Beautifully laid out. Spend some time taking in the Rothko room on the second floor.
Beautifully laid out. Spend some time taking in the Rothko room on the second floor.
The collection was so beautiful. The architecture of the building is gorgeous. The neighborhood is Devine, and the experience is great. And all this for a low price. It's spectacular
Marvelous exhibit of photos, films, sculpture and paintings. Gives scope to the plight of immigrants in the U.S. and other countries. Hard to believe how little we care.
Incredible collection as a permanent exhibition you will find several works by internationally recognized artists such as Van Gogh, Matisse, among others; You cannot leave without admiring Reinor's Rowers Lunch box, and spend several minutes in the room dedicated to Rothko. The temporary exhibition has a cost, which is worth paying, and the permanent one is totally free despite being a private collection.
Totally worth it and a "must not miss." It's actually free and driven by donations and sits in a great neighborhood.
Just amazing see many art work from the impressionism Renoir ,Degas , Cezanne very nice
Can't wait for the upgrades to the old house are complete. The new building had wonderful exhibits, and events for members. This art collection in the heart of Dupont Circle is a treasure.
Fantastic collection in a world renowned museum that is somehow overlooked by visitors.
Nice smaller gallery. Beautiful van Gogh and Renoir in the permanent collection.
It's boring bc I'm a teen and it's a museum I went for school
The permanent collection here is fantastic. When i visited, there were two exhibits, one horrid (karen apel) and one fantastic (William Merrit Chase). Check before you come.
Though far from an unreasonable amount, there is an entrance fee, something atypical amongst Washington's myriad museums.
This museum is for art lovers only, and should be skipped be the tourist with only so many sites and museums that can be visited. If you are a DC frequenter or lover of art, Phillips should be a priority. For everyone else the Capitol, Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art, and museums on the mall and monuments will be time better spent.
Picasso, Monet, Manet, Van Gough, Renoir, they are all there. A nice, small collection tucked away in Dupont. A nice respite after wandering the area, admiring the architecture.
A place you must visit! There are two collections ... first and second floor free ... and on the third floor right now a klee collection, admission to this collection costs 12 dollars worth paying. Excellent attention except at the reception where you buy your ticket ... the gift shop with many beautiful things. Also the dupont circle area with architecture to admire, the main embassies area.
Small museum, with a great centrepiece, the luncheon of the boating party. They were renovating part of it so I didn't see all. Maybe they are done now.
There are some great collections and the Scandinavian art is awesome. It s a nice gallery and it s worth the entrance fee. I find the staff to be a bit rude but I think it s how they ve been instructed to behave... my suggestion is just make an automatic announcement that the gallery will be closing in 15 minutes rather than the staff getting upset that people are taking more than half a second to leave...
The first modern art museum in the U.S. Although is small, it has high quality arts. Also has wonderful events. At the moment, part of the museum (old house) is under renovation
Great collection of American art and French Impressionist paintings.
My favorite museum in DC. Residential environment meets museum worthy pieces. Wonderful.
A surprising find just north of DuPont Circle. The special exhibition drew me inside but the regular collection was diverse and very enjoyable. Surprised to find well-knokwn Renoir, Van Gogh and others. Cafe is popular and gets busy at lunchtime.
Great museum. Highly suggest to get there early in the morning to enjoy it with fewer people.
You cant take backpack in with you, need to leave it at the cloakroom. %
It's a must go place in Washington. I loved it so much. Great staff - nice, friendly and willing to help with any info you might need!!
This is America's first modern art museum. It is small and had an excellent special exhibit when I went. It's quite a treasure!
Beautiful art and intimate viewing. Can't miss the Monet.
It's nice but a little small for my taste. The fixed explosion is free from Monday to Friday.
A good micro soup. beautiful postcards. happy meeting with the boaters but the other works are very abstract for us
A great boutique museum with friendly staff and a diverse collection
A wonderful small sampling of famous modern artists: from El Greco to Paul Klee. Also, of note are the Jacob Lawrence Migration Plates.
Definitely great place to take advantage of alumni discount for terps and other schools.
I enjoyed the place. They generally displayed the art in a way that made viewing it helpful and didn't take away from the experience by having a lot of glare. The attendants were helpful. It's a little out of the way, but I think it's worth the trip.
The Phillips is my favorite collection in DC. The permanent collection is unimpeachable and its rotating exhibits are always noteworthy. It costs money, unlike Smithsonians, but it is WORTH it.
Wonderful collection of Impressionism and 20th-century art. Particularly strong right now on the works of Paul Klee and his successors. There is a small room dedicated to four paintings by Marc Rothko . Well worth the visit by itself.
The first modern art museum, it remains a gem! Skillfully housed in Duncan Phillips' historic home and newer additions, the space is the perfect home for the art work. The permanent collection is lovely, and their special exhibitions are always well curated and thought provoking. An added bonus, the permanent collection is free on weekdays.
There's a wonderful family gallery, at a child's eye level, with intriguing questions, colorful cushions and an excellent nook with great art books to read during a break.
To complete your experience, both the museum shop and Cafe are delightful. I never fail to find delightful, unexpected treasures in the shop - fabulous books for all ages, luxurious pens and pencils, jewelery, and much more.
Tryst, the cafe, serves their coffee with animal crackers!
Fantastic all around.
Express Care the nurse was friendly it made me feel very comfortable doctor was awesome very kind of do explain to me exactly what's a back it will help me get better so I thank Express Care
Very interesting rotating collection private museum.
