My favorite art gallery in the city, especially the Rothko room, the Arthur Dove collection, and their gift shop.
Nice and heartbreaking exhibit: the warmth of other suns
Small museum, took less than 2h to see. We went on a Thursday and it was free for 30 years old and less
A fantastic modern and contemporary collection. Well worth the price is admission.
A beautiful museum. Lovely permanent collection and thoughtful special exhibits
A very nice gift store and cafe
Would be nice to have more touring info esp for younger visitors
Great art @friendly informative & patient docent. (I attended with wonderful a 1st grade class!!!)
I've been a member of the Phillips for years, and, weather permitting, try to visit at least once or twice a month. Favorites move in and out of storage. Paintings I've never seen before suddenly appear, making every visit special. The current exhibit, Zilia Sanchez Soy Isla, was totally new to me. What a great opportunity to be able to see it again and again before it closes. Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party and Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series are must-sees. There's a discounted $48 individual membership available to seniors, military, students and teachers and people living more than 150 miles away, which includes two free passes. There are lots of restaurants in the area and a very nice little cafe in the gallery if you want a cup of coffee or light lunch.
This is one of the great small museums in DC. It is a private museum, displaying a private art collection, but it is free to the public during the week. It is worth it to pay entrance if you visit on the weekend, and any day you have to pay to see special exhibits, which can be fantastic.
This collection has an amazing selection of very recognizable and famous paintings by a variety of artists, not limited to one niche or genre. Among my favorite pieces are paintings by Cezanne, Pissarro, Rothko, Mondiran, and Miro. You have to see the piece called "Wax Room" by Wolfgang Laib in person.
If you live in DC, this is a great museum to be a member of, there are frequent member only events, and you can bring your out of town guests in for free.
The cafe is a great place to take a break and get a coffee or even lunch, on a nice day the patio is a wonderful spot to relax. Last but not least, you'll find something for everyone in the gift shop.
Gorgeous, eclectic collection. I loved the migration series by Jacob Lawrence.
Went for the Renoir and Friends exhibit. It was beautifully displayed and a wonderful collection.
We attended a lecture here. The hall was very nice. There was not time to view art, but I did notice some Ansel Adams pieces as we walked through. It's a pleasant place. Parking is a bear. I'll go one day to tour but coupled with some other purpose.
Art is important and this is a pretty cool collection.
Una delle migliori collezioni americane di arte. Da non perdere se si passa da Washington, in particolare la collezione possiede "la colazione dei canottieri" di Renoir, pietra miliare dell'impressionismo.
It's an amazing gallery, with many masterpieces from Van Gough, Rothko, Gaugin and Monet. It's free during the weekdays, and the staff is super helpful.
Nice gallery but wasn't as impressed with the collection compared to say all the Smithsonians. Liked that they brought in contemporary artists as well.
Loved it! Changing exhibitions and for free tours once your inside! Nordic Impressions is really good!
Always an inspired experience, missing the large Bonnard bath paintings though.
Great Museum. Fantastic collection. An absolute treasure. I can t wait to visit again. The Nabi Art Collection was exquisite and a once in a lifetime viewing. A+++
Went to see the Nordic impression exhibit. Excellent! Great talk from one of the guides on the Phillips brothers! Loved it
Wonderful artwork, great building. Each room is themed, so it's fun to guess at the theme. Favorite include: Van Gogh's House at Auvers, John Sloan, Arthur Dove, Gene Davis (a DC artist!), and the Rothko Room
Yes, sort of in a house.
Yes, in a cool neighborhood worth the visit including a major fountain designed by the designer of the Lincoln memorial.
But really yes, emphatically yes because it houses the impressionist painting, The Luncheon of the Boating Party by Renoir. My favorite. Check it out and sit on the bench for a while.
A superb collection of pieces spanning many periods. One could easily get lost in here for an entire day. The Rothko room is especially cathartic.
Outstanding collection. Probably saw my favorite exhibition of the year here (which is something of a feat, as that's a good chunk of my job description), but I've never come away disappointed, whatever happens to be on.
I love this museum! There is always something fun and different happening here. I think it is one of the best museums in DC if you enjoy European art.
Free admission when the third floor exhibit is down. Best private collection of art in Washington DC.
Not all galleries were open. Still It was a great experience!
An intimate setting with an outstanding collection of some of the most important artists paintings of the 20th century
Excellent museum. Wonderful historical art collection in an elegant setting. Loved it!
