up the hill there he was parked on the side of the road on his phone!!! The last night we were at the resort the lights went out for over an hour at dinner time and it was the night we made reservations for the restaurant, so we went to a restaurant off site we asked the front desk to cover our shuttle to the airport instead of creating a great Customer Service experience they yelled at us and refused to hear our request!!!! The pool had a lot of loose tiles which cut our feet.

Very nice the villa with spectacular views, excellent food as well as the treatment of the staff, although the 5 days we have been with the sofa bed open, it was reported 3 times that it was "fixed" but no one appeared, there is no shampoo, the cleaning is done every other day, it seems to me that it is not right.

The place is nice the hotel rooms nice the pools very well but the all-inclusive system leaves much to be desired the food is very basic pork and fish no beef or any other type of seafood the super basic snacks the liquor for the cocktails are of The cheapest ones. For the price that was paid $ 129 pp it is preferable to go to Riu Guanacaste cheaper or to Riu Palas which would be almost the same price.

Our own private Villa, 3 bedroom 2 bath. Perfect for our family trip with teenagers, we all had space to relax after our adventure excursions! We rented a car and never had a problem with parking or coming and going through the gate. Close enough to walk to the beach but wonderful to be able to take the shuttle during the heat of the day back to the condo. No view but loved the afternoon and evenings on the patio to cool off with a plunge pool and hammock surrounded by tropical plants. Villa was older but not bad in any way. I love to cook and the kitchen had bare minimum in my opinion, yet it still work out just fine. Master bath was small, but again not an issue, just noted if it is a concern to others. We never went to the pool or ate at the restaurants, we didn't do the all inclusive or book excursions through them, but it was available. Check in was smooth, great staff, and pleasantly uneventful!

Very low end resort.Nice to get out of cold but ....very dry rocky terrain....no food or drinks served at beach..no service at all....no included restaurants to switch up same old food served at main restaurant.....there is one on site but shockingly you have to pay 35pp ...front desk people treat you good as gold when you first arrive but then when you don't purchase a time share the kindness and helpfulness rapidly disappears..we were constantly hounded to see a presentation.. They say is not time share and they trick you..they give discounts for excursions if you participate..Even in the presentation they speak bad about time share and make rude comments yet it is exactly the same scam.We heard from several people the resort hasn't changed for years. The maintenance is extremely poor.Lots of broken stuff to view.Maids that clean room daily do only that ...clean floors make bed...don't bother taking dirty dishes.don't.replace used coffee...My husband and i went to celebrate our anniversary and made the best of it... My hubby went without coffee in room even though we mentioned it...did a couple excursions to get off property...This resort is built on a mountain so you need to wait outside your room to get a drive everywhere literally. For suppers...down to beach..office..it's hard to enjoy the beach as there are no services so walking or swimming when you get thirsty you need to take the shuttle back to main building to get anything. The front desk push taking their cabs everywhere. There is a bank literally 3 min up the street but tell you it's to far too walk you need a cab...for a couple that's 10 one way and that's going at the designated times they have set up...if you vary at all the charge you 15 per couple each way.
We did not leave very happy. We do allot of travelling around the world and this is not a place we will be speaking very highly of and definitely won't return

The staff truly treated us like we were their guests. They helped us with our Tours, carried our Luggage, offered their assistance with just about anything we could think of. We saw 4' Lizards or Iguanas, Monkeys and lots of beautiful birds. We enjoyed the Wet Bar at the Pool... Thank you Villas Sol, we'll be back!

Each guest is treated very differently (a colored band on your arm and it designates your status, as well as the service you can expect).
Pros: You ll meet a lot of interesting people from many different places and all of the staff speak English and Spanish fluently. Alcohol is provided frequently (during the specficied times) and there are some fun drinks, as well as a beer on tap. The wine wasn t horrible and although the alcohol was not top notch, it didn t make us sick. Room service to clean was available each day for free, although we didn t use it. Wide variety of foods at the buffet, although it remained similar each day. Again, nothing made us sick and we ate many items and most of our meals at the resort. Even the water is perfectly safe! It s smoke free! Loved that. The A-La-Carte dinner was very good and we enjoyed the fancier dining experience one night for free. The front desk is suppose to automatically schedule your reservation, but some people did not get told and had to ask.
We met an AMAZING guy down at the beach at Playa Hermosa (ride the free tram down for free). His name is Gilbert and he s a very nice young man, huge smile and currently has braces. He used to work at the resort, but now he helps arrange for vacation presentations at other locations. He typically hangs out at the entrance to the beach. You can trust him!! He will arrange for you to hear the sales pitch (ours was located in Coco Beach and included round trip transportation and lunch at a real restaurant in town). We already own a timeshare and did not purchase what they were offering and it wasn t a big deal. The BEST part was the new connection with Gilbert. He negotiated excursions for us for free and for reduced prices. He has some amazing connections. He always ensured we had transportation and the arranged excursions at the agreed upon prices. Villas Sol may try to warn you or threaten you about not talking to him or going to another presentation, but that violates your rights. This guy even took us to the airport, like a friend would, when Villa Sol was insisting we pay $40 for their shuttle that was free for everyone else and already going to the airport with empty seats. Gilbert made our trip so much better because we actually left the resort and had experiences that didn t cost hundreds of dollars (zip lining, sunset catamaran with scuba diving, etc). Trust him, he will help you!! I communicated via email with him the entire time. He s responsive and so knowledgeable.
Cons: Bugs and bees. I used bug spray (three types and a pesticide bracelet) and still suffered numerous bites every day. These bites look like mosquito bites, but I never saw a mosquito. Red sores just appeared. Usually you see/feel a bug biting you, but I never did. I did see and feel the bee sting me at the pool bar, while sitting in the water. There are also sugar ants. I had to spray Deet in the shower to stop the dozens entering through the cracks. There are also beetles, dragon flies, wild cats, raccoons, skunks, iguanas, birds, etc. Most want your food. If you don t like critters, try a different place. Steep hills and lots of stairs. If you have mobility issues, this is not the place for you. The deluxe king bed in the hotel is atrocious. Plan on a very very very hard mattress. The nightly music entertainment is pretty sad. Mostly kids singing songs in Spanish for karaoke night and a DJ taking requests on other nights. The prices in Costa Rica were much higher than we anticipated. I think the rich are taking in the money and the working class are in complete poverty, having to work multiple jobs to barely survive. This is clear when you consider the average income is less than $8,000 USD per YEAR! We tried to tip the staff that put forth the effort and tried to make our day special. I think the general moral of the workers is low because they are working really hard for next to nothing and they are exhausted.