Every time I come here I notice something about the collection or the buildings housing it that I hadn t seen before (and I have coming here for nearly 40 years).
Great art, not crowded, my 3 year old loved it, but she's used to me dragging her to art. Maybe not the best place for a regular young child. And the building is beautiful inside as well. Very friendly staff, if a bit eager to keep you away from the sculptures!
Large collection curated in small, intimate spaces. Loved!
Some great pieces but when we visited there was a construction going on and they were setting up for the new exhibition.
A less-well known gem in DC. Never crowded and fun to explore the old mansion without tons of people. Philips After 5 events are great for dates or families.
Fantastic museum, worth the price of admission. Tucked into a cute street off DuPont Circle, with a permanent collection that is out of this world, as well as rotating installations and contemporary work. Great staff as well, and the gift shop is a delight.
Great museum with very friendly staff. I will definitely be back the next time I visit DC
Attended the After 5 event which we plan to do again for a new exhibit.
The gallery houses an irresolvable tension in its walls that amplifies the troubled expansiveness of its modern art collection. Does this better than the Barnes in some ways.
Great gallery. Excellent collection of art by some great artists. Friendly welcoming staff.
Museum is top of the line. The exhibits change frequently enough to keep me interested. Well worth a membership.
This is a lovely contemporary art collection and it was the first of its kind in the United States.
Went to a special exhibition of Renoir, with Luncheon of the Boating Party as the centerpiece. Nice to understand so much background on the painting and the artist's approach.
Wonderful exhibition of the Nabi painters of late-19C life in Paris on now, until Jan 26. Don't miss it!
The staff was patient, the collections are definitely worth seeing. Only wish they had clear rules on a sign somewhere to avoid confusion.
I loved it, high class "2nd class" paintings worth seeing!
Some excellent pieces, but much of their collection is not on display during renovation.
Went to a special event here and had a blast. The atmosphere was awesome and the art was incredible!
This museum was a nice surprise. The collection was much more than just contemporary. It has a variety of well known artists from the Old Masters to Rothko.
The regular collection is mostly modern art but is a bit eclectic. There are some gems, including a series of panels about the Great Migration (when many African-Americans migrated from the South to the industrial cities of the North). The special exhibit was spectacular when I went, though, and was worth the price of admission all on its own. If you can get there while the Zilia Sanchez exhibit is up I highly recommend doing so.
Fabulous private museum with excellent exhibits that change often. Permanent home to Renoir's "Luncheon of the Boating Party"
Great eclectic modern art collection. Permanent collection cycled frequently.
A wonderful place with thought provoking exhibits and a helpful staff who is happy to help explain or discuss exhibits. Worth the money to go.
It's good also for the non artistic folks. They have a tiny section with little cards where you can draw you own art with crayons and hang them for display. I thought that idea added an extra zing to my visit there. There are several brilliant pieces here but my favourite has to be of the one from Christian Dahl. This was a part of the new noweigian collection that opened up recently. Some of the museum's abstract collection was a bit beyond my understanding. But overall it was a good one time visit.
Lovely for a visit, very relaxing and the paintings are amazing to see.
Exceptional art collection. Three levels to visit with the permanent exhibition and the temporary exhibition
Very friendly information at the information desk and wifi in the restaurant
Amazing collection. It is well worth the entrance fee. They have amazing exhibits, and their special exhibits are usually very impressive. One of their most famous pieces is Renoir's "Luncheon of the Boating Party", but they have some amazing Picasso and Degas. All of the art is Post-Impressionism and modern.
If you live in DC, it is well worth the membership, which is reciprocated at many other museums in the States. The Philips after 5 event, is always a must. It's the first Thursday of the month. And they usually have drinks, food, and live music, as well as different little shows and different curators speaking. It's a great way to unwind after a day at work.
Very interesting museum thanks to the works presented and the configuration of the places which allows an intimate approach to art.
Excellent experience. Exhibits all have descriptions to provide context to the art. Works are well lit and arranged, the special exhibit was wonderful and informative of French art dynamics in the 1890s. Elevator and ramps to all floors for accessibility, and audio tours are available. Plan to spend an hour or two here.
A lot of great pieces from artists such as Mondrian, Lawerence, and others.
Loved the entire collection, but was especially moved by the displaced persons exhibit
A must see. Offers a needed break from the crowds. Beautiful permanent collection.
Great museum, good art. Cosy, nice comfortable seats with lots of catalogues
Beautiful works of art of all kinds. Be sure to check out the permanent collection, the architecture of the original house is just as awinspireing as the works of art it houses.
Excellent art gallery. Easy to find from metro. Easy to navigate within the gallery. Well displayed, spaced and lit. Timed tickets ensure it is not overcrowded. Renoir and Friends exhibit with focus on the Luncheon of the Boating Party was extremely well done. Colorful and educational.
One of the best galleries I've ever been to! Really well curated, has a wonderful permanent collection and fun exhibits. Could have spend two additional hours here, especially in the Rothko room. Gift shop has a great selection too!
Modern art certainly isn't for everyone so I'd only recommend this art museum if you appreciate contemporary other. If not, then you might want to check out some of the surrounding art museums which have a broader range of works. The permanent collection at the Phillips is free during the week but costs on the weekends. The special exhibit always costs a small entrance fee. Overall, not one of the best museums or even one of the best art collections in Washington DC.
Enjoyed the art, particularly The Migration Series. Gift shop is one of the best.