4/5
An amazing gallery and cool place
Nicely curated permanent collection and wonderful exhibitions. Additionally, there is a Tryst cafe on the premises and a very good gift shop. It's also a close walk to Dupont Circle and the Metro station.
Three level art gallery. Street parking was easy on a Sunday. Could spend an hour or two looking at everything. Probably only worth going if contemporary art is your thing.
Great private collection in a family mansion that has been expanded. Always has at least one outstanding temporary exhibit as well.
Fantastic private museum in DC with an impressive collection. Offers extended hours on Thursday. From 5-8:30 on the first Thursday of the month you can attend Phillips after 5, which includes live music, food, and drinks (it is advisable to get tickets in advance for this). Renoir's The Boating Party is the jewel of the collection. If you can't picture it right now, you'll know it when you see it.
Amazing venue tucked away just off "Embassy Row" in a quaint neighborhood, featuring some of the most famous Impressionist-era works of art. Cafe and gift shop to enhance the visit.
An extremely beautiful and inspirational art gallery. Loved to see all of the art there, ranging from small time amateur artists to hugely famous classic paintings.
Excellent collection, but to my eye, a rather confusing display and arrangement of the art works.
The gem of DuPont Circle. A much more approachable museum than any other I've visited. Pro tip: look through doorways here, it usually highlights a particularly notable work.
Jazz Festival was very nice after admiring all of the Art.
I love the location which is in a quiet and upscale neighborhood. The museum layout is well thought of, and the art displays are spread out in several floors of the building. From time to time, there are special exhibits of never seen before art pieces from well known museums in the USA and overseas.
Some hidden treasures here. Would recommend a visit!
We were near the Phillips collection...I hear it's remarkable
The art was great. The mansion it is displayed is work of art too. Worth the trip. Naked Nixon below.
This is a great gallery with lots of modern art to satisfy your needs. Admission is $12 for adults with a $2 teacher discount, and it's free on your birthday!
Beautiful! I would love to go back when the house is reopened.
A wonderfully diverse collection in a great neighborhood (Dupont Circle). I suggest attending the Phillips After 5 events for a younger, more party-like feel. If that's not your style, then any other time should work out.
Absolutely wonderful gallery and space. Visit often.
A pleasant, calm place to look at beautiful art, mostly from the last 150 years, emphaisis on French painters. Great exhibit now on Scandinavian art, really nice mix of sculpture, photography, video and painting. The building itself is very interesting to wander through. Well worth the $12 fee. Also in a lovely part of the city.
Really enjoyed our selves here, the book selection was great and unique
You truly must see the Warmth of Other Suns show. Very moving.
I love the artwork in this museum. It would be a five star rating if I didn't have to have someone staring directly at me constantly in every room. I have been to nearly every museum in DC and never feel as uncomfortable as I do here.
A fabulous collection displayed in a remarkable gallery. Beautiful large walls, lit as it gets
The permanent collection is free (and awesome!) and the special exhibits are well curated and cool too. Worth going to even if you just do the free part.
A very good collection with many not-to-be-missed pieces; the Rothko Room is monumental
A treasure in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. The original modern art museum!
This is free through the weekday (permanent collections). If you can wait until then or until the government opens, I would. Way too packed due to the shutdown so I couldn't even see the Luncheon of the Boating Party by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In fact, I couldn't see anything in that room and I tried 3 times. There was a large tour group hogging the entire space. Otherwise, a great collection and worth the $10 admission.
Really nice to see art in a home. Loved the curation. The placement of art by themes and styles is one of the best I've seen.
Don't miss the bees wax room. Take a big breath through your nose!
Best art museum experience in D.C. The size, location in a neighborhood and top tier collection make it must visit destination. Cafe provides a quick respite to extend your visit.
One of the finest modern art museums anywhere. The excellent tours are helpful, as there is very little information posted with the art.
Great collection of 20th century works without having a super-modern feel to it.
Great houses and more intimate way of exposition. Part was closed for new exhibitions.
Great art and the special exhibition on top floor is always useful and cool. Tryst cafe has great pastries and lunches but closes early at 4pm. Street parking is a challenge but it's near DuPont Circle subway and near numerous bus lines.
Great place to check out some famous works of art. They hold Phillips after 5 events that I highly recommend on Thursdays and have some interesting special exhibits.
Amazing and quaint museum with friendly staff. A lot of well known artist's less popular works.