Terrible attention, they gave us a bad snack 2 days in a row, they put us at 4 in a villa for two, they made us lose 2 afternoons waiting for things to be fixed and they didn't fix them

Very good food and the price ratio being an all inclusive. The pool bar is a hit and the drinks. Especially the Morrocoy. The free transportation system is fun and effective but you have to be piles. The truth is I have no complaints. Only something worth noting. There was no show or night activity except dancing and drinking liquor. I have no complaints at all.

This has truly been the worst vacation experience ...

This has truly been the worst vacation experience I have ever had. After 20 years of traveling I have never been treated with such disrespect. It all began with the "VIP" agency which contacted us regarding the hotel. They claimed to be associated with Hilton Grand Vacation (with whom I own timeshares with) and used their credibility to sell us a stay at Villas Sol for $1700. After thinking it over, we decided to purchase the package. A month later, upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted by a delightful notice. They asked us to sign a disclaimer regarding fraud, little did I know that they will be the first to commit fraud. The large 2 bedroom suite that we were promised wasn't what we recieved. They gave us, a family of 4, a duel bed hotel room. This room was the size of my bathroom back home and was not only cramped, but outdated, smelly and rusty. The room was so small my son had to sleep on the floor. I didn't want him to, but the hotel forced us. They claimed that there were no rooms available. So he slept the entire vacation in the floor in a cramped 15 x 7 ft hotel room.

After the 3 hour argument with the concierge, the manager finally showed up. He wasn't on the property all day, and he left no one in charge during his absence. He was also of no help. He attempted to find a room but couldn't and told us to check in with him the next day. The following morning I called him up, and was greeted with a voice mail system. I left a message and left one after the other for the rest of the day, but no answer. He never even returned my calls. After giving up on him, we decided to brave the rooming conditions and enjoy our vacation.

The only positive comment I can give is regarding the beautiful views of the water from the balcony. Other than that, the hotel cannot compete with other resorts. The beach is disgusting, filled with poisionous pufferfish and jelly fish. The food is low in quantity and quality. I received the all inclusive package, but nothing was worth eating, food was repulsive and bar was limited.

Other than eating and drinking at the bar, there was nothing to do past 6pm. We had dinner each night, then went back to our tiny room and slept until the next day. If you have children, trust me, this is not the hotel for you. My hand was forced to pay the $25 per day Internet package just to get them off my back. And even after paying the insane rate. We only recieved download rates of 5 mbps. This isn't even enough to stream Netflix properly. Oh lord this vacation was a disaster...

In conclusion, this has truly been the worst experience of my life. I have never been shown such disrespect, nor stayed under such obscene rooming conditions. This is the first and final time I am visiting Villas Sol.

PS: they are insane if they think I'm attending the timeshare presentation. I work as a lawyer and once I get home you can bet they will hear from me again.

I will never rent a place at Villa Sol in Playa Hermosa again!
The staff at the reception center were pleasant, but they would not help you with any assistance needed to support local businesses, such as calling for dinner reservations when we didn't have cell phone service. They would only help with there internal services and there food service was medocre at best.
The noise from the lower pool area was so loud that the bass actually vibrated our bed. The music was so loud from 8:00 PM until midnight that you could not sit outside and carry on a normal conversation and we were at least one hundred yards from the pool area.
During the day the activities people had there mic so loud it hurt your ears, this was during pool games and Bingo. It had to be causing hearing loss to the children at the pool.
We left messages for the evening manager to meet us to discuss the noise levels and he never showed up. All of our neighbors were very upsetting with the noise levels.
If you want a peaceful vacation, Villa Sol in Playa Hermosa should not be your destination.

Very bad costumer service, really unclear information about vacation plans and prices.... To many money seekers in the management (which it's okay, but really at least try to not look like one) The view it's amazing and the plave it's nice, but they will rip you off.

This facility is a resort that will try to sell you Vacation membership packages by a company called HSI... do NOT (I repeat) DO NOT purchase ANY packages. They are a complete SCAM. Especially w a guy named TOMMY JONES who completely misled my friend & I to believe we were purchasing one thing, but it turned out to be NOT at all what he sold. What's worse is his manager REYNALDO would not do anything about it when I tried to dispute this. No return of phone calls or messages. Complete scammers. Costa Rica is an absolutely amazing country but don't ruin your perception by staying at this place. This is by far NOT a 4 star facility. Maybe 2-3 star at best. Rooms are outdated, not the cleanest. Food was mediocre. The best part of this facility is the view but for the most part, it's pretty isolated from town & attractions & you pay a big fee for a shuttle/taxi to get anywhere. The whole vacation sell experience ruined it for me. Bad business period.

Stayed at the hotel, so I cannot comment about the villas. Rooms are simple and it was clean. Food was pretty bland, except for the Spanish night, when the paella was excellent. Shuttle to the beach comes every few minutes. Great view of the bay from the restaurant and the rooms.

Beautiful resort spreading from the beach up a very steep hill. This vantage gives spectacular views of the ocean. Resort transportation is excellent at getting you around (and up and down). The restaurants are very good and the amenities wonderful.

This is a hard review for me to do since we did en...

This is a hard review for me to do since we did enjoy Costa Rica, and Villas Sol, and the people and we did have a good time.
Let's start with how many stars Villas Sol is suppose to.
Villa Sol is suppose to be a four star resort.
Since we have been to many resorts to Cuba, and everything from 2 stars to 4 stars in Cuba, I:ll use that for comparison as well.
Food: Cuba is generally better. We never starved, and it was good, but could have used more flavor and variety. It is small changes from lunch to dinner, and then the next day small changes again, so it can get boring, but you will not starve (in fact I usually overeat)
Rooms: About the same as Cuba, clean and very simple and basic.
Resort: Villas Sols is all choppy with "hills", condos, houses, another resort on the property, villas, etc. So getting around is not easy. To "not take the shuttle" your fitness level would have to be quite high, like 8 or 9 our of a 10 rating, like at a marathon level.
Drinks: Since drinking the beer all day hardly produces a buzz, it isn't 5 % like in Canada, and I would say the drinks are watered down. However, the Chilean wine will do the trick, it wasn't tampered with.
Service: Check-in was fast, and the check out was fast, service generally faster than compared to Cuba. Getting drinks at a busy bar can be difficult anywhere. Everybody was friendly and polite.
Hills: More about the "Hills" on the resort. Let's clear something up here , a hill is a steep incline, and these were not "hills". If you fell off of one of them, you would go straight down, so I would say the resort is built more on a cliff ,then a hill. It's so steep , you will slide on your seat while taking the shuttle, and be careful not to slide right off of it.
Smoking / Vaping: The fine on the resort is $250 USD, and no smoking in your room. Smoking is on the beach, or at the front gate. It is Costa Rican law, so not the resorts fault.
Service in the Buffet: Inconsistent: some really good services and some seem to be racist to Gringos. There will be costa ricans (ticos) visiting the resort, they will get better service and they will not tip. A Gingo will tip and will get worse service at the buffet. Twice we went to the buffet during the week, and we never we offered a glass of water, a drink, or a refill.. The server never came over even once, and other servers had to clear our dishes. So no tip for that guy on that day, we generally left a couple of bucks per meal.
Beach: Quiet and good, but they need to do something about the time share people (not found in Cuba btw). So they will bug every time you go down to the beach the first few days, until they recognize you and stop. The excursions are cheaper by the beach, and Jose with the blue shorts can set you up for a good excursions for a cheap price. He got us a private taxe it Playas de Coco (more stuff to do there) for 10 usd each way (1 to 4 people) . The taxi driver Ebsteven was amazing and we used him three times.
Activities: Well no shows, and there are a few games by the wet bar, but not much. Way better in Cuba I found.
So my final rating is 3 stars for this resort, even though we had a great time, met many people from Canada and the States that were awesome, the whole week it hardly rained, was sunny, water was great, food good, but we wouldn't go back to this resort.
We would definitely return to Costa Rica, it's awesome!!!
But this resort is not a four star. Three at the most, it is dated, and things are not consistent, they really push the time shares, and the excursions, and need more activities and at least some shows for free on the resort.

The bay restaurant bar is poorly serviced. Those who serve do not have a simple idea of customer service. Many flies on the bottles and do nothing to keep them away. They should choose well who attends the bar because they are of very bad service.

This resort do not even deserve a star or even to call a resort, is a dump place. Horrible customer service, unhelpful my family travel a long way get there late and they scammed with their mandatory All inclusive fees, their pool and bar close and still wants to overcharged fees. We used our exchange points so not worth it to visit this unpleasant place. Is the second time in Costa Rica and both times have been a nightmare.
